It is pretty funny that Skype was THE name in video calls for like 15 years, but they were so complacent that they never added any features, and then a no-name company took their entire market share in one year because it actually supported a reasonable number of people on a call.
I have to *completely* disagree with you, it's not that they didn't add features, it's that they constantly added idiotic features while neglecting core functionality. I could ignore the fact that Skype went from being a slim and useful tool to being a bloated mess with xbox integration and a ton of other crap I never wanted to have to deal with, but the fact they ended up with like six different barely working versions by 2014 should have been a wakeup call. I spent two hours trying to help my mother set up skype on her idiotic windows 8 machine only to have it keep freaking out because of some microphone setting somewhere in Internet explorer, and having it fight me every step of the way when I tried to get the desktop version on to her computer. So no, the problem isn't that they didn't add features it's that they broke the basics of calling people, shoehorned in a bunch of crap that just got in the way and bloated the program, then they made their versions fight each other. Final straw was when they screwed over the mobile version to try to make a snapchat clone by removing the last useful feature of being able to see whether or not the three people on your contact list you still talk to were actually online or not.
From what I read, it looks like after Microsoft bought skype, they did try and add things but the actual code and framework was hanging on by a thread. Not to mention that one time where I wanted to get on a call and got a 30 second unskippable video ad with absolutely ear raping audio about some shit I couldn't care less about. Every time I used skype I asked myself "why isn't anyone making a better version of this? they would absolutely blow skype out of orbit"
GoFundMe becoming a backbone of the US healthcare system wasn’t exactly their fault either. And there was the Tide sequel about Trump telling people to consume bleach
@@mrkiky critically, once upon a time Skype was fucking amazing. It was free international video calling when that was still a revolutionary new idea. But they failed to keep up with the times, and bigger companies entered the market that could burn endless money on infrastructure. Also Skype failed to secure enterprise contracts. Zoom really succeeded because they vendor-locked tons of medium size businesses and were well positioned to reap the profits, Skype spent time chasing lay-consumer buy in.
to be honest, skype lost its popularity long before the pandemic. so when the need for conference calls rise with the pandemic people weren't looking to go back. zoom was used by google and worked with its apps so it was easy for many companies to use it. and so it rose in popularity and since everyone was using zoom it became the go to.
I absolutely hate Zoom. The interface is clunky and feels like a 90s AOL videocall. Im assuming that AOL had videoconferencing software and that it was as clunky as humanly possible like all the rest of their software
This was hilarious. But, we stopped using Skype a long time ago, when Microsoft bought them, forced all accounts to be transferred to microsoft accounts, started showing ads in the chat rooms and fubar'd the audio codecs so it sounded like we were on walkie-talkies. But we don't use zoom, we use discord :P
I stopped after they dropped support for their original Linux native client. The new Linux client is just a thin wrapper around the Skype Web interface and it sucks.
I gotta hand it to Microsoft, it's a really impressive feat to bring a company from a household verb status to almost nothing, while somehow still being profitable.
To be fair, that's not dependent on Skype as much as on your internet connection. It'll still happen in Zoom if the other party has 250 bytes/second connection.
I'm not sure if Brennan is doing this on purpose or not, but the twitching eye really helps sell the fact that this character is absolutely losing his shit 😂
I love when he screams "I will have my revenge" the mic peaks and they have to completely tune down the volume to prevent Brennan from decimating the audience's eardrums
The funniest part is that I stopped using Skype LONG after everyone else did. By the time I switched to other platforms, the Skype application was so infuriatingly, irreversibly broken, that I *literally had no other choice but to use something else.*
The way Brennan can create a mental breakdown and existential crisis for a character and make them feel so genuine and in the moment is just *chefs kiss*
I just realized that, until this moment, I had completely forgotten about Skype. All during the pandemic as Zoom was everywhere, at no point did I wonder "Why don't they just use Skype?" I better stop now. Brennan's probably coming for me.
In case anyone was wondering what actually happened to make Skype decline: Skype went to shit when they started forcing ads into the service in the early/mid 2010s. The ads never unloaded and instead just kept stacking the data, causing massive bloating and crashing computers when it became too much to handle. People had to consciously close and restart Skype every so often just to keep their computers running, and if they put their computer into sleep mode without closing Skype and it decided to wake up an update, it was crashing and interrupting the update, preventing the work that needed to be done the next day as the update went "happening now, eat shit." It was irredeemably fucked up and drove people away to other services that weren't causing their computers to overheat from obtrusive unwanted ads that didn't used to be there. If I remember right, this happened when Microsoft bought Skype. So yes, Microsoft killed Skype, full stop.
I stopped using Skype because some random person I Skyped with because of a video game got their account hacked and would then spam add me to thousands of group chats every day, and Skype had no way to prevent that.

Maybe if you had a Nintendo console. I only used Skype for talking to RL friends and business. Teamspeak ruled PC gaming. And Xbox and PS never needed any outside app.
Zoom was chosen by a bunch of old or middle-aged people on some board somewhere, not realizing what a hot mess of security issues it was, and then it spread from there.
Skype is, and always has been, completely worthless. It has *never* worked properly. Riddled with bugs, glitches, random problems. It was an all-round piece of shit software
Because Skype sucks big sweaty balls. Zoom works on awful connections, as the only service to so. Internet connection disrupted? Reconnect directly afterwards, you don't have to even click a button for that.
I have been in a webex call with about 40 people. at any point there were people having side convos off mute, peoples babies or dogs, and people eating. The host mutes everyone, and they unmute themselves right back. Too many people are self centered assholes, incompetent, or just unaware to have large online meetings
For people who pretty much grew up using skype and later discord, you can probably have a call with 50+ people without going insane. Downsides? 50 people = 1 guy talks, everyone else shuts up, there's no point in speaking since 50 people with their own opinions is just ridiculous, not to mention 100 or 1000. For boomers and weird people? God damn, they're just as bad as we were as kids on skype. 10 people is literally the limit of sanity for anything longer than 15 minutes. Dummies who can't figure out how to mute their mic? Dummies with 3$ mics? Dummies with pets, kids, people, lawn mowers, vacuum cleaners or dishes being done in the background that are at least as loud as themselves? When all those 3 and more things come into play at once, you'd rather listen to someone scraping their nails on a chalkboard for 3 hours.
Like I know I didn't just leave Skype at the finish line, I left it for Discord at one of the water stops, roughly back when Skype group chats had no permission required auto invites, and I could control which Discord server I joined.
I'm pretty sure Microsoft locked me out of my Skype account just before covid lol, I even have the correct password but they still won't let me in 😂 they really screwed themselves

to be honest, skype lost its popularity long before the pandemic. so when the need for conference calls rise with the pandemic people weren't looking to go back. zoom was used by google and worked with its apps so it was easy for many companies to use it. and so it rose in popularity and since everyone was using zoom it became the go to.

In case anyone was wondering what actually happened to make Skype decline:
Skype went to shit when they started forcing ads into the service in the early/mid 2010s.
Yes and people were already using facetime, whatsapp and messenger for video call
I stopped using Skype because some random person I Skyped with because of a video game got their account hacked and would then spam add me to thousands of group chats every day, and Skype had no way to prevent that.
They also haven't made any real improvements to the program in like fifteen years
Zoom has also positioned itself as the video messaging tool for a lot of schools and businesses. That’s only reason I knew what Zoom was.
@@ryanhealy9026 My cousin was/is a WFH worker long before the pandemic, and she was using Zoom at her business for their video conference calls because Zoom could support 20 callers. Skype, FB Messenger, Facetime etc couldn't.

it was so laggy and irritating on the windows desktop
its fall was inevitable
Microsoft will always fail us
because it's not actually that good, the market had just stagnated to the point where people settled for it
Skype is, and always has been, completely worthless.
As soon as he said "Don't you f*cking look at me" I knew Brennan was gonna kill it.
He's actually right about the thousand callers part, after being in a call with 30 people i wanted to blow my brains out it was so incomprehensible.
I have been in a webex call with about 40 people. at any point there were people having side convos off mute, peoples babies or dogs, and people eating.
The host mutes everyone, and they unmute themselves right back. Too many people are self centered assholes, incompetent, or just unaware to have large online meetings
Discord has worse. Idk how tf some people even have relationships over these 1000 person servers.
Well it’s mostly for a bunch of people wanting to listen to one or two people lecture or give a speech, or a singer that I like did a Q&A over zoom
Still remains the only option for university classes though. And we're talking about up to 100 people minimum for a class.
This was all of the stages of grief, I just realized
The way he says “zOoM” again and again is fucking hilarious
The most ironic thing about how I discovered this video was it was sent on a Discord Server
