Netflix screwed the pooch on this one. George RR Martin said it best. “No matter how major a writer it is, no matter how great the book, there always seems to be someone on hand who thinks he can do better, eager to take the story and "improve" on it. "The book is the book, the film is the film," they will tell you, as if they were saying something profound. Then they make the story their own. They never make it better, though. Nine hundred ninety-nine times out of a thousand, they make it worse.”
I mean...if Martin couldn't stand people ruining his work, you would think at least he could have finished it. There are a lot of reasons adaptations have to change things when switching media. That's why they're called "adaptations" and not carbon copies.
I love Bridgerton and am all for their bending of the storylines but I cannot condone this. Francesca and Michael are one of my favourite stories. Bending a storyline is one thing but a full replacement of a character is unacceptable. The character is what sells a story, so if you change a character completely the audience will never believe whatever story you are trying to sell them. Also being realistic, in what world in regency Britain would Michaela and Francesca work. They can't get married and would be shunned from society or even arrested as being gay was illegal back then. The show even makes a point of making the audience aware in Season 1 with Mr Granville and Lord Wetherby that they risk their lives every day for love. The Bridgerton family are supposed to be a closely knit one and they would even be forced to push Francesca out. When John dies, Michaela can't inherit his estate and if the writers make it so that she does, not only would that not be allowed back then but it would more importantly completely invalidate the Featherington storyline. I don't see how this storyline would work. We have Brimsley and Reynolds, Mr Granville and Lord Wetherby and perhaps my favourite one..... Benedict's bi-sexuality. I'm all for a gay story, especially as I am gay myself, but I am not for insulting the author by throwing out my favourite book entirely. If the show runners want to introduce more lgbtq+ into the show then fine but it would only work by introducing new characters, not by completely changing an existing loved character. In the book Francesca is not gay. And the gay community deserve so much better than to have a forced replacement for the sake of inclusivity .. and the straight community deserve so much more than to have their favourite character thrown out
i agree...gender is fundamental to any person as well as a fictional character. Nothing against queer romance, but I cant find the soul of Michael stirling in this new storyline, hence it would not be possible for me to watch Francesca's story having read the book.
Agree. Why destroy a perfectly good story is beyond me. So disappointed with the change. Your reasoning is spot on. I wonder what the author think of the many changes to the story. I was even teary at the end of the original book when Fancesca handed her baby to Violet after all he struggles to conceive. A very happy ending. And I can relate since I have gone through the process and now have a beautiful daughter.
Honestly I’m annoyed one because this wasn’t done to be inclusive in anyway shape or form but rather done because Jess Brownell decided she wanted to see herself in Fran after reading her book secondly this was a perfect opportunity to do a story where infertility would be a focal point something that hardly ever happens and is always overlooked and a topic that resonates with a lot of us out there
And she lost a baby, which I went through so I really resonate with Francesca's storyline and her wanting to be a mother so badly. This is devastating.
@@hellcat19832 I know I’ve found out not long ago that I will likely struggle to conceive in the future and I just personally believe this was a wasted and missed opportunity to bring awareness to such an important issue for many women but I guess that’s what can be expected with today’s society
@@hellcat19832 I don't want to see a story about infertility in this show. Bridgerton is escapist for me. I don't want to see poverty, I don't want to see Suffragettes etc hence why Eloise irritates me. Her elite Feminism has no place here
@@suzygirl1843 This is not the original personality of Elois in the book. Her story is completely twisted, even though I liked hers the best of all the books. I lost interest in Bridgerton. I am very disappointed.
Francesca's infertility story was powerful and impactful and would've lasted past her season. In the books all the other Bridgerton's within a year of marriage either had kid or were expecting one, it took Fran two years to get pregnant and it only lasted two months before the miscarriage. But the real powerful moment came in the second epilogue where Francesca finally aired out her frustrations and fears and afterwards she states how freeing it was to get that off her chest and to finally talk about it in the open. Women didn't talk about miscarriages during the regency era, heck it's still a sensitive topic today. This arc could've been very inspiration and informative but no they decided to toss it aside.
They have utterly assassinated Book Francesca in 1 minute while disrespecting John. The fiercely loyal girl who loved her husband to death and only ever saw her husband's cousin as nothing but a good friend until years after her husband's death suddenly became this floozy who falls for her husband's cousin a few days after her wedding for *shock value*. I do not give a rat's ass if Michaela is man or woman but taking the essence of Francesca's story and flipping it to make the usual "oh I married this person thinking im in love but now I'm struck by the gay and trapped in this loveless marriage whatever can i do?" Is insane. Literally destroyed a beautiful love story between two characters that showed love isnt just fireworks sometimes its just calm and drama free .But I guess in Bridgerton land the only love that's valid is where they rip off each others clothes and fall off horses . Just praying they dont make poor john become the obstacle that is stopping lesbian true love cause he married a woman he loves and believed she loves him. This is not my Francesca btw.
absolutely. she loved John beyond the grave. She went to his grave to ask permission to love Michael ffs. also, Francesca looks like a silly, awkward girl in the series. Absolutely not how she is being portrayed in the book
Totally forgot about that, but yes, so true, the fact that almost the entire book plot would have to change is a total dishonour. But tbh I totally saw something like this coming. Let's just hope that Michaela has a twin brother called Michael😅
I think she can still love her husband dearly while still being confused about her sexuality. Her maybe platonic relationship with John isn't less beautiful because of it, one doesn't take away from the other
I can’t either this plot line. I’m all for inclusion but write some original characters, stop assasinating OG characters for the sake of pandering! This plot completely made Francesca look completely fickle in her live for John who she absolutely adored and takes years of mourning to get over him. She would never just fall for his cousin only a few days after their wedding making it look like she made a mistake marrying him. And Michaela can’t replace Michael because she can’t inherit the title after John’s death which is what creates the friction from Michael’s perspective when it comes to going after Francesca. Because he has already inherited everything that was John’s he feels guilty and thinks. Marrying Frannie would be the final betrayal to John’s memory whom he also loved dearly. They were more brothers than cousins. This whole thing sent me and I won’t be watching that season, which makes me so sad because I have loved this series up to this point
@@romalibra_booksyes it does, her love of John isn’t platonic! They have a very healthy and passion filled love of their own. Her story shows that’s it possible to find a second great love and that your heart can carry that on and still find happiness again. They ripped the heart right out of her story
As a big fan of the books I am soo upset. Fran’s book made me cry so many times her struggles she desperately wanted to have children that’s the reason why she went back to the ton to find a husband. And in the end she does have a child. I love to see how they are going to make on happen now.
I'm sure they'll portray her infertility problems in other seasons. The book didn't focus on John at all but the tv show will portray their platonic love story and their infertility issues so I think it's a great way to have everything + book Michael is so manipulative with Francesca, I'm not mad we won't have that
@@romalibra_booksthey don’t have a platonic love story! Stop trying to change the way the book was written to fit this dumb narrative that makes zero sense especially in this era where people could literally be put to death for being gay. They will never be able to have an out and proud relationship
I always disliked her story I must have a big family I like the way they made her love her music and she's a little more timid now this is the story I like. Also didn't like Eloise story she was so against having a fam then just marries a guy cause she liked how they wrote. I always thought her story should have been like she the man pretending to be her brother then finding her love.
To this I agree, Julia Quinn is the one who cheated her readers. The whole book is about her wanting a baby, because she really doesn’t think she can love again. I just wish on screen remakes wouldn’t lore fans in and change everything.
1. It's should be a hot gentleman named Michael Stirling 2. Fran loves John so much. She never seen Michael more than a friend until a few years after John' death They can just make a new character if they really must absolutely have "representation."
I need miniorities like myself to understand that forced inclusivity is not always good ones. We deserve more than being replacements for characters who are traditionally written to be the opposite of us. I’m really disappointed with about everything this season honestly. The whole genderbent thing doesn’t make any sense in Fran’s story. If it was Eloise, it would make total sense.
I trust Shonda Rhymes, though. She does it so well looking at her track record. Go back and watch Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder, Sanditon etc
@@suzygirl1843 it’s more the showrunner I don’t trust. I also don’t like the projection she placed onto Francesca. This isn’t a fanfiction, don’t make changes that actually affects the story, especially to the main characters just to make a political statement. And if you are going to make a statement, at-least let it be more of a natural one that actually fits a character. For example, Benedict and Eloise makes sense being bisexual, even if it does not follow the books fully.
I 100% agree. It annoys me when they just change a character to a monority character instead of making a storyline specifically for them. Making Michael become michaela is one that is annoying me as I felt they got lazy, and to make her fall in lust with her while still married makes it worse.
I dont care that she's been changed to a woman, what I do care about is that she gets all flustered and acts exactly as her mother says she should if she was truly in love. I loved the understated, obviously neurodivergent, sweet introverted love that Francesca and John clearly share. I don't like that it's being minimized by her obvious attraction to Michaela. I think it's really uncool that they would underplay their love, when not all love does look like Bridgerton love when some love is understated and quiet and not typical and that introverted people were getting their moment. But by making Francesca act this way it's erased that entire love story and I think that's really uncool and honestly, I don't know how to say, but kind of ablest when it comes to neurodivergent people.
I hate this change. Michael Sterling was my favorite hero in the series and I just can't buy into this. If that makes me a horrible human then so be it. I just might skip the series and read the books again which would not be a hardship.
@@lilymary6537 it is a netflix adaption. Read the netflix article about bridgerton in year 2022 „Bridgerton is the adaption of the book series called bridgerton“. Dont worry though, the own showrunner of bridgerton Jess Brownell must‘ve missed that line as well.
Honestly this season was so trash the first part to this season was good but the second part felt rushed and made no sense at all we didn’t get the pen and Colin story we deserved and to gender flip a whole character just for diversity is crazy like they could’ve added a new character and made her Latina or Asian since we don’t have any representation for they cultures just white and black . I know the author gave her permission to change the Michael to Michela but I felt like it was a bad move. makes no sense to Francesca’s story like at the wedding she seemed so disappointed kissing him and as soon as she sees michelea she lights up for her makes it seem like she never loved John when she grieved him for years and struggles with fertility after his death it’s a slap in the face to women who struggle with fertility also
Jess brownell was really like hey queer rep is much more important than infertility rep and im the showrunner so im going to ruin Frans story for my selfish love for her book xxx
Hope they change the showrunner by the time season 6 comes out because Chris was up for 2 seasons so fingers crossed season 4 is Jess last. She ruined season 3 taking focus off from the leads with all these side plots
You do know infertility is not an issue that exclusively heterosexual couples struggle with?! They can still put the infertility detail into the story. The fans act like the story wont work just because of a gender change. I for my part am excited to see what they will make of this.
That would save the story. The new showrunner however said she wanted to make Francesca queer because she sees herself in Fran. It's basically self-insert fan fiction.
Our society sucks. There is so much effort to be inclusive ONLY in sexuality matters. What about neurodivergent people for example? As a mom of a neurodivergent boy I was thrilled with the idea of Francesca being autistic. What about the infertility storyline? Doesn’t these people matter as well? Shonda stop talking about inclusivity, you don’t know about that. I’m sick of the victimization of sexual orientation. You know that the world doesn’t revolve around that theme right? There are other people with other problems as well.
THANK YOU!! Why does inclusivity always have to mean sexual orientation?? Why couldn’t it be social status, religion, neurodivergent people, literally anything else. There are so many non-visible disabilities out there as well that never get to be represented.
I really like the neurodivergent theme and the de-erotization of love. That's about the only positive thing in Season 3. I loved that scene where John listens to Francesca's critique of music and then runs off to find the musician to arrange the music as Francesca envisioned. But of course we live in a hypersexualized world. No one is safe -- not even children. There is no dignity, self-respect, honor or decency. God forbid you even interject that in a story. God forbid I even mention "God."
Here we go, Hollywood Is always having to remake something that was already great and turm it into gay propaganda and ruining something that was already wonderful, Im sorry but Hollywood needs to understsnd we breeders have nothing against the alphabet mafia but we do have a problem with them forcing it down our throats, why cant it just happen organically and they can start by coming up with their own stories !!
Between the new showrunner, her new costuming choices and Shonda's predilection for fanfic, not to mention the semi-porno "spicy scenes," I'm almost done.
It doesn't even look like bridgerton anymore. The charm of regency era is gone it's just eyes hurting colours all around. The fashion in the first two seasons expressing and brillant and subtle. Now seeing them just gives cheap Cinderella costume vibes specially the featheringtons!!
CAN'T WAIT FOR BENEDICTS SEASON🥰 Cannot wait for him to finally leave his rake era and enter his married era. Not to mention his glow up, not that he needs one😜
Looking forward to Benedicts as well. Hope they get Sophie right and this might sound weird, but I hope they get an Asian actress to play her as their really haven't been many Asian Actor/actress on this show
@@DonniTom I've heard rumors that they are planning to make Sophie trans, so by introducing bi-sexuality into Benedicts character, they've created a path that Sophie could be trans.
@@angelal1923 how could she possibly be transgender for the time period this show is set in a transgender person wouldn’t even be possible as none of the drugs or surgeries which would allow this were invented at that point in time which means it be akin to Sophie being a drag queen
I’m going to give next season another shot since it’s Benedict story. The good news is unless they change the order we won’t have to deal with Francesca butchered tale till season 6
Book Michael is manipulative, forces marriage on Francesca and is very problematic, honestly all her books are, so we're not loosing anything. Also book John has no personality and their connection sounded very meh, whereas their connection in the TV show might be platonic but they're beautiful together
@@romalibra_booksWell they could have changed the problematic aspects of his character and that would have made sense given the time constraints of television anyway. They’ve already changed existing characters so why not change what’s problematic about Michael not his gender and Fran’s entire arc
@@patrickmcguire7896 I tried to watch season 3 but the threesome was unexpected and disappointing. Now they are planning on butchering Francesca’s story? Naw, can’t do it anymore.
This is the dumbest move ever. Yes I get this is fiction, but it is set in a real time. If Brimbsley has to live in secret his entire life about it, why ignore the rules for Francheska? It's almost like the show runner is making a political statement just to feed her own ego.
Agreed. If Queer stories are to be told then why is Bridgeton, a heterosexual series of books , not being followed but being sexually hijacked? Surely there is a series of books about Queer love that could be followed? Imagine the popularity and faithful adaptation throughout the world Tthere would be!?
I hope they quickly fix it and still introduce michael bc the majority doesnt like the genderswap. Francesca having a queer relationship just doesnt make sense for her story.
@@justwalkin1928 Her story heavily features infertility in connection to grief and therefore is the only book in the series where gender actually does matter. While queer women may still struggle with infertility that’s a separate issue from the book, since they can’t exactly do IVF on the show. The way Francesca reacted to her also ruins the relationship she had with her husband before he died. Michael also deals with a lot of guilt as well as grief after inheriting Johns title and the show has already established women can’t inherit titles.
I don't like this change because I wanted her story to show that different people can experience love differently. I like the idea of her struggling with finding a partner because of being shy and a bit autistic, not because of being gay
Ignoring the solid fanbase that this series has is going to make it crash and burn. Just ask The Witcher showrunners. They wanted to “make it their own” and now the series is dead.
They obviously went to great lengths to shove lgbt in there. I wouldn't care as much if it didn't essentially delete the an infertility storyline because those are rarely explored. Maybe that show runner should have made up entirely new characters if they really wanted lesbians, not change the story because she read herself into it.
it would have made more sense if eloise is the one who is bi/lesbian rather than francesca… netflix ruined the story😭😭😭 but i will still watch season 4 for polin
@@TheEndermanNestGPage How? The show has been great until this season, and every couple was straight. There are plenty of shows with the alphabet community to fill your excitement.
Wait - what? This Michaela character is supposed to be a love interest for Francesca after she loses John? NO for Christs sakes Shondaland please quit with the utter butchering of the authors storylines.
This is actually what happens in the book, except Michaela supposed be Michael, a man, cousin of John’s, but for Bridgerton, they changed it for Michaela a girl who is still a cousin of John’s just a female
I’m so deeply disappointed about this turn and Michael-gender-swap. Francesca’s story was one of my favourites because it represented infertility and the strain this has on a couple. And all Francesca wanted (in the books) was to start a family of her own, that was the core of her personality. They don’t really do IVF in the 1800’s. I’m all for inclusivity and the representation of minorities but I feel it’s being too forced with her story. Eloise would have been a better match.
There are SO MANY hetero love stories out there. Literally the first 3 seasons feature hetero relationships in the spotlight and with maybe two exceptions, all of the side relationships are also hetero. You know gay people existed and had relationships and romances long before gay marriage was legalized in 2011. We have had to exist in secret since the beginning of time. Making Francesca bi doesn’t “ruin” her story. Trust me, I’m bi. My love story with my male partner wouldn’t be “ruined” if he died (heaven forbid) and I went on to date a woman. There are 8 Bridgerton children, it’s statistically unlikely that none of them are queer. What is with straight people and being so offended when one in a thousand stories gets tweeked to represent queer love? If you love the books so much, GO READ THEM. They’re still there and they haven’t changed. It’s not disgusting to represent the world of Bridgerton with gay people in it, because guess what, we’ve always been here even when we were forced to hide.
@@onceuponatime2403 actually it is. In the Bridgerton novels, all of the main couples are straight, so if queer people want to see themselves centered in one of the seasons, changes need to be made. You know what isn’t necessary? Keeping all 8 of the Bridgerton couples straight in order for straight people to see themselves represented. Literally all four of the existing main couples are straight and all but two of the side couples are straight. Again, why are you straights so bent out of shape when you still have the vast majority of stories representing you? Literally my favorite part of season 3 was the surprise reveal of both Benedict and Fran being bi. That was so meaningful to me, but people like you just have to moan about how 99% of the content being straight isn’t enough for you. Get over yourself.
If the reason you want to take a writers book/books to the screen is because they are wonderful enough to make you want to “show” the story, then do just that! Why change anything you don’t have to change. If you want different this, none of this and more of something else, just write your own darn book. Stop ruining the artists hard earned creative work. I will not continue watching so the visuals don’t affect my mental images and wonderful memories of this lovely series of books.
Every show nowadays has a great start with competent writing because they want to draw in an audience. Then they start writing fanfiction and pushing agendas once it's popular and ruin the story. Literally every show is like this now.
Michael is my favorite character, even more than the Bridgertons. His and Francesca's novel, is my favorite. I am all in favor of gay representation, but this can be done in newly written series. If a series is based on a book series that has been around for more than a decade, one shouldnt change the essence of characters completely as audience have some expectations in mind and the story loses its soul which was built with original writer's imagination. I really wanted to see who they will cast as Michael, and how they will show the story of finding love again. But they have made this story into - I found love one day after my marriage, which I thought was a love marriage, but it was really nothing, and I lived in a lala land of thinking to marry a prince charming for 20 years, but now I think I like princesses. I am sorry, they made Francesca look like a complete idiot and John short changed. I am happy to watch other queer dramas but will not watch any more seasons of Bridgerton. My love for Michael Stirling wouldnt allow me.
This was the main reason i didnt like season 3. My biggest issue is that i really like Michael Sterling as a character and now they have changed it to serve their own agenda. If they didnt like the stories in the books then they could have made their own show instead of ruin Bridgerton. I wonder how does Julia Quinn feel about all the major changes?
And now fans are going to be called homophobic if this isn't beloved, they will even have the actress whining about death threats just to force fans to like the change
Okay listen I think most criticisms are valid and deserved to be talked about. But at the same time, this actress is legitimately getting death threats and harassment for this role. People can voice their opinions while noting that this shit isn’t real 😭
As a literary person, I believe fictional characters have an essence. Just like gender is the foundation of a person's understanding of the self and the world, it is the foundation for fictional characters as well. When we read a book, appearance of a character in the reader's mind is more abstract and fluid, but their gender identity is important to how we relate to the character. Anthony cant be Antonia, Daphne cant be Dan, similarly Michael cant be Michaela. Its an injustice to the writer as well readers. I am more than happy to have queer characters added or have main characters explore their sexuality, but you dont change the gender of a beloved character. When JK Rowling said - Dumbledore could have been gay, I was more than happy. I would have been happy to watch Dumbledore's gay arc in the movies as well because the books didnt have his love interest. It would have been addition of a character, not gender swap of a well established character.
@@brennabreithaupt6928 literally Julia Quinn herself was paid millions to let Jess Brownell do whatever she pleases even if it ruins the essence of Bridgerton.
Its very hard for me to identify what Im feeling now. Im not opposite racial changes, literally don’t care. But its feels weird to see how they rushed into things? Why Fran looks instantly regretful of her choice to marry John? Why is she instantly smitten with Michaela? Please, ohmygod, shondaland really don’t know what slow-burn means, are they? They rushed into things with Polin, and now they do the same with the Stirlings. Also, I haven’t read the books, but from what I gather, Michael supposed to be a Rake of all rakes, and then he falls for Fran and got to love her in secret for a long time? I felt it was so very romantic. Also, there are issues with infertility…I just don’t understand how they would fit an essence of Fran story, with so many abrupt changes. Im curious to see it, but also its so different.
Changing the bridgerton’s characters sexuality’s that is where I draw the line. Michael & Francesca’s relationship was so damn good. Also, why is Benedict bi. What the hell is wrong with them being straight. Why are the show runners so desperate to change the sexyaoities of the characters.
I'm sorry, I'm no neuro divergence expert but one thing that annoys me in these synopsis about the Stirlings relationship is constant reference of a lack of passion. They lack public passion and emdearments. Just cause we didn't get their wedding night doesn't mean Fran wasn't throwing it in a circle and I bet once he gets her to that castle it's going to be beauty and the beast in there cause he probably was a virgin too. We got more out of them in part 2 as their courtship has progressed, he's grown comfort with the family, drinking with the viscount - he's a regular solid dude once he's comfortable. So having his wife flustering at Michaela is disrespectful to the brief happiness of a genuine match and the restraint Michael has in his admiration of Fran. Make Michael "Michael", swap them out like they did Aunt Viv - make him light skin, asian, latin whatever and retell the meeting. Twist the story with a special needs heir with a short life span because of the times that passes just as Michael /Fran marry and they continue to struggle building a family.
I just binge-watched the new episodes, and I must say that I'm so, so done with this series. It's more like watching a series from another planet rather than another era. The decor and costumes are hideous, with materials that didn't even exist at the time. It's like watching the American Walt Disney version of everything. Gaudy isn't enough to describe it. And I've also definitely had enough of: - Penelope's tearful declarations (again, and again, and again) - Colin's self-righteous scoldings, - Sentimental mother-daughter moments, - Out-of-context storylines, like the one between lady Danbury and her brother, - American expressions like "What am I, chopped liver?" - Storylines like Benedict's that seem to be there only to "spice things up." He's such an uninteresting character, and I couldn't give a flying fudge about what or who he does. I'm not a prude, but that storyline, which is probably there to make things interesting (?), is the most boring of them all. - Expressions of unreasonable and undeserved praise and admiration for the Bridgerton family. They are a bunch of very privileged persons. They aren’t harming anyone, but they aren't doing any good, either. They haven't done one single good deed for anyone else but their own family or inner circle throughout the whole series. I don't see them as that different from the rest of the ton. What's so wonderful about them besides them being pretty? How do the screenwriters expect us to keep on being invested in such self-centered and uninteresting people? - I understand that this is an entirely fictional series following the motto "an occasionally true story" from "The Great." But this season, it managed to detach itself completely from even London or its surroundings or any societal context. The only thing they did was to attend balls and weddings (almost). This season was so, so bad. No humor. I'm glad, though, that they didn't write Eloise as gay because what could have been more predictable and stereotypical than making the feminist (in words only) to be a lesbian? It's so much better with Francesca having a revelation here, but if this is a storyline that will be developed I really hope that they make it interesting at least and give the characters enough depth to engage the audience. They even managed to make the queen and lady Danbury uninteresting! Their purpose was only to drive the plot in a certain direction. And the appearances of the queen popping up every now and then got tiresome. I like this channel, though, but I think that I'm done with the Bridgertons.
I could care less about people's sexual prefrences. But I am just so tired of watching shows to escape reality, only to have them messed up. So we will never see the real story? By switching genders the whole plot of the book is gone 🤷🏻♀️
Have you read the book? Michael isn't a great character, it's mostly sex the whole book and he's quite manipulative and forceful, the whole plot isn't gone, there was barely any plot to begin with + they can explore Francesca's infertility journey in the seasons before she ends up with Michaela
@@romalibra_booksI'm baffled at how people are reacting to Michaela. The show can definitely explore the infertility issues while John is alive. Also everyone talks about the books like they're masterpieces. From the passages I read, the books are boring and the male characters suck. I'm happy they change stuff in the show. It's more interesting and fun.
This is now a whole new story, it can't be called adaptation in form. Would have been good if this was an original story being made but its not. This show is based on books that has had a loyal following. It's a disservice to the fans that made the show popular enough because they wanted to see the books come alive. It's not about hating on queer representation, it's just totally changing what made people love the books in the first place.
I'm sorry no. I need the new show runner to leave the show. We came to the show to see the characters from the book. I do care about gender role switches. I came to see Michael. This is ridiculous. Stop sticking personal views into every freakin movie. Fire Jess please Netflix. I hope it tanks so hard. Theyve ruined everything. U want gay characters, write your own story, dont bring it to already established characters. Looks like only 1 or maybe 2 Bridgerton stories may be left. Francesca now might as well be the sister who never came back from Bath.
You know why Harry Potter series were (and still are!) successful? Because they DIDN'T change the story. Francesca's book is one of my most favourite among the whole siblings because her story (imho) is really complex. She became a widow just two years into marriage, she suffered miscarriage, yet she wanted a big family of her own. Turning her into a queer just doesn't make any sense to me. Oh well.. 😒
I believe the showrunners or the writer said it takes 2 years between seasons. So 2032-2034 unless they can speed up production or combine two stories into one season.
Imagine that somehow TV Francesca's Michaela plot was the original book plot. And whoever this Jess woman is read the book and said, "I'm not a lesbian. I want to see myself represented, I had issues with loss and fertility and I want to see that reflection of myself on the screen." And the lesbian Francesca book had millions of queer fans who were so excited about the story and it was just taken away from them. Would this be OK? If not, why is it OK to do what they're doing with Francesca and Michael?
So basically she loved the book and thought it was the best of the Bridgeton book, just like the rest of the world, and then decided to kidnap it. Great. So in the name of inclusion she decides to not include: neurodivergentsy, introverts, struggling with infertility and the possibility to find great love a second time. All which hade their chance with this book. And the nerve to then call everyone homophobic because they get upset about the butchering of their favourite book and their favourite characters it just too much. “What you didn’t like that I kidnapped your favourite book and changed everything about what made it great, oh well then you just hate other people because they are not attracted to men, shame on you and your hateful mind that are against inclusion” like what?!? It’s just so disrespectful. They could have used Benedict, Eloise or just made someone up and no one would have objected. But don’t erase Michel! Don’t fuck with this story that are so important to so many of the fans!! And don’t dare call everyone that doesn’t agree with you homophobic!!
Yeno i wonder if theyll change it now with the amount of disappointed fans💀 i for 1 dnt like this not because ive read frans book or luv michael. I simply HATE WHEN PEOPLE CHANGE WHAT WAS MEANT TO BE.
I don't know about Eloise going that way, I think it's a shame that people associate being a femenist as being a lesbian when all it really means is women are equal to men. we are different, but we are equal.
@@madmartagan100 I agree it's honestly a childish notion that being a feminist makes you a lesbian. But given how much different Eloise has been in show as from the book and given how adamant she is about marriage and motherhood its really hard to see her ending up getting married to a man with kids like in the book so I do see why people have an easier time thinking of Eloise as gay, I hope they do a better job setting up Eloise romance in the next season and not have it all in season 5 which is her season
@@madmartagan100 You can't be different and equal lol. That makes no sense. But Eloise has shown a clear disdain for men, so it makes sense she would be lesbian. There's a reason it's a stereotype, because it's usually true. Those types of women usually swing both ways or are lesbians.
I haven't read the books and even I know that this is wrong... I love Bridgerton for its period aesthetics, language, methods of courting and ways of live. Obviously there has been a gay/lesbian/bi-sexual community in society throughout the ages, whether we knew it or not, but for once - just honour the book as it was written! Your fiercest Bridgerton audience are those who have read the books - so please listen to what they are saying
Why do people think Eloise would be gay ? She has expressed no interest in male or females .. I don’t get it😮..Benedict makes sense.. and if his story focused on romantic relationship with a man it also would not have digressed too much since he does leave the city n society for his love .. I think they should have left Franchesca story as is .. anyways let’s see
I am open to the exploration of any storyline brought to the screen and Bridgerton series, regardless if it matches the books exactly. There would be no incredibly diverse cast with their exceptional acting if the screenwriters held exclusively true to the books. I am here for it, wherever the storyline takes us.
I haven’t read the books, but to me series Francesca hasn’t really shown any signs of being interested in motherhood. She more or less wanted to run away when Lord Samadhanj said he wanted 8 children (though that might have something to do with the number!). Plus looking back at her behaviour this season and general disinterest in men, beyond them offering her an escape from her busy household, it makes sense that she would be gay and didn’t know it yet. It would be interesting to see infertility tackled within the series, so maybe they’ll pass that on to another character.
In the books she has two children with her husband. She wanted to run away as the lord said he wanted a lot of children. She wanted to avoid that chaos, not that she didn't want children.
It also makes sense that she could possibly have Autism, as we don't like large crowds, we try to stay away from a lot of noise, and we go off by ourselves to pursue our own interests. none of that has any bearing on sexual orientation.
Here's something else a lot of people aren't considering now granted the original actress that played Francesca, Ruby Stokes was hardly seen in the first 2 seasons I have a theory that off screen and the first 2 seasons while Francesca was off practice in the piano forte it's probably when she started to discover her attraction towards the same-sex but we just didn't get to see it.
Sadly this ruins Frans story she loved her first husband. She Suffered from infertility issues and badly wanted a baby. Michael loved her for years but never revealed it. She married Michael to fulfill her hope for a baby. He needed an heir. Later she falls in love with Michael. thus, her storyline is to show after being a widow, you can have a second chance for love. Thus change Doesn’t resolve her fertility problems or provide an heir to an estate.
I’m coming around on this because WHWW is really internal and it’ll be less scandalous for them to be together as friends. Not sure how she’ll be Kilmartin though
I am sorry, but Francesca story was the one I was most looking forward to. This rewriting is just so wrong. I have supported the whole Bridgestone World but this is a bridge too far for me. Not to mention that the actor playing John Sterling is just perfect for the role and Francesca loved him totally. Now the rewrite is disrespecting John, Micheal, and Francesca.
If they show Francesca have a child with John before his passing, they lose the fertility struggle aspect but could kind of get the story back on track....and perhaps they can bond over the grief of the loss of John.
Changing Michael into Michaela for me is time to say goodbye to this show. Really didn't care for this season and yes I am a big book lover so I'll just read the books again.
I am still angry with how "they" upended the last 2 seasons of Game of Thrones. They absolutely did not care about the fans. Thank you for explaining the concept of the upcoming Bridgerton 4th season. It will be a hard pass for me. Season 3 was underwhelming and annoying. I held out some hope that the Francesca story line would offer something promising. I guess not. I think I will just read the book series and forget about the screen adaptations. Season 1 of screen series was delightful, but it has gone down in quality with each season. Enough already.
I see no issue with gender swapping, it doesn’t take away from the books, for myself, books ARE AIWAYS better than series! I enjoyed both, in this Regency era, there are bound to be a sane sex relationship, with 8 kids, one is most likely gonna struggle with their identity! Gay, bi, trans, are not made they are born that way! Seriously everyone, just enjoy the series & the books! All stories are elseworlds meaning a writers conception of the book will never be exact, so quit gripping and just enjoy the series’s, and the books as they are two different things! Rant over!
These changes are truly disrespectful to the true Bridgerton fans, those who have read all the books and enjoyed the original stories! The gay community has tried to make their own stories for years and LGBTQ projects have been sidelined by production companies due to lack of engagement and interest. The truth is that the majority of viewers are not in favor of this forced acceptance and prefer original characters to be created, rather than "hijacking" existing ones! I'm a big supporter of the gay community and its rights but I can't keep quiet when I see that, due to woke culture, everything now has to be LGBTQ to the point where it becomes an exaggeration and ruins an excellent work that fans (who have read the books and are the basis of the success of the show) want to see represented. The lack of support for this season, after all the changes that have been made, only proves that. Respect has to go both ways
I cannot believe they are doing this to the Francesca story. This was one I was DYING to see because I fell in love with the Michael Sterling character in the books. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with LGBTQ but this is NOT an adaptation. They are removing a beloved character and story line that helps you connect and love the story. I have no intentions of watching this show further which sucks because I had loved it but after this and the fact I can already see my second fav, Benedict and Sophie, falling off an odd path. nope. Sorry. This change makes NO sense. She cannot inherit the title, she cannot have children which was important to her, and she can't even marry Michaela. For petes sake fix it and have Michaela have a twin named Michael. The love story and struggle of Michael and Francesca was soooooooooo beautiful and you cannot pull off that story with a female love interest. I'm sorry. You can't. The entire love story itself is gone.
I’m so mad and it’s not because they’re making her into a lesbian it’s because they’re ruining her entire plot. I wish they wouldn’t try and force inclusivity by changing the original stories.
I thought the original stories were very good. I think it's totally unnecessary to bring in the b1sexual and lesb1an thread. Benedikt's story is very interesting, struggling and exciting in the books. And Francheseska's story is equally interesting. It's unnecessary to rewrite the whole thing so much. Moreover, in the current season the romance between the two main characters is barely explained, whereas in the book the scenes are so well written. I am disappointed.
@@lilymary6537 I thought Benedict's story was good, and yes, a good part of it was about Sophie's problems and how they kept crossing paths. I don't understand the Cressida "line" at all. I wonder what they're going to get out of it. Will she be "Sophie"?
I’ve read the books and watched the show and Francesca’s story really is the only one that can handle this type of change. I’ve seen a lot of people wish Benedict would get a Stephan instead of a Sophie, so I guess stay tuned, and we’ve already met Sir Phillip so he can’t be recast. Gareth and Lucy are still too far away for Shondaland to strike while the irons hot, and so many LGBTQ folk who have ALSO struggled with infertility are getting a chance to have their story told. All in all, we can only sit back and watch how it all unfolds. Even if some people claim they won’t watch, we both know they’ll be watching reviews and channels like this 😜
This is why i held off on the books. I will enjoy both stores without being mad. I do think the story being told in netflix needs to be told. I am open to it!
I can’t wait to see how Francesca runs the estate without her man because I’m not sure if lady brigerton (the mother ) had shown her how to like… count the books and do business with other lords etc…. But I guess Micheala can show and teach her everything because she should know how to run an estate and handle business seeing that she is 2nd in line if anything happens to lord kilmartin (which it will) lol
So glad I didn’t read the books for this series because I can truly enjoy the ride. Learned my lesson with The Hunger Games and Harry Potter where the authors were also producers.
My only problem is that it was illegal to have “non reproductive sex” …. In England during that time under the sodomy laws, even females. Living openly was very difficult.
I am beyond mad at what Shonda is doing. Please stay with the book. I will stop watching. It is just too much! They already destroyed Polin. They never showed how Polin and Lady D was connecting and being like a mom to her. Rhonda has destroyed this book. 😢
They're ruining the story with all this woke nonsense. In other shows it's perfectly fine, in Bridgerton it has no reason to be. The books' storyline was to be left alone
So jess made frachesca gay because she is gay… great… Which was the company that recently claimed that they would stop doing projects that are therapy for their producers/directors/screenwriters? Self insertion doesn’t feel natural, because is not natural! Self insertion most times leads to a story that feels fake, because the self inserted character story is too fixed by the desire of the egoistic one.
I for one am so excited to see Fran and Michaela’s stories. The TV show has already changed so much from the original stories (imo for the better) and many of these comments are just the small but loud minority.
not actually later in that book, at the very first pov of Michael, means when the first chapter, Michael alrwady said that he is in love with Franchesca
I HATE when people like Jess CANNOT WRITE THEIR OWN MATERIAL and they got to taste popularity by usinv the hardwork of other women. She seems jealous of Julia Quinn. She keeps ruining her work. 😂 Create your own Jess. Let it be. Have you not seen the witcher?
To date, there is no black woman ,who looks like Masali who is part of a hetereo couple. This is lacking and is a huge complaint amongst black Bridgerton fans.
But not MICHAEL!! I’m black too but Michael is one of my favorite characters. I was waiting to see who would be cast…never thought it would be a woman. He was supposed to be drop dead gorgeous.
Nop, book Michael is manipulative and forceful, the only personality he has is being full of lust and a friend of Francesca for years. We won't miss much
@@romalibra_books you do know all bridgerton are ploblematic. Anthony kicked Kate in the stomach but the show change thay, what made you think the show will make michael manipulative. They will make him better for tv purposes. You dumb!
They have simply assassinated both Franesca and Benedict's character. They have got brilliant actors and yet they are showing them confused, underconfident who dont even have the knowledge of their own sexuality. This isnt diversity, this is simply killing the character. I feel sorry for both of the actors and for Juila quinn who wrote the book.
I thought that Francesca possibly being on a spectrum would give more diversity for this character and queerness could be explored with Benedict Eloise or even younger siblings because in the show we know nothing about their preferences for obvious reasons
That's so true
Maybe that's why the Michaela gender swap. They'll never find an actor to pull off Michael Sterling's charisma.
Words !
netflix the witcher is a good example how they screw up the show. To a point the show was canceled.
Well said chloe - first prize response! 🤩
Agreed!
@@TheJames1201 Congrats on your beautiful baby girl
@@FluffyFaithGal just say you don’t want gay rep that’s simpler
I always disliked her story I must have a big family I like the way they made her love her music and she's a little more timid now this is the story I like. Also didn't like Eloise story she was so against having a fam then just marries a guy cause she liked how they wrote. I always thought her story should have been like she the man pretending to be her brother then finding her love.
To this I agree, Julia Quinn is the one who cheated her readers. The whole book is about her wanting a baby, because she really doesn’t think she can love again. I just wish on screen remakes wouldn’t lore fans in and change everything.
1. It's should be a hot gentleman named Michael Stirling
2. Fran loves John so much. She never seen Michael more than a friend until a few years after John' death
They can just make a new character if they really must absolutely have "representation."
Agreed.
I no longer trust Shonda. She makes shallow entertainments that she sells as culture shattering.
So she does sell fan fiction.
Stop gender swap, LBGTQ+ deserves his own story just like Brimsley and Reynolds!
I would have loved to see more of Brim and Reynolds.
That makes so much more sense!!! Like brand new characters who have their OWN storyline and I loved them so much in Queen Charlotte
Ugh while you're at it make everyone in the show white again....bro calm down
Brimsley and Reynolds 😭 I loved their story
Gender swap is fine
I hope they change the showrunner by the time Fran’s story comes and we get our michel back
I hate this change. Michael Sterling was my favorite hero in the series and I just can't buy into this. If that makes me a horrible human then so be it. I just might skip the series and read the books again which would not be a hardship.
This is no near close to an Adaption!!! it feels like Jess Brownell is producing her own bridgerton based on literally NOTHING.
I think she should be fired. She is destroying the series, which is already is a precarious situation

Self-insert fan fiction. She absolutely butchered Francesca's story.
I know the author gave her permission to change the Michael to Michela but I felt like it was a bad move. makes no sense to Francesca’s story like at the wedding she seemed so disappointed kissing him and as soon as she sees michelea she lights up for her makes it seem like she never loved John when she grieved him for years and struggles with fertility after his death it’s a slap in the face to women who struggle with fertility also
Jess brownell was really like hey queer rep is much more important than infertility rep and im the showrunner so im going to ruin Frans story for my selfish love for her book xxx
ah yes the well known knowledge that queer people can’t be infertile

Dumb book, dumb show. Nothing to be disappointed when the source content is itself mediocre.
No doubt the dumbest ever move. It appears as of jess wanted to satisfy her ego being a queer 🤮😂

I hope they quickly fix it and still introduce michael bc the majority doesnt like the genderswap. Francesca having a queer relationship just doesnt make sense for her story.
👏👏
Can I ask you why? Genuine question, because I was just getting into bridgerton
Jess Brownell destroyed Francesca's story and butchered season 3
I don't like this change because I wanted her story to show that different people can experience love differently. I like the idea of her struggling with finding a partner because of being shy and a bit autistic, not because of being gay
Ignoring the solid fanbase that this series has is going to make it crash and burn. Just ask The Witcher showrunners. They wanted to “make it their own” and now the series is dead.
The last season of The Witcher was SUCH a disappointment!
They obviously went to great lengths to shove lgbt in there. I wouldn't care as much if it didn't essentially delete the an infertility storyline because those are rarely explored. Maybe that show runner should have made up entirely new characters if they really wanted lesbians, not change the story because she read herself into it.
She really messed it up.
it would have made more sense if eloise is the one who is bi/lesbian rather than francesca… netflix ruined the story😭😭😭 but i will still watch season 4 for polin

So Jess ruined Francesca's story because she had to see her own sexuality represented? Disgusting!
Um, please stop commenting
@@missanthropy6174 no need to replace straight couple if you want yourself represented.
@@suzygirl1843 same for you?
Force inclusion is horrible. Stop ruining stories!!!!
Typical Shonda Rimes. Series starts out great, then she forces a bunch of stupid storylines in. The show runner has ruined it too.
No no no, Must be a Michael! Im not watching this story line and im probably not the only on!
She said she approved it 😮💨
And now fans are going to be called homophobic if this isn't beloved, they will even have the actress whining about death threats just to force fans to like the change
Right. I mean the hot guy who plays Anthony is gay in real life. I don't care about their personal lives but the characters they are portraying.
Exactly. 🤦♀️
All the while most of the population is heterosexual and doesn't want to see this crap.
Okay listen I think most criticisms are valid and deserved to be talked about. But at the same time, this actress is legitimately getting death threats and harassment for this role. People can voice their opinions while noting that this shit isn’t real 😭
Yes and the actors are not to be blamed for this mess, only the showrunner.
I'm disappointed with the gender swap. I was so looking forward to see Michael and Francesca, but now i think ill stop watching bridgerton.
Imagine taking on a job as a screenwriter all to ruin Fran’s story. Who approved of this?!

I thought they said they wouldn’t change the love matches of the siblings, yet they are here doing just that. Dissapointed.
I hope Michaela has a brother name Michael. Cause I meant not watch the next season
I agree with you!
And I've also definitely had enough of:
- Penelope's tearful declarations (again, and again, and again)
- Colin's self-righteous scoldings,
- Sentimental mother-daughter moments,
- Out-of-context storylines, like the one between lady Danbury and her brother,
- American expressions like "What am I, chopped liver?"
- Storylines like Benedict's that seem to be there only to "spice things up." He's such an uninteresting character, and I couldn't give a flying fudge about what or who he does.
Agreed!!!
@@romalibra_booksDid we read the same book / story? I’m not so sure. 🙄
@@romalibra_books her storyline explores infertility. How can they do that with a gay partner? Mmmm?
@@romalibra_booksI'm baffled at how people are reacting to Michaela. The show can definitely explore the infertility issues while John is alive.
I'm Soo Happy there's a queer woman in this story now!!! Yayyy

No!!! And impossible at that time!!
Yes, they should fire Jess
You know why Harry Potter series were (and still are!) successful? Because they DIDN'T change the story. Francesca's book is one of my most favourite among the whole siblings because her story (imho) is really complex. She became a widow just two years into marriage, she suffered miscarriage, yet she wanted a big family of her own. Turning her into a queer just doesn't make any sense to me. Oh well.. 😒
When will we get hyacinth and gregorys season?
2040s maybe
Well we have Benedict, Eloise and Francesca to go before them so possibly in 4/5 years. ❤
I believe the showrunners or the writer said it takes 2 years between seasons. So 2032-2034 unless they can speed up production or combine two stories into one season.
We’ll all be old and decrepit by the time we get their seasons! 😂
This season was so terrible we'll be lucky to see S4.
So true
Jesus and I thought the end of Game of thrones sucked. Jess Brownell makes that look like pure gold.
Agree. Add The Witcher its hell out here.
They may lose many of their fans with this drastic changes. I personally do not like the Michaela story line and I have not read ANY of the books.
Also, I see Eloise being bi/,gay instead of Francesca. I think that Francesca being on the spectrum would have been a stronger way to go.
I don't know about Eloise going that way, I think it's a shame that people associate being a femenist as being a lesbian when all it really means is women are equal to men. we are different, but we are equal.
I agree Francesca being autistic might've worked especially as its not a subject matter that comes up often in period drams like this.
So people can't be gay AND autistic? Autistic gay woman right here.
I think they should have left Franchesca story as is .. anyways let’s see
Please stop I like the drama and subplots you ADD to the stories but please please DONT chance the entire story this is stupid
Francesca's desire for motherhood and infertility struggles are central to her story in the books.
He's not in the books. Wish they'd stuck to the original stories.
I love this for South African🇿🇦 actors. Well done to Masali Baduza for getting the role 👌🏾❤️👏🏾
I'm excited!!
Agree. Im sure it will affect their ratings drastically. Just like GoT and The Witcher
I think they were focusing so much on building Francesca’s story so they could do this “big” reveal at the end
Benedicts story was ass, the only good part was Sophie be so fr

In fact....could we get a spin-off of their lives in Scotland?
I can’t wait to see how Francesca runs the estate without her man because I’m not sure if lady brigerton (the mother ) had shown her how to like… count the books and do business with other lords etc…. But I guess Micheala can show and teach her everything because she should know how to run an estate and handle business seeing that she is 2nd in line if anything happens to lord kilmartin (which it will) lol
This is beginning to go downhill…the show runners don’t learn a think about how forced politics ruin a show, a movie etc.? 🤷🏻♀️

I’ll just read the book when this season is on. The show runner should not be pushing her own agenda but do her job as in what is best for the story.

This serie always be woke Why are you here ?
Agreed!
Just watch something less „woke“ - there’s enough of it
THIS SHOW HAS BEEN WOKE FROM DAY 1 WHAT R U SAYING???????????
I am so excited
I think I have had enough of these changes, that's fine I have watch the season that I wanted, other than Eloise I'm not interested in these stories
So jess made frachesca gay because she is gay… great…
Which was the company that recently claimed that they would stop doing projects that are therapy for their producers/directors/screenwriters?
Self insertion doesn’t feel natural, because is not natural! Self insertion most times leads to a story that feels fake, because the self inserted character story is too fixed by the desire of the egoistic one.
I for one am so excited to see Fran and Michaela’s stories. The TV show has already changed so much from the original stories (imo for the better) and many of these comments are just the small but loud minority.
not actually later in that book, at the very first pov of Michael, means when the first chapter, Michael alrwady said that he is in love with Franchesca
What y’all complaining about 🙄🙄
I HATE when people like Jess CANNOT WRITE THEIR OWN MATERIAL and they got to taste popularity by usinv the hardwork of other women. She seems jealous of Julia Quinn. She keeps ruining her work. 😂
Create your own Jess.
I feel like they have ruined things a bit.
Nop, book Michael is manipulative and forceful, the only personality he has is being full of lust and a friend of Francesca for years. We won't miss much
@@romalibra_books you again! Oh please! Nonsense. Utter horseshit. Foreceful how??? He was anything but.
@@romalibra_booksyou do know copy and paste does not make a conversation.
I'm not sorry for Julia, she's letting it happen. she also deserves the downhill of the show
Yeah, I don't understand how could she let that happen 😭, I'm so disappointed
I thought that Francesca possibly being on a spectrum would give more diversity for this character and queerness could be explored with Benedict Eloise or even younger siblings because in the show we know nothing about their preferences for obvious reasons
