a Class 50 on a 10 coach Inter-City set on a Paignton local? I suppose it was filling in after arriving on a long distance working. The kind of thing they could do in those days. Why return only to Totnes though? So it could go direct to Laira?

I believe the Paignton service is to London Waterloo so a 10 coach inter city would be used, the carriage stock was cleaned at Exeter then deployed for its next service from Paignton, Totnes would have been a temporary stabling point. They use to change stock Waterloo to Exeter St David ,forming a later Paignton service as well as the other way round just because the cleaning service was at Exeter along with an Engine maintenance facility. In the days I was down there Plymouth Laira handled all points south to Penzance along with the ever increasing HST fleet.R

The Totnes working had me baffled too Andrei. I was using the 1986 edition of loco hauled travel to work out the movements, so I can guarantee that it was a booked and rostered working. You may well be spot on with your suggestion that it allowed the train to go direct Laira.
