As an Aro person. I always desired a friendship like in barbie. Yk? Being dedicated to one another without romance shit. Living together, laughing together, loving together..but in a platonic way. My Aro ass is jealous

    • @ps1hagrid786
      @ps1hagrid786 ปีที่แล้ว +288

I blame Barbie in the Diamond castle as my source of intense desire for a platonic life partner. As a child I used to hate my best friend's boyfriends. I could never really place why until I reached high school and learned of my aro ace identity. Í didn't want her to leave me alone while she just became just like everyone else in the oversaturated world of romance. I thought I was her soul mate, while in reality I was just a friend. Important enough to keep around but not important enough to share a life together. I even mischaracterized this as romantic interest at some point since we are meant to believe that deep love is only meant for romance. Platonic relationships sadly don't receive the recognition it deserves, while romantic and sexual relationships are put on a pedestal.

Mariposa and the fairy princess is basically a gay romance. We already knew Mariposa had a thing for the ever toxic Henna, but now she has a healthy relationship with Princess Catania

    • @felicity1877
      @felicity1877 2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

*Disclaimer, because of the replies on my comment, I edited it; so just to be clear, this comment is not meant to be offensive. It's just a personal reaction.*
I do not see it as logical consequence that Mariposa and Catania "basically a gay romance", or that she has "a thing for" Henna. Yes, it is a healthy relationsip, and it can be interpreted perhaps as romance. But I see it as mere friendship, and I really love also Mariposa and Carlos together, especially because she is dancing with Carlos in the ending.
You may interpret it, as you like...but just to mention:
      (Satirical comment starts..)
"Girl smiles at a girl and they befriend --> gay!
Girl yells at a girl and they fight --> gay!
Is there any chance not being gay nowadays?"
      (Snarky comment ending)
What I mean is that we also should not feel to save in any conclusions. That's the same also with straight romances. I'm not an active shipper, but I feel like that either way, whether gay or straight, real or fictive characters should not pushed into a relationship as "fact"., What is done as fan shipping, is another question; and I understand that there is chemistry as argument. But I just feel that there is a difference how we can jump to conclusions. Alexa and Liana in the Diamond Castle are more likely to be seen as representation than Erika and Anneliese, for example.

@@felicity1877 You may interpret it, as you like...but just to mention....
Girl & guy look at each other for more than 2 seconds --> in love!
Guy pesters girl even after she has told him repeatedly she is not interested--> in love!
Is there any chance not being straight nowadays?
      --
Please look at it from both perspectives. And I would even argue that straight people are usually much 'worse' in this aspect. A lot of writers are just lazy when it comes to straight romance so the romance between the characters end up unfulfilling or just plain bad because the characters have 0 chemistry. They're just a boy and a girl who happen to be in the same room, and BOOM they're in love. Also the weird male fantasy of the unfunny, painfully plain 'average dude' getting together with the most interesting and most attractive woman ever by constantly pressuring her into being in a relationship. Also the "he just bullies you because he likes you and boys cant control their feelings" :/ .
This is really sad because not only does it portray a really weird and unhealthy ideal of romance, but also because straight people don't really get any good relationships in media. The only one that I can come up with, on the top of my head, that was really cute is the relationship between Rayla and Callum from The Dragon Prince. But usually its just badly written or plain abusive.
And besides, it is fairly undeniable that these movies discussed here have a very queer feeling to them. If you just change Alexa in The Diamond Castle to a guy there would be obvious romantic implications of two people living together, being romantically uninterested in other people, saying they want to stay with each other forever, and then rejecting a life of luxury to go back to their humble home together.
Even if they never kissed or explicitly said anything about their relationship, you would automatically assume they were a couple just from the fact that they are a boy and a girl doing these things together. So why are people bending over backwards to proclaim that sapphic relationships or sapphic undertones are just 💞besties™💞?

I've said it once and i'll say it again: barbie and the princess school (or whatever it's called) is the gayest one by far. The plot is amazing, it depicts a forbidden romance between a young girl who comes from a unwealthy background and a brainwashed royal. The "poor" girl is projected into this noble milieu and isn't accepted because of her background but still fights and works for her cause and what she belives is right. The brainwashed royal will slowly detach from the ideas her mother planted in her, works her internalized homophobia out and helps her forbidden lover through her quest to take down the crown. Oh and it takes place in an all Girls school where everyone is basically a different flavor of gay.

Iirc, snobby royal girl's mom (villain mom) is the wife of the dead king's brother. Which is why villain mom can't be queen, she's not blood related to royalty, but her daughter is. So villain mom arranged to get the king, queen, and princess killed and make snobby royal girl queen and that way villain mom got to stay in power.

I wonder if this messaging was part of why I didn't realize I was queer until I was 12/13, despite clearly being attracted to girls in my earliest memories as a child - because these films teach the viewer that this kind of relationship is only platonic, and will always be only platonic. "Best friends now, tomorrow, always". and so on. The princess from Swan Lake was my first crush and I obsessed over her! But I was told that was friendship. I wonder if other queer people feel similarly, or if there's any research into it. This video was so well done and absolutely made me think!

While close female relationships always have been portrayed as platonic, i feel like it’s the opposite with close male relationships. Women can literally kiss each other and still be seen as platonic while men can barely be vulnerable with each other without the fear of looking "gay". In the same way men and women that are just friends always has an assumed romantic connection..

I had my first crush at 14, at some stranger girl I had never met but I could not stop looking at her and I remember thinking I wanted to make art of her. Then I proceeded to contemplate approaching her but got upset when I saw her walking with a boy and gave up. Something I always appreciated about princess and the pauper as a kid was that Erika, a commoner, initially turns down a marriage proposal from a king because her dream wasn't marriage, her dream was to travel the world singing for audiences. She only marries the king after she gets that chance to fulfill her actual original dream. A lot of stories about girls will often have the character abandon their initial goal when they experience romance while Erika's love interest chooses to wait for her while she accomplishes her goals she had before he came into the picture.

same! barbie movies as an ace kid were very ideal for me because the romance was very subtle(the hetero romance lol). I much prefered the exploration of female friendship and adventure. In disney movies it is the total opposite. The end goal is typically the marriage plot. I did love disney movies but I'd always fast forward through love songs and kiss scenes haha. I am glad disney is starting to realize that "hey maybe that is harmful to push on kids" so now we're getting more charcter driven stories. they're not perfect and neither is barbie of course but I think it is interesting and important to explore.

They've stopped showing it as a false-progressive whistleblow to feminists. It's there way of pointing to characters and saying "Look! This strong, female character doesn't need a man in her story! Are we doing it right?!"
I wish I could word it without sounding like a GOP Conservative but that's the best way I can describe it. They do nothing to actually be progressive, it's performative feminism that is deeply steeped in homophobia, anti/apathetic-LGBTQ sentiment. Please do not believe that Disney cares about "the children" in the slightest. They pander to progressive groups in a way that let's them keep the money from conservative (racists/homophobes) customers.

@@grandempressvicky6387 I'm certainly not under the impression that Disney is an any way a progressive company. However, I also do not want to ignore the many progressive animators, directors, staff members, and lower level employees who fight daily for representation at Disney. For a long time they have been fighting back and they have spoken up about this many times. So while the company/corporation as a whole is certainly not something I will ever praise I want to give credit to the individuals who do care because they are fighting for what matters.
As with all political situations there is nuance. This is of course a comment section so I cannot perfectly articulate all my opinions but I just want to recognize the value in these people's work even if I strongly disagree with company they work for. I don't think they alone can fix these issues but to ignore it feels wrong. Fundamentally Disney needs to change from the inside. I hope we all continue to support those who are working to do that. As it is such a huge company that unfortunately impacts many aspects of the global economy it is rather significant. This is the realities of our capitalist hell.
I hope I communicated what I wanted to say clearly. I don't want to argue. I think this is a nuanced argument with multiple sides. I do understand why anyone would disagree.

I had to be honest. I watch many of the Barbie movies because I loved the touch of fancy dresses and castles. But something that I really felt attracted to was the cute guys. For a gay boy who grow up in a cult, those movies were the closest I could imagine myself living in an alternative world. I wished many times that I could have my own Prince 🤴. Barbie movies still one of my favorites.

I'm not so sure about that characterization. When I first heard Lilli described that way, I did some Googling to see what that meant. What I learned was that she was based on a comic strip character who was sort of a blonde bimbo gold-digger, but also had high standards in men and spent a lot of time telling them off. The doll was originally sold as a gag gift for men, but was then marketed as a present for men to give their girlfriends and was also played with by children. I think the "sex doll" idea was popularized by author Ariel Levy.

I only recently realized that as a child, many of my Barbies were in lesbian relationships because I had many women and only two Kens. It was completely logical and natural for me to create pairs of women, although only a few months ago I thought about the fact that not every girl did that. I have good parents who gave me a sex education very early, so all my life I wondered how my classmates could be ashamed to see kisses in the movies, when I spend a lot of time arranging hot nights for Barbie and Ken.
I always joked about being bisexual, but after breaking away from a long-term abusive relationship when it was time to move on, I tried to imagine the person I wanted to have around me, and finally took it seriously that this person could be a woman. I am very glad that I stopped joking, although my parents never embarrassed me for such jokes, I still felt some pressure from the world that I should not be like that. As soon as I told my parents that I was bisexual seriously, I was supported, and my mother only advised me to change the Tinder settings so as not to miss my chance among women.
As for Barbie movies ... I thought that when I grow up I realize that they are stupid and "for children", but it turned out the opposite, each review gives me something new, and I want to show these movies to my children, if I have them. Unlike Disney cartoons, which were boxed stories, stories about a princess who wants more, and a prince whose names are not even mentioned in half of the movies, Barbie cartoons did not fit in the box. Through them, I fell in love with ballet, got visual orgasms from brilliant transformations, and learned wonderful songs, but I also got a bunch of protagonists who save themselves and the world, stories in which love is not at the center of the plot, evidence that being a woman is difficult, but we should fight for justice, and the representation of many kinds of relationships, from love and friendship, to relationships between brothers, sisters, parents and children, and more. It's more than Disney with a standard love, a standard antagonist who interferes with love, and a standard kiss that can fix everything.
Sorry for rambling so long, it was just a very emotional video for me💖💞

I´d quickly like to say that as a german person , bild lilly was not a sex doll. She was a character in comic strips for the bild magazines ,her not having anything to do with sex whatsoever. The comic pictured her as an independet office women ,who despite wanting to get married to a rich man and choosing her lovers based on how expensive their gifts to her are ,but no matter how much of a slacker she was ,she remaind in controll of her live and confident in herself. the doll that was sold was intended to be a funny joke for freshly engaged couples ,but became so popular with little girls that she was more bought for children than a "haha you´re such a gold digger just like lilly frfr" thing . She was a cultural icon in germany and even started to be sould in switzerland which is where ruth got the doll from and in typical american fashion , the small german company fell into ruin trying to protect its creative property from this much more powerfull american company and instead of now days were babrie doesnt even look like lilly anymore admitting to their fault continue to drag lillys name throug the dirt so that she can pretent to be the "savior" of this "dirty pice of plastic" and I´m sick and tired of it

As an adult who still loves these goofy movies I grew up with, in recent nostalgic rewatches, Erica’s cat Wolfie is a great metaphor for being trans and/or non-binary. He displays attributes and behaviors outside of what we expect but is still accepted and appreciated and deserving it love.

34:37 "Annalise and Barbie pulled themselves up by their bra straps and articulated their own independence in a courages way, but never directly the power dynamics that were creating the inequalities that trapped them in the first place"
Basically; "You can be anything you want, as long as you don't rock the boat"
Or "Be who you are; Except if who your are disrupts the status quo"

43:10 okay but in mainstream media hyperfeminine characters are usually potrayed as one-dimensional side characters most likely the protagonist's love interest. this is definitely not the case in the barbie movies. So we could say that barbie actually rewrites the meaning of femininity as decision making, power, assertiveness and self awareness. You don't have to posses masculine characteristics to have traditional masculine traits such as will, thought or self control. The barbie movies actually reclaim those traits to be purely feminine.

The implication that "will, thought and self control" are seen as masculine traits is genuinely horrifying, not only because it makes feminity seem inhuman and thoughtless but also because it sees "thought and self control" as a given to males

yeah i agree here. looking at barbie alone its not great obviously but i think barbie does well for the place it has in the larger media scene today. there are plenty of women who are strong characters with masculine traits but not as many who are strong characters with feminine traits. meanwhile barbie is as feminine as they come but the narrative is always that she/the female protagonist is very capable and can do anything she needs to to help people or save the world and she never has to compromise on her femininity. that's powerful when young girls everywhere are being told that being feminine means they're weak.

One thing I like about barbie movies is that barbie and her sometimes girlfriends are always in fantasy adventures together. They're the center of the story in a kingdom with mermaids, fairies, and magic, often fighting against a villain in a quest to be yourself. I feel like a lot of confirmed representation is with either minor background characters, or any gay character arc is just a coming out story. It's nice to have these movies as a way to see someone who could be like you.

I saw Erica's cat as a trans metaphor. Biologically a cat but acts more like a dog. He tries to fit in as a cat by attempting to meow but Erica sees how uncomfortable is trying to be something he isn't and reassures him that he doesn't have to be 100% a cat.
I'm not trans so if I'm misreading it, someone please tell me.

This is the first time I've had a man make a whole commentary on not just Barbie, a inherently femme topic, but also on femme queerness, the mold of society and queer gals all around cutting their barbie's hair off while having to fit the "perfect girl" role out in public or around family. You did such a good job, dang. Like sometimes there is a element of "I kinda don't know" when guys make very good points on literally anything related to girls let alone queer ones, so thank you for getting it and making a whole history lesson!
