The first game of the long-running Adventure Island series is a conversion of Wonder Boy, an arcade game published by Sega in 1986. Hudson sought the rights to develop a port from the original arcade developer, Escape. Escape, however, only held the rights to the game itself, with Sega retaining sole legal ownership of the featured characters. Sega went on to publish Wonder Boy completely intact on its own home systems and subsequently granted Activision the rights to publish home computer conversions, while Hudson, after changing the title, the music, and replacing the main character sprite, released their reskinned version on the NES as Hudson’s Adventure Island.
Adventure Island stars Master Higgins, a tubby little orange dude based on the company's 80s front man, Takahashi Toshiyuki, who was famous in Japan for his starring role in a Toho film that featured Hudson’s Star Force, for singing in the band Runner, and for being able to hit a controller button sixteen times per second. Capitalizing on his fame, Hudson redesigned Wonder Boy‘s main character as Takahashi Meijin (lit. Master Takahashi, renamed to Master Higgins for the west), a caricature of Takahashi.
Tina, or Princess Leilani (as she is called by the box copy and the manual), has been kidnapped and taken to Adventure Island by an evil witch doctor, and Master Higgins must save her by hopping and bopping across thirty-two stages of tropically themed platforming action.
The game's primary innovation is its timer. The row of constantly depleting hash marks at the top of the screen represents Higgin's "vitality" which must be replenished by grabbing pieces of fruit and hidden milk bottles.
To even the odds a bit against the island's wildlife, Higgins can break open eggs to find weapons (stone axes and flaming bolas), skateboards (a speedy wonder of stone age technology and a deathtrap), keys (for bonus stages), and fairies (for temporary invincibility), but he has to be careful about which eggs he opens. Some hide an evil eggplant that will quickly sap the vitality gauge.
Things are relatively easy-going in the early levels, but make no mistake: Adventure Island is a prime example of a game that is "Nintendo hard." There are several massive difficulty spikes in its latter half as stages turn into trap-filled gauntlets and fruit becomes increasingly scarce. It requires a ton of practice and memorization to make it to the end, but it's pretty satisfying to see the effort pay off when you finally manage to decapitate the last boss and save the girl.
Adventure Island is punishingly old-school, but anyone that loves the purity of 80s platformers will enjoy gnashing their teeth at this NES classic.

This was one of the first NES games I rented in the 80’s. People must have thought they were up for a breezy, cute, and fun tropical adventure, but then the game crushes the coconuts that are your hopes and dreams. I had played Wonder Boy before this game, so I was used to receiving a tropical beat down. I love all of the Wonder Boy games, especially the Master System “trilogy”.
Seriously, I think it's one of the more difficult NES games out there. I liked the Wonder Boy games too, but I never liked them as much as the AI games.
@@NintendoComplete I hear you - I remember you saying you liked AI 2 the most (awesome game). I just like the exploration aspects of the Wonder Boy II and III games and Super Adventure Island II. They’re all awesome and you’ve mastered them!
@@rjcupid Wonder Boy III is my favourite 80s 'Metroidvania', as such games would be called these days (though it's a rather simple one, of course). Seriously, one of the absolute best Master System games by far in my opinion. There were some other good platformers like Master of Darkness or Ninja Gaiden, but this one holds a special place for me.

@@rjcupid Yup, I like it as well. These games clearly took some clues from Adventure Island 3 and 4, but did their own thing. To be honest, there aren't many games that feel exactly like this... maybe to 'some extent' Joe & Mac and Prehistorik, but that's still not quite the same feel.
This one's really Nintendo hard. I've always liked 2 and 3 the most, but these days I also enjoy 4 quite a lot, since it's a 'Metroidvania' (and the last Famicom game in Japan). Fun series, all things considered.
I find it rather painful watching Master Higgens strut barefoot across those ice levels. Anyone trying to beat this game in the middle of winter outside in a truck would understand.

The soundtrack is good. I especially like the tune for the caves and the piece associated with Honey Girl (invincibility) and the bonus areas.

It really would have been nice to a compilation set of the Adventure Island and Bonk games to get other people interested in them again.

I have never experienced enemy placement as evil as these Adventure Island games. AI Part 2 is mean but the first chapter takes the cake.
I beat this game one time years ago. It is every bit the brutal game it is. I wish they would have kept the items you collect for the Princess you have to save, as well as indicate which eggs to avoid by having them dotted. And make it a requirement to collect all Pots/Dolls. Those were in the original Wonder Boy arcade game.
Color palette is a bit weird when compared to arcade, but still a great port.

This is one of those games, where if you lose a life while having the Powerups, you’re doomed. Same with Castlevania. I don’t know how you survived that losing a few lives.
I played countless times as a kid. Without save states on my WiiU, I could never have beaten it

but i'm disappointed to see that most of the stages & the lone boss are just a repeat of previous stages :(
i wish they could have made the stages & bosses different like other games released during this time, such as gradius, twinbee, etc.
but it was good to finally see the ending for this game :)

IMO, Adventure Island series is much better than Wonder Boy's sequence games.
I have to strongly disagree. Wonder Boy in Monsterland (Wonder 2) is my favorite 8-bit game and many consider Wonder Boy 3 the best game on the SMS similar to people's opinion of Super Mario 3 on the NES. I would agree the Adventure Island sequels on NES are more faithful to the original Wonderboy but the Wonderboy series on the Master System was great and should of been the face of Sega instead of the overrated Alex Kidd series.

Everyone said this game was hard. I found it not too bad. SNES version is super freaking easy. Loved playing this at my Aunt's house all the time. Better then losing at City Connection.

I have more of a nostalgic connection to this game, but find myself picking up Wonder Boy on the Master System; I don't know why, something about it is just much more enjoyable than this game
