This is a re-edit video to change a few things. PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS ON YOUR OWN. This mine has a very loose ceiling and has a small opening. I will have the proper equipment next time i do this.

You are so right about not making much money. My mother was born 1927 at crummies creek Ky at a coal camp. Back then you wasn't paid with money but with script. The script would have that mines logo and there would be a hole through the script so it would not be passed as coin. If you have even heard the song sixteen tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford where he says I owe my soul to the company store yeah that was the truth. Your script could only be used at your coal camps company store. The shacks had holes in the walls and you would have to plug them with newspaper. The coal companies were hard core. There would be men with rifles guarding the camp. You spent your script only there! If the man of the house got hurt or sick and couldn't work you had only so much time to get out or they threw you out by gun point. They would take everything you owned if you owed the company store. God bless and be careful.

Where I lived when I was a kid(last street in Scranton before Taylor), there used to be a 'pit' at the end of the street back in the fields near the one cemetery. At the bottom of that pit there was an open mine tunnel going into the hillside. You could feel the breeze coming out of there. There were other numerous old mine buildings and even a mine shaft hidden in a bunch of high weeds(that I almost fell into one time).
Most of that area is now redeveloped due to Kane Warehousing. Best building was this MASSIVE one you could see from the road near the UPS hub in Taylor. It was more than half buried in the culm banks and only the one office area at the base of it and the roof were really accessible. That roof was VERY unstable, yet I crawled out on it the one day and that was the last time I ever did that. Huge drop to the inside of the building and/or a mine and I could sorta feel the ground moving under my weight.

There seems to be a lot more down to the south where The Wandering Woodsman films his videos since a lot of stuff on his channel is abandoned mines/mine tunnels/train tunnels. But a lot of them are on state controlled land as opposed to I guess the ones around here where they were on privately owned land that got redeveloped.
The one video he did recently in a park even showed a sloping mine that I guess had been partially back filled. Yet the tunnel opening was still wide open. But getting into and out of it would require climbing gear and at least having some sort of back up in case something were to happen.

I am a retired underground coal miner with with many years of experience. Please never ever go in another mine with the unsafe roof condition's this very old mine had. You two are so lucky more rock didn't fall and kill you. This mine looks to be a mine that mined anthracite coal and the coal seam is not level like other coal seams but is inclined or sloping all the way. To mine this coal you follow the coal seam no matter which way it runs. Those old coal cars look to be from the 1940's and could be from the early 1900's. You need and oxygen monitor that will read oxygen levels for you because the deeper you go inside a mine the less air there is and if deep enough underground you could die from lack of oxygen. You don't need a methane monitor, methane gas will not kill you unless you expose a flame like a lighter and that flame alone will ignite and cause and explosion. My rambling on was to give you some good safety tips. I still enjoyed your video even tho i was worried for your safety.

What type Methane detecting apparatus do you use? Looks like there was airflow, but you should take some type of Oxygen Sensor underground with you. As for the roof conditions in that mine, I was in a roof fall in a coal mine in 1982, and I have been confined to a wheelchair since. The mine I was injured in had excellent roof conditions, but it happened. I would never in my entire life have went under what you guys did in that old mine. MSA could fine you if they saw that video. I don't mean to be scolding you or anything like that, but showing concern for your safety. Stay safe JP! I love watching your videos.

As a second generation coal mine electrician here in eastern ky you should learn the dangers of coal mines. First those bars you seen are scaling bars to pull loose rock from the top not the ceiling the bolts are roof bolts that have came loose with the top from water freezing and expanding and retracting over the years. Coal mines are very dangerous do to methane which is oderless and there's white and black damp which are silent killers. Y'all pressed your luck with death. Methane detectors are a must and msha approved lighting. Idiots.

Ever heard of black damp? Keep going into them and you will find out what that is. Being a former coal miner you couldn't have paid me to go in there. No roof bolting no or rotten timbers, loose ribs and top, just a collapse waiting to happen. Not to mention methane pocks 2 to 15 percent and given a spark, boom! You got balls i must say. Good luck to you in your explores. I implore you to get a 02 and methane spotters be wise come out alive. Remember changing of the seasons brings more reasons to be aware of your surroundings.

This was the first mine i ever explored and i admit i was very uneducated of the dangers. Since this video was filmed i have been much smarter and safer. I know have hard hat, 4 gas meter that picks up o2, h2s, and others. I also talked to former miners to get educated on conditions and what to be looking for. Thanks for checking out the video.

No. Those mines are filled and on fire, producing poisonous gasses.

You sir are incorrect, they are called a cross cut in a coal mine. If it was hard rock you would be correct.
