1 - generalists effect: have more experience in other fields makes you better and more creative at each of them overall 2 - networks effect: having positive influencing people around you helps you grow further and fail more safely 3 - undoing effect: positive emotions help undo stress & anxiety writing it down so my brain retains this info better. amazingly well done video man!
Also if you're a creative, be it writer, visual artist/designer, musician, or game designer (video or table-top). Touching grass and getting a hobby is so essential not only to get inspiration as most would already assume, but also problem solve to make creative ideas work. Shigeru Miyamoto loved exploring the woods as a kid which had inspired Zelda and loved gardening after he had already released classics to make Pikmin; and being in the woods must've allowed him to encounter his fair share of bugs, hence why during Metroid Prime's development he suggested to the perspective problem they were having if Samus's POV could be similar to a bug's POV. Hayao Miyazaki in response giving heavy criticism to automated animation said that an animator cannot live off of instant ramen alone, suggesting that animators (also applicable to illustrators) must go outside and interact with others, because the automated animation he was shown for a zombie would ignore any strain a body would be pulled through, because to an extent, a zombie might not feel pain but the body still has physical limits a real animator would be innately aware of. So yes, hobbies and going outside and interacting with others or just observing others (like walking red flags, just observe from afar).
I think this is my new favourite thought piece on why touching grass is important. I love that sentiment from Hayao Miyazaki, thanks for sharing this!!
@@arteriYT thank you! 💜 However, though I have confidence my mini-essay applies to musicians, I’m unsure what examples there are where a musician’s hobbies and outdoor activities more directly contributed to their work. Since the idea was how the video covers hobbies influencing creative inspiration affecting jobs that were more known for problem-solving, and responding with how hobbies can inspire more affective problem solving for a creative’s obstacles. So I can give an example how hobbies inspire my art, I cannot speak first-hand on music or game dev, although the third-hand example of Shigeru Miyamoto’s Metroid Prime advice covered the latter. I simply don’t know a good example, it would help to know, and they can be famous (not necessarily pop) musicians, from indie to idol, wave to core, or composers on film or games. I do know that I can recall stories of problem solving, but not in direct relation hinting to hobbies, like how Toby Fox made Megalovania by recording himself poorly humming before recreating it in the EarthBound soundfont. (And what would evolve to the versions in Homestuck, Undertale, and Smash)
This video couldn't have come at a better time. I was flipping through my sketchbook, feeling unmotivated and questioning the purpose of it all. I decided to open TH-cam, and this popped up right when I needed it. Great work!!!
Your section on the generalist effect and "increasing your surface area of ideas" is well put. It is something we see everywhere, including in some of the smartest people throughout history. It is something we see everywhere, including in some of the smartest people throughout history. Even Einstein's theories were less of an individual discovery and more so that Einstein framed what we already knew about physics in a novel way. Alexander von Humboldt--the "father of environmentalism"--is especially inspiring to me as someone seeking a career in environmental engineering. (Not exactly the same field as what he did, but still.)
Glad it resonated with you and thanks for the thoughtful comment! I agree, it’s easy to label one person a genius and move on, but most ideas rely a lot on the ideas that came before them. Good luck on your career path!
I'm an algorithms engineer in fiber optics. I recently came up with an idea for how we can present some results, which was based on and borrowed heavily from the Genshin Optimizer, a free online engine made by a community of minmaxers who play Genshin Impact. Legit, my video game addiction led me to an interesting idea for how to solve something in fiber optics. But the reverse is also true, I can't take off my engineering hat when I do anything else, including playing video games. I once played through the entire first two days of a Stardew Valley game having literally computed the optimal gardening layout, ideal foraging route, and optimal shopping strategy, legit running it through frame perfectly (slowed down on an emulator tho).
Optimizing Stardew Valley like that sounds like a pretty wild experience, but it sounds like you enjoyed the process of it. I really love the example you gave of getting an insight for your work from a Genshin-related piece of software, we never really know where inspiration will hit and I think that's the fun part.
I fully expected this to be a video from a channel with millions of subs. Shocked to see less than 1k! You've earned one more with this one. Incredibly well produced and great script!
I love music, right now working to be a big artist one day, being more specific atm im just producing music, im 19, but since I was like 12 I started learning different topics by myself, I learned amateur graphic design, some marketing, programming, etc. All knowledge is useful
Then it's not a hobby, and don't let anyone convince you that it is. Stick to your purpose and never give up. I started when I was about your age and I wasted the next 10 years with stupid little hobbies like playing video games and having sex. Now I'm close to doing it for a living, but it could've happened a long time ago. Everything I do is with a purpose. I don't call them "hobbies". Hobbies are a waste of time
Excellent video! When it comes to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Cards, I think what Niles is doing is similar to what Todd Herman talks about in the Alter Ego Effect. Where businessmen, athletes etc use objects to "bring out the other side" of themselves (essentially a temporary mindset/personality shift) in a match, business meeting and all so they can win. Like Kobe's Black Mamba.
first of all this video is so well put together but wow i love this topic. we hear so much that having multiple interests or hobbies holds you back from being great at one thing but being great at one thing isn't the only way to be successful or fulfilled!
One thing that gets under my skin when it come to my goals/dreams is that I’m told “it’s just a hobby”, it’s damn near like telling me I’m not gonna achieve it
My experiences in competitive gaming have frequently changed the way I approach my sales management work. Learning more will always help more, regardless of the field
Amazing top quality video. It was surprising when I saw it comes from a channel with less than 1K views. You will become really big my friend. Keep Pushing
i love anyone who spreads the gospel about having hobbies. i grew up having hobbies and the hobbies i had since i was a kid are still my favorite ones. i have expanded my hobbies since and also gained some auxiliary skills over the years. it's great fun. loved the video!
I used to think the benefit of hobbies was purely just to give your brain a 'break' from your main work. Then I began to realize that if you're paying attention you will pick up lessons that you can apply to basically any other area of life. But what this video really showed me is that your brain is working on a subconscious level even when you're not 'actively working' on the thing. And if you never give yourself that break, you're missing out on those 'magical ideas' that seemingly come out of nowhere (when in fact your brain was working on it the entire time). Excellent video Arteri!
I will never forget the pain i felt when my dad told me “You’re a jack of all trades, but master of none” And i have lived thinking that my interests in different fields are simply never going to add up to anything. But it’s so affirming to know that that idea of focusing on one specific hobby can inhibit you and i feel more at ease to try out different things. I learnt so many different skills and now have even picked up muay thai as my new hobby and honestly never thought exercise can improve my life so much (i hate exercise).
Wow, was expecting the view count to be in the 100's of K's! Refreshing take on generalism vs. specialism in the face of a world that neglects the importance of a multi-faceted background. Thank you!
Always happy to see small creators get recognition and this exposure. It's clear a lot of research has been done on this video, enjoyed the flow of it and I definitely plan to revisit it to learn more.
he makes and uploads this vid because: he never gives us up he never lets us down he never runs around and desert us he never makes us cry he never say goodbye he never tells a lie and hurt us (overall, this vid is good)
Wow. How does this dude only have 1k subscribers, such high quality content and amazing editing you are gonna have many more subs one day bro ❤. It’s crazy that I used to think I should cut down on the hobbies I did so I could specialise more, but I found it better that I focused more of my time on the things that I loved like playing cello and table tennis and science. Then the rest were things I’d do if I had more free time (I am young after all) like skateboarding, playing video games and basketball. I’ve found so far that like in the video I have increased my social networks widely from places like my orchestra and table tennis club and In some cases where there’s social events my other hobbies like basketball may prove handy to get more involved and makes it easier to talk to people as we share interests and they also have links to places where I can get more involved with my hobbies. Thank you for this video making me realise that my hobbies a have so much more value and can lead to great success. Keep making these vids bro ❤ I love them 😊
This was so awesome to hear, thanks for sharing your experience! I think it's great that you made time for your hobbies as time went on and that you got to make those memories and find those connections. Glad this video helped to reaffirm some of it for you :) Good luck on your journey!
although I had to allocate more time out of my day to achieve my addictive hobby of badminton (4 hours x3-4 times a week), but it is my motivation in doing daily tasks and not procrastinate + everytime I play my mind is free from the work that I have been doing for the past week
Nurturing hobbies sparks CREATIVITY, reduces stress, and builds SKILLS that translate into career success. Studies show engaging in passions outside work boosts productivity and problem-solving. 💡 Embrace what you LOVE-it could be the hidden key to unlocking your full potential! 🚀
I agree completely with this, but its also important to consider that those with the resources to become successful (richer people) also have more opportunities to pursue hobbies that they want
See this video, figure I’ll give it a go not having seen the creator before, sub within 2 minutes. Damn this is good work! Feels like a breath of fresh air on here!

💯 great summary
More Hobbies = More Ideas = Better Brain = More Success

"increase your surface area of ideas" so well put! what a great video!
Glad you liked it! Will keep the ideas coming

Thanks! Funnily enough I actually use Canva Pro for the majority of it, the rest I make in Davinci Resolve
i always thought having many interests can kinda limit potential
There's also some disadvantages
Your focus is limited, don't take your hobbies too seriously.
When you have limited time, you should focus on what you must.
Don't play video games when you have exam in 1 week
