- Ahh yes, Fort William. Home to one of the world cup downhill tracks and the famous Top chief which it’s long boardwalk running alongside a cliff. I’m not that great of a rider now however back then I was just starting out. And these tracks are some of the scariest and steepest I had ever seen. If your a novice mountain biker looking to see if Fort William will be too much for you, this video should give a clear understanding of the difficulty of the tracks. This is beginner vs Ben… Nevis (cough, cough).
We’ll Start off with Top Chief as it’s the easiest of the two. The track starts with a casual dirt run before the boardwalk. Pretty easy to start with then holy sh*t look at the cliff. And that turn. I couldn’t do this bit first run down however after doing the track a couple times I could do the whole thing without stopping. Other than waiting for dad of course. After the boardwalk, it’s a bunch of dirt and rocks with little sections of boardwalk scatted about. It does get quite steep and rocky at some parts however if 12-year-old me can ride it. You can ride it. The rest of the track is quite normal and eventually, you’ll make it home in one piece… hopefully.
Now your all-hyped form that last ride you try something a bit more challenging. The downhill track should satisfy. It starts at this little hut, before going onto the trail. You could do this bit with your eyes closed. Then bam gnarly rocks, creek gapes and berms so steep you can’t even ride down them. This track might as well be a walking track.
