    NICE! Glad to see you're still enjoying your stay in Ecuador!!! Glad you found the pasta de maní! That is just plain peanuts ground up-WAY better for you than US peanut butter with additives, preservatives, etc. and yes, only $1!! DELICIOUS!!! Another good thing with the mercados-If you don't want to buy a huge cabbage or all that broccoli, ask for 25 cents or 50 cents worth. They'll cut a piece for you. Good luck with exploring the visas-I have the professional visa. It's nice because the income requirement is lower. Double check on the time required to be in the country. I got mine back before it was divided into temp and permanent, so my permanent one requires me to be in the country 9 months of the year. That would put a damper on your travels. I don't think the requirement exists for the first 2 years though.... The investors' visa is attractive when you consider a CD will get you anywhere from 7-9% interest! Ecuador's FDIC (COSEDE) insures up to $32,000, so if the bank goes under, the entire $42,500 wouldn't all be protected. Due diligence on the bank is obviously recommended. Have fun in Cuenca! That apartment was beautiful!! If I can add to your list of recommendations, check out the hot springs at Baños de Cuenca-about 20 minutes by public bus just outside of the city. This spa is gorgeous!! piedradeagua.com.ec/?am_force_theme_layout=desktop. CHEERS!!

    Bars on windows on the first or second floors are an essential in Ecuador. They are omnipresent, unless you're in a gated neighbourhood, and even on those, people build the bars. Beside the crime thing, let's say it's something cultural? To us, ecuadorians, is also SHOCKING to go to the US towns for the first time and see you haven't got bars on windows. Like, is there no crima at all here? And local US americans will tell: No, there can be crime here too. Greetings from an ecuadorian!

    By the way, prices for imported stuff like cashews and whisky at supermarkets are indeed insanely INFLATED. Vegetables and meat are also too expensive over there. As an ecuadorian I never ever buy those at supermarket, rather go to the market itself. There are import stores where you can buy imported alcohol much cheaper. And for the cashews, we've got 'tiendas al granel' where you can buy all of those in bulk for a much cheaper price. This being said, the supermarkets are a local trap for the middle-to-high class in Ecuador. Since 2019 prices for imported stuff had being reducing compared to what it was in the early 2010s. Imagine how expensive it was by then, no joke. Greetings again, I didn't reach that part of the video!

    I really enjoy your videos and your information on the professional visa raised my hopes. Just to have it squashed when I researched more. It appears $425 amount is set to change to $1275 and the cost of transferring transcripts due to translation cost, mailing FedEx is around $4,000. This cost would be workable but no the monthly cost. So far there has been no grandfathering in for renewals. Of course this is all subject to change. The immigration rules as well as the government is constantly in flux. Ecuador seems lovely and unlike the US the people and the whole atmosphere seems much calmer and livable. However the rules constantly changing s discouraging. But good luck with your travels

    • @TheYarbros

      Can't tell you anything about the $4k transferring transcript fee. It's free to have your degree reviewed if it isn't already I. EC's database and there is a lot of confusion regarding the Professional Visa. it is still $425 showing for 3 months. I would not concern myself w/ what is coming but what is. My opinion. We are interviewing a n attorney today and or current information came from the most prominent attn. here who's doing this work every day.

I was super nervous about taking the buses in Mexico after riding on them in the early 1980’s, super fast drivers, passing on blind curves, rickety buses. Have you run into any anti-black racism in Ecuador or any of the places you’ve visited? I’m really concerned about the rise in white supremacy here in the U.S. One of the reasons, plus the cost of living, to leave this country. My husband and I visited Ecuador about 5 years ago and really liked it, but we were only there a few days. We’re a mixed race couple (I’m black, he’s white) and we didn’t experience any. It’s hard to tell on a short visit though.

    • @TheYarbros
      @TheYarbros  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, anti-black racism here that we've experienced. We just had lunch with a black expat in a restaurant owned by a black Ecuadorian who is married to a white Canadian. Mixed marriages are very common here. This seems to be a very diverse place. I don't believe all that glitters is gold but by all accounts white supremacy has not footing here. Multiple tribes and ethnicities co-exist here in peace.

      Cuenca has its own caste system. On top are the about 8,000 people with pure European blood. Then come the mestizos (people with a mix of European and indigenous blood) and after them the indigenous. The afro-ecuatorianos are at the bottom in Cuenca. People will always ask who you know and will tell you whether that person is from a good family or not. Your family name and place in the caste is important for getting a job and for marriages.
