    I wish I could have been up there with you. I'm 82 years old and I remember when all that was working. There were two cars that when one was coming up the hill, the other was coming down. At the top in that tall building there was rail tracks that went south for quite a distance to the end of the dumping mountain towards the old Shamokin Hospital. On Friday nights my family used to go shopping in Shamokin and you could see the cars going up there hill all lite up and if you were lucky, you could see the other train hauling waste toward the hospital. As time went by the mountain caught fire right in the path of the cars going up the hill but that never stopped the operation. Some people loved their coal and others hated it. I used to go there with a farmer to buy rice coal for his stoker furnace he had in his farm house. I have a map or blue print from 1905 of the underground workings but I think there was a lot of mines up on top that were not mapped. Those bins or troughs that were inside were a form of a conveyor belt where they would throw coal in them and a large volume of water would push the coal out of the mine. Same thing with those steel units outside. The train on top was a loco like they used in the mines and they were electric.

    I Really enjoy your Coal Mining video's, my Grandfather and Father both worked in the mines, they were from around Centraila area called The Patch or Brynsville. My Father moved to Philly when the mines closed in 1955, I was 5 years old then.

    Wow, awesome explore! I love Spelunking, a lot of old mines here in AZ. You ever make it this way I could tell you of a couple great mines/ghost towns. Next time hard hat and waiters! Great explore in and out of the shaft. I didn’t see any ties or tracks in the mine I’m wondering if that wooden structure was some sort of conveyor belt. I think I jumped higher than you did when you panned in on that snake! LOL. Really have to watch out for rattlers here. Was long, but camera quality was great and no boring parts of the explore so definitely worth watching! Gave thumbs up 👍 thanks!

You do an excellent job of filming and explaining things at the same time ( also , walking in that stuff and not falling down : ) ....awesome job. If there was ever a nastier, more depressing, and less rewarding job than being a coal miner, I can't think of it. One thing I do know for sure is that whatever the miners were paid it wasn't nearly enough. Imagine going in there every working day of your live and spending all day in those horrific conditions and in danger all the time. Not me, no way, no how! Great video.....as always!

    I went with my parents about 1971 to the glenburn mine tour in shamokin p.a. they took you down inside of a working mine! One of the better memories I had growing up in the 60'S and 70's...

    Hya JP, That must have been dangerous work!!
    Height is a big fear of mine as well. I never admitted I was nervous climbing a ladder in USAF just to enter my jet. I never told ANYONE of my fear for years.
    I could never imagine climbing that monster tipple or any of its hardware.
    That is a frightening experience. I get nervous flying my drones often, WOW!!!

    Watched your video. That is actually a quite large mine. The area you were in is what they call the cribbing. The straight walk in was what they call the gangway. The first tunnel you showed that was all filled in was the main tunnel. They probably just blew it shut when they closed the mine.

    Glen Burn was there early 70's I remember seeing just before you get there was a petrified tree with a plaque on it telling the history of the tree.. my parents took the tour into the working mineshaft and when we came out the tram operator let me wear his hard hat and big work belt and gloves as my father took a picture of me standing next to the man and the big yellow mine tram! Great memories and a lot of this video I believe I've been in the one big glass building where they had mine equipment on Display and where you bought tickets for the mine tour.. id guess about 1974'..
    P.S. OMG I think that giant snake is one of those 100ft pythons, been known to eat a human whole 🤣

    WARNING: IF YOU ARE TERRIFIED OF LARGE SNAKES, OR SIMPLY DON'T CARE FOR THEM PLEASE RECONSIDER READING MY COMMENT BELOW AS IT CONTAINS SOME INFO THAT MIGHT BE DISTURBING TO SOME:
    Wowzers! I'm Claustrophobic (and rather "thick") and I would have been all kinds of panicked in those tight spaces, As you went through the mine I kept wincing or looking away, and was so relieved when you came out for some fresh air, and the highlight was seeing that gorgeous snake! I absolutely adore snakes and that Eastern Black Snake (colloquially called a Chicken Snake) was a nice surprise (obviously for me and not many other) He was just a youngun' though, 4-6 feet is their average length but some have been recorded at big as 10 feet! They are incredibly docile, they are perfectly comfortable around humans as you could see from him going over towards TWW (I think he rather liked you TWW!) They rarely bite/strike humans but if they feel threatened or are being attacked they will secrete a foul smelling liquid from their anal gland, and they do rise up to strike, similar to a cobra. But that 'lil guy (I use the term "lil very loosely here) had a full tummy and was very happy.

    JP you make me scared going thew minds. But that is me. Why is it held up with wood instead of metal. Wood would not last long and metal would be stronger I would think. I think the water is too deep--That snake would make me run. You should have a metal pointed cane to poke at the snack That fly wheel was something else, huge set up to do the coal job well. Those men worked darn hard. You did a wonderful job JP very interesting.

    • @JPVideos81
      @JPVideos81  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wood is used for two reasons. First, it's usually on hand and quick and easy to process until timbers. Secondly, they act as early warning alarms. If the roof/top starts shifting or moving, the timbers pop and crack very loudly which tells the miners to get out.

    That big tray or bin you saw in the mine may have been a conveyor of some sort at one point. That way when the miners got some chunks of coal loose they or another miner could toss it in there and have it get shuttled out of the mine to a waiting cart. That'd be my best guess on what that was.

    Some information on the Vulcan Iron Works in Wilkes-Barre: www.timesleader.com/archive/212912/stories-vulcan-iron-works-from-start-to-finish108971
    The location of it is the current Solomon Scrap Yard along South Main Street. That's about 2-4 blocks or so up from the Planters Peanuts building you explored in another video. It'd be on the RIGHT heading towards Hanover Township.

    At 51:37, the horseshoe shaped steel posts appear to be cable guides for pulling the cars up the hillside.

    • @JPVideos81
      @JPVideos81  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought it was cable related but i was expecting to see rollers but i guess they just served as guides to keep it off the ground.

    I find this really fascinating, I've never seen a coal mine operation before. I can only imagine how it must of been when it was in operation. I wonder how many men would of worked there on a daily basis.

    About all snakes with round pupils and rounded snouts are non-poisonous. The only exception to that is a Coral snake. Snakes that have pupils that are slits are poisonous. And mostly solid color ones are not poisonous. The more colors the more worried about the snake you need to be. The snake you encountered was just an old black snake. Pretty harmless to humans more scared of us.

    FYI this is how I was tough the difference between the two Stalactite and stalagmite are both nouns. They each refer to mineral deposits in a cave, but stalactites form on the ceilings of caves, while stalagmites are found on the ground. ... Stalactite contains the letter c, like in ceiling-which is where stalactites form.

    • @brucebartman36
      @brucebartman36 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stalactites hold tight to the ceiling.
      Stalagmites might get there.

    I thought the snake footage was the best part. The snake that came down to check on Cliff may have been a different snake; there was no bulge showing the recently eaten bird. Usually once snakes have eaten they have to rest a long time to digest.

    Generally I love your videos and have enjoyed watching them for quite awhile and often share them with others. Please put a warning somewhere on videos with things like the snake at the end or any video that has something being hurt or killed. I know it's natural. Lots of things are natural that I don't necessarily want to watch. I'll just skip those.

    That was fascinating. The Vulcan Iron Works, made in Wilkes-Barre, Pa, NOT CHINA. That's why it was made so well. When you were in the mine I was wondering why no animals were down there such as rats, raccoons, or bears. It is like a cave so I wonder why no wildlife lives in it??? Strange. You did find a snake outside which was GROSS. At least you are afraid of something. I was beginning to wonder about that. You do some crazy dangerous things, but SNAKES you are afraid of. LOL. Well at least you are normal.
