I love George Lynch, a lot. He's one of my favorites. But come on, people, let's get real here. George did NOT want to be in Dokken at the time of this tour and Reb was hired to do a job. Although they are distinctly different players, but share a sense of style that is unique to them. He was not a Lynch clone, but this was some downright ferocious guitar playing. You can't deny Reb's talent. Respect.

Agree. The aggravating thing with George is not wanting to duplicate their recordings live. Btw, in no way am I suggesting Reb could be George. He's simply a great player that will at least commit to trying to hold true the recognized solos...

Biggest Lynch fan but totally respect Reb. Whats weird about Lynch is he nails certain solos and others he's way off. I'm not necessarily saying he was performing a horrible solo live, more like ad libbing.

Thanks for acknowledging that it was George who didn't want to be in Dokken. If you know the whole story it's impossible not to take Don's side in the feud. George is (was?) a phenomenal guitarist but he is a toxic human being. The fact that Jeff and Mick sometimes back up George's side doesn't mean a thing. Breaking the Chains was a solo album and none of the other members liked the fact that Don could make music 90% as good without them. He proved this irrefutably on Up from the Ashes and in many live performances.

    • @kingofdragontown9680
      @kingofdragontown9680 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Actually he was fired, because he couldn't get along with Don and lost a lawsuit against Don, Jeff, and Mick.

From a technical standpoint Reb crushed Lynches solo's, period.
His tap style is so impressive, his triplets n quads crush most other players because of his right hand technique.
Of course he's not going to play Lynch's solo's with the same feel as the creator of those solo's, but the sad fact is he destroy's them technically.
And I love that interview and what he says about Kirk Hammett, so true.
This guy is so completely underrated it's tragic.

If you haven't heard the "Erase the Slate" album, you owe it to yourself to hear it. Reb is astonishing on the album. I'll give you that Lynch isn't as good as he used to be, not sure why, but life has a way of kicking us in the nuts.. Both Reb, and Lynch are truly outstanding players, but in reality only one is the innovator.. Here's a clip of Lynch in his prime.. He already got so much undeserved hate for Winger, live him alone, he's an amazing guitarist. George is one of my favorite guitarists, but he's hit or miss, sometimes he sounded crappy live, he's messy. I think Reb is better live. He's more focused and tight. They're just different.

His studio performances are not messy. They are anything but messy. Live performances, you get guys who may be high or something else. The venues are often enormous open spaces with poor acoustics.
And George seemed to play with way more effects in live situations. Too much. That muddles the sound and kills a lot of clarity.
There is footage of him playing in a studio with the sound mixer in there with him. It is phenomenal playing and is not messy.

Okay, let me sum it up for all of you. No one is ever going to sound like Lynch, period. He has his own unique style, and that's what sets him apart from other guitarists. He was my biggest influence growing up. That being said, Reb does an excellent job filling in and is one of the most talented guitarists around. The ones who slam Reb are obviously clueless and need to have their hearing checked. I think we can all agree that both players are phenomenal in their own right.

It's similar to when Vivian Campbell was back playing those solos from the first few Dio albums in recent years after towing the line in Def Lep, but at the same different in that Campbell wrote those Dio solos. Still though, as @chefgaryklein7551 put it below: "he does justice to the Lynch solos with his own style, it’s killer...". Like a wild animal out of the cage and unleashed upon the audience, he shreds. I come back here (or he algorithm brings me back) every few months once my face has healed; my face just melted off again. Okay, I'm all out of guitar shredder cliches...see you in a few months.

I used to think Reb was overrated but now I realize he's not only a very talented player, but live he's more consistent and more technical than George. Maybe that's because George doesn't have any formal training? Could be, because my lack of much training leads to inconsistent lead playing too.

George is a VERY unique player to emulate. Rob on the other hand is such a monster himself he gets the point across with confidence. he keeps crucial parts of the soloing as they should be to make sense and then he explodes in is own right to metal the faces...A superb player!!!!!

Yes, Reb is a great performer. I saw him with Whitesnake in 2015. I've seen George live as well. To me just different a approach to them live. As you know studio recording is a lot different than live, it's almost impossible to match it note for note. I've been playing guitar for 60 years and I never play a solo the same, especially if it's difficult to reproduce live. I love both of them, but for me, being a huge Lynch fan, I've got to go with him.

Dude, Just had to comment, even though this is an older post. I saw this tour live (St. Louis), and this show you have posted, is available on DVD. It is phenomenal. Pick it up if you don’t own it. Prepare to be amazed.
Poster is spot on. I love George Lynch. One of the greats.
But give credit where credit is due.
    Reb Beach absolutely shreds!
If you don’t like Winger because you thought it was uncool, well I guess you never really listened to it. Red Beach is a mega talent.
Back about 1989, I had the pleasure of seeing a triple bill with Tangier, Extreme, and Winger. Nuno and Reb sharing the same stage...mind blowing.
Another incredible guitarist that got passed over because of the band he was in...Vito Bratta. If you’re not familiar with his solos from White Lion...damn, you’re in for a treat. Nobody, and I mean nobody, plays like this guy.

He doesn't phrase over the bar line like Lynch does. That was always my favorite thing about George's playing.

The only Dokken live show I'll ever return to. At least Reb played a recognizable version of the song live and sounds great...everybody on fire here. Any live recordings I've ever seen from the classic four just haven't stacked up...almost tragically bad somehow.

Dokken was a force with Reb. The band was as tight as they ever were. Luckily we have this DVD cuz things are way different since Reb left.

George is a really cool dude. Humble as they come. He OPENED for my band a couple years ago for SXSW. I expected a pompous attitude and a huge ego. I was totally wrong. He stood their eating tacos while we played. Liked us as much as we liked his band.

Reb sounds great! He recreated George's solos. It still sounded like Dokken. Jeff's more aggressive slightly overdriven live tone works well here too.

Wow!! I can’t believe all of the whining about who is the better guitarist playing these solos. Do you realize that at the time this video was shot, George Lynch did not want to be a part of Dokken? Reb Beach did us all a favor by stepping into Lynch’s shoes so that we could still enjoy hearing these songs live. It’s obvious that both guys are monster guitar players and are better than 99.9% of the people leaving comments here. As a huge Dokken and Lynch fan myself, I actually prefer listening to Reb’s version. It’s a fresh take on songs that are 30 years old. Enjoy them both and Instead of spending time whining about who’s better, pick up your guitar and play along with both versions. That is All

I like the Reb Beach signature guitar (Ibanez maybe?..),...had an odd cut out behind the Floyd. Cool af,...and unique.

Yes, it was made by Ibanez. It was called the RBM or Voyager with different model numbers. I own the RBM 10 with upgraded components. Very nice guitars indeed.
