Depstech DS500 Endoscope Borescope unboxing and review

  • I featured a small endoscope a few months ago that I bought from Banggood that connected to a phone or PC. It was fine for what it was but I've now upgraded to the Depstech DS500 self contained, all in one Endoscope or borescope.
It has an inbuilt rechargeable battery (charger cable included, USB C) that has a claim of 7hours run time, a 32GB micro SD card, a 5" HD display and 16.5 feet of semi rigid umbilical leading to a pair of cameras on the end which is only 7.9mm in diameter . One camera can look straight ahead while you can switch to a sideways view, although at a lesser picture quality. When using the hand held device you can take photos of what is displayed in the 5"HD display or in fact record it all to video! There is not a sound option. A few tools are included that can be attached to the camera head such as a magnet or hook, just in case you loose your keys!
For your money you also get a semi hard storage case which should keep all the bits and pieces together and safe.
I like it, and while I won't be using it every day there will certainly be times it will be invaluable.
Keep a look out on Amazon for a discount from the seller and when I bought it there was a hefty 30% voucher that could be used.

    Thanks for the review!
I've had the old school Depstech micro usb cable version for Android (used via their app), I picked up for $25 back in 2016. It's been useful (and still works), but it was a pain at times, being tethered to my phone (which seemed to easily disconnect itself, usually right when I needed it most).
So I pulled the trigger on this one (as opposed to it's main competitor...Teslong).
Have to say I am quite pleased with this unit so far. No more endoscope app creeping around my phone, doing shady crap even though the "permissions" are supposedly off. Or anymore annoying disconnect hassles....
And sorry, I didnt use your link. Apologize for that, but I clear cookies religiously. I did give your vid a 👍, however. Hopefully it helps drive some people here that will use it. Thanks again for your time, brother.

Hi MF, thanks for your feedback. I too had a scope which would connect to a phone and I'd agree it was a pain. This hand held unit is so much better. Thanks for the thumbs up and of course for watching 👍🏽

I got a DepsTech DS500 in the mail today, from Amazon. It and its parts look identical, to the one in this video.
Mine also has split-screen mode, during which one side of the screen shows what the side camera sees while the other side of the screen shows what the front- view camera sees, while both cameras operate at the same time.
To get it to do this, I press the upper left hand button for several seconds, and after the screen shows a view from one of the cameras, I press and hold down this button a second time for a few seconds. This produces the split- screen views from both cameras at the same time.

Hi Ken, that's interesting, I've not got mine to hand at the moment to check. It's possible there has been a firmware upgrade to enable this. Thanks for letting me know and of course for watching 👍🏽

@@MikeMakesIt I thought that I had thrown away its box, but I found it yesterday in a sack full of other things.
I turned on my Depstech DS 500 a few minutes ago, and saw once again that mine does indeed have the split screen feature, with one side of the screen showing the view of the side camera, while at the same time the other half of the screen shows the view of the front facing camera. Both split screen views will also rotate 180° at the same time, by momentarily pressing and releasing the button that has the circular arrow on it.
This button shows the three basic views (front, side, and split screen that shows both views), and also the 180° rotated views for each of these three views, that are available with this endoscope. I simply press and then hold down the button that has the circular arrow on it, during which time the endoscope will change between the basic front, side, and split screen views.
Its black and red box has a lot of different information, on it:
      5" IPS LCD Screen
      FHD + Image Output
      Bluart 2.0 Image Tech
      IP67 Waterproof Probe
      High-Performance Li-Battery
      Semi-Rigid Cable
      Dual 2MP
      5MP Fixed Focus
      5MP+1MP
      8MP Auto Focus
There is no date of manufacture, on either the box or the endoscope, or its owner's manual.
I also found that the camera housing, at the end of its 16.5 foot cable, will get very, very hot if it's adjustable light is left on for any length of time. So I only use its light when I have to, and turn it back off frequently, whenever I'm using the endoscope.

Thanks for a great review. I have an older Depstech camera that is viewed through my phone and it’s served me well. Due to some serious upcoming projects I decided to upgrade. You helped make my choice much easier.

This looks like a proper endoscope Mike! Cca. a month ago I wanted one very badly for car cleaning... I think that’d be a bit OTT though... 😂
When we bought our brand new car at the beginning of year, my friend sat down, straight away dropped and lost something in it, and still can’t find that thingy - this might help... 🤩

Thanks. I was wondering if it was worth it to spend the extra money on the DS580 which is the same device but has a 5MP front camera, but it seems this one is good enough for my needs.

Bravo with back ground music. You didn't play it when you were explaining important points. While probing the chimney, the back ground music was a good choice. I am so sick of back ground music in information videos that sound like what would be heard in a Disco Club....so annoying!

Hi Vipor2022, thanks for the great feedback. I find background music, unless used in the right place, off putting. I tend to use it only on long or speeded up sequences when there is not a need to inform the viewer what's going on. Thanks for watching 👍🏽👍🏽

Take a look at page six, it recaps what I say in the video about the status charge LED.
Basically Flashing blue=low battery, Steady blue= Battery level ok, Red flashing=charging, Steady Red=charged.
I cannot however tell you how long a charge will take as it will depend on the depth of discharge the battery is at. Thanks for watching 👍🏽

Hi Rui, it's not a tool I use everyday but when I have used it I still think its a good quality item for the money and "feels good" if you know what I mean. Sometimes you get an item and it with either look or feel cheap. This is NOT the case with the Depstech DS500. The large display is particularly good. I would certainly buy it again. Tip for TH-cam video makers: have your nails manicured before filming. At least trim and clean your nails. Makes for fewer distractions for the viewers.
Now that THAT is out of the way...... I just got my DS500 and the "manual" doesn't tell the charging procedure. Hence watching this video which was no help in this matter. I've had it plugged in for six hours and the red light on the front of the unit is still on. Does it turn to green when fully charged, or does it stay red?? The unit seems to be of good quality, but the "manual" is worthless.
