These are *not* the jumbo MFD pickups founf in the ASAT Special. They are based on drawings found in Leo's papers after his death and are meant to improve on the Jazzmaster he designed in the late 1950s.
I’ve had my build to order USA Doheny for more then a year now and it is by far and away the most versatile guitar I’ve owned. I’ve owned around 50 which includes the top brands. For me it is the perfect blues guitar. The PTB system is amazing for sculpting tone. Being able to adjust the pickup screws in the MFD pickups makes a BIG difference! I love mine and play it everyday. Thanks for the great demo!
Thanks Jonathan. Great demo at 2:00, tasty playing and really appropriate for showing off the guitar's clean sound. Seems like a modernized Jazzmaster with good bridge options.
Please note these are not the same Jumbo MFD pups found in the ASAT deluxe.. these are Magnetic Field Design™ jazz pickups my thanks to Mike Austin for the correction ✌️🤓
I was almost convinced for the jazzmaster, but didn't like the rosewood neck and was afraid of all intonation/tunning issues... and i have learned so much about G&L today, im getting this guitar ! Wonderful, ashamed that I haven't noticed this brand in my 15 years of guitar playing (thought its some copycat brand) :---| Thanks for the video!
I own 2 jazzmasters, one I have put a mastery bridge in (drops right in, barely considered a mod at all) and it solved any and all tuning issues when using the vibrato. The other has a tunomatic which I'm hoping to change to a Mastery also. But this Doheny also looks great, even though the strat style vibrato gives it a different look. I would take one in sunburst or sonic blue
I hope to get one of these one day played one when I visited Japan in June sounded amazing especially the neck pick up but that applies to regular Jazzmaster guitars as well. I had the money to get it but chose a Fender American Professional over it and don't regret it as it's an Amazing Guitar.
Glad you do these videos. Worked in a music store years ago that started getting G&L just before we closed that branch. always wanted 1 of their strat like models but never had the chance to get 1. Nowaday's they're outta reach both price wise n availability. Only 1 store barely within driving distance carries them n it's a really scummy place I'd never buy from.
Love that jazzy sound, looks like G&L has done it again, beautiful guitar, but is it heavy and comfortable in the sitting position, love your playing thanks again.
How would this compare with the Fender American Performer Jazzmaster or at the other end of the Fender spectrum as in a Squier Classic Vibe '60s Jazzmaster? G&L looks to be a wonderfully build guitar but I have no xp with them.
In terms of sound, different.. As the jumbo MFD pickups had a distinct sound of their own. In terms of playablity, it depends on each individual taste. This guitars plays great ✌️😊
Hi Jonathan Thank you for replying to my message to you. Did you get a chance to have a listen to Bombora by the Atlantics. Please let me know what think of the surf sounds created on a vintage Fender pre L series strat. I would like to know your comments Keeep up your awsome playing....!!!!.
Hi Jonathan….. I have not played one of these guitars. Yes... I do like the sound of this guitar.. It sounds fat and beefy Jonathan you can make any guitar sound good. If you want to have a listen to a terrific surf song Pleas have a listen to a song by the Atlantics ( Aussie Band. ) to a track called Bombora. This was played by a friend of mine called Jim Skiathitis. He used a pre L series strat on the recording. Please let me know what you think.... I think you might enjoy listening to Australia greatest surf band. Take care.. Cheers to you.
Hello, just found your video as I am looking for a good Surf guitar as the Fenders I like are all back ordered. Can this G&L Doheny get a good Surf sound even if it has the different sounding pick ups or is it more important using the proper amp? I found this model in stock but need a sound not too dark. Thank You!!
This baby has the ability for full bodied but "Airy" tone at the same time it seems, to me anyways. That probably will mesh very favorably with unusual or over the top effects and fuzzes too I guess. I'm sure the PTB system can sculpt it into almost anything imaginable with those awesome pickups. I'm glad I grabbed a Tribute model before they became scarce and, it is worth every penny and then some for sure. What an amazingly impressive operation G&L is!

My bad!!!! Thanks for the heads up Mike✌️
And they do sound different
Jonathan, thank you for playing the guitar at the same spot as you changed pickups. You really brought the tonality of each pup setting to the fore.
Glad to be of help✌️❤️
Thanks again, Jon, and hello from our new channel! 🙏 #dohenyguitar #doheny #glguitars

Yes. . Spot on. Though the pickups are different from the jazz master pickups which I love 🤓✌️
I just bought one on Reverb. Sonic Blue with inlays, Fullerton version. Looking forward to receiving it.
Kevin Musso cool!! I’m envious🤪
Please note these are not the same Jumbo MFD pups found in the ASAT deluxe..
these are Magnetic Field Design™ jazz pickups
my thanks to Mike Austin for the correction ✌️🤓
What's the difference between the asat ones and the Doheny ones?

Wider bobbins and the winding
Jon, all guitars in your hands sounds great!!
I fell in love with offset body guitars and will buy the Doheny in the near future. Thanks for making this video. It made my decision easier.
Glad I could help!✌♥
Great playing as usual. thanks Jonathan.
Thanks buddy! ✌️
Hi, i have look by Thomann they have this Guitar in surf green. LG Detlev
Always like your reviews and I really like the G&L guitars!
Thank you so much Steve ✌️🤓
Just sold my telecaster and bought a Doheney. Such a cool guitar and a very stark contrast from a very traditional “vintage” T style guitar
Cool!! Which color did you get??🤓
Jonathan Koh exactly like this one 😎
Ben Salzmann nice! The Doheney made just a great impression on me.. great guitar✌️🤓
Sounds wonderful. I have the tribute version I really like it.
✌🤓
Great review and playing as usual Jonathon. That guitar has an individual, and excellent tone.
Oh yes it does doesn't it... I'm really liking the jumbo MFDs on these guitars too..🤓✌️
Love your reviews. You seem such a gentle and friendly guy too. Subbed!
Thank you ✌️❤️

Please do a review of G&L Fullerton Deluxe Doheny HH ?
I second this

The pickups on the Doheny and the dual fulcrum bridge is the selling point for me 🤓✌️

Thanks..I love playing then G&Ls..🤓✌️
I would LOVE to have this neck pickup tone 😍🙌🏼 tasty playing, sir!
Thank you Hector!✌♥
Love that jazzy sound, looks like G&L has done it again, beautiful guitar, but is it heavy and comfortable in the sitting position, love your playing thanks again.
Watch the whole video Jesse..I mention all the questions you asked..✌️🤭
Yes I did thank you, l meant that sitting down a heavy guitar can tend to slide or feel neck heavy, especially for a little guy or older person.
@@jessebarrera159 no issues there. It was basicslly meant to be played sitting. Great guitar.
Interesting guitar, great (clean) sounding pickups. Thank you for sharing this review :-)
Your welcome Harald..I enjoyed doing it 🤓✌️
Excellent review!
Glad you liked it!✌❤
The pickups sound very unique, not quite p90 but i like them. cool guitar Jonathan!! Have a a great weekend buddy:)
Thank you buddy!! You have a great weekend too ✌️🤓
Sounded fantastic.
Thank you brother ✌️🤓

Nice tone , Great Demo Jonathan. I am noticing the past few backing tracks you used the Bass / Low end is a tad Hot Clipping. Still Amazing through...
Hi... What is clipping?? The backing tracks it the guitar? ✌️
Jon is NOT too loud, John is JUST to good ! Exquisite tone……😉
Thank you ✌❤

Keeep up your awsome playing....!!!!.
Thank you ✌🤓
i think i would actually prefer that 2 point trem system over the ones on the fender version. GREAT REVIEW!
The G&L dual fulcrum is my favorite ever since I first started playing on it...😆✌️

Nick Foudoulis thank you maté!! I actually love the music that comes out of Australia!! Southern sons, Jet, LRB among many others✌️❤️
Nice one as usual bro! 🤘🤘🤘
Thanks ✌️
First thought: this guy can play. I already knew the guitar was great.
✌️❤️
Pretty sure those aren't the same pickups as the ASAT Special. They're both MFD but this goes for more jangle than twang live the ASAT does.
Nope they are not...these are Magnetic Field Design™ jazz pickups :)

Getting a good sound in what ever genre depends on a couple of factors.. the way you play.. guitar pickups, effects and amps✌️❤️
nice
😆
Was that a particular song you played at 9:05 ?
Nah I was just fooling around✌️❤️
@@JonIsJustTooLoud very cool!
Great sound--what amp and effects, if any are you using?
Line 6 Helix Native✌️❤️
Of all the G&L's you have reviewed, if you could only pick one, which one would you go with and why?
I actually have one more review to go... Let me answer you after the latest video!! 😆✌️
