" this enabled the samurai to start using guns, An unexpected choice" As a history nerd I can tell you it is FAR from unexpected, the samurai historically LOVED firearms when they started cropping up around Japan and were swiftly adopted as their primary weapon during many wars in Feudal Japan
Another fun fact if anyone is interested, in Tactic, the fact the Samurai job require the Dragoon job is also linked to history. Historicaly, Samurai mainly used spears as a weapon. The katana was way too precious, both in money and what it represented (the soul of the warrior) to risk in most battles. They were especialy used in duels since they puted everything on the line.
Can we agree that Auron is probably the most badass final fantasy character? He had swag and was extremely well writen and op specially when he joins your party.
As much as I love the suave pirate, he's got nothing on how badass Auron is. He fought Yunalesca on two different occasions, somehow ended up in the dream version of Zanarkand, could actually communicate with Sin to some degree, and somehow managed to jump to a different franchise to piss off the god of the underworld. Death was merely an inconvenience to Auron. Even Batman would be impressed by Auron's abilities and dedication.
It’s worth noting that the FF15 quest “A Fist Full of Gil” is a reference to “A Fist Full of Dollars” which is a Spaghetti Western reimagining of Kurosawa’s “Yojimbo” - fun stuff!
I love these evolution videos so much; I especially love how you tie the jobs to characters that aren't "explicitly" that job. A lot of the time it's pretty obvious (like, they outright call Lulu a black mage for example) but occasionally I get to see a connection I hadn't made myself. I really value the minutiae you go out of your way to highlight with your "usual granular style" lol.
The Gil toss ability is most likely a reference to the character Heiji Zenigata; a Japanese policeman who wielded a jitte club and threw coins at criminals as he chased them down. In FFVI, the relic that unlocks the Gil toss attack for Setzer is even named Heiji’s Jitte. And for fans of Lupin III, yes, the character Heiji Zenigata inspired Lupin’s eternal rival, Koichi Zenigata.
Which also somehow inspired the Goemon games to have him throw coins. Even the first game involves that, though probably because Goemon is kind of a Japanese Robin Hood, as I recall
SAM was an absolute monster in FFXI. Meditate and ridiculous amounts of stacked Store TP were nasty. Especially early on when Soboro Sukehiro was a viable weapon.
Missed the Parivir from Tactics A2. Different name but definitely a samurai. It uses flair skills that did heavy damage with a chance for status effect. Also notable, it could kill itself to fully heal living allies.
I just want to mention that in Stranger of Paradise that the Samurai even has 2 variants, being Yojimbo and Genji, with Yojimbo being an obvious reference to the summon and Genji being a recurring armor set in past FFs. Also a Samurai using a gun isn't so surprising looking at history, and to me is a perfectly fine addition to their arsenal, even going as far to say I hope that in future games if they allow more customization to allow this to be a weapon they can use.
I love this content so much we're v lucky to have u. I do my own homebrew tabletop final fantasy and I use your video essays for inspiration on the custom character classes I've built from the ground up. Particularly proud of my eastern class section and even more particular still the Geisha, an androgenous class that's a mix of Gambler/Samurai/Bard/Dancer/Festival Goer add a pinch of scaling Sneak Attack dice, and some poison use and you're set. (Also this class allows male Geisha to equip Female only gear if I ever decide to actually make any.)
Samurai using guns makes so much sense too! When you start reading on the Samurai culture a bit, you quickly realize that the katana was more a symbol of status, and a last option is battle. Spears and long bow (eventually replaced by muskets after they were introduced by the Portuguese in Japan) were the weapons of choice of a Samurai warrior. Guess Team Ninja did get some influence from the Koei side when it comes to historical accuracy 😂
Master Musosai, the mentor of the Samurai Job Quests, is the FFXIV characters I respect the most. He taught me my main job and his sense of justice is botomless. "Such evil cannot be suffered."
Something I'd say should be noted that while they don't have any direct ice spells as such, FF14 Samurai have some ice based attacks in their arsenal and general are something of magic user though one that "casts" using melee strikes rather then direct spell casting, this even effects the design of some characters (which I won't say due to spoilers). Also while more commonly associated with the sword, the design of the Samurai armor is in fact that way to make it easier to use bows and later also guns which the Samurai of history did use quite often.
FWIW, Inagaki's Miyamoto Musashi trilogy isn't called "the Samurai Trilogy" in Japan, and I'd have to rewatch it to confirm whether the word "samurai" is used more less often in the films than "bushi". I'd say it's pretty certain that in Japan that word is more associated with Kurosawa Akira and his ōbeijin fans. It should also probably be clarified that there's a difference between "samurai history and culture" and "the novels of Yoshikawa Eiji".
I really enjoyed this. Being an Iaido practitioner, I appreciate the amount of detail you into the video. Other than the fact I would cringe a little whenever you mispronounced Iaido incorrectly (its E I dou), this is excellent. Dont feel mad, every time I would mispronounce it in class, my sensei would make me go do suburi on the other side of the dojo. 😂 Also the SOLDIER unit in FFVII is deeply based off of samurai as well. You mentioned Cloud and Sephiroth being based off of Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro respectively, but it goes further. Cloud's original design was changed because the designers felt it wasnt enough of a contrast between him and Sephiroth. This original design would go on to become Angeal Hewley. Which is why the Buster Sword (which was based off the boat oar Musashi defeated Kojiro with) originates from him. Also Angeal plays the older mentor to SOLDIER members who would pass on his teachings to Zack, who would pass them on to Cloud. SOLDIER is also considered a higher class of warrior. Being what ashigaru (foot soldiers) strive for. Which Sephiroth represents for Angeal, Genesis and Cloud.
I'm currently playing through Stormblood, and though I'm a Dragoon main for the most part I'm now using Samurai for the story quests (and loving all the references to Doma in FF6, my favorite game of the series).
You forgot to mention yojinbo's optional boss fight in X2, it was my favorite fight in the game, my first thought was "oh cool, yojinbo," quickly followed by "oh crap, yojinbo!"
I miss my stats in Stormblood and Shadowbringer T.T I made myself into a walking one man army, would sub tank and still deal highest dps before the nerf nation attacked
A more real Yojimbo does show up as a boss in Kugane Castle in 14. The boss mechanic is based around collecting the gil thrown on the ground before his dog can.
Calling it a "more real Yojimbo" feels a little disingenuous considering during the Hildibrand questline for Stormblood reveals it's just Gilgamesh under a new identity and nearly starving to death
I really should finish levelling Samurai in XIV, its p fun to play in pvp! Also not to dragoon main on main but a moment of silence for our eye tether at 32:27 U_U
It is worth noting that while we don't currently have the FULL story of how Sephiroth obtained the Masamune yet, the current arc we're going through in FF7 Ever Crisis The First Soldier is the story of how he obtained the Masamune.
definitely FFXI. skillfully manipulating your excessive TP to deliver skillchains and assisting the party to perform successive skillchains is it's own brand of entertainment. Just the other day I was farming exemplar points with friends from a new Linkshell, we were in King Ranperre's Tomb, and without a guide we figured out a devastating combo and starting pulling it off every chance we got. At first we were trying a Bard using Sword's Savage Blade, into Samurai's Fudo, into a Warrior's Upheaval, but that only made Skillchain: Fusion; but then I was like, hey I can use Fusion by using Shoha and turning it into Light; the warrior used Upheaval again (i think) and bam, we were doing Radiance skillchains for like 98k damage and dropping these Apex mobs HP by half every time, it was so awesome.
Samurai will always be my favorite job in FF series along with Dark Knight. They have super strenght, super speed and art of immortality. "You get there with experience" Btw in VII Cloud is a samurai as he have Yoshiyuki and Murasame and with introduction of young Angeal in Ever Crisis it also count too. In IX Steiner has a skill called Iai strike which is one of samurai habilities where you can insta kill but its 30% rate making it a zantetsuken version of samurai. You forgor type 0 where Jack is also a samurai too
Hard to say who the "true" stand out samurai is, but Auron definitely takes it for me. Everything about his design is just made with the pure intention of being a bad ass while also being the one guy who never oversteps since he is playing the role of being the team's father figure (while not tell anyone what they should do). Honestly not only my favorite Samurai but also my favorite character out of FFX.
fun stuff, those arent 'horns' on the helmet, its a crest for identification and could be anything like the ff5 moon crest, and often if a blade is held cutting edge down its a tachi, i imagine the reason the female fft samurai isnt wielding a spear (onna bugeisha) is the prior existence of dragoon
I’ve always like how ff12 and tactics made samurai’s. Warriors high in physical and magic damage, even though they didn’t cast magic directly, they had high magic stats with there weapons and gear. To me the magic was to symbolize their wisdom, being older, wise warriors.
For FFXIV portion: While you mentioned that Hien’s father, Kaien, is the Japanese rendering of Cyan’s name from FF6, Hien’s childhood name, you learn, is Shun. Shun, and his mother Mina in Japanese FF6 is rendered as Owain and Elayne Garamond in the English version, Cyan’s tragically deceased son and wife. EDIT: Also sort-of but not quite example, the FF13 Mark Mission 51 target Attacus (Spartacus in Japan) is a monstrous Cie’th being who wielded a single blade. It is notoriously tough and nigh invulnerable to Stagger, which has been hitherto the main avenue of dealing damage in the game up to that point. What is more, the blade Attacus wielded is a long, thin, curved blade reminiscent of a katana, which then gets broken as the fight progresses and it pulls another blade from its stomach. The second sword is a broader, machete-like sword, while its third sword is highly reminiscent of the Seven-Branched Sword. I think it’s a very compelling list of things that would make it qualify even though it’s not a Final Fantasy Job per se.
Obviously he's more removed from the samurai class, but some of the discussion was making me think about Vincent Valentine as well, especially his similarities with Auron (older "wiser" man in red with his face mostly covered who's experienced loss and trauma?). Granted, just about any discussion makes me think about Vincent Valentine xD
Sure you may have known, but samurais did have guns thanks to the Portuguese starting from the 1500s. They were called tanegashima, which were two handed bayonets. This is why Jack could use the two handed guns in SoP.
On the whole, FF15 combat is pretty simple and easy, but there are some enemies that can quickly wipe you out if you're not paying attention. Ronin and Yojimbo can certainly do that. Be very wary if you come across them in a dark, shadowy dungeon
Loved the video but I'm surprised you decided to leave out ffta2's parivir! They were called yojimbo in japanese/spanish and were very clearly samurai-inspired. Great video anyways because Cyan is the best.
I think the Parivir from FF Tactics A2 should have been included, it's a very samurai-themed class with similar abilities. (also, overpowered: its elemental attacks deal double damage for no cost!!)
Probably because they follow the FFWiki listing on their Samurai page, since it's Japanese name is Yojimbo. However, its command being known as Ougi (the same as FFX-2 Samurai command) and has access to Wind Slash, Iai, and Mineuchi. The job clearly is referencing the Samurai of other games. So they really made this a bit incomplete. They also forgot Parai from FFD2, who is literally inspired by the ronin, comes from East, and was remodeled to have Samurai skills in the premium release. >_>
Actually it's implied throughout the story and extra media that the Auron that appears in Kingdom Hearts 2 is the genuine article from Final Fantasy X. That's right the Original Auron might have actually appeared in a Kingdom Hearts game.
Just think, Auron fought against two incarnations of Sin. Each being capable of ending the world. And Auron won both times. Hades really should have done his homework before trying to control a man that treated his own death as a minor inconvenience.
Someone be a hero and timestamp FFT Elmdore (not wssting 45 mins if they forgot that boss which only loses because Orlandeau goes first and bypasses everything). That blasted iaido with master teleportation and shirahadori (dodge basic physical atks) was cruel (but a good tutorial on how to make a good generic with arcane strength).15:20 nope 😢
When it comes to choosing a class/job, the Samurai has never really appealed to me despite how powerful it has been in the MMOs, but Auron is quite possibly my favorite character in the entire series, easily the best samurai, though I love Gilgamesh as well.
" this enabled the samurai to start using guns, An unexpected choice"

@@rebaxbayushi577 Yeah, and it seems only 11's Samurai have had polearms and bows.
Far from unexpected, you mean?
Nobunaga Oda and Magoichi SAika come to mind, though that's my Samurai Warriors past and showing my age a bit
I guarantee you, weebs would foam at the mouth if you told them that 😂

He is right there fighting Yunalesca again on pure will. FF X is great.
@@Moveset-Mastery not even death can stop him!
@@Mark_GL damn yes, the Yunaleska fight was something else
I think Balthier is more badass personally

I’m at 20 out of 21 FF platinums. I got no where else to talk about this lol.
Editor: congrats buddy, there are some really tough platinums in that list of games.
You didn't tell us which you don't have.....
Which one are you missing? Is it 9 because of that gawd awful jump rope game?
Hell yeah bro!
You got my respect, i hope its real 😅
Is the last one left the rope jump in IX?
I always liked giving Cyan the Genji Glove and The Offering and then just letting him go wild with 2 swords.
I love these long videos, and the evolution videos. Great for waiting on the mechanic to finish working on my car.
I love these evolution videos so much; I especially love how you tie the jobs to characters that aren't "explicitly" that job. I LOVE watching your videos. Phenomenal work.
My favorite video series on the channel. Thanks!
Has a katana, but deals the most damage by throwing money. Love to see it
As we all know, capitalism is the most harmful thing to the everyday person

My favourite Samaurai is Noillurie from FFXI. Seeing her unit during Campaign battles and her tanking the unit bosses gave me the warm and fuzzies.

I can’t tell you how excited I am for this video lol. I love this series and I think this is the first new video since I started watching
You like samurai because of 2 things:
You had tons of Gil
Yojimbo
No no two words. Blade grasp.
While Yojimbo is the most sigma grindset Aeon (Fuck Sin up, get paid), he's the second best samurai in that game.

Considering how he worked for the Shinra Corporation for a long time, one could call Sephiroth a Corporate Samurai
33:55 notably, Hien’s childhood name was “Shun”: the name of Cyan’s son in the Japanese script of Ff6
also lord kaien/cyan, and i believe mina is mentioned too

It's sad that 8 and 9 didn't really have any Samurai, but 9 did give a solid Monk/Ninja hybrid, plus a great Dragoon, even massive expansion for Thief
Samurai is one of my favorite jobs in FFXIV. Top 5 for sure
Samurais have a short story compared to other classes but I love how consistently badass they are. Auron being my favorite of course.
So nice to see a job class inspired by real life instead of fantasy, like the knight.
Cyan is my favorite character in FFVI. He's not very powerful but he's perfect as a character.

War of the Visions has a ton of issues, but damn, do I love those character designs
I swear theres something special about square enix particle effects
Oh man I've been waiting for this video. Samurais are badass, especially ✝️ samurais in Japan.
Samurai should use more bows in RPGs including FF. As historically they used bows as a main weapon.
Stranger of paradise came out in 2022 not 2012 42:57
Actually it's implied throughout the story and extra media that the Auron that appears in Kingdom Hearts 2 is the genuine article from Final Fantasy X.
@paulhiggins6433 so freaking true!
Missed FFTA2's Paravir job. It's very much a samurai.
I'd like a game where the main protagonist is a samurai.
You forgot Jack from Type-0
I think the Female Samurai in FFT might have their designs influenced by popular depictions of the Shinsengumi.
"Almost instantaneously" lol
When it comes to choosing a class/job, the Samurai has never really appealed to me despite how powerful it has been in the MMOs, but Auron is quite possibly my favorite character in the entire series, easily the best samurai, though I love Gilgamesh as well.
