This video I think is a product of it's time. 11 years ago people weren't as knowledgeable about house rabbit care than they are now. I don't think this is brutal by any means and the owner meant well, but it is generally accepted that a warm, damp wipe around the butt is as much of a bath as a rabbit will need. Noone is an expert, it's just we all have Internet access. Taking the time to read the house rabbit society website is all it takes to be informed. Better to do that than be ignorant, I feel.
@Sardonicus Pretty sure OP is talking about general bathing, not special cases like the one you mentioned regarding motor oil. Wild Rabbits outside in the rain don't get soaked/saturated with water like a pet rabbit would when being bathed, so that's a little different too.
@Sardonicus I don't really see why you felt the need to be so rude to someone just mentioning something that is important to keep in mind, who had no way of actually seeing the comment you had replied to originally. I also think it's important that people understand WHY it's dangerous to bathe rabbits. Rabbits have incredibly weak hearts, and can literally have a heart attack from panicking, which they tend to do if they get saturated with water (so slipping and falling into a river would most likely be a death sentence to a rabbit). On top of that, they are susceptible to colds, respiratory infections, pneumonia and much more, AND if they thrash and twist and try to get away, they can easily fracture something or even break their spine, as their bones are really fragile. This bunny is obviously okay, BUT it's important to educate people when things like this shows up in people's recommended feeds, and you shouldn't be angry with someone for adding information onto something you've said, even if they misunderstood where you were originally coming from. People just want the best for other rabbits in the future, so they don't have to experience unnecessary discomfort. Bathing your rabbit is VERY rarely the right choice.
@Sardonicus Definitely not advisable, but some buns can get very dirty around their rear ends and will need a little help with cleaning to avoid things like flystrike - which can absolutely kill your bunny. If that happens, it's a good idea to sponge bath their butt if possible and then make sure they are towel dried after.

Oh dear...this is very cute, he looks like a very sweet baby, but in future please don’t do this. I know it seems pretty harmless, but rabbits can’t regulate their body temperature very well and giving them a shower can make them so cold they go into shock or even die. I didn’t even know this until a little bit ago, so I just try to spread the info where I can. That said, he’s an adorable little man and I love him!

Yes, it has been eleven years since they uploaded this, I see where you’re coming from, the original uploader may not have rabbits anymore, however this comment is still relevant. Many people may come to this video uneducated and just think it’s cute, or worse do exactly what they did by washing their rabbit, so this comment is important for people to see. It can prevent others making the same mistake out of ignorance. Not to mention the original uploader may still have rabbits and comments like this could have helped them to understand why it is vital you do not wash your rabbit. With the possibility that this comment may be informing, educating and preventing others from washing their rabbits then I think that it is fine, even considering that the video was posted eleven years ago.

I for one have actually worked in quite a few rescues, I have 15 rabbits, 5 of them rescues and the others adopted or bought pets. i have worked with counless animals from the tiniest field mouse I spent weeks nursing and raising myself to even elephants and hippopotamus. My Aunt works in a zoo, my cousin is a vet tech, and I actually helped run a rescue out of my own home growing up. Just because i am in the comment section doesnt mean I am not educated or that what i am saying isnt fact. Bottom line here is that most people dont realize how fragile rabbits are to keep. literally things as simple as flipping them on their back can kill them and loud noises at night can cause them to jump and actually break theor own neck or spine. It happens all to often. And the *fact* is that rabbits should not ever be bathed like this as their physical body is not equipped to handle being suberged in water. Many small domesticated mammals are like this actually including hamsters, rats, guinea pigs, and gerbils. But people appear to be under the impression that taking care of (exotic)animals is easy....meanwhile most of the population cant even keep a goldfish alive and then just sit wondering why instead of researching it
Collins Ongaya wild rabbits cannot be compared to domesticated rabbits. how many times to I have to say that?? also I have 15 rabbits and 5 of them rescues with medical conditions. I have only had to bathe one of them and only twice and both baths were butt baths with a vet's orders and instructions and were onky to clean a poop butt from her peeing and pooping and then sitting in it when she was sick and recovering. I really hate being one of those people but as a rabbit owner it’s hard to let this stuff just slide. Rabbits catch hypothermia easily even the slightest drop in temperature can put them into shock which obviously can be fatal to them. Also they’re naturally clean animals they groom themselves and are rarely ever dirty. To clean them all you need is a warm semi damp cloth with a bit of baby shampoo that’s it

@@watsonphitness9117his nose is twitching, and his eyes aren't showing any white. if he was scared, he would be trying to run out of the tub. i had to brush my bunny in the bathtub (not filled) and he would try to run or climb away the first time. pets calm him down though. but now he gets excited when i brush him to clean up any shed fur and he turns into a loaf whenever i do it. this bunny is fine. he's calm. i don't think you've seen a truly scared bunny. ones that scream, stop the nose twitching, and show whites of their eyes. now is showers bad for bunnies? sure if you aim to clean them of their oils. but either A: this is a rare thing the owners do in the video as some sort of special treatment, or B: the bunny was absolutely filthy and had to be washed with water (room temperature to not be too cold or too hot). that's just what im thinking though. but other than that, this bunny is fine.

Technically u dont need to give bunnies any showers because they are very clean animals, but it doesnt hurt to give them one every few months as long as they dont freak out while being in the bathtub

It’s up to personality but all rabbits will die of Hypothermia and go into shock if you don’t do it properly. Make sure you do your research beforehand. Work with your rabbits limitations, don’t force them into stressful positions and still be aware even if your rabbits don’t mind baths Edit: Check the description. The rabbit has a condition and needs to be washed if they cannot clean themselves. Rabbits also have personalities so they may like something if done right.

This bunny is adorable, but please don’t bathe him/her!! I understand that this specific bunny had health problems and it was needed, but this is mainly for all of the other bunny owners! They can go into shock bc of it, if they get gunk on their feet or anywhere really, you can either take a wet towel to it or a wet wipe. Thanks!

Look how absolutely terrified this rabbit looks. It looks around. It licks. For sure, terrified. lol I have three rabbits and saw all of them showing signs of fear at some point (last one was actually today, first time we took her for a walk, she has way too much energy and needs the extra exercise). This bun looks like its thinking "Huh the water tastes different today" lol I really wish people would read descriptions before commenting, but at the same time its good to see they're trying to help strangers take better care of their animals. I remember when I had a hamster, I was just a kid and knew nothing about them; I also didn't have access to the internet, so I just followed what the seller told me. I can still remember how small the cage was. =(

I can't believe the things people get worked up over. That rabbit's body language is definitely NOT fear! Those busy eyes are not fearful. The owner is using plain water & maybe the bunny needed a little extra cleaning. They get soaked outside, people!
Just googled it....it is harmful...says that it can destroy their protective coats and they don't require baths because they clean themselves and it can risk them getting stressed out or having a heart attack🤗

And "loom" things up yourself 2- _No matter how fast an animal runs, they will get wet, and pets will need a wash if they get dirty enough._ Not washing them with warm water (that the bunny above clearly is enjoying) will probably ruin their coats more than anything and could get them fleas or other pests just like any other animal. Would you rather leave the bunny to clean muck out of it's own fur? Even if you didn't know what was in it?

Rabbits do not require routine bathing and in fact frequent washing, either with or without shampoo, strips the rabbit's fur of its natural oils, which helps to keep the rabbit's coat in good condition. Bathing is also extremely stressful for rabbits and has many potential and serious dangers. In addition to being extremely stressful, bathing can be bad for your rabbit's health. Wet fur can cause hypothermia quickly, especially if you use cold water. In addition, if water gets into your rabbit's nose or ears, it can cause an ear infection, which can be both painful and serious.

Bc bunnys aren’t supposed to take baths or showers and Ik this video was made a long time ago but people are still so uneducated about this and how bad it is for a bunny to shower or bathe they clean/groom themselves they don’t need baths in the first place! The most you should do if they get dirty (which their pretty clean animals) you can use a wet wipe/baby wipe to clean them if you have to. I’m not trying to hate I’m just informing people.
As a rabbit owner, I'd say I really don't know what the best way to bathe a rabbit is. However, it seems like this rabbit isn't stressing out as much as if you were to actually set a rabbit in water (rather than pour water over them).
I have had a rabbit for 2 years and I can say with certainty that you DON'T BATH A BUNNY. Rabbits will clean themselves by licking themselves and don't need showers. The rabbit in the video didn't seem stressed because they were going into a state of shock which can easily be deadly.
@@miri4388 To my original comment, I should've added that in most cases it's unnecessary to give your rabbit a bath. Most rabbits are able to clean themselves well. On the other hand, the rabbits we've had were Jersey Wooley rabbits. They tended to need a little extra help with grooming because they had so much fur. We probably shouldn't have given them baths, (and we really only tried bathing them a couple of times in about an inch or so of warm water with a towel underneath them) but as we did, I was just trying to say in the original comment that the rabbit in the video looked more calm than if you were to set him/her in water. Another reason why I was saying that rabbits might prefer a shower over a bath was because our Jersey Wooleys used to like to sit outside on the deck while it was raining for some reason. Anyways, sorry for not adding any real disclaimer to the original comment. After I wrote it, I heard somewhere that a damp cloth is a much better way of cleaning your rabbit if they need it.
Actually please don't bathe rabbits. Only then when the vet says so. They can't regulate their body temperature while in water and they groom and clean themselves! They could die of shock while bathing so I don't recommend it :-)

for everyone commenting this can be bad for the bunny, that can be true. However, sometimes, it is needed. Example: the bunny has a condition. 2. They really need it because they're really dirty. 3. The bunny is not cleaning itself at all(however water probably wouldn't be needed.) My aunt has 2 bunnies, and has bathed the older one multiple times (he needed it, he has a issue) and he is completely fine. Also bathed the younger one (less than a year old) because it needed it, and it's completely fine. Yes, giving a bunny a bath can be really bad. But, if you set the water to room temperature or VERY CLOSE TO THAT so the bunny can adjust to it better itll likely be fine. I'm no professional at all don't take my word for it but it won't always hurt the bunny. Plus, this video is 11 years old. This bunny has likely passed away by now. Products designed for bunnies also are necessary, and you should be extremely careful.
I had a bunny with teeth issues (I found out later) so he needed baths a couple times a week. He loved them. He would hop over to the water as it flowed out of the tub faucet and stand under it. He was over 8 lbs so it wasn’t harsh on him. Normally bunnies are like cats; they don’t need baths, it’s true. But each owner and veterinarian knows an individual pet’s needs. ☺️

But still the viewpoint remains that ANY water mixed with a rabbit is unsafe or abuse. Most rabbit forums stress this as if it were physical law, and many of these communities tend to hold on to care or diet recommendations developed in the 1980s and 1990s. Frivolous accusations of animal abuse can ruin someone's life, result in the animal being confiscated (and usually euthanized), and desensitizes the world to REAL animal abuse. In other words, frivolous accusations of abuse harm animals and people alike...so why is it that the YT animal rights crusaders are more interested in falsely accusing loving rabbit owners than they are trying to stop the truly barbaric Draize Test.

If water was so harmful to rabbits, how come I always see them get out of their holes to play when it's raining?? I completely agree with this comment. Water isn't harmful for any animal when used with care and caution. Proper animal carers would realise that bunnies need to bath every now and again, just like humans do, and birdos, and doggos, and every other animal out there. Even cats can enjoy a bath for a moment or two if there is shallow water. It's really only abuse if there is an intent to harm and if the bunny is drowned and/or in distress.
Rabbits can be bathed as long as they are not submerged in water!! The way that they are bathing this bunny is fine because there is clearly a very minimal amount of water in the bathtub and the bunny is still responding and moving around. The owner clearly knows when to turn the water off because the bunny tried sticking its face in the sprayer and the owner stopped using it until it moved its face back.
Y'know, that's why they're using a shower. I'd imagine using the shower on a warm setting, and drying the rabbit straight afterwards would result in zero concern.
If you don't wash them properly, yes. Use warm water, dry immediately, and any potential for harm is non-existent. Don't see why using a warm shower vs a warm bowl would be any less effective in this regard.

Rabbits in the rain will look for shelter. They don't like water and every specialized vet will tell you that you shouldn't bathe your rabbit.(Btw, rain and shower head are two different things and fyi, rabbit life expectancy outside is very short and part of that is because they catch a cold ).
See how the Rabbit is standing on it's hind legs? It's trying to get out! Rabbits are meticulously clean and almost never need a bath. Bathing them can even be harmful, since they tend to panic in water and may fracture a limb or their spine if they thrash around.... But it's usually not safe or beneficial to wet down the bunny's whole body. If you have to clean your Rabbit, use a wet wash cloth.😰

Never shower your bunny, unless its serious emergency of some sort of bug infestation. Their skin are much more sensitive than human, can cause blisters and other, some can be alergic to water. Some scared of shock and stress. I dont even going to mention all the issues with ears which can happen if water gets in them. If they get dirty paws just take a wet tissue and wipe it with care. I own buns over 20 years never had issues related to water.

She has problems because the breeder was interbreeding. Please don't get animals from breeders either. They grow fungus when their fur gets wet. It's possible to clean without showering her and the water was likely putting her in mild shock.
Bunnies can’t have baths... they’ll have a heart attack and die what I mean by this (because obviously I need to clarify) is that by giving your bunny a bath (which in my opinion includes putting them in a bath and bathing them like you would a dog. Or a cat) can kill them. Bunny’s (much like cats) are very good at keeping themselves clean and don’t really need to be bathed. Baths can send bunny’s into shock, get hypothermia and cause rashes and infections in their skin. But using a warm wash cloth or a wet wipe or something like that is good because you can just gently clean them and that can’t really harm them in any way. Also I had a bunny and I did my research.

I bathed my last rabbit probably 50 times in his life, and he lived to be 13 years old. Never got sick his entire life.

Oh dear...this is very cute, he looks like a very sweet baby, but in future please don’t do this. I know it seems pretty harmless, but rabbits can’t regulate their body temperature very well and giving them a shower can make them so cold they go into shock or even die. I didn’t even know this until a little bit ago, so I just try to spread the info where I can.
That said, he’s an adorable little man and I love him!

Many people may come to this video uneducated and just think it’s cute, or worse do exactly what they did by washing their rabbit, so this comment is important for people to see. It can prevent others making the same mistake out of ignorance. Not to mention the original uploader may still have rabbits and comments like this could have helped them to understand why it is vital you do not wash your rabbit. With the possibility that this comment may be informing, educating and preventing others from washing their rabbits then I think that it is fine, even considering that the video was posted eleven years ago.

Collins Ongaya no of course not but that doesnt mean they cant know what they are talking about. I for one have actually worked in quite a few rescues, I have 15 rabbits, 5 of them rescues and the others adopted or bought pets. i have worked with counless animals from the tiniest field mouse I spent weeks nursing and raising myself to even elephants and hippopotamus. My Aunt works in a zoo, my cousin is a vet tech, and I actually helped run a rescue out of my own home growing up. Just because i am in the comment section doesnt mean I am not educated or that what i am saying isnt fact.
Bottom line here is that most people dont realize how fragile rabbits are to keep. literally things as simple as flipping them on their back can kill them and loud noises at night can cause them to jump and actually break theor own neck or spine. It happens all to often. And the *fact* is that rabbits should not ever be bathed like this as their physical body is not equipped to handle being suberged in water. Many small domesticated mammals are like this actually including hamsters, rats, guinea pigs, and gerbils. But people appear to be under the impression that taking care of (exotic)animals is easy....meanwhile most of the population cant even keep a goldfish alive and then just sit wondering why instead of researching it

I have only had to bathe one of them and only twice and both baths were butt baths with a vet's orders and instructions and were onky to clean a poop butt from her peeing and pooping and then sitting in it when she was sick and recovering. I really hate being one of those people but as a rabbit owner it’s hard to let this stuff just slide. Rabbits catch hypothermia easily even the slightest drop in temperature can put them into shock which obviously can be fatal to them. Also they’re naturally clean animals they groom themselves and are rarely ever dirty. To clean them all you need is a warm semi damp cloth with a bit of baby shampoo that’s it

i had to brush my bunny in the bathtub (not filled) and he would try to run or climb away the first time. pets calm him down though. but now he gets excited when i brush him to clean up any shed fur and he turns into a loaf whenever i do it.
this bunny is fine. he's calm. i don't think you've seen a truly scared bunny. ones that scream, stop the nose twitching, and show whites of their eyes.
now is showers bad for bunnies? sure if you aim to clean them of their oils. but either A: this is a rare thing the owners do in the video as some sort of special treatment, or B: the bunny was absolutely filthy and had to be washed with water (room temperature to not be too cold or too hot).

Edit: Some rabbits like it. Some don’t. It’s up to personality but all rabbits will die of Hypothermia and go into shock if you don’t do it properly. Make sure you do your research beforehand. It’s cruel to just shove any rabbit into a small bath. I’m a rabbit owner and my rabbits don’t like the whole idea of baths. It gives them too much anxiety so I wipe them with a wet cloth. Work with your rabbits limitations, don’t force them into stressful positions and still be aware even if your rabbits don’t mind baths
Edit: Check the description. The rabbit has a condition and needs to be washed if they cannot clean themselves. Rabbits also have personalities so they may like something if done right.

This bunny is adorable, but please don’t bathe him/her!! I understand that this specific bunny had health problems and it was needed, but this is mainly for all of the other bunny owners! They can go into shock bc of it, if they get gunk on their feet or anywhere really, you can either take a wet towel to it or a wet wipe. Thanks!

Rabbits do not require routine bathing and in fact frequent washing, either with or without shampoo, strips the rabbit's fur of its natural oils, which helps to keep the rabbit's coat in good condition. Bathing is also extremely stressful for rabbits and has many potential and serious dangers.
In addition to being extremely stressful, bathing can be bad for your rabbit's health. Wet fur can cause hypothermia quickly, especially if you use cold water. In addition, if water gets into your rabbit's nose or ears, it can cause an ear infection, which can be both painful and serious.

Bc bunnys aren’t supposed to take baths or showers and Ik this video was made a long time ago but people are still so uneducated about this and how bad it is for a bunny to shower or bathe they clean/groom themselves they don’t need baths in the first place! As a rabbit owner, I'd say I really don't know what the best way to bathe a rabbit is. However, it seems like this rabbit isn't stressing out as much as if you were to actually set a rabbit in water (rather than pour water over them).
I have had a rabbit for 2 years and I can say with certainty that you DON'T BATH A BUNNY. Rabbits will clean themselves by licking themselves and don't need showers. The rabbit in the video didn't seem stressed because they were going into a state of shock which can easily be deadly.
@@miri4388 To my original comment, I should've added that in most cases it's unnecessary to give your rabbit a bath. Most rabbits are able to clean themselves well. On the other hand, the rabbits we've had were Jersey Wooley rabbits. They tended to need a little extra help with grooming because they had so much fur. We probably shouldn't have given them baths, (and we really only tried bathing them a couple of times in about an inch or so of warm water with a towel underneath them) but as we did, I was just trying to say in the original comment that the rabbit in the video looked more calm than if you were to set him/her in water. Another reason why I was saying that rabbits might prefer a shower over a bath was because our Jersey Wooleys used to like to sit outside on the deck while it was raining for some reason. Anyways, sorry for not adding any real disclaimer to the original comment. After I wrote it, I heard somewhere that a damp cloth is a much better way of cleaning your rabbit if they need it.

for everyone commenting this can be bad for the bunny, that can be true. However, sometimes, it is needed. Example: the bunny has a condition. 2. They really need it because they're really dirty. 3. The bunny is not cleaning itself at all(however water probably wouldn't be needed.)
My aunt has 2 bunnies, and has bathed the older one multiple times (he needed it, he has a issue) and he is completely fine. Also bathed the younger one (less than a year old) because it needed it, and it's completely fine. Yes, giving a bunny a bath can be really bad. But, if you set the water to room temperature or VERY CLOSE TO THAT so the bunny can adjust to it better itll likely be fine. I'm no professional at all don't take my word for it but it won't always hurt the bunny. Plus, this video is 11 years old. This bunny has likely passed away by now. Products designed for bunnies also are necessary, and you should be extremely careful.

I had a bunny with teeth issues (I found out later) so he needed baths a couple times a week. He loved them. He would hop over to the water as it flowed out of the tub faucet and stand under it. He was over 8 lbs so it wasn’t harsh on him. Normally bunnies are like cats; they don’t need baths, it’s true. But each owner and veterinarian knows an individual pet’s needs. ☺️

The comments in this video illustrate how a misinformed opinion can be presented as fact. Many rabbit forums are littered with statements claiming a rabbit should never be bathed and that bathing a rabbit is extremely dangerous. However, it can be totally safe. While rabbits only need bathing in rare circumstances, there are scenarios when NOT bathing them can be abuse. For example, if the rabbit gets into some sort of liquid that she should not have & this liquid may be toxic to rabbits, the sooner you shower the rabbit, the less liquid the rabbit will consume while cleaning itself.
Certainly, one needs to take certain actions to ensure that the rabbit's safety...for example, ensuring the body temp stays stable, stress is kept to a minimum, the undercoat is fully dried, and the soap used is extremely mild to minimize how much natural skin oil is removed in the process.
But still the viewpoint remains that ANY water mixed with a rabbit is unsafe or abuse. Most rabbit forums stress this as if it were physical law, and many of these communities tend to hold on to care or diet recommendations developed in the 1980s and 1990s. Frivolous accusations of animal abuse can ruin someone's life, result in the animal being confiscated (and usually euthanized), and desensitizes the world to REAL animal abuse.
In other words, frivolous accusations of abuse harm animals and people alike...so why is it that the YT animal rights crusaders are more interested in falsely accusing loving rabbit owners than they are trying to stop the truly barbaric Draize Test.
Agreed. People care more about the idea of animals more than they care about actual animals. Their hyperbole is about themselves and their selfish desires to be supreme. It's pathetic and sick to watch how many people scroll through cute animal videos and slavering to see abuse happen so they can tell people off. They're the worst kinds of hypocrites and really have no business around animals because they have no real heart or ability to shut the hell up and learn.

I completely agree with this comment. Water isn't harmful for any animal when used with care and caution. Proper animal carers would realise that bunnies need to bath every now and again, just like humans do, and birdos, and doggos, and every other animal out there. Even cats can enjoy a bath for a moment or two if there is shallow water. It's really only abuse if there is an intent to harm and if the bunny is drowned and/or in distress.

Rabbits can be bathed as long as they are not submerged in water!! The way that they are bathing this bunny is fine because there is clearly a very minimal amount of water in the bathtub and the bunny is still responding and moving around. The owner clearly knows when to turn the water off because the bunny tried sticking its face in the sprayer and the owner stopped using it until it moved its face back.

Y'know, that's why they're using a shower. I'd imagine using the shower on a warm setting, and drying the rabbit straight afterwards would result in zero concern.

If you don't wash them properly, yes. Use warm water, dry immediately, and any potential for harm is non-existent. Don't see why using a warm shower vs a warm bowl would be any less effective in this regard.

Rabbits in the rain will look for shelter. They don't like water and every specialized vet will tell you that you shouldn't bathe your rabbit.(Btw, rain and shower head are two different things and fyi, rabbit life expectancy outside is very short and part of that is because they catch a cold

Rabbits are meticulously clean and almost never need a bath. Bathing them can even be harmful, since they tend to panic in water and may fracture a limb or their spine if they thrash around.... But it's usually not safe or beneficial to wet down the bunny's whole body.
If you have to clean your Rabbit, use a wet wash cloth.😰

Never shower your bunny, unless its serious emergency of some sort of bug infestation. Their skin are much more sensitive than human, can cause blisters and other, some can be alergic to water. Some scared of shock and stress. I dont even going to mention all the issues with ears which can happen if water gets in them. If they get dirty paws just take a wet tissue and wipe it with care. I own buns over 20 years never had issues related to water.

She has problems because the breeder was interbreeding. Please don't get animals from breeders either. They grow fungus when their fur gets wet. It's possible to clean without showering her and the water was likely putting her in mild shock.

what I mean by this (because obviously I need to clarify) is that by giving your bunny a bath (which in my opinion includes putting them in a bath and bathing them like you would a dog. Or a cat) can kill them. Bunny’s (much like cats) are very good at keeping themselves clean and don’t really need to be bathed. Baths can send bunny’s into shock, get hypothermia and cause rashes and infections in their skin. But using a warm wash cloth or a wet wipe or something like that is good because you can just gently clean them and that can’t really harm them in any way. Also I had a bunny and I did my research.
