That little $400 bugger is it. I pick it up tomorrow. The only strat I can compare it to is my friend’s American special that was probably $1800 new. The special had the looks, but this guitar just sounds and plays fantastic period. First strat I’ve truly vibed with since then. Just one man’s opinion, but it seems to be shared by many!
ordered a G&L custom build 2 years ago prior to my second daughter being born. Got myself a nice ASAT classic in shell pink, spec'd to just how I like it and it also happened to be through music store live (they have yet to let me down). All for less than a Fender American Pro. It was perfect right out of the box and has stayed that way.
Hey Phillip, I have a dozen guitars, Strat, Gretsch, Partscasters, Epi LP etc.. play in a little weekend band.. everyone always tells me me G&L is their favorite tone.. I think its primarily the MFD pups.. very well made. This axe in yr vid , with all the custom options looks tremendous, and beautiful. I think youll like the Tribute. @@paulscushschofield1288 I just got an ASAT Tribute Special, after doing research and trying to find a tele with p-90 style pickups. I am *so* happy with the quality of this guitar. Absolutely incredible. And I was unfamiliar with G&L until 3 months ago. They're the Fender-lover's secret!
@@kbadr I bought a G&L Tribute ASAT Special Deluxe (that's a mouthful) Those pickups are awesome! They're not P-90s and have almost the output of a P-90 but Jumbo MFDs are way brighter. P-90s always seem kind of dark and middy to me and at worst muddy. The G&L, on the other hand, is really punchy and bright, but not ice-picky like some teles can be. I can still get some passable tele tones out of the bridge but it's a completely different animal. Always in your face, punchy and bright, a total rock and roll machine that does double duty as a country guitar. Listen to Band of Susans they built their whole band around that pickup.
My G&L Legacy is my #1. Those guitars just fit me perfectly and play like a dream, especially when you custom order one. I'm ordering another one with humbuckers in the future. I love G&L!
Looks and sounds fantastic! I've played a couple of their Tribute series and was really impressed with the quality and playability. Blew Fender's out of the water that were like double the price.
That is the third Tele style guitar I've ever heard that I love the sound of and it didn't ice-pick my brain like so many others do. THANK YOU! ❤️🎸❤️🎸❤️
Not being a "T-style" lover.... I really like this one! Love the headstock, the comfort carves, and those pickups sound great! I do own a Legacy...and it is the BEST "S-style" guitar I have ever played!
@@grantkoeller8911 LOL! I'm not much of a fan of single-cuts in general. Plus, I don't care for the headstock on most "T-style guitars. I love the sound of a Tele... and made my own...in a double cut style similar to one that I had seen Gary Moore play in a video. Mine has a humbucker in... the middle position, along with the standard T-style pickups to make it even stranger. I also added the "comfort carves" to mine. What can I say...... I did own a G&L ASAT Special with the p-90-ish pickups. Never should have sold that one!
Back in the late 80's I was very lucky to have won a G&L ASAT Classic, via Guitar Extra magazine. It is still one of my favorite Guitars in my collection.
Looks fantastic! Middle position was really buttery and nice. Love the combo of new and old. All the good stuff that makes the guitar play better combined with all that cool, vintage look. 👍
I have a 1993 USA Legacy that I picked up for $500 dollars a couple of years back and it’s my favorite guitar, neck radius is a bit flatter than the USA fenders and the thing has massive frets on it and the neck carve is a little thinner as well. It sounds incredible and the PTB controls really allow for a lot more versatility than a traditional strat. I love the thing!
Much agree with you because this whole modern day internet stuff. Pretty much everything is monkey see monkey do nowadays people can't develop their own opinions and they're always looking for other people's opinions on what's good and what's bad. I'm surprised G&L hasn't taken off like a rocket because of the internet but for some reason it hasn't. Like you said I kind of like that because now we're not going to have a bunch of posers jumping on. Just give it time though people will start realizing that these guitars are great
I have a ASAT Special and a Legacy from the early 90’s that are both amazing guitars. I was surprised when I had the neck off of my Legacy I saw the QC signature was Leo’s which just made it that much cooler to me.
@@tiki_trash I put a TX Special Strat pickup between the big MFD pickups on my ASAT with 7 way switching and it’s one of my favorite guitars. The Strat PU mixed with the MFD gives it a lot of tone options. It has a “quack” but it’s fuller than a traditional Strat one.
I own 3 G&Ls - 2 guitars and one bass. All purchased 2nd hand, and I consider them to be awesome value for money. Recommended! I keep reading the Tributes are very good as well, but haven't tried any.
I currently own a Comanche Tribute and an ASAT Deluxe semi-hollow. I owned and foolishly sold a S500 Deluxe. All of my G&Ls are great guitars that blow away a Fender dollar for dollar. They are not identical, and the pups definitely have a different sound - similar but different and better.
I got my first G&L in 2018. Got a real sweet deal on a Legacy HB usa 2010 with a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge position and G&L alnico V in the middle and neck. I love Fender Strats, got a couple of them, but this guitar has become my main axe. It can cut through any mix, and you can play almost anything with it. My next one is gonna be a Tele just like yours, Philip!
I watch numerous youtube channels. If I ever had to choose 1 to subscribe to, this channel would be the one! Very informative, so much that I've been sprucing up issues on my guitars based on stuff I've learned from this channel.
Wasn't expecting to have my suspicions confirmed that the neck on my MiM PJ Mustang bass is quartersawn today, but definitely thanks for covering that!
I was going to buy one just like it. Those pickups can have a huge effect on the tone by adjusting the pole pieces. You can get a traditional sound by moving the pickup poles farther away from the strings. Or a hotter metal sound by moving them closer. I wasn't thrilled about the head stock though. I really like my American Pro 2 Fender Telecastor I settled for.
The G&L also has individual brass saddles. But my new Telecaster has compensated brass saddles and they work well as I managed to adjust my intonation as close as any of my other guitars.
Great review! Finally someone who will play simple chords to show the range of the strings lows and mids and stuff like that instead of only solos like NO ONE would USE chords for a great songs ;)
I'm a bass player, started in '69 with a Fender Mustang. I've had a lot of basses from Ibanez, BC Rich, Rickenbacker, Fender, Ovation but my absolute favorites are G&L. Leo's last and best. Thanks for the look-see, gorgeous guitar Phillip!
I have an '88 G&L ASAT 3 that I should never have except for circumstances beyond my control. I always fantasized that Leo himself touched that guitar. It's a 'Player's Guitar' (not my words but the previous owner's) Swamp Ash just like Phil's, same neck, but it has an extra pick-up, 5 point selector switch, and no cutaways. Chef's kiss!
You should have a million subscribers by now, at least, and I don't know how you don't. Thoroughly enjoy everything you conjure up here. Keep on keepin' on, Phil!
Old guy here, I don’t mind admitting that. Had a very early G&L, the original F-100 bought new in 1981 which was the company’s first guitar model. Three-bolt neck but NEVER an issue because the neck pocket fit was laser tight, a huge improvement over the often sloppy neck pocket cuts on Fenders at the time. I still am obsessive about neck pocket gaps in bolt-on guitars to this day! ;-)
Own two Skyhawks and an Invader from the mid 80’s with the 3 bolt, micro tilt necks. Love them. No issues whatsoever. Wish the still had the adjustable necks. Setups are so easy.
My sister has an F-100 Series II, I've got one of the first 12 or so silver sparkle Asats...my dad and his buddy were G&L collectors for many years, probably had 100 between the two of them. My dad had the only two left handed Broadcasters, his friend just sold one of his X body Interceptors for like 25 grand
I like the G&L "hook" headstock but I think the ASAT is my least favorite shape of the bunch but we have all seen much worse designs. So yeah, it still gets a thumbs up from me. (edit) The G&L ASAT headstock is a little bit longer than a Tele's and won't fit some cases.
@@splittinaces9540 and that's exactly some people's problems but that's okay leave the g&l guitars for us. I always hear people complaining about how ugly the tremelo is. The facts are that is a superior tremolo to any fender guitar and once you own one you stop thinking it's ugly and you start appreciating it because it's good. Trust me I wouldn't pull up the trigger on a G&L for years because I was being a big baby about the way the bridge looked. Once I picked one up I definitely felt stupid. I was talking to text so there's typos please forgive me
Love these videos and the new Nylon Sock of Fretfulness. Can't wait to see a maker's response to this. I'm picturing QC folks with these socks on their hands, rubbing away. G&L with all that customization without the BIG price is amazing.
My semi-custom G&L bass is set to arrive tomorrow. Perfect timing-maybe I should do an unboxing. I now have 3 G&L guitars and no more USA Fenders. Had some good Fenders, but a surprising amount of bad ones. G&L is a wonderful company, and their special order guitars are worth the wait!
I have a ton of Tele's (they're my favorite electric guitar), but my go to "Telecaster" is an ASAT Classic Bluesboy semi-hollow (with no F holes) that I've modded with Seymour Duncan custom shop pups. My G&L ASAT is a Tele killer if there ever was one. That's a beautiful ASAT you have there, Mr. Phillip McKnight.
Great video, and sweet guitar! I'm a little surprised G&L isn't mentioned in the title.. e.g. "G&L : More Options Than Fender Custom Shop With Production Prices"
Even without the extra routing for more pickup configs, it's still just north of 7lbs. I'm impressed with how light that is. I'm sure it'd be really comfortable playing live.
I have played a few G&Ls. They are quite comfortable, come with most of the finish work done ( once in a while one or two things will get missed , nothing your local shop can't handle in less than 5 minutes of finish work ). And the sounds are quite impressive. Craftsmanship is above unremarkable. You should try one or two if you are in the market.
G&L is sooooo underrated!! Purchased my first one a while back, is a double bound Thin-line Bluesboy. Custom ordered with a pile of options. Made a deal with a friend who was going through a rough time and needed cash. Told him if anytime within the next year he could come up with the bucks to buy it back, No Problem. Wasn't expecting to really fall in Love with the G&L, having enough similar to it. Have to admit, after a few months I Really liked it, over the next bunch of months was secretly hoping he couldn't come up with the cash to buy it back while equally feeling bad about thinking it. One day called him and said I'd pay another $500 if It could be mine outright. Figured I didn't pay that much and was worth it. Now one of my Fav's! Purchased two more G&L's since. They are not the same as a Fender, so don't expect it. Stand in a class all their own, build is excellent and playability and tone are terrific. Like most guitars they are another tool in the toolbox, these happen to be a multi tool with a boatload of tonal options. Lucky in Canada there aren't a pile of G&L's around so the resale seems to be good. Anyone looking for something a bit different from a Tele or Strat, check em out, certainly worth the time.
I've had two G&Ls over the years; nicest solid body electric guitars I've owned. Phil's experience isn't unique, they're simply underappreciated in the market.
Thanks again, Phil, and hello from our new channel 🙏

It's a 'Player's Guitar' (not my words but the previous owner's) Swamp Ash just like Phil's, same neck, but it has an extra pick-up, 5 point selector switch, and no cutaways. Chef's kiss!
Love G&L I have an ASAT and Legacy both early 90s can't say enough about these instruments. QUALITY. Great Video!
That middle postion sounds phenomenal.
Phil
My 3rd G&L is going through the shop right now. My first one i ordered 30 years ago. 👋
That unplugged strum sounds amazing
You should have a million subscribers by now, at least, and I don't know how you don't. Thoroughly enjoy everything you conjure up here. Keep on keepin' on, Phil!
Thank you for your time Phil!
I tried out a used G&L ASAT Tribute series guitar and I fell in love with it. Unfortunately I didn't have the money to buy it at the time.
Beautiful medullary rays in the maple fingerboard / neck! That, I understand, comes from being perfectly quartersawn. Nice
Subscribed. Very comprehensive review. Bought the maple neck version today.
Wow! That baby has a gorgeous tone., Just like Crispy bells lol. Lovin’ this format Brother🤘🏼
Such a great breakdown. Thanks, Phillip.
my bluesboy asat is that same finish and cuts such an awesome mix of old and new vibe. Its light and fast.
Looks and sounds perfect! I can tell you really like it. :)
I am liking the guy doing the demo...nice job!
Buying a G&L used may be the best electric guitar bargain out there. They sound terrific, I am not surprised to see lots of great players using them.
Bought my 93' Legacy for $650 in 2011. I'd say its easily worth double that in terms of quality and sound.
@@UglyTheDucklingI completely agree!
Absolutely!
First came across G&L through your videos and now I really want one, they just sound fantastic and look great! Thanks for the great content!
Thanks for reviewing G&L. I've been searching for more info on them.
I still am obsessive about neck pocket gaps in bolt-on guitars to this day! ;-)
I have an 82 F-100.
@@acousticpsychosis Wow, great experience!
@@anthonyc1883 Sometimes having G.A.S. can be beneficial lol
Just my humble opinion, the big G&L headstock is a great shaped and size that complements the rest of the guitar really well.
Different strokes for different folks. The headstock is the reason I will never own one. Just plain ugly IMO.
Love ‘em. My SC2 has a big ole headstock. Classy
I was talking to text so there's typos please forgive me
Beautiful guitar...those MFD pick-ups are incredible!!!!
They sure are. Those pickups also come stock in the S500
Love the G&L !
Love these videos and the new Nylon Sock of Fretfulness. Can't wait to see a maker's response to this. I'm picturing QC folks with these socks on their hands, rubbing away. G&L with all that customization without the BIG price is amazing.
Love, love, love the clean tones. So full.
You hit that middle position and it just blew my mind!
Didn’t catch which exact model this is. Very impressed.
Lovely chime tones out of that guitar - quality from where I stand.
Great video, and sweet guitar! I'm a little surprised G&L isn't mentioned in the title.. e.g. "G&L : More Options Than Fender Custom Shop With Production Prices"
First strum through the amp - gorgeous!
Shame about the headstock!
Congratulations on 300k subs. 👍🏻 Nice guitar.
Super underrated company. Even their imported tribute line is great stuff.
Agreed!
Agreed!
Oh hey! Great video!!
We're glad to be of service :)
Telecaster middle about 2/3 to 3/4 back on the tone is my sweet spot…
Great video!
Awesome! Thanks for the review. I’m thinking about picking up a classic blues boy in orangy red..
Love my G&L! Thanks for the video.
