As a JP to EN translator, thank you for including the fact that Paladins are Knights in Japanese sometimes (localization can be odd sometimes). If I wasn’t already subscribed, I’d do it again based on that factoid alone.
And I'm still skimming over the lists, which seem to generally go with either Kishi or Naito, though Tactics and some others use Paradin, at least for some later games. It's like they wanted localization to be easier, but take away much nuance in translation as a result, since it's often just katakana
@@ToHoldNothing Odd thing is that FF14 A Realm Reborn had extremely close contact with the localization side, but they still went with Paladin in English, which is how they did FF11 (knight in JP). Paladin was only used in Katakana in reference to Cecil, FF Tactics Advance 1/2, and in Final Fantasy Explorers, as far as I know. Every other white magic-using tank was always ナイト/knight. One of the first things I learned as a localizer was to keep things as close as possible in the game blows up on TV or eSports or whatever, so that every term will sound the same in every language, in case of TV broadcast... We had some difficulties at a company I worked at where we were given too much liberty to localize. It was a good localization, but that mobile game has been dead for 2 years now.
@@Ironsharp Yeah, I'll admit my "database" is really rough on keeping track of each individual game and what they refer to a Job as. Kishi is pretty rare, though in that case, one is curious why that's avoided except for concerns of localization
Whenever I criticize the English localization team and/or Michael-Christopher Koji Fox for some of the changes they make in Final Fantasy XIV, their supporters come out of the woodwork to defend these changes. *POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR FINAL FANTASY XIV: SHADOWBRINGERS AND ENDWALKER* When I mentioned, for example, that Lyna tells us in Japanese spoken dialogue that the Crystal Exarch is like a grandfather to her, they say that is too weird in English - even though Cassard tells us in non-voiced English dialogue the very same thing in the level 79 Main Scenario Quest, In His Garden, in the Crystarium in Patch 5.0!* It's only too weird, it seems, if it's said in English. Written English is just fine. I brought this up one of Mrhappy's Endwalker videos on TH-cam. Either he or someone else immediately deleted the comment, even though I mentioned no names. It was a general criticism of the change, eliminating mentioning the grandfather-and-granddaughter relationship, including in Lyna's English spoken dialogue to us personally, in her farewell to the Scions speech in Shadowbringers 5.3. I get less flack in criticizing Yoshi-P. Koji, on the other hand, is untouchable. Some who follow the English dialogue actually believe that Lyna is in love with the very old man Exarch. One guesses they find that preferable. (Like Livia views Gaius, perhaps? Check The Sorrow of Werlyt quests.) Maybe they assumed that players would recall the Cassard scene and the non-voiced cutscene between the Exarch and Lyna in Patch 5.3, in which thereafter Lyna sobs uncontrollably, and remember that they are like grandfather and granddaughter. Unfortunately, a lot of players didn't. Maybe they skipped, breezed, and/or forgot these non-voiced dialogues. *The FFXIV player whose TH-cam video I just checked for this comment, for example, to see precisely in which MSQ quest (In His Garden) Cassard tells us that the Crystal Exarch and Lyna are like grandfather and granddaughter, just blazed through this non-voiced English dialogue. Unless they're a fantastic speed reader, they probably missed this relationship entirely. The video was uploaded on TH-cam on July 6, 2019, soon after Shadowbringers's release date of July 2, 2019. Rushing through MSQ will cause one to miss a lot of details in the story. As emotional Shadowbringers Patch 5.3 is in English, it is even more emotional, to a great extent because Lyna's view of the Crystal Exarch as her beloved grandfather - who helped raised her after her parents were killed by sin eaters when she was young - is acknowledged and spoken in Japanese... but not spoken in English. A lot of English-speaking FFXIV players love the work of Lyna's English VA, Icelandic actress Salóme Gunnarsdóttir. Imagine how much more emotional Lyna's farewell speech to the Scions had she known of Lyna's special relationship to the Crystal Exarch / G'raha Tia? Lyna's farewell speech in English is delivered well, but remains somehow emotionally distant, as if were delivered by another resident of Norvrandt, say the Crystarium librarian Moren. To me, the emotional high point of all the farewells in English in Patch 5.3 is the scenes between Seto and Ardbert. While those scenes are similarly as moving in Japanese, the most emotional farewell in Japanese in Patch 5.3, for me, is Lyna's farewell speech in Japanese, delivered by her Japanese voice actress, Yoshino Nanjō, who also voices Krile and Suzaku in Japanese, as well as sings as Suzaku in "Sunrise," the theme song for the Stormblood trial Hells' Kier, in both Normal and Extreme versions. Although we don't know what will happen in future patches and expansions, but for now, in Japanese, in Shadowbringers, Lyna says farewell forever to her beloved grandfather, the Crystal Exarch, or G'raha Tia. Nanjō, like her fellow Japanese voice actress Rie Tanaka - Tanaka voices more characters in FFXIV than anyone else, Ameliance Leveilleur, Kan-E-Senna, Garuda, Sadu and Sophia in Japanese, plus Female Miqo'te Voice Type 1, Female Miqo'te Voice Type 2, and Female Elezen Voice Type 3 player characters, regardless of language since PCs don't speak words in FFXIV - are pretty hardcore gamers. Lead singer of the Japanese pop and trance duo fripSide since 2009, Nanjō, who is perhaps best known as the speaking and singing voice of Eli Ayase in the big Japanese anime idol multimedia franchise Love Live!, is a huge fan of Final Fantasy XIV. She has cosplayed as her FFXIV character, Krile. Tanaka has her own gaming channel on TH-cam, playing games like the Dark Souls series, Demon Souls, Nioh, Nioh 2, and other "easy" video games, and is famous for cosplaying many of her anime and game characters, including FFXIV's Sadu. Tanaka also voices in Japanese Emina Hanaharu in Final Fantasy Type-0 and Faris Scherwiz, whenever she is voiced. Here is what I wrote on another FFXIV TH-cam video: In Final Fantasy XII, the female Viera Fran - who also makes an appearance in the Ivalice alliance raid quests in Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood, because of the Yasumi Matsuno connection - is voiced in English with an Icelandic accent by Australian actress Nicole Fantl. (Fantl is a Jewish family name of Ladino / Judaeo-Spanish / Sephardic Jewish origin.) Fantl played Senator Lexi Dio in Attack of the Clones. Apparently, Icelandic singer-songwriter Björk inspired the Icelandic accent. The FFXIV English localization would continue this trend, with Viera (Viis on the First), female and male, sporting Icelandic accents. Real Icelandic actors voice in English Lyna, played by Salóme Gunnarsdóttir; Cymet, played by Melkorka Óskarsdóttir; and Erenville, played by Ari Óskarsson. Óskarsson graduated from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London, London, England, UK. According to Óskarsdóttir, she is an Icelandic actress based in England.
@@crusherjoe8519 For all sorts of reasons, there is a typically fair bit of editing and rewriting between JP and EN. I would never call it "gatekeeping" as is the popular term, but there are sometimes edits based on personal tastes and/or judgment calls made by translators or their teams that they cannot exactly have a dialogue with their fans about before release. I am not familiar with a lot of the Shadowbringers story, so I can't say either way, but communication with the userbase/fans should always be a top priority. If you could possibly link a comparison between the two languages' dialogue, I could give a more cold, hard opinion. There are some things I could name in FF that are inconsistently localized, etc., but I'd like to see evidence with my own eyes first.
3d draw attacks with counter was amazing and mobile had fair with brutal option though new game plus didn’t carry over levels and Kain steals the defender permanently if you equip and he leaves the party. I can’t go back to 2d let alone Ultima twincast with Rosa to beat Golbez, which new game plus has limit break augment to go past 9999 damage cap which regular attacks and summons are close late game, let alone the ordeal of twincast to give twins item lore, curse and auto potion augments (new game plus Carrie’s over to give bad ones). Maybe new game plus is for dualcast and hard mode, and that extra boss. 11:23 FFT has ff6 timestamp. I would say that holy knight is too offensive based but plot sure paladin. Good comment about chant being a type of cover by healing. I do feel samurai iaido to buff Allies is as close to cover as you can get.
I'm kinda surprised the Warrior of Light didn't get mentioned with Cecil in the Dissidia portion considering unlike the other versions of knight that are mentioned here, WoL double downs on the light connection.
I think you could make the argument that Steiner evolves into a paladin throughout the course of FFIX, of course he can't use white magic, but he learns Beatrix abilities and he becomes more than a simple knight following orders, he becomes a real guardian for Dagger and even Beatrix, guided by his own righteousness, but that's just my opinion
So cool! I'm really liking these less recurrent classes but still important and present in many games without realizing like with Sages. Personally (and this is purely me) I considered Ashe a paladin too because in vanilla XII I used her as the knight who heals but as far as I'm concerned you can choose different class paths for any character so it wouldn't count. (Also, choosing TPR music is always *chef's kiss*)
One (easily missed) correction about FFXIV's paladin. Though Save the Queen as a weapon from the Bozja story isn't available to PC Paladins, its model (mostly) is - it's actually a reskin of the Diamond Sword from the Omega raids (available in Omega 8 Savage or with tokens from it).
They really are. The Sage one really opened my eyes into how the developers constructed the Sage from the existing gameplay of Sage while giving it a unique space. I personally am looking forward to the Evolution of Scholars I want to see if there is a similar gameplay link there.
You guys Missed something, while Paladin is Human exclusive in Final Fantasy tactics advance. Bangaas had a paladin variant called Templar (Temple Knight) which was more focused on acting as an anti-magic tank whit there Sacred Technique commands.
Damn that history lesson about where the name Paladin, came from is awesome even though the knights back then weren’t all holy, and righteous knights, but i knew they were originally a classic in dungeons and dragons but final fantasy has a lot to thank to DND. Though i gotta say the Paladin is one of my favorite classes in anything up there with draggons, and dark knights, like god literally i could gush so much about them because there’s so much great about them they have such badass armors, and weapons, and their personalities are charming, and charismatic which makes you strive for and love them, since they are equally deep characters, but i especially love Cecil, since i just think he’s a really cool, and epic character, but also because he’s the first character to have the class i was introduced to, and it instantly made me fall in love.
I feel like Ninja/Thief would be a fun job to do for this series, although I will admit since they've been around for a while, they might take a while. Also while some characters would be obvious, such as Yuffie, Shadow, Edge, Zidane, and such, would Vaan technically count? Because while he's not a Shikari by default, that seemed to have been the job he's most associated with.
@@Jimalcoatl correct me if I'm wrong, but as I remember he was the only character in his game with the "steal" command, isn't it? That could make him the "thief" of the team, although his not called specifically that way
Zidane and Locke are really hard to classify. They're hybrid classes. Both are thieves, yet they both use very large, very powerful weapons and abilities like knights. Amarant is the ninja, though he's also part monk with his Flair abilities. Vaan I suppose you could call a leigeman like Firion.
There's serious overlap of Thief and Ninja, in part because of how the original game's progression had that start for Thief and then become Ninja. Yuffie's amusing in how she's really both a Thief and a Ninja, while Amarant is a Ninja with sublevels in Monk. Zidane's more a pure Thief, same as Locke from 6 would be classified roughly.
In Brave Exvius Cecil has a better version after the one you showed called Paladin Cecil in fact, and is a Magic Tank that can cover AOE enemy magic with some healing capabilities and some buffs. Pretty good unit when he came out, not in the meta atm.
As if anyone needed any further convincing that Cecil is the best paladin of all time in any and every example. Luckily, Daryl's soothing voice brings a lot more information. I didn't know the origins of the term, for example! I remember using a team of Paladin, Monk, Ninja, and Red Wizard in my first completed game of Final Fantasy.
I’m glad Tidus got an honorable mention, haste and other abilities of his seemed to splash paladin along with other narrative based class assignments in the franchise which seem to offer up fusion as an alternative to customization
PLD never got a "complete rework" in endwalker, it got a combo extension and a buff to their unique mitigation ability (which every tank except drk also got)
@@Zephhi Nah, drk got the highest dps of every tank and TBN is still crazy good. Drk is now *the* de facto off tank and speedkill tank. If anything, Gunbreaker got fucked over. War is busted as usual, Pld is mediocre at anything but has great flexible utility. Gunbreaker though? He's like a weak fusion of everyone else. Middle dps, middle utility, middle self healing, middle *everything* tbh.
Before I even knew about other final fantasies, I played 8 with squall junctioned with diablos and Alexander. Considering he pledged himself to Rinoa as her 'sorceress's knight' this basically made him a pally/dark knight. Especially if you put the brothers on him as well. He'd have cover/defend, darkside(which used hp to make his attack stronger) and revive. He also obviously could use white magic since they all could. Since I had yet to play any of the other final fantasies or dnd it was purely coincidence but it just felt right. I also, of course, raised his strength super high, along with zell and Irvine. They were obviously not knight classes though.
while it is not my go to tank (loving Gunbreaker right now) i can not deny how good it is in FF14 now. My favourite one though is Cecil, he just WRECKS and can take damage as well he dishes it out, sure his magic isnt that great but that is in battle, it still has use via the menu to save MP on the more powerful healer of the game, Rosa.
@@Chud_Bud_Supreme oh yeah, how could i forget my favourite single player FF Job System!!! That can work even better when you master some jobs and use Mimic/Traveller jobs for max effectiveness and stats.
Once again you do a fabulous job, chasing down so many details and really digging into the similarities and the differences between each "version" of Paladin!
Great stuff! The original idea of the paladin is of a holy warrior who draws upon the power of Christ’s holy light to serve gods will. Basically an enhanced version of the holy knights from the crusades irl. Very cool!
Quick correction to your FF14 bits. Paladin has actually been consistently one of the higher damage tanks, and has also historically taken the most damage, which is weird considering the Sword and Board aesthetic. The also didn't get reworked for Endwalker, but they are the mascot of the expansion.
I mentioned before on the White Mage video that my sister and I dressed as a White Mage and her tank for Halloween way back when. It was a very apt juxtaposition, considering she was a nurse and I was a cop. Because of that, I always tend to lean toward the cleric and knight archetype characters in most media.
Can you do evolution videos on the Ranger and Viking jobs please cuz I feel like that they are obscure jobs that get overlooked half the time and there are some unique characters who have them
After speaking of "Orlando Furioso", I'm quite intrigued for you to NOT mentioning Orlandu/Orlandeau in the FFT segment... He is the "Sword Saint", very similar to a paladin !! :O
I studied the Song of Roland under the incredible professor Zara P. Zaddy (who taught for some 25 years after she'd officially retired, she legendarily continued teaching uni medieval french literature and legend classes because spreading the joy of her subject was a passion), and it's an absolutely brilliant bit of writing. Roland himself has a character death so long and drawn out it belongs in a JRPG - he's mortally wounded, knows he will die, and still has time to attempt repeatedly to destroy his holy sword Durandal, only to fail because Durandal was *that* well forged, so instead he threw it into a cliffside where it remains embedded, legend goes, to this day. Also, Charlemagne's sword Joyeuse is one of the Legendary Weapon Names that often gets used as a mid to high tier sword in JRPGs.
Notably, Curtana or Cortana is also one of the swords of Charlemagne's court, a short sword wielded by Ogier the Dane. Cortana and Durandal are both AIs from Bungie games named after famous french swords. Bungie had a thing, and it was naming AIs for swords.
For some reason, youtube keeps recommending your videos to me multiple times. It's the third time I got this recommended to me. Guess I'm watching it for a third time then! :P
Once again another excellent video on this series history 👏. For the next job video I think warrior or dancer would be a good choice since they’ve actually been in many games when compared to to say something like time mage
Thanks, very interesting. Yeah the paladin has always been my favorite class in fantasy rpgs. I played one for three years in the original WoW the burning crusade, and have always loved their lore, duties, personalities and abilities. In WoW, I like Tyrion fordring, alexander molgraine, Muraad the vindicator, Turalyon, arthas and uther. In Final Fantasy, the original warrior of light, Cecil, Leo, Beatrix, Agrias and Weigraf are my faves, but yeah, beyond ff 11, the class and character seemed to become muddled. An argument could be made that Firion, Tidus and even cloud were paladins as well. Firion was a Leigeman and began with extra sword expertise and the "will" stat that powers white magic. Tidus was a guardian swordsman who also used white time magic, and cloud was infused with holy power and lifestream and protected Aerith. Steiner, Orlandu and possibly Auron and Cyan qualify as the next step up, sword saints, which adhere more to the Japanese kensei like Musashi myamoto, though they are of course much more focused on sword skills than white magic.
I love the evolution videos. I'd like to see a video about the airships, they're my favorite aspect of the franchise (specially because in my language they're called "Flying Boats" lol)
Note that FFXIV's Paladin use to Cross-Class White Mage (specifically its base class of Conjurer) skills. Meaning Paladin could, at one time, cast Cure, Protect, and Raise, though only out of combat (it lacked the trait that CNJ/WHM gets that allows use in combat). Which was useful in content like Palace of the Dead. It's also the only Job that realistically uses shields (Black Mage and White Mage technically CAN, but there are no good 1 handed weapons for them past level 50 and thus no options to wield shields, and they have no abilities with them anyway...) When Cross-Class skills went away in...I think it was 5.0 (Shadowbringers) but maybe it was 4.0 (Stormblood), Paladin still did have healing capability from the powerful spell Clemency, which is a strong heal and, if used on other players/party members, will also heal the Paladin for 50% of that value anyway, as well as Paladin having the Cover ability (take damage in place of an ally for 10 seconds or so), the best tank invulnerability in the game (Hallowed Ground, which makes them immune to all damage other than ultimate boss attacks/1 hit KO attacks), and has powerful defensive abilities like Passage of Arms (100% block rate and shields any party members standing behind you, reducing their damage taken to 85% of normal), Divine Veil (which gives a protection bubble to all party members when the Paladin activates it and receives a heal), and Intervention (which reduces damage a single party member takes - often used on other tanks when the Paladin is in an off tank position, but can be used on healers or the like in clutch situations). Paladin/Gladiator was also the origin Job/Class for Rampart and Provoke in FFXIV, I believe (Provoke might have come from Warrior/Marauder, I don't remember for sure). And in Shadowbringers and Endwalker (the latest expansion), also has both single target and aoe Holy attack spells. I think they're called Holy Spirit and Holy Circle, but it's basically single target and AOE Holy, just without the Stun that White Mage's Holy has. They also have a 4 hit combo magic blade attack now that caps off their "caster phase" which is a strong callback to the Holy Knight abilities in FFTactics where there is a giant spiritual blade (or set of blades) that they conjure to strike through the enemy. If you haven't, watch a video of the Endwalker Paladin abilities to see what I'm talking about, but it reminds me a lot of FFTactics. I use Gunbreaker (think Squal/Lightning) as my tank right now, but I used Paladin up through Shadowbringers and followed its changes for Endwalker. I think the complaint about its lore is more based on the Job quests mostly being focused on the Gladiator guild (think Romon coliseum) more than the honor and holy aspects of the Job, but the Job's aesthetic and playstyle very much embodies the Paladin motiefs of the series.
I enjoy each job/class video but I think my favorite ones are the videos that cover really niche or lesser known jobs. Like the Sage video was wild to me because I had no idea Sage was even that prominent in the series. In fact, I'm not sure I had even heard of the job before it was added to FFXIV. I'd like more niche job videos. But that's my preference.
In War of the Visions they have even given magic attackers like Terra and Ibara the Paladin sub job so that they can survive taking a couple of hits with Courage
Since they mentioned Bravely Default it would have been cool if they mentioned the Paladins in Tactics Ogre (FFT's daddy and also having some content in FFXIV) where we can see Lanselot Hamilton (recurring Paladin /Knight in the Ogre series) and Lanselot Tartaros (Death Templar, leader of the dark knights) as a great example of opossing sides fighting
Sorry to bring up pronunciation again, but the first syllable of "seiken" is pronounced like the English word "say". "Saiken", as pronounced in this video, means "rebuilding" (among other things).
The first MMO I ever played was called Kingdom of Drakkar. If you chose to be a Fighter and you were Good with Good tendencies (all characters start as G/G and only drop in alignment if they kill non-hostiles), then at level 8, you could re-dedicate to the Fighter/Paladin class. You'd start out with a +2 boost to Willpower and an extra attack roll, but then, at high skill levels, you'd gain Focus abilities. The first being Focus Parry, which made you essentially an impenetrable wall, but also gaining healing and attacking Focus abilities as you leveled up. It really cemented in my mind the notion of a Paladin not as a specialist or variant of the fighter/warrior set of classes, but rather as an elite and noble warrior. I wish more games took that approach. It should be noted that the only other "re-dedication" class was Fighter/Mentalist, which could be re-dedicated from either Fighter or Mentalist and served as a hybrid between the two. No requirements other than that you were a Fighter, Mentalist, or a Merchant (the base class before dedication to a class). That just made Fighter/Paladin even more special as a class.
Quick correction, Cecil was NOT of Royal Blood. He was NOT related at all to the king in any way shape or form, he was abandoned as a baby by his brother Theodore/Golbez (under the influence of Zemus). His mother was an outcast of Baron, and his Father was a Lunarian who taught magic and technology to those of the blue planet ;) No royal history.
Interestingly, Hendrik from DQXI shares many of the attributes you stated in this video. I know canonically he is a knight but my point still stands. I'm sure you guys played the game.
I wonder if Paladin from FF Brigade being accessed from White Mage and Monk is a reference to Dragon Quest, where in some games Paladin is accessed via mastering Martial Artist and Priest.
I didn't see it mentioned in the comments, but based on the "became nearly invulnerable to magic when using a holy sword" comment, I wonder if Celes (FFVI) and her "Runic" ability counts as her being paladin-like since the ability, when used, absorbs incoming magic spells and converts them into MP, the ability is also only available when Celes has a weapon with the "Runic" trait associated with it. if anything you could say that in FFVI, Square split paladin between Celes and General Leo.
I'd like to see analysis of the Berserker class. The examples that come to mind include the viking job in FF3, the less useful Berserker job in FFV, Umaro and Gao in FFVI, the Ranger asterisk in Bravely Default and Bravely Second having hybridization of Berserker qualities in aesthetics and battle, Saix in Kingdom Hearts 2 and 3 as bosses, the warrior in FFXIV, and the Berserker asterisk/Prince Castor from Bravely Default 2, which is actually the best playable version of the Berserker build EVER. Seriously, that game did justice for a handful of jobs that were otherwise mediocre to terrible in most previous iterations.
Good video but I'm surprised you included bravely default 1 and not 2, was it because the game is too new, or is it because the bastion job isn't close enough to the job because it still plays the same it has ability's to prevent the whole party from taking damage and also uses holy attacks or the Shieldmaster witch has the cover ability called bodyguard and can do status effects like blind, and they can be combined with the white mage/Spiritmaster for a paladin esqe class.
An extra bit of info for FF9, namely Save the Queen, Beatrix's signature sword: she is the only party member capable of wielding it even though it can be synthesized in the endgame far after she stops being playable. In fact, the only real purpose it can serve is having Amarant yeet it at an enemy.
Very loose correction -- Paladin doesn't just come from the Palatine hill, but from the Palatina Guard, the post-crisis of the third century equivilent of the Praetorian Guard (but before the Varangians). It literally translates to "Palace Guard", and in the Epic of Roland, essentially got mistranscribed to "Paladin". The rest is history
With regards to which Job I'd like to see covered in these retrospectives the most, I would say that would be the Thief/Ninja. The way the original game designers tried to adapt the kind of utility found in the D&D Thief/Rogue within the rigid limitations of an early JRPG is kind of fascinating, and FF really evolved its own formula for the Thief/Ninja's mechanics over the years. That's not even mentioning the FF characters which have embraced the archetype over the course of the franchise.
I feel like they'd almost want to do 2 separate ones for each, since they arguably are separate enough, but there is overlap in places, yes, not unlike Ninja and Monk (since I think in FF4 both Yang and Edge use claws, same thing Amarant uses in 9...not sure if Shadow in 6 uses claws or if they were even a weapon type there)
FFXIV Currently knows the Paladin as a stubborn job that can survive things that might normally wipe the party, with an exclusive spell called Clemency that sees its best use on other members of the party granting a heal to the target whilst also healing the user as well for 50% of the value the target was healed for, making it easier to make the most out of a desperate situation.
I'm a bit late, but there are a few things I'd like to point out. Firstly, despite the text on screen explaining the Paladin role, you understood it wrong. Chaotic acts remove your status as a Paladin, but can be restored by a claric. Evil acts, however, permanently removes your Paladin role. Secondly, Beatrix shares many similarities with a Paladin, including being a good-hearted person, but unlike Paladins, she often closed her emotions in order to commit the atrocities commanded by her Queen, Brahne. In fact, there were times when she questioned the Queen's decision to make use of the Black Mages, not because of they're destructive power, but because she could do it all herself. She was however, a prodigy in swordsmanship, so despite it not being officially stated anywhere, I believe the role of Sword Saint fits her character better. Especially if you consider the japanese names of that role and the command option she uses (Sword Saint = Kensei; Seiken = Holy Sword). As a "Just" knight, Adelbert Steiner fits the role of Paladin. Outside of all that, great video as ever.
Anyone else think that Confetior and the three level 90 finisher spells may have been inspired by the Lightbringer? That’s that high-level Paladin sword which is a long ranged weapon and can cast Holy. Could kinda fit with Confetior being the long-ranged sword attack and Blade of Valor/Truth/Faith being the equivalent of the Holy spell that’s cast afterwards.
Fun Fact about FF5: in the german translation the sorcerer job is called Paladin, however doesnt feature anything that resembles the archetype of paladins since the jobs spiel is to enchance swords, knives and shields with a specific element.
I think Gladiolus from FFXV kinda resembles Paladin? He is a royal guard that can wield greatsword and shield and has some skills to protect Noctis.. indeed he can't use holy element skills but at least he can equip greatsword with holy element

Some who follow the English dialogue actually believe that Lyna is in love with the very old man Exarch. One guesses they find that preferable.

Here is what I wrote on another FFXIV TH-cam video:
In Final Fantasy XII, the female Viera Fran - who also makes an appearance in the Ivalice alliance raid quests in Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood, because of the Yasumi Matsuno connection - is voiced in English with an Icelandic accent by Australian actress Nicole Fantl.
There are some things I could name in FF that are inconsistently localized, etc., but I'd like to see evidence with my own eyes first.
before watch the video: thank you for talking about my favorite class
Same!
Same here.
Same here! That's my favorite class
Saaaame
Cecil is my all time favorite. Thanks for this awesome video! The paladin is also my favorite class.
Same, and it’s especially why i just love for Asriel to be a party member in Deltarune and his class will be a Paladin.
I do feel samurai iaido to buff Allies is as close to cover as you can get.
.
In my country we have a cigarette brand called Cecil. U can get them as red or green 🚬🚬🚬🚬
I'm kinda surprised the Warrior of Light didn't get mentioned with Cecil in the Dissidia portion considering unlike the other versions of knight that are mentioned here, WoL double downs on the light connection.
I think some people associate him with the warrior class due to the name but I agree that he fits Paladin better.
Well that's because he wasn't originally a paladin, that was dissidia
Tbh, in my opinion if she did have an assigned class I feel she would be a paladin in the way you describe
She is technically a Time Battlemage
One (easily missed) correction about FFXIV's paladin. Though Save the Queen as a weapon from the Bozja story isn't available to PC Paladins, its model (mostly) is - it's actually a reskin of the Diamond Sword from the Omega raids (available in Omega 8 Savage or with tokens from it).
Yooooo, I didn't know that! Thanks for the tip!
The evolution videos are excellent. I am looking forward to when you do the evolution of the summoners ✨
I want them to do a video on "Enemy creatures" turned to "Espers/Summons" in future installments.
They really are. The Sage one really opened my eyes into how the developers constructed the Sage from the existing gameplay of Sage while giving it a unique space. I personally am looking forward to the Evolution of Scholars I want to see if there is a similar gameplay link there.
I love how in depth your videos are. I can't wait for the Evolution of Summoners.
You guys Missed something, while Paladin is Human exclusive in Final Fantasy tactics advance. Bangaas had a paladin variant called Templar (Temple Knight) which was more focused on acting as an anti-magic tank whit there Sacred Technique commands.
There's also Defender, for the Baangas.
@Andy Witmyer I'm sure you're correct. Locke is absolutely not a thief.
@@Jimalcoatl correct me if I'm wrong, but as I remember he was the only character in his game with the "steal" command, isn't it? That could make him the "thief" of the team, although his not called specifically that way
@Andy Witmyer best reply
It's amazing how you guys always managed to show how important a class is and how you guys go into so much information or detail about it.
I'm so glad you talked about bravely default and how paladin is apart of 2 jobs
As if anyone needed any further convincing that Cecil is the best paladin of all time in any and every example. Luckily, Daryl's soothing voice brings a lot more information. I didn't know the origins of the term, for example! I remember using a team of Paladin, Monk, Ninja, and Red Wizard in my first completed game of Final Fantasy.
Ninja or summoner would be some cool jobs to cover next!!!
I like watching your videos just because hearing a nice voice talking about statistics and things really kind of helps soothe me.
Dark Knight got fucked over
@@Zephhi Nah, drk got the highest dps of every tank and TBN is still crazy good.
Another great episode! Can't wait for the Complete History of Cid, Chocobos OR Moogles.
Well, regarding Cid...I've got good news, you just gotta dig in the channel a bit. There's actually TWO videos!
Looking forward to an Evolution video focusing on the Ninja!
Yay, you’re back! I found your channel a few weeks ago and it’s since been one of my top favorite channels on TH-cam. Great work!
while it is not my go to tank (loving Gunbreaker right now) i can not deny how good it is in FF14 now.
My favourite one though is Cecil, he just WRECKS and can take damage as well he dishes it out, sure his magic isnt that great but that is in battle, it still has use via the menu to save MP on the more powerful healer of the game, Rosa.
I always liked making my own defacto paladin in V. Bartz as a knight with lv.6 wht magic was a good combination
@@Chud_Bud_Supreme oh yeah, how could i forget my favourite single player FF Job System!!!
That can work even better when you master some jobs and use Mimic/Traveller jobs for max effectiveness and stats.
They are such a cute couple to,
Once again you do a fabulous job, chasing down so many details and really digging into the similarities and the differences between each "version" of Paladin!
Great stuff! The original idea of the paladin is of a holy warrior who draws upon the power of Christ’s holy light to serve gods will. Basically an enhanced version of the holy knights from the crusades irl. Very cool!
Fighters and Paladins have been my favorite and go-to classes in many RPGs, D&D included.
Omg finally! I’ve been waiting so long for a Paladin video. I’ve always enjoyed characters like Cecil, Beatrix, Agrias and Orlandeau
I love this series on your channel, keep up the good work guys!
I think Evolution of Warrior Job would be appreciated for the start of 2022
Thanks for all the well read content, always learning with every upload
Quick correction to your FF14 bits. Paladin has actually been consistently one of the higher damage tanks, and has also historically taken the most damage, which is weird considering the Sword and Board aesthetic.
The also didn't get reworked for Endwalker, but they are the mascot of the expansion.
What expansion was paladin ever leading in damage for tanks maybe back when there was only 2.
@@joshb3024 For the last two expansions, in content where tank DPS makes a difference, GNB and PLD have been the tanks of choice.
This video really has a lot of detail. Good work!
As someone who loves D&D and Final Fantasy this means alot to me.
Lovely video to watch on my train home! A very interesting look into the paladins!!!!! Also merry Christmas guys!!!! I hope you had a wonderful one!!!
I like how paladin and dark knight are connected to each other due to they're design and lore elements it makes both classes interesting.
I mentioned before on the White Mage video that my sister and I dressed as a White Mage and her tank for Halloween way back when. It was a very apt juxtaposition, considering she was a nurse and I was a cop. Because of that, I always tend to lean toward the cleric and knight archetype characters in most media.
I absolutely love your origin stories
Love this guys, happy to have my favorite class covered. Happy New year!
I really love your videos and would like to see complete evolutions of jobs that are also used in 14 please : D
For some reason, youtube keeps recommending your videos to me multiple times.
It's the third time I got this recommended to me.
Guess I'm watching it for a third time then! :P
"What's a Paladin?" -The Avatar, Ultima IX
Please do Machinist next! I feel like it's a bit more obscure than most of the other classic jobs
PALADINS! My favorite class! Liked before even watching! Can't wait to see it.
I would love to see you guys cover the thief class.
I love the evolution videos. I'd like to see a video about the airships, they're my favorite aspect of the franchise (specially because in my language they're called "Flying Boats" lol)
Thank you for this great video guys!! I vote for Summoner-class next!😊
I hope that snippets of these class histories will be included in the upcoming book!
I've got three I would like to see. Either Ninja, Monk, or Samurai would be great.
It's also the only Job that realistically uses shields (Black Mage and White Mage technically CAN, but there are no good 1 handed weapons for them past level 50 and thus no options to wield shields, and they have no abilities with them anyway...)
When Cross-Class skills went away in...I think it was 5.0 (Shadowbringers) but maybe it was 4.0 (Stormblood), Paladin still did have healing capability from the powerful spell Clemency, which is a strong heal and, if used on other players/party members, will also heal the Paladin for 50% of that value anyway, as well as Paladin having the Cover ability (take damage in place of an ally for 10 seconds or so), the best tank invulnerability in the game (Hallowed Ground, which makes them immune to all damage other than ultimate boss attacks/1 hit KO attacks), and has powerful defensive abilities like Passage of Arms (100% block rate and shields any party members standing behind you, reducing their damage taken to 85% of normal), Divine Veil (which gives a protection bubble to all party members when the Paladin activates it and receives a heal), and Intervention (which reduces damage a single party member takes - often used on other tanks when the Paladin is in an off tank position, but can be used on healers or the like in clutch situations).
Love this evolution of series, please keep it up!
Cecil's transformation into a Paladin is one of the most iconic moments in the Final Fantasy series.
I'm loving this series. Playing ff9 on a old ps2 and it's great to find stuff like this. I already subscribed.
Meanwhile in Ultima 9: "What's a Paladin?"
I'd love a video about the Thief class, including games with Steal abilities if the class isn't present (like FFVII and FFVIII)
Thank you for including bravely default
Surprised you didn't mention Wizardry, a game that was basically the link between D&D and Japan.
I don't remember the ninja being covered, so what about covering that class next?
I'd like to see Mystic Knight, but it's only ever been in one game :(
I don't think you've done Ninja or Dancer yet ?
I'm stoked to watch this!!
Can't wait for my favorite job's evolution: The Bard!
I think celes can be count also as a paladin because she learn some White magic on her own and can protect allies against magic
Really enjoying this series and love the channel. Gotta ask why no one on the internet knows how to pronounce ‘aegis’ though lol.
Sorry to bring up pronunciation again, but the first syllable of "seiken" is pronounced like the English word "say". "Saiken", as pronounced in this video, means "rebuilding" (among other things).
All these years playing FFXIV and maining PLD and I never noticed I had Tidus' animation.
It's good to see Bravely Default in the video!
That said, he was adopted by Baron's king.
@@LittleAl016 Yup forgot to add that bit! Still not royalty though, just adopted and conscripted to knighthood as a dark knight.
I main Paladin in ff14 so this was fun to watch, thanks!
I would like to see a video on summoner especially after the recent changes to summoner in ff14.
Please cover thief/ninja.
This means that paladins as royal guards in FFXIV is a really nice touch!
Oh my gosh! That makes so much sense! Thank you for this info. (Sorry for the late comment!)
It was inspired by Holy Knights from Tactics. It's literally just Holy Sword skills with different names lol.
something to point out is that Celes has Save The Queen as an ultimate weapon and knight’s honor relic gives the cover ability
You posted the Bozja relic weapon and not Excalibur when glossing over the ff14 section.
One of my favorite jobs in the series.
Paladins should be in more Main Final Fantasy games in my opinion.
This should have been "The Complete Evolution of Paladins and Knights"
Can't wait to see the complete evolution of chocobo
A ninja evolution would be awesome!
reminds me of paladin on Ragnarok Online with redemption to take damage for his party while knight was more bruiser directioned.
