    Two fabulous musicians. I think it's so disrespectful to make music a competitive thing. This one is better than that one and so on. Appreciate each one for what they do. Music is one of the greatest gifts that God has given us. Let's embrace the gift and cherish it not cheapen it with foolish comparisons.

    • @jamessmith-zk4co
      @jamessmith-zk4co 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MorbidManMusic Well Sir, if that's what you did and how you feel about it so be it. I believe God gives us gifts and it's up to us to cultivate what he's given us. Some will never be as good as Tom Brady, Lebron James , Michael Jordan, Jeff Berlin, Marcus Miller , Jaco or who ever,no matter how much "hard work or study they put in". I can remember when I was young how some student didnt have to study or work nearly as hard as I did in school yet they would get perfect scores on exams or play their musical pieces flawlessly. Thats a gift. I'm sure you've encountered the same. I'd like to hear what you do. Based on how you're talking, you must be one of the world's greatest🤔.

      Stop attaching god to things you can't explain. MorbidMan can explain how it is done and for someone like you of such "faith", why can't you just believe that focus and determination is the most likely reason for success? On earth we can prove some methods and no one for centuries can find any actual proof of god…..oh how special is an entity that can be described with a pronoun like "he"? If you seek a religious salvation you'd better start looking inward and start admitting that you don't know and faith is for fools. That is how one learns and grows. Perhaps you have a more difficult time learning then others because you won't admit that you don't know everything leaving your mind closed to finding out that you have things to learn in the first place. Maybe you should practice more instead of just believing you didn't get blessed enough.

      BassToTheFaceMan I'm quite pleased with my abilities. I think you missed my point completely. We can believe in or not believe in whatever we choose. My initial comment was about making everything into a competition instead of appreciating the beauty in music.

    It's my opinion that a musician who approaches music as a competition (Marcus is better vs. Jeff is better) has a truly juvenile perspective on music. Yes, Miles Davis, and Aretha Franklin have hired Marcus to produce and play on their records but to claim that this somehow makes him "better" than Jeff Berlin is ridiculous. Jeff Berlin and Marcus Miller are great musicians in their own right.

      So if jeff beck, and a first day guitar player were playing together, who would be better for most of it,..? Yeah, the gap closes as time goes on, but is still there. On the other side.. Ctual music is not a competition .. learning is...

  • @juliusbradley7401
    @juliusbradley7401 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    These guys sound great together. Being musical is the gift, being good at it takes work. Competition makes you better if you accept the challenge. Music is about communication and expression. That's exactly what I see here.

    berlin runs rings around all these "Jam" players, the man has knowledge. although he looks like he gives lectures on fly fishing.

    • @swangonzalez4797
      @swangonzalez4797 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      He did it to Jaco as well ....I have yet to find a guy he didn't smoke somewhat in a jam. Jeff is always relaxed while the other guys always seem to make an effort to push the envelope. Jeff is just cruising and slaying it. He is on the level of a Classical musician playing jazz.

    • @normanhirschfeld3823
      @normanhirschfeld3823 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@swangonzalez4797 When it comes to Jaco we will never know. It's obvious that he was outta shape when he jammed with Jeff. Not only had he not practiced regularly for a long time by then but he was also battling mentall illness and substance abuse. If you had put Jeff up against the Jaco of 76' it would have been a totally different outcome. He wouldn't have smoked him, that's for sure. It's even debatable if he did it in the actual jam if you listen to the complete audio recording.

    It’s like you can hear the whole history of jazz in Marcus’ solo.

  • @bassplayer9432
    @bassplayer9432 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I love how they never step on each other's toes when they're accompanying whovever's soloing. That's often what happens with a lot of these "bass duets" where the whole thing quickly turns into a chopfest. Here instead we have a real musical dialogue all throughout at the highest level of improvisation.

  • @davenatale850
    @davenatale850 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I was pleasantly surprised to hear these great bass players work together. After Jaco brought the electric fretless into the limelight, Berlin was the next guy for me anyway. Long time ago! Marcus also showed me something different than I'm used to hearing from him. Very cool all around.

    Great to hear two totally different styles of players... and to hear Marcus not slap (although he's the best at it.) Berlin's technique is obviously stronger as he never does anything but finger playing, but you gotta love Marcus' feel and attack. Great stuff... thanks for posting!

  • @peoplesrepublicofi7367

    Marcus is capable of many things...we may not like everything he does but he's a truly great, great musician. His lines in this jam are every bit as good as (or better than) Berlin's and more imaginative IMHO. I hate comparing people but, when people like Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Aretha Franklin (to name a few) come knocking on Berlin's door to produce (and play bass) on their records...we can have a real discussion. Until then.

      peoplesrepublic ofi considering Miles is dead I'd say that's a lost cause. Although Berlin has played with Jaco, and let's not mention guys like Danny Gottlieb, Lieberman and other prominent figures. So to say he hasn't recorded or played with greats is short sighted, to say the least.

    Agreed, music isn't a competitive sport-if it were, Jeff Berlin would be a gold medalist! He's played as a sideman a lot of the fusion greats (Holdsworth, Lavitz, Bruford, etc.) in addition to his own records, but can play a lot of other styes.

    They're playing around with some substitutions, but that's the basic chord structure.

    Once again Marcus shows his moves. What Marcus is a true bass player cause he holds the bottom down and his slapping his what he dose best.I love when he slaps and the funk he brings to bass playing.He has different styles in his arsonal thats why you either love or hate him but you can't take nothing away from him. That's why he's more respected over seas and not in the States. Just like the Beatles the were love cause they were from another country but all they played were blues? Go figure?

    the only problem with your comment is the style is not called slap "eg larry graham . thumping and plucking i have doing this since 1974. slapping is done on the upright bass. why is it you guys try to change something that has all ready been invented Larry graham clearly states how he conceived this concept. no disrespect to any one I just want everybody to learn !
