Ichinojo's Debut in the Makuuchi Division - September 2014 Basho

  • On September 2014, Ichinojo made his debut in the top division of Sumo Wrestling. He climbed up the ranks so fast, his hair have not grown enough to form the traditional chonmage or topknot that sekitori (high rankers) usually wear. It only took Ichinojo less than a year to reach the Makuuchi Division.
    I compiled all of his bouts and made a play-by-play breakdown of each bout. I hope you enjoy and as always thank you for watching! Hakkeyoi!

    Goddamn. I wish I watched sumo during these days. Never realized his debut he beat two ozeki, a yokozuna, and only got runner-up because the final boss was Hakuho. He deserved to win a yusho and I'm glad he was finally able to become champion 🏆

      @barath4545 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Did you also know that this was the first time in 60 years (or so) that a Yokozuna got Kimbochi'd by a rookie Maegashira? (Ie a first-time Makuuchi basho rishiki)
      This makes this such a legendary basho.
      And he was NOT far off getting Hakuho either, just a few moves.

      I remember watching this basho and recalling Ichi playing some mind games with both Kise and Kakuryu. I think the mattas in both bouts were intentional to give the opponent the impression he was anxious to charge forward, which made the henka such a surprise. Kakuryu should have been expecting it though after what happened to Kise.

    Moved up in the ranks so fast he didn't have time to grow his hair out. I love Ichinojo.

    More noteworthy than his 13-2 was that Ichinojo henka'd both an Ozeki AND a Yokuzuna in his very FIRST top-division tournament! Japan hasn't seen such villany since the days of the Ōnin Wars.

    that just shows how strong and skillful hakuho is! ichi just ran trough so many TOP rikishi and nearly no one could even really move him. but then hakuho nearly lifted his 200+ kilo frame like he does it every day....insane...and then the pull that looked so effortlessly, crazy. but its crazy how ichinojo didnt became ozeki pretty early, he was a machine! i mean he still is, but age and injurys just pilling up on him 😔

    Great stuff! I remember Baby Ichi was something else! He rose so fast and didn't even have a top knot yet and he was killing everyone! I love Hakuho met him head on and said let's see what you got big boy! Ichi was star struck but was incredible in his debut.

    I honestly think that if Ichi had stayed at that weight, rather than ending up above 200kg, he'd at least be/have been Ōzeki by now.

    • @simfreak187
      @simfreak187 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      i do believe he just got older and he had some injurys that made him less mobil in the dohyo :/ plus his backpain, as he said, is pretty much there all the time. well he is 200+kg afterall 😅 but just looking at him in the video, it baffles me, that he is not ozeki or even yokozuna 😳 crazy skillfull and fast for his physicue!

  • @rabidstavros77

    An astonishing first performance. Its amazing really that he never rose to at least Ozeki. You hear the reactions to his retirement and you see where the expectations would have been for his career. Glad he got a yusho.

    I hadn't watch sumo since it was on ESPN in the '90s. This was the first basho I had watched since then. I've been a huge Ichinojo fan since then. It's been hard to watch him work through his health issues. I was so happy he finally got a well-deserved yusho the last basho. I hope he gets more.

    Funny looking at the match with Hakuho how much like Hakuho Ochiai looks, even the small, rapid hip movements to break grips and reposition for a push, and than the mawashi grip changing slightly to get a throw. Very excited for Ochiai!

    • @DeclanRK

      Ichinojo never got the left-hand grip. Hakuho is just jockeying for position with his arm inside. Not to mention, Hakuho is a master of sumo technique and the greatest of all time. This was Ichi’s first tournament in the top division, Hakuho had nothing to fear.
