What a great video with sincere commentary. I love hearing all of your thoughts as you’re paintinting. And I find I am able to use the techniques you demonstrate in different paintings. Hi to Tamsin 🙋♀️ and Arthur 🐈. Looking forward to trying what I watched you so and excited about part two. 💙🌵
I started out using the Arches 140lb. cold press, such as you used in this video. I found there was some inconsistencies in in the paper and often it buckled. Then I found a 20" x 30" sheet of Arches 300lb. cold press paper on the clearance rack at my local art store for $1! I love the fact that the heavier weight paper does not buckle no matter how much water is used. Now I only use the large sheets in the 300lb. weight. It is indulgent but since I paint mostly small (4 x 6", 5 x 7" or 8 x 10") I get many pieces from the sheet. I have an over-sized rotary cutter that I use to trim it to size. I order 5 sheets about every two months. I'm not at all sure why I am rambling on about my paper. 🙂 I love the tutorial. Thank you.
Thank you Diane for doing this comparison for me! First, I really hope I didn't use the word hate. It's just that I have been so frustrated with the Arches paper. I am beginning to think it has something to do with our arid weather. I live in Southern California and it does get pretty hot here in the summer. In fact today it is overcast and truly fall has arrived (finally) So now I will be anxious to see how the paper responds as there is actually moisture in the air today. Even in winter it is dry...we love the rain and really need it badly. I am so looking forward to tomorrows video to see your final thoughts. Today you have very much cheered me, made me laugh, giggle, and all the good parts of friendship. As you know my husband and I got to have a little getaway to beautiful Cambria. A much needed rest. Now I am looking forward to doing some painting tomorrow. See you tomorrow. xoxoxoxo

Oh wow! I would have driven past their shop thousands of times, what was it called? My son was born in the Tunbridge Wells Maternity Home, now a housing development next to Dunorlan Park, and my daughter was born in Pembury Hospital, where I also previously had worked on the maternity ward. It's a bit bigger now than then! Until the 90s we used to have 2 businesses in Borough Green, (which I'm sure you know of,) mine was called Bumpsadaisy and we sold maternity clothes, and my husband and inlaws had a hiking shop called Clobber! Happy days!
@@DianeAntoneStudio I was born in the Maternity Home too in 1968 (at least I assume it's the same one - Mum isn't around anymore to ask!) Oh Diane!!! Positively love your work, humor and giggle!!! I’ve learned sooooo much in the short time since I FOUND YOUR CHANNEL!!!! However, I’m confused. I read an article about you saying that you were divorced and you make comments about your husband on occasion…so I guess my question is do you or don’t you have a husband? I’m going to try the sticking out of the tongue method to my hubby!!! Wishing you were on this continent so we could be painting buddies!!! Keep on with the fabulous work and I’ll be tuned in!!! Hugs, Marge
Hi Marge, sorry for the confusion! I’ve had a bit of a mish-mash of a life which involved divorce and remarriage a couple of times. I’ve been married to my present and final husband for over 30 years now! So glad you enjoy the videos and the channel, and I’m so pleased that you are finding them entertaining and hopefully you’re having fun painting too! All the best, Diane xxx
Yes, I saw Karen Rice doing that, gave it a try, it's weird but effective! I think it would work particularly well on Arches which so readily gives up the paint! I'll think about doing a tutorial on it when I've got the hang of it myself !!
Hi, i don't usually read other comments before writing mine but since there was only one i glanced at the first line and it is similar to my thought. I love to hear your thoughts as you paint, i am the same way. Rambling on in my head and even outload-i ive alone so no one to comment! I also have many allergies specifically to wool, so when you were talking about your hat i laughed-that is one allergy i dont think i have (🤞) . I can't wait to see how this painting turns out ! See you tomorrow 👍
Hi Ann-Ingrid and thanks so much for your lovely comment. Aren't these allergies annoying? I don't tolerate wool next to my skin but can manage it on the outside or on my head. But I'm allergic to gluten, shellfish, avocados and tropical fruit, chestnuts, latex, mould, woodsmoke, synthetic perfume, alcohol, live yeast, certain detergents, many pollens, my goodness I hadn't listed all that before - it certainly limits my life choices!!! Hope you like the final painting - yellow is always difficult to paint with!
After my cancer surgery and recovery I've been itching to get back to normal so iv booked myself back into one of my old pop up art groups for a Christmas exhibition, they are quite exciting as they pop up in old derelict buildings etc so this time we are in a shop which used to be Ben and Jerry's so that should be fun, the funniest building we popped up in was a old fire station ,it started raining that's when we found out the roof leaked we spent most of the day moving tables to avoid wet art work
Sorry I pressed the wrong button ,I would just like to thank you for all the inspiration you have given me this year, now to put it into practice, take care ❤
Dear Diane, elves and gnomes - that must be the explanation for the otherwise astonishing phenomenon of the pigments having indeed moved overnight or even days - they do have a secret life, and the hardest thing is to be patient and wait for the (sometimes) nice surprises they can create.
@@DianeAntoneStudio Yes, time and again! That's why I use the hairdrier only on extremely impatient days - it interrupts the slow travelling of the pigments. And funnily - I ALWAYS find my lousy pictures a tiny bit better after I have left them alone for some time. It's really amazing! And something to look forward to!
Hi Debrah, thanks for your comment and question and welcome to the channel! You can find similar dishes here amzn.to/3juu2M6 and amazon also have plastic ones which are cheaper. There are various options on amazon, mine were made specially for me so I can't point you exactly at them. Hope that helps!
Hi Diane. I'm sorry, I didn't understand what you were saying about burnt umber and burnt sienna being earth colours and having to be careful using them. Would you please explain this so I can get it? Thank you for all you share on this and your garden channel. ox ❤🐏
Hi Leslie, I don’t think I said anything about needing to be careful. Burnt Umber and Burnt Sienna are both very safe colors with no health risks attached. They are very useful colors in every painter’s palette - for example, Burnt Sienna mixed with Ultramarine makes a lovely soft grey ideal for clouds. I’m glad you are enjoying the channel and if you have any other questions please just ask!
@@DianeAntoneStudio Hi Diane, thank you so much for you speedy reply. This particular moment of conversation began at roughly 13:18 in the video and is referring to, I believe, the transparency verses the opacity of the two colours when using them in floral painting. Yes, I am familiar with using Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna together for those soft grays to blue/grays to chocolate browns so dark they're nearly black. 🎨🧓
So, I'm watching this video and giggling a bit about the things you're saying about elves changing everything overnight and my husband says, "She sounds a lot like you." I never connected what happens overnight when I leave a painting that I feel isn't working to the elves, but I think you're onto something there... My paintings almost always look different, usually in a good way, the next morning! Looking forward to part 2!
I’m no fan of Arches. It buckles like mad and smells odd as well. I may have a bad batch, but I switched to Fabriano and couldn’t be happier. Carson Heritage is also fantastic. Love your videos!
I agree. The paper is not the same as the paper I used to buy years ago, and I think it has been downgraded in some way. I love Fabriano Artistico and 5 but I haven't tried Canson Heritage. Thanks for the tip, I'll try it out.
I learned several years ago that the sizing in the paper begins to deteriorate after time. I had explored this because I’d had to stop painting for a time and when I was able to begin again the paint would not move on the Arches paper. It didn’t matter if I used less water or more water. It didn’t matter if I did wet on dry and then used paint while the paint was wet. It didn’t matter if I used water to try and move the paint! To say the least it was very frustrating. Then my daughter bought me a new pad of Arches and lo and behold the paint moved again! Have you ever heard of the sizing wearing out?❤
Yes, I have a lot of old Arches paper that I was given when it was already old and some of it is unusable because the sizing has lost its effectiveness. I’ve also found this happening with Saunders Waterford paper. It’s a good reason to not horde paper and especially not the expensive stuff!!!
😊roads in UK are really bad at repairing roads, and pavements! Heaven knows what it spends on road tax and car park charges? Since having to be pushed around in a wheel chair, I’ve almost been jolted out of it twice by the state of the pavements! Sometimes holding my breathe in anticipation especially when my teenager grandson takes me for a meander and when it does come to repairing a road, they close them down for months, sometimes even a few years! It’s astonishing how the government gets away with it!
You have a lovely laugh. Your husband doesn’t know what he’s talking about. It just shocks him as he’s not used to it. We don’t always buy things as they seem high. Expensive to us. But most creativity is in our heads and comes out differently. My sister has two homes and decorates beautifully. But won’t pick up a paint brush to save her. I spend money on those paint brushes. She buys houses. FYI.
It’s when the paint runs into patterns that you haven’t planned because you’ve used a lot of water on the paper. It can cause some interesting effects.
WOW! My family came from that part of London too. I was born in Lewisham Hospital, and at that time we lived in Mottingham, but later we moved (for my health) to "the country" - namely Swanley. Not far from Tunbridge Wells where I spend most of my formative years!

I'll kiss Arthur if he'll let me! Thanks for the lovely support Paula, much appreciated, and these husbands are sent to try us - and try us they do!
Love this! Cannot wait for part 2. Lol. That’s one of my biggest problems…. Waiting!!!
Me too!
Your lovely laugh puts me at ease. Angry complaining people make everyone uptight. So if not flowers, what is your favorite thing to paint? Thanks for the video!
Good question! I think I don't really have a favourite, I just like painting!
I honestly love your videos! The way you explain things it makes sense ☺️
Thanks so much Veertje, it's very affirming to me to hear you say this xxx
Oh Diane!!!
Beautiful! I've recently tried the Bokeh look in watercolor. Lots of blotting circles for an amazing background. And very easy.
Thanks so much Anni and wishing you the best of health in the future xxx
Just ask your husband to join in your laughter! Never stop laughing, the world needs laughter. Maybe he needs a grumpy old man cave!!!
Perhaps your hubby needs to lighten up. Your laugh is lovely!! I love your videos.
Yes! Thank you! I think so too!
Beautiful!!
Thank you! 😊
Dear Diane, elves and gnomes - that must be the explanation for the otherwise astonishing phenomenon of the pigments having indeed moved overnight or even days - they do have a secret life, and the hardest thing is to be patient and wait for the (sometimes) nice surprises they can create.
It's true isn't it!! Have you noticed it often too???
@@DianeAntoneStudio Yes, time and again! That's why I use the hairdrier only on extremely impatient days - it interrupts the slow travelling of the pigments. And funnily - I ALWAYS find my lousy pictures a tiny bit better after I have left them alone for some time. It's really amazing! And something to look forward to!
I'm excited for part 2! Can you tell where you purchased the small ceramic dishes for paint?
Hi Debrah, thanks for your comment and question and welcome to the channel! You can find similar dishes here amzn.to/3juu2M6 and amazon also have plastic ones which are cheaper. There are various options on amazon, mine were made specially for me so I can't point you exactly at them. Hope that helps!
Mottingham ! Wow ! We lived on Coldharbour Estate
I have always, for some reason, remembered the address I lived at when I was a toddler - it was 8 Mirror Path, not far from the Coldharbour Estate.
Arches is the paper I use mostly - I think it’s excellent.
Yes, it really is!
Yes! Tamsin says, it must be good fairies because they rarely make the painting look WORSE - only BETTER - by morning! Isn't that strange!
Thank you! I want to try, but, how do I find part 2.

@ thank you! So good to know it wasn’t just me! I do find myself hoarding my paper and then I remind myself that it will become unusable any way! 🥰
Aww, make your husband laugh then he can’t get mad at you. 🤗
FYI.
What is a cauliflower background?
It’s when the paint runs into patterns that you haven’t planned because you’ve used a lot of water on the paper. It can cause some interesting effects.
I was born in Tonbridgewells….because there wasn’t room in Woolwich with all the after war babies !
WOW! My family came from that part of London too. I was born in Lewisham Hospital, and at that time we lived in Mottingham, but later we moved (for my health) to "the country" - namely Swanley. Not far from Tunbridge Wells where I spend most of my formative years!
Wow ! This is amazing 😊
What Renee said, lol. Seriously I do love watching you paint, and listening to you laugh, you have a wonderful voice. I did the pumpkin painting awhile back, not to bad, then my dearest friend wanted one, and she absolutely loved it, so thank you so very much for teaching us. I live in Newfoundland Canada 🇨🇦🌹
Hi Judy - I live on the other coast - BC, Canada, We are a great creative group, aren't we!
Thanks so much Judy, I really appreciate your feedback, so supportive. Wonderful that your friend loved your pumpkin! I'm so happy to be reaching you, out there in Newfie Land!!!!! My best friend in Calgary (from Ontario originally) was married to a Newfie... happy painting!
@@DianeAntoneStudio Thank you.🌹
@@deannamunro8148 Yes we are, loving the water colours, I find the flowers the hardest though". Stay safe and God bless.🇨🇦🌹
NOT ALLOWED TO LAUGH!!!!!?????? WHA!!!!?????
I know, ridiculous, isn't it! I've learnt to live with it but it does get me down sometimes!
@@DianeAntoneStudio I'm sending you a joke book!
How dare your husband shut down your laugh! 😠I say laugh if you want to, he can get over it.😏
