QUICK SPECS: 1/25 Scale. 68 parts. 7.5 inches long once assembled. Parts molded in white with clear plastic, clear red, chrome parts, two metal axles and four black vinyl tires. Skill level 2 - Suggested for modelers age 14+. PAINT AND GLUE REQUIRED.
Shrewsberry's 1970 L.A. Dart was the subject of a 1/25-scale plastic model kit first produced by Model Products Corporation and since reissued by Model King using the original tooling. That same car, updated for the 1971 season with a 1971 front grille is still owned by Shrewsberry and is undergoing restoration at his son's home in Ridgecrest. Model kits of the Hemi Under Glass and Hurst Hairy Olds were available as well; the Plymouth was replicated by MPC and Aurora Plastics Corporation while the Olds was available as a kit from Monogram. In the late 1990s, a 1/64-scale diecast model of the L.A. Dart was issued by Johnny Lightning. Presently, die-cast model manufacturer Highway 61 produces a 1/18-scale replica of Shrewsberry's Super Duty Tempest (which Highway 61 designers used as the actual basis for the model) as well as the 1966 Hemi Under Glass and 1966 Hurst Hairy Olds.[5]
In 1979, Shrewsberry exhibited a fiberglass 1930 Ford Model A delivery truck sponsored by Knott's Berry Farm. Dubbed The Berry Wagon and painted by custom car builder Ed Roth, the hemi-powered wheelstander was capable of more than 120 miles per hour (190 km/h) in the quarter-mile, again on its rear bumper.
Billy Lewis "Wild Bill" Shrewsberry (born June 26, 1938) is an American exhibition drag racing driver primarily active throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Originally from Mansfield, Ohio, Shrewsberry moved to Southern California in October 1962. Shrewsberry is best known as the driver of the drag racing replica of the Barris-built Batmobile from the 1966 television series[1][2] and of the "L.A. Dart," a series of wheelstanding funny cars each with a rear-mounted, supercharged Chrysler Hemi engine and each sponsored by the Dodge and Plymouth dealers of Los Angeles and Orange Counties. The result of the rearward weight transfer caused by the engine's mounting position was a "wheelie" for the entire quarter-mile at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour (160 km/h). Steering was accomplished by a combination of the service brake pedal activating the brake on the left wheel while a brake lever from a racing go-kart activated the right brake. So proficient was Shrewsberry at this sort of driving that he would often spin his car to face the opposite direction at the end of the track and race back to the starting line, all the while maintaining the wheelstand.
Shrewsberry also helped develop and pilot the Hurst Hemi Under Glass Plymouth Barracuda later driven by Bob Riggle as well as the 1969 Car Craft Magazine giveaway Dodge Dart Swinger painted by the legendary George Barris. He also participated in the development of the Dodge Little Red Wagon driven by Bill "Maverick" Golden and the Hurst Hairy Olds Oldsmobile 4-4-2 exhibition dragsters each sponsored by Hurst Performance. Like the "L.A. Dart", the Little Red Wagon and Hemi Under Glass were wheelstanders while the Hurst Hairy Olds had engines both front and rear, each powering an automatic transaxle from an Oldsmobile Toronado.

I must say, these guys were very creative with their drag cars in that era! The paint job really came out great and the chassis assembly looks good enough to display on its own.

They need to make a slap one's self in the head emoji cause that's what I need here to say that I had bought this kit used, unopened from Model Roundup for around 80 or 100 bucks. Then about a year later they rerelease it for what about 30, 35 bucks?
      Hate when that happens. ✌️Tim!

The extra effort invested in the striped paint job was well worth it! That giant Hemi is the traction attraction, all right. Detailing really pays off in the finished model. Thanks for the fine work AND the video! I can't imagine working through a viewfinder - that's talent.

I pray that Round 2/MPC runs with this and makes a stock 70 Dart Swinger with the Craiger SS wheels.
I'd love to build a kit of my first car. Orange 70 Dart with a 318.
I still love this kit though and will definitely build this one.

Great review! Wild Bill is an old and dear friend who gave me the Model King reissue with those amazing decals. It’s still unbuilt, at least for now. He’s as nice a person as you’d ever want to meet and a legit motor sports legend…and oh what stories!

I use white blank waterslide decal paper to make masks and/or hard edges. I cut it to the shape I want and it covers really well. Sometimes it takes two layers if your paper is thin but it dries very flat and fits into model seams and contours awesomely. They make thick white waterslide paper too that is quite a bit more opaque. A couple coats of clear and you never even see them.

This kit's been reissued a couple times since the original back in the early seventies, At one point they made a Street Freak version and they put headlights in instead of the flat plates and rivets that were where the headlights would have been, Luckily I still have my original grille and a backup grille when I redo a second version, The floor pan and roll cage and interior can also be used to build the 1967 to 1969 Hurst Hemi Under Glass Barracuda's if you have those body shells, If course the 69 Barracuda is available and decals are available also, The only difference is the roll bar gets moved up a little bit the interior gets moved up toward the windshield area a little bit and the Hemi doesn't sit in the trunk it sits closer to the back of the Interior Tub, And you have to find a set of headers to go under the car and tie everything together to the rear axle which you can still use the same setup just move it around with the two drive shafts and the transfer case, You could always rob a set of Hurst Wheels out of the AMT 66 Hurst Hemi Under Glass Barracuda kit, And also all the Hemi Under Glass Barracuda's have Fuel Injectors Stacks, Not a Blower even the 66 car had Fuel Injector Stacks and the model company still didn't fix this, I actually built the 65 through 69 Hurst Hemi Under Glass Barracuda's and I'm working on a 1968 version of the L.A. Dart using a 1968 Revell body shell with basically the same paint scheme and I made it into a two-door sedan from a hardtop, And using the same chassis from the model shown that the HPI Guys using now, Great Work Chris !!!!

When I saw this on my sub list I couldn't wait to see it but life continues to get in the way.
Thank you for doing this build! Now I can see what to expect to run into when I build mine.
My little brother got this kit around '71/'72 before he developed his skills. He didn't do the stripes he painted the body orange 😆. Never did finish it but over the years while thinking of the kits we used to have I always thought, 🤔 if I get the chance I'm gonna grab one. Yours looks great. And since I didn't get to see this until Saturday now I can go to the '49 Ford Coupe.
    It's a HPI Double Header.

I'm always interested in finding kits I can make into a slotcar. The AMT and MPC kits are great for this because the body is usually one piece and very stable in case of crashes. This looks like another great candidate and would be an eyecatcher on the track. Due to the large cutouts for the wheels I can set the body very low on the chassis, which is an advantage. I only need the body, glass and decals. Thanks again for showing this. Excellent build, as usual btw. I like your fairly simple approach with great results.

I assembled many Drag Racer 1/25 and 1/24 scale models ( Funny Cars and a few Top Fuelers) in the late 60's/early 70's, mostly AMT and although MPC offered popular subjects, I always considered them the worst in terms of realism of engine and chassis components but the bodies and decals were not too bad.
