Master Higgins' second adventure is such a vast improvement over the original that it doesn't even feel like it's part of the same generation. Fantastic game!
@@ChristineMason87 I rented this in October of 1990. It was a fun little Weekend Romp. One of my BBF's also had a copy on NES as well during the early 90s.
As a child, me and my brother would rent this game a few times. It was a huge step up from the first game. We loved the dinosaurs that we could ride. It was a difficult game, but we kept going back to. I bought this when the 3DS Virtual Console was around and was disappointed it never came to the Wii U VC.
Yup, 2 and 3 are both great, some of my favourite platformers on the system. Too bad we didn't get 4, but I get it - it was just too late at that point. Still, what we did get is really awesome.
Gotta love when you get to the very last level and the game goes from "Adventure Island 2" to "Contra with tomahawks". Also, funny thing that isn't made clear AT ALL through the game. The Choose An Egg room isn't just for a little bonus. Which egg you pick determines which stage you go to next. The game actually has 80 levels, and you could potentially get to all of them with the right (or wrong) combination of egg picks.
I haven't seen this game since I was eight. I remember renting it, and never getting further than Cave Island's boss before I had to return it. Nice to see the game fully played through, and skillfully too.
I wanna know why the SNES games and even that WiiWare game ignored the dinosaur buddies. They were the best part of the game! I guess it’s because 2, 3, and 4 were made by a different developer than the others, but it feels like these should have set a standard for the franchise.

Thanks! I had it too as a kid, but the real version lol. My parents got it for me at Montgomery Ward on the way to a baseball game in Charleston, SC one random summer evening back in 1991. That's an oddly clear memory for how long ago it was :) I've always loved it!

@@NintendoComplete Adventure Island II was released on October 16,1990, literally the SAME Day Super Famicom launched in Japan. I should know, I rented it The Weekend before Halloween.
Always loved this one, could only beat it as an adult. It just drags for a tad too long with all the paths and the bosses moving away. Quite the marathon but a fun one. Nice playthrough.
@@NintendoComplete Yes I do, but I've never mapped the paths to the different stages except for the last island so I'm never consistent with them, I usually take 2 or 3 warps per playthrough.

There's a boxed copy of this game that's been sitting on the shelf of my local retro game store for like five years now. It's just under seventy bucks. Should I nab it?
@@NintendoComplete I agree with you that it looked amazing and the music was great. I actually owned the game when it came out and I remember thinking the game was soulless, like a shell of a game. If Super Bomberman was done so amazingly well, why was Super Adventure Island so empty; just a nice veneer with no depth? That game was one of the only SNES games I ever bought that I was disappointed by (the other one was Mortal Kombat).
@@NintendoComplete I rented Darius Twin in March 1992, Super Smash TV in April(I returned it to Blockbuster the very next day) Super Adventure Island in May of 1992. I wasn't impressed. Rented Super Double Dragon in June. Was even more let down. People seem to forget that there were certain SNES titles that caused Loyal Nintendo consumers to try SEGA and many ended up buying Genesis in 1993-1994. I was SO let down by Super Mario World in late 1991, and constantly dealing with really mediocre rentals throughout '92, that I wanted a Genesis. I got one when MK1 one came out. Still had SNES though.

Oh yeah, if you can finish the first one, this one is like a walk in the park. I didn't mind, though. It took me a long time to finish AI1. I was happy that this was an easier game.

The third game is a bit less daunting in that sense, but it gets pretty tough once you hit World 5.
