His original line was "Between the world and my love, I will let go of neither." he was never successful, so he kept repeating and trying to change things. In this last life, something that didn't happen before happened: she gave birth to his son. She whispered to him their son's name and while he was stunned, she self-destructed and that explosion of energy killed him too. In the last moments, from his expression, it seems like he was happy just to be with her forever.

He tried to possess a love that was freely given to him, and she felt her love was not appreciated enough. He found out to late how much she really loved him, she gave up everything, but he gave up nothing.
Well, he tried to posses it first, otherwise it wouldn't have happened at all. And it was given freely because he lied about everything he was. If he hadn't done that, she'd have never fallen for him. Also, she didn't give up anything except her life, which was the least she cared about. She cared about the survival and freedom of the universe, and about him; he cared about possessing the universe, and about her. They both cared about the latter less.
