Guide to the Seridó Geopark in Cerro Corá:

The dream of a geopark in Seridó began in the early 2010s, when Marcos Nascimento and Rogério Ferreira presented
field diagnosis with an initial proposal for the delimitation of a geopark in the area. Numerous natural processes, over the last 2 billion years, especially in the last 640 million years, were responsible for shaping the landscapes of the region, marked by mountains, peaks and depressions, in addition to the rocky exposures of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. In the region there are also important records of ancient peoples, who left their mark on the rocks of Seridó through paintings and engravings, showing that the relationship of local peoples with nature dates back thousands of years. The territory of the Seridó Geopark is located in the northeastern semi-arid region, central-south region of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, totally encompassing the territories of the municipalities of Acari, Carnaúba dos Dantas, Cerro Corá, Currais Novos, Lagoa Nova and Parelhas. These municipalities are part of the Central Potiguar mesoregion and encompass parts of the Serra de Santana and Seridó Oriental microregions.
The vegetation of the area is characterized by the dominance of caatinga, due to an extremely rigorous climate, low rainfall and irregular distribution. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization-UNESCO recognized, on the morning of April 13, 2022, the Seridó Geopark as a territory of international geological relevance. From this date, this territory, rich in the geological, biological, cultural and historical aspects of the people of Serido, officially becomes part of UNESCO's International Program of Geosciences and Geoparks. The positive result places the Seridó Geopark on UNESCO's select list of World Geoparks, which now has 177 geoparks in 46 countries around the world, in addition to including it in the World Geoparks Network.
Serra Preta:
Serra Preta Geosite of singular beauty where we can highlight the different rock formations existing in the region, such as the Stone Stone House of Gameleira, Stone House of Winds, Stone of Zorro and Tank of Beasts With the imminent threat of a storm, it was prudent to suspend the tour at Geosítio Serra Preta.
Volcanic Valley:
The entrance to this geosite is located about 15 km southwest of the city of Cerro Corá, and by unpaved roads. The path has signposted parts that lead to the geosite. And that lead to a tourist trail, with approximately 02 km in length, which gives access to the bed of the Riacho da Pedreira, where volcanic rocks are found. These basalts are 27 million years old, little older than the basalts of Pico do Cabugi (25 million years). From the trail, the relief of the region can be observed, denoted by the erosive escarpment of Serra de Santana. At some points along the trail there are viewpoints for observing the landscape on the edge of Serra de Santana. The basaltic flow at the site is related to the Macau Volcanism, dated at 25 million years, whose greatest expression on the surface is Pico do Cabugi, a remaining volcanic neck, considered one of the symbols of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, which is located about 42 km in a straight line from the geosite, outside the limits of the Seridó Geopark.
Source of the Potengi River:
Located on the slopes of Serra de Santana, this geosite can be considered one of the main attractions of the city of Cerro Corá, which identifies the existence of the spring through a portico at the entrance to the municipality. The Potengi River is one of the main tributaries of Rio Grande do Norte, running for 176 km from the Seridó until it flows into the Atlantic Ocean, in the capital Natal. Discovered by the colonists, its name became known as "Rio Grande", for its vast bed and extension. After a few years, it was called Rio Potengi, which in the language of the Tupi Indians who lived here, means river of shrimp. In the geosite area, five springs are identified: one main and four secondary, accessed through a small trail. The region close to the source is comprised of a hydrographic microbasin and is susceptible to legal protection as a Permanent Protection Area.
