The scratchy voices on the Genesis port fit the dark tone of the game better than the muffled voices on the SNES port. If only SS would have developed MK2 on Genesis instead of Probe.
I loved playing Mortal Kombat 3 as a kid on the Sega Genesis, and when I got my first PC back in the 2000s, my parents got me MK 3 Ultimate. Great game for me.
Things were made up for in the DS era, which got a near perfect version of UMK3, the one imperfection was sometimes the announcer (Shao Khan) speech samples were either too quiet, or occasionally not played.
MK3 introduced robots Sektor and Cyrax, Sindel, Nightwolf, Sheeva and my boys Kabal & Stryker. That's why I do love this game plus it was faster and more dynamic than previous two
Saturn version actually had music tracks that played for the wrong stages, just like MK 1 on the Sega CD, a major goof up. For Genesis owners, MK 3 was a breath of fresh air, because it was the best port of an MK game they ever had, likely due to no involvement from Probe Software. Instead the game game was handled by Sculptured Software, whom had done all the SNES MK games, including this and UMK 3.
The Megadrive version was developed by the same developers as the SNES versions unlike the first 2. Personally I liked Probes remix of the music on the first two Megadrive games. I'm surprised at how laggy the SNES version is but then I remember the first two had this issue as well, especially the first.
Beyond its quality or value as a fighting game, Mortal Kombat was very, very important from a technical point of view. The development team were the precursors of the green screen digitizing technology, an improvement over the blue screen method. Acclaim, as the publisher, saw the gold mine and invested a lot, publishing even more digitized games like Batman Forever (which was crap). Other games like Stargate and Judge Dredd used the technology. At the time, it seemed as if Acclaim could turn anything into gold (at least before Batman Forever, the game and the terrible movie). Capcom also stepped in with SF The Movie and studios like 3DO followed suit with even more digitized games (and a little studio called Naughty Dog started with a digitized fighting game). 32-bit polygons destroyed the dream and the technology itself towards the new millennium, but the original 3 Mortal Kombats remain as a very important piece of history in game development.
Retro Core oh, apparently mk3 was the first apperance of animalities and snes and genesis versions were the first games to have brutalities. I just saw that while looking for something else, even though we both like the game about as much as action 52 on the genesis. And that was the good action 52...

I had UMK3 on PSX back then and enjoyed it a bunch, the soundtrack and sounds were quite cool to hear on CD quality after playing MK1 and MK2 on Mega Drive. After reading comments, it may have been MK Trilogy, I don't remember.
Lol, I like how you started with the MK shout in the beginning of the arcade version. Also, I really like how you always match the colors for the font you use for the "BotP" text, it's really cool! Another amazing job!
Hehe, I think that MK3 shout startled a few viewers. Oh, yeah. Ever episode of Battle of the Ports has the show's logo coloured in the same fashion as the game's logo. It's sort of my on going theme.
Great video this brought back good memories of me playing MK games on Genesis and SNES.The first three Mortal Kombat games are classics in my opinion. I remember playing MK1 for the first time on a Genesis at a baby sitters house and would play for about an hour or two daily while i was there. I remember seeing MK2 in the arcade section of Putt Putt and same goes for MK3. Played the first three Mortal Kombat games at the same baby sitters house with her son. I still remember those days very vividly. Only if we could download memories to our computers and post the videos here. LOl.
I agree with you about how awful the things turn from MK3. And I have to add that I hate that invasion story...I prefer much more the "Enter the dragon" rip off tournament story line..
Its horrifying when in MKA on GBA when on Easy you can literally just run on the opponent and push him or her to the edge of the screen and tear them to pieces but if you fight in the open you get slaughtered. First EGM 0 out of 10 game of all time.
Awesome video I used to play the Super Nintendo version a lot don't remember it's stuttering though I do remember the PlayStation version having really bad loading time
If you owned a Saturn then most games on the PlayStation had bad loading times. PlayStation also took ages to save game data where as a a Saturn is instantaneous no matter if saving to internal memory or the memort cartridge.
What is so bad about the MK3 PS1 loading time? It really doesn't take that long if you play it on PS3. It sure beats the crappy 16 bit ports and is almost identical to the arcade(especially the music!), watch a side by side comparison and you'll see what I'm talking about.
I remember the first time I tried to play this at the arcade having no idea about dial-a-combo. About 6 or 7 years later I bought it on PS1 and printed out all the moves stuff. I played it a lot but thinking about having to memorize the combos and the thumb pain put a hold on me wanting to play it again.
I will say that for fans of MK2, MK3 was overall well-received, and there was definitely a local competitive scene for it. It did not improve massively on the series as MK2 did, but was completely solid.
There's also MK Trilogy, which is UMK3 with the rest of tge characters in previous games not in UMK3, released on PS1, Saturn, N64 and DOS/Windows95, seemingly as an "apology" for UMK3 not being on the PS1 and PC. UMK3 was also released on the 16 bit consoles, where they're hilariously buggy, but still playable, unlike Advance.
I actually have the DOS port of MK3 , and its the version I played at the time (other than a few trips to the arcade), It was a very good version actually, I remember people preferring it to the Windows port as it had a few extras the Windows version didn't. The main issue with it was that it was CPU sensitive, If you played it on anything faster than a 486 or a sub 100Mhz Pentium , the game ran too fast (it would give you 2 seconds to select a character for instance). Gotta hand it to the Mega Drive version though , getting decent visuals out of a nearly 7 year old system would have been a challenge. That the devs realised the limitations and focused on getting a game that plays correctly is commendable.
lightdark28 I remember the DOS port. As a kid I had it, then remember my game CD having an issue. I got another copy which not only had the original DOS port but also included the Windows 95 port. I remember the Windows version reminded me more of the PSX.
as far as I know, the Windows version was based on the PS port , while the DOS version was basically its own port , so to speak. the DOS version has things like character shadows which were missing from the Windows port if I remember correctly. There was also the story artwork from the arcade which the DOS version had , I didn't see it on any other port (could be wrong on that one though). Nothing crazy, but its little things that bring it a bit closer to the arcade the one thing holding the DOS version back was the controls of course, I know you could use a Gamepad, but even the "best" gamepads at the time from Gravis were basically worse knockoffs of the SNES pad, and in many cases lacked buttons.
The dos versions of 1-3 are available on GoG for $9.99US. The version of 1 included was the far more complete version, with the missing animatons and arcade music. MK3 for DOS alos comes with the music, and gog/cur files for burning to a CD-R, if one wants to be like me amd use it on real DOS hardware. Also, the port of Bubble Bobble on Pzs1 and Saturn is also on DOS. It uses regular .wav files for sounds and music, so you actually have the arcade music, which can be played in anything that plays wave files.
I stopped playing MK seriously after MKII. I just couldn't get into the new dial-a-combo system. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy watching crazy MK3 or Ultimate MK3 combos and casual matches. The glitch combos are INSANE! I do, however, continue to love the awesome, engrossing, and iconic music by Dan Forden! His contributions were the true star of Midway's arcade and pinball games… Whenever I hear the Black Knight 2000 pinball table I just get all fuzzy with nostalgia!!
Same here ,I think mk2 arcade was best of the series , I did play mk3 as well but with not so much passion as mk2 I use to know all finish moves with all caracters 2 fatality, friendship and pit fatality
I have the MS DOS version and think its every bit as good as the Windows version. Nice video. Thanks for making it even though you don't particularly like the game.
MK3 was a fun game to play Mark. But thankfully Ultimate came about and fix the bugs that it originally had. But still entertaining for sure. Another well done video Mark. Thank you as always and a special thank you for coming onto Atariage with wish a happy 4th anniversary to the Neo-Geo thread over there. 8^) Anthony..
I've played the first three MK games in arcade at different times and loved the experiences with the machines. Mortal Kombat 3 was one out of the three games i first ever played on the system. My dad rented a PS in 1995 from Block Buster i think we had it for four or five days. To this day i think the Play Station version of the game is the best next to modern near arcade port for PS3.
Probably best not to say anything negative about a game itself and just comment on the quality of the port. Fans of a specific game may not take a liking to such comments. Saying that I love your channel and keep up those port comparisons and also those retro games coverage. I hope you take my comment as a positive and for people to like your videos even more without hearing something negative about a game that they have great childhood memories of.
Unfortunately, you have to go WAY out of your way just to get the "console", then get an expensive camera just to direct feed it from the lens. Alternatively, you COULD get the R-Zone Super Screen, but that's even more cumbersome to pull off and capture...
Retro Core well, good for you, since all r-zone games suck, also how do you know all of these? Maybe you watched Rerez & the AVGN before, or you found out about 'em by luck?
I love Mortal Kombat 2 for its atmosphere, tone, music, and introducing a lot of the classic characters like Baraka, Kitana, and so on. Mortal Kombat 3 (or Barebones MK3 as I call it, however, I can never really get into. Without Scorpion, Johnny Cage, and other classic characters, the roster just feels incomplete. A good number of the characters introduced in MK3 I think only really got interesting in the Netherrealm Era games, like Nightwolf and Sheeva. It feels goofier compared to the otherworldly, mysterious vibe of MK2 and the fatalities are hit-or-miss. Ultimate MK3 does fare better with several of the classic characters coming back and the new stages, but I could never choose it over MK2.
Great video once again. :) The Windows Port is the best for sure. And damn, GBA version is an atrocity. I remember when i buying MK Advance expecting a good port of UMK3 but i was wrong. :P
i think the genesis versions of MK all deserve extra credit for having such a damn cool style! darker and more scary than the arcade versions, in my opinio,n.
MK3 was and still is very popular here where I live, so much that eveybody who had a Mega Drive/SNES or even the Master System owned a copy of original or Ultimate version. Not the best game in the world, but somewhat fun for killing time if you don't have a better stuff to play.
In my home country, Russia, Mortal Kombat franchise is synonymous with fighting game genre because of 1995 movie and UMK3 port for Sega Genesis. My compatriots seem to dislike Japanese fighting games. Also, Nintendo DS version is the definitive version of the game.
I can imagine Mortal Kombat being popular in Russia. Its also very popular in the US but nit as much in Europe and no where near as close in Asia. It is a shame your compatriots don't like Japanese fighting games. Wasn't Neo Geo popular in Russia? It seems to be extremely popular in many parts of the world, most noticeably in southern America and Asian countries.
Neo Geo was also niche in Russia. Amusement parks in Russia generally featured Namco, Sega, rarely Taito and Dance Dance Revolution arcade cabinets imported from Japan, whack-a-mole, candy dispensers, claw machines, water gun shooters, feed-a-rabbit and ticket booms. Arcades in Russia are considered entertainment for children. Japanese fighting games are obscure in Russia, mainly due to complicated gameplay mechanics and cartoony style, which my compatriots consider "childish".
I remember the Genesis/Mega Drive version of MK3 looking more better... Maybe its because im on actual hardware (and i dont have a 6 button) or its my CRT TV... However i though the game was glitched the first time i saw the logo.
IIRC, the developer of SNES MK1 and MK2 developed not only the SNES port of MK3 but also the Genesis port. Sculptured Software seemed to do a better job with ports than Probe Development in general...
Indeed but genesis have 3 times more processing power of snes and didn't have to make so many compromise .Therfore on snes mk3 is a slow unplayable garbage and genesis a nice fluid game experience close to arcade
MD Punisher is a letdown. Some characters like Yan Lee & Shone are replaced by generic thugs. The control feels a little off. It's also censored to hell... really baffling when it's on Sega's system. Capcom should've done it themselves or licensed it to Sega, after their great work with Final Fight CD & some of their other arcade titles.
Mk 3 was never my favorite I think 2 was the pinnacle of the 16 bit games. Even though mk 1 is rough around the edges it's style and atmosphere makes it better than 3 for me.
I agree. As mentioned in the video part 2 really improved upon the original game where as part 3 doesn't add anything at all to make the series better.
3 adds, more characters, more finishers, more combat options i.e. combo system, more story, improved mechanics, better graphics. How hard is it to not see the difference if you would be objective.
Actually you did it right to include the Saturn port, is actually pretty bad all things considered... You see, as I said many times before, I was a fan of MK as a kid due to many reasons, but nowadays I cannot deny is a pretty bad game (The music and history until Armageddon was cool tho, after that MK was just a cowmilk with "Let's see how much blood we can put all togheter"). Anyway back to the port: You see, maybe you have saw it but the port is actually based on the MK3 PS1 port, which is a bad thing since they forgot to change actual UMK3 updates, some "extra" characters do not appaer at all, the music is messed up with totally incorrect order for each stage, among other things. So it's a good port but not a totally good port, is an ok port I suppose. Anyway, thank you for sacrificing yourself playing a game I can totally understand why you don't like to show this video, regards Mark!
Surprised there was a computer port of this game on Windows. It's actually pretty good. Unfortunately, the GBA keeps struggling yet again with its own ports...
Was never a big MK fan either, had so many better 2D and 3D fighters on the Saturn and PS1. Rather play something like X - Men Children of the Atom or Virtua Fighter 2 any day of the week. 😎
How are you comparing Virtua Fighter to Mortal Kombat, they are two entirely different games. But I can beat you in either game because I have them both since I was a kid in the 90s. 😎
Was really sad back in the day that it didnt get Amiga version. Nowadays, it is my least favorite classic MK trilogy. Game Boy Advance version might share title worst game on GBA along with Sonic Genesis :)
MK2 was already released very late on the Amiga life and many people was surprised Acclaim actually bothered with the Amiga version. (NBA JAM was cancelled, unfortunately). No way MK3 would make it
Was happy to see the new episode in my subs box until I clicked on it. Man, just straight shit on the game and it's one of the best. I personally think UMK3 is the best out of the 2D versions of MK. Also, I don't know about over there, but UMK3 is still being played here regularly at tournaments today, not MK1 or MK2. I would say the weakest thing about this game is the AI. It is easily exploitable(even without using run, knowing moves, or combos). If you just play defensively and bait attacks, the AI is easily beaten even on the hardest settings. You should really give UMK3 another shot. Learn a few moves and go into it with an open mind instead of a predetermined conclusion, you just may find yourself liking it. Like any fighter though, it will be most enjoyed when playing/learning it with others and not just the AI.
Ultimate MK3 I don't mind as much but MK3 is awful IMO. To be honest though, no MK game has been big in Japan due to Capcom and SNK ruling the beat'em up market.
In CIS countries situation of beat'em ups games in general is polar opposite to Japan. Mortal Kombat is synonymous with the genre due to countless amounts of merchandise, first MK movie, main tune from aforementioned movie and UMK3 port for unlicensed Sega Mega Drive clones. Arcades in CIS countries were almost nonexistent, and Street Fighter II sold poorly on bootleg Mega Drive, either because pirates were not interested in this game or Russian gamers didn't like animesque graphics (even if they liked Earthworm Jim). Even today classic Mortal Kombat games are more popular in Russia even on SNES emulators.
Yeah, a teen would love this game but when it came out I was in my mid 20's and didn't think anything of this at all. We were all playing Street Fighter Zero at this time.
In general terms, versus fighting games looks and sounds better on SNES, but plays better on Megadrive. The 8 bit versions of all the Mortal Kombat are unplayable. Good vídeo!
ben owen Yes, Street Fighter 2 SCE is the best port, most closely to the arcade one than the SNES one. That's a pity Super Street Fighter 2 on megadrive can't say the same :(
Eh? Super Street Fighter 2 is also better on Mega Drive! The gameplay is superior, once again, and it also has more voices, better animation (more frames), more game modes... just the backgrounds and some music are better on SNES. Then Fatal Fury 2 looks about as good on both systems but sounds and plays better on Mega Drive. Samurai Shodown looks much better on Mega Drive but apparently plays better on SNES Mortal Kombat 1 is garbagae on SNES, 2 looks and sounds better on SNES but plays better on Mega Drive and 3 looks about as good on both but plays better on Mega Drive.
For me games usually look better on Mega Drive (better resolution plus better animation > more colors), then about sound it really depends of the game but gameplay is almost always better on Mega Drive, partly thanks to the wider resolution (most Mega Drive games run in 320x224 pixels while 99,99% of the SNES library is stuck in 256x224 pixels) which means wider field of view (especially noticeable with games such as Earthworm Jim, Desert Strike, FIFA, The Lost Vikings...) and also thanks to the superior CPU which make the games smoother and more responsive. Sooo many SNES games with bad cases of slowdowns, frame rate issues and even input delay, Mortal Kombat being the worst example about this!
I checked a few more: Fatal Fury is bad on both Mega Drive and SNES but less bad on Mega Drive cuz at least it keeps the dual playfield feature which was Fatal Fury's main distinction. World Heroes looks better on Mega Drive but plays better on SNES. Pit-Fighter is better on Mega Drive in basically every ways. TMNT Tournament Fighters looks and sounds better on Mega Drive but plays better on SNES. And Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 seems better on Mega Drive with more content and better gameplay, SNES version apparently is a mess. 16 and 32-bit generations are so fun and interesting to dig! Such variety and differences between the games... the current generation is boring in comparison.
Yohko M. In what way was TMNT on Mega Drive better looking than the SNES version? They were two completely different games, but the SNES version was this super colorful impressive game looking like something straight from the arcade, while the mega Drive was this grainy sad looking thing that started life on an Amiga 500. I’m a Sega fanboy, but there are some games we had to be jealous of the SNES owners and tmnt tournament fighters was one of them. Our Aladdin was better, and I like classic Sonic more than classic Mario.
The opening text made me laugh :D I don’t like the old MK one bit either. But the new ones are pretty fun to play. Great silly fun when you’re drunk, but it’s never my first choice either :)
People say the console version look horrible and that’s because they watch it on the LCD Screen. Play it on the crt eliminate the blocks texture. But still Arcade version is the best
Now I feel like playing MK trilogy for the n64. I loved that game, even if the psx had more characters. I accept that mk got good until mk9, but these old games, especially mk2, are my childhood. So back off 🐍
It's mildly irritating to see this series continue into the present day when far better arcade games never even got a single sequel. Those fatalities kept the cash rolling in, the audience didn't really care about the game play or animation so much, it was all about the blood.
I'm irritated you think all us MK fans stayed for the blood alone, I enjoyed the gameplay and world, fatalities were brief events end capping the matches that might happen if you knew how as the AI opponent was stingy with them. Things really got gimmicky at #3 for sure as MK4 was 3D for no reason, PS2 era continued with weapons and style switching. :P Only the recent games have captured some of that magic that had me like MK in the first place.
Great ep as usual! Regarding your choice to cover the Saturn port of Ultimate, there was one more port of it that could've been included: Ultimate Mortal Kombat for the DS. It's a really good port of the arcade (albeit with slightly chunky graphics due to the DS' lower resolution), and a massive improvement over the travesty that was MK Advance. It's not emulation-based like the long-delisted XBLA port from around that time, so there's that. As for your mention of the DOS port, amusingly it's that version that's currently available on digital storefronts; a few years ago Warner Bros. (the current rights owners) re-released the DOS ports of the first three games as a bundle on GOG.com. Windows version is nowhere to be seen.
Oh, I wasn't aware of a DS version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat. Wish I had know that. It's really stupid re-releasing the DOS version for PCs over the Windows port. Maybe there was some licensing issue with the Windows version?
I doubt it was licensing issues, since the DOS ports of 1 and 2 were by Acclaim rather than Williams/Midway themselves. I'm guessing they didn't wanna bother testing if it worked on modern systems so they just nabbed the DOS version, slapped a DOSbox wrapper on it and called it a day.
It is just crazy how much hate the game gets in the comments. Both Genesis versions were so much fun for me and friends in 90s, were played it for years. And I don't think I ever met anyone at the time who would hate the game.
Bhirawa Maylana that only works on certain poorly made ports or against an inexperienced opponent. Try that up against the CPU of the Arcade or against someone who knows how to play.
Yep when u up the difficulty to the arcade version they won't let that fly. Especially on ultimate mk3. But genesis and super Nintendo, even ps1, if u time the net right, like when they get close to you, it works everytime. Arcade is where it's at. I have the ps1 and genesis version and have to pick other characters since cyrax is too easy. Wish my friends knew how to play better lol
Awww cheers for torturing yourself playing a game you hate just to bring us some damn good BOTP.... blessed be Mark. PS ~ that master system music reminds me of the infamous 'crazy bus' on megadrive/genesis.
Well, the game is good enough for the laughs. Not that I'm a MK lover mind you. My favorite in the series is MK II and even then I was in just for the babalities and the glitches, which by the way, this game also have and in tons :).
You know what would be interesting. A list of TecToy games. They might have been the best SMS developers worldwide by the time they made their last SMS game.
Hard to say if the Windows 95 or Saturn version wins. It looks like the Saturn version runs at a slightly higher framerate, but the Windows 95 version isn't missing the announcer's voice lines.
retrovideogamejunkie. Strikers is actually "usefull" on the right time (this idea was actually taken from the Marvel vs Capcom series...Or maybe i'm wrong). Buuut the Run button is sometimes required for some finishing moves and some moves. Midway actually thought that block and Run automatically is not intuitive than doing manually...Meh
retrovideogamejunkie once run was addded,I lost interest...I liked that they’ve added...characters in umk3...but the run and dial a combo was still a big turn off..so I quit mek for good
i remeber there were so many revisions to the arcade cab that it almost had everyone that had been in an mk game... mk3 was the first sony game i ever bought......it was great until you fought the centuar ..... the screen wasnt big enough to properly fight it one funny thing is i didnt know they made an mk4 (the same with a lot of people ) until deadly alliance came out ......
LMAO at "frankly, I think it's shit" (Mortal Kombat 3). I frankly have to agree with you, and heck, I would probably say the franchise is good at best, but nothing more than that.
I'll defend UMK3 any day, it was a blast to play with friends back in the day.
Also the run button is quite a big part of competitive play :P
Golden Shades good for you sir! You just got a like.
Sure Trilogy is better when you have Genesis and can only dream of PS1.

Impressive.
I will say that for fans of MK2, MK3 was overall well-received, and there was definitely a local competitive scene for it. It did not improve massively on the series as MK2 did, but was completely solid.
"Super mega ultra shite edition..." I fell off my chair. Thank you.
Yep, I know about MK Trilogy. I think I've had enough of the MK series for now though.
Nothing crazy, but its little things that bring it a bit closer to the arcade
the one thing holding the DOS version back was the controls of course, I know you could use a Gamepad, but even the "best" gamepads at the time from Gravis were basically worse knockoffs of the SNES pad, and in many cases lacked buttons.
I had that for the Mega Drive and played it all the time.. it was fun.. i really liked the crazy soundtrack
It uses regular .wav files for sounds and music, so you actually have the arcade music, which can be played in anything that plays wave files.
does anyone know where to get that port?
the shitpost dumpster www.gog.com
I stopped playing MK seriously after MKII. I just couldn't get into the new dial-a-combo system. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy watching crazy MK3 or Ultimate MK3 combos and casual matches. The glitch combos are INSANE!
I do, however, continue to love the awesome, engrossing, and iconic music by Dan Forden! His contributions were the true star of Midway's arcade and pinball games… Whenever I hear the Black Knight 2000 pinball table I just get all fuzzy with nostalgia!!
MK2 was the Goldilocks of the original series.
Same here ,I think mk2 arcade was best of the series , I did play mk3 as well but with not so much passion as mk2 I use to know all finish moves with all caracters 2 fatality, friendship and pit fatality
The master system should get some credit. I'd like to see the NES try and run this game.
There was a pirated Mortal Kombat 3 on nes it's so much better than master system
@@ps-lover8380...cool I'll have to check that out
I have the MS DOS version and think its every bit as good as the Windows version. Nice video. Thanks for making it even though you don't particularly like the game.
No problem, TheRaven078. I took one for the fans :)
Anthony..
No worries, Anthony. I actually added Saturn World Heroes Perfect to the games list and a few rounds of last blade on the Dreamcast.
I remember playing the Ultimate Mk3 on PC. Liu Kang every time and just spamming the low punch/kick and the right move button for Fireballls
Yep, that sounds about right for an early Mk game.
Thanks for the comment, SaminPK. Sometimes it's not possible to please everyone. 👍
Totally agree...
Nice video. It would've been hilarious if you added the infamous Tiger R-Zone version for shits and giggles.
If only there was a way to emulate that :)
Unfortunately, you have to go WAY out of your way just to get the "console", then get an expensive camera just to direct feed it from the lens. Alternatively, you COULD get the R-Zone Super Screen, but that's even more cumbersome to pull off and capture...
Actually, I'm glad you didn't show it. It's the absolute worst version of all. Also, have you heard of AVGN?
Oh man, I'll never be covering the R-zone.
Video is awesome
Fun fact about Mortal Kombat Advance, when it came out EGM gave it a 0.0 score, the first one ever.
hahaha 0.0. I'm not surprised. It's bloody awful.
Looks like you had a lot of fun playing this ports of mk3. Lol
Yeah, just about as much food as having food poisoning and spending the day on the toilet. :p
Music:Dan forden - The roof
You missed ONE port: The Nintendo DS version of UMK3, that actually plays *really* good.
Sadly I wasn't aware of that one.
Oh wow. Sounds good Mark. Thank you as always for what you do for me and the rest in the community kind sir. 8^)
Anthony..
Love MK or hate it, it has some damn good music. (Thank You Dan "TOASTY" Forden) :
Great video once again. :)
The Windows Port is the best for sure. And damn, GBA version is an atrocity. I remember when i buying MK Advance expecting a good port of UMK3 but i was wrong. :P
For the GBA version it would have been a much better idea just to do a straight port of the SNES version of UMK, the GBA was capable of that.
the DS one is decent and it has Puzzle Kombat (which actually is pretty good a lot like Puyo Puyo)
i think the genesis versions of MK all deserve extra credit for having such a damn cool style! darker and more scary than the arcade versions, in my opinio,n.
Oh man...poor Brazil, imagine being a kid playing this in the arcade then getting the SMS game for Xmas. Holy Crap, it's mortal kombat soup
I really do feel sorry for any poor bugger ending up with that Master System port expecting it to be somewhat playable.
MK3 was and still is very popular here where I live, so much that eveybody who had a Mega Drive/SNES or even the Master System owned a copy of original or Ultimate version. Not the best game in the world, but somewhat fun for killing time if you don't have a better stuff to play.
the dos one doesnt need the cd in the drive except for the redbook audio, so i would play any cd i wanted. that was fun!
1:36 A run button is very useful. I used it all the time.
Saturn port was the best!
I have to admit it is a great port. It was handled by Eurocom who quite often delivered a good port.
I agree, the Sega Saturn version was really good. ;-)
I remember the Genesis/Mega Drive version of MK3 looking more better... Maybe its because im on actual hardware (and i dont have a 6 button) or its my CRT TV... However i though the game was glitched the first time i saw the logo.
Nice work. One tip: you forgot the DS version of UMK 3
i dont think he did it because its UMK3 not stock MK3
Ton of fun regardless
@@realfamiliarfez He did cover the Saturn version, which is UMK 3, however the DS version could be emulation.
IIRC, the developer of SNES MK1 and MK2 developed not only the SNES port of MK3 but also the Genesis port. Sculptured Software seemed to do a better job with ports than Probe Development in general...
Basically Sculptured pointed and went "Look at that!" while Probe's head was turned, Sculptured ported the Genesis version.
Indeed but genesis have 3 times more processing power of snes and didn't have to make so many compromise .Therfore on snes mk3 is a slow unplayable garbage and genesis a nice fluid game experience close to arcade
Except Sculptured Software did the garbage SNES version of MK 1 and also the mediocre Mega Drive port of The Punisher so don't overrate them ;)
I just wish sculpture did ..all the ports of mk...for the Genesis..
A SNES game for me in the day. Hours of fun.
The SMS was capable of SO MUCH MORE!
@@RetroCore They added alot of new features in MK3. They added more characters, combo system like killer instinct, more fatalities so much more.
Anyway back to the port:
You see, maybe you have saw it but the port is actually based on the MK3 PS1 port, which is a bad thing since they forgot to change actual UMK3 updates, some "extra" characters do not appaer at all, the music is messed up with totally incorrect order for each stage, among other things.
So it's a good port but not a totally good port, is an ok port I suppose.
Anyway, thank you for sacrificing yourself playing a game I can totally understand why you don't like to show this video, regards Mark!
Mk3 on game gear is one of the most expensive games on the system.,even if is trash it miss from my retro colection and I wish so much to have it
I just wouldn't bother with it :(
Retro Core the Gba was the worst ever shame the caracters look OK ,but game play is a stupid joke I never been able to finish
Mk is def overrated but I love your BOTP videos so I’ll watch
Thank you , Otero Studios.
Anytime , your channel is what got me hooked to TH-cam
Surprised there was a computer port of this game on Windows. It's actually pretty good. Unfortunately, the GBA keeps struggling yet again with its own ports...
Was never a big MK fan either, had so many better 2D and 3D fighters on the Saturn and PS1.
Rather play something like X - Men Children of the Atom or Virtua Fighter 2 any day of the week. 😎
Too right. They were actual games you could learn and fully enjoy.
Craig Wilson dude perfect
No way MK3 would make it
I even thought the GEN/MD and SNES were lucky to get ports, came right at the end of the 16-bit era.
Logan Jorgensen agrred!
Logan Jorgensen I meant agreed!
The Amiga was as good as dead and was pretty much obsolete by the time Mortal Kombat 3 was released.
0:43 Must be Shao Kahn invading our dimension.
25th Anniversary of Mortal Kombat 3 (1995-2020)
It's fine that he doesn't like Mortal kombat, all you need to know is how close to the arcade you get.
Bad idea wearing headphones ... mark you scared me to death with that scream 0:43
Sorry dude. It's not actually that loud but I think people may not expect it due to the arcade audio being low.
From someone who loves the series, MK3 was easily the poorest of the pre-polygonal MK games.
And then Ultimate came along and made it better
Saturn version was really great.
"Utta Shit" :P was alot more fun when I was in my teens
Yeah, a teen would love this game but when it came out I was in my mid 20's and didn't think anything of this at all. We were all playing Street Fighter Zero at this time.
Excellent game.
hey don't worry about the gameplay, single player MK3 is ass because of the cheating AI
Samurai Shodown looks much better on Mega Drive but apparently plays better on SNES
Mortal Kombat 1 is garbagae on SNES, 2 looks and sounds better on SNES but plays better on Mega Drive and 3 looks about as good on both but plays better on Mega Drive.
I checked a few more:
Fatal Fury is bad on both Mega Drive and SNES but less bad on Mega Drive cuz at least it keeps the dual playfield feature which was Fatal Fury's main distinction.
I do agree that the new games are much better. I actually like the latest installment.
The run by button isn't useless run jab pressure is a big part of the game
UMK3 had a competitive scene that's still going on to this day so you really don't know what the fuck you're talking about.
@Benjamin Jagun if fans only cared about the gore then why are the games still being played?
Great video. What about one on the Tony Haws pro skater many many ports
The game needs to be an arcade game to be featured on Battle Of The Ports.
It is just crazy how much hate the game gets in the comments. Both Genesis versions were so much fun for me and friends in 90s, were played it for years. And I don't think I ever met anyone at the time who would hate the game.
All depends upon how old you were when the game was released I've found. People in their early 40s tend not to enjoy the game as much.
7:20 Ouch, man!
You can just play as Sector and spam his missile from chest, i always do that and everyone call me cheap but i dont care.
That's how broken the game is :(
Hahahahahahaha, well Mortal Kombat main point is blood, gore and fatality, but as fighting game i can say Yes its broken game.
Thanks man. Yeah, I agree that the Master System audio is just awful. Deffinetly up there with Cary Bus :)
Well, the game is good enough for the laughs. Not that I'm a MK lover mind you. My favorite in the series is MK II and even then I was in just for the babalities and the glitches, which by the way, this game also have and in tons :).
Where's the DS port?
You know what would be interesting. A list of TecToy games. They might have been the best SMS developers worldwide by the time they made their last SMS game.
TecToy were just a publisher, not a developer as such.
Hard to say if the Windows 95 or Saturn version wins. It looks like the Saturn version runs at a slightly higher framerate, but the Windows 95 version isn't missing the announcer's voice lines.
It's funny that the console ports are missing the announcers voice that says "Round 1".
sometimes i don´t know what it´s worse...run in mortal kombat or strikers on king of fighters....
Wow strikers, that takes me back. That's when I stopped playing KOF for a LONG time.
retrovideogamejunkie. Strikers is actually "usefull" on the right time (this idea was actually taken from the Marvel vs Capcom series...Or maybe i'm wrong). Buuut the Run button is sometimes required for some finishing moves and some moves. Midway actually thought that block and Run automatically is not intuitive than doing manually...Meh
retrovideogamejunkie once run was addded,I lost interest...I liked that they’ve added...characters in umk3...but the run and dial a combo was still a big turn off..so I quit mek for good
i don't have a problem with the run mechanic, but you have to admit some of the strikers were cool and creative. lots of SNK franchise cameos
The GOG version is from the DOS one (that's sad, by the way). It even runs in DOSBox.
i remeber there were so many revisions to the arcade cab that it almost had everyone that had been in an mk game... mk3 was the first sony game i ever bought......it was great until you fought the centuar ..... the screen wasnt big enough to properly fight it one funny thing is i didnt know they made an mk4 (the same with a lot of people ) until deadly alliance came out ......
Arcade Wins. Double Flawless Victory.
Umk3 did get ported to the Nintendo ds as well as the iPhone/ipad as well
#1 Arcade
#2 Saturn
#3 PS1
#4 Microsoft Windows 95
#5 Snes
#6 Sega Genesis
Nice Video 👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
LMAO at "frankly, I think it's shit" (Mortal Kombat 3).
I frankly have to agree with you, and heck, I would probably say the franchise is good at best, but nothing more than that.
