I was passing through Arkansas about a year and a half ago, when this corner lot caught my eye. I could tell that there was a sidewalk at this house and it was almost completely covered to the point even a well trained eye would not notice. That is my favorite type of crazy job to take on. Without hesitation I hopped out of my truck to knock on the door to see if I could get permission. A woman answered the door and I confirmed that she was the owner and she did give me the go ahead.
This job took two days and whenever you see this type of job just know that it is BRUTAL on your back but that is what it is. I don't think there is any easier way to do this type of job without tearing up the concrete or lawn to a larger degree. I know, I know, watching this, you may think to yourself that it would be easier if I used a shovel or it would have been cleaner or less work. I just want to put that idea to rest for you. As someone that has done this several times I would say that I am a man with a qualified opinion. Not to say your opinion doesn't matter I am just saying that I have done this.....A LOT. So I will lay out the pros and cons for you. Let's start with the idea that using a shovel is better. While I agree it can appear to leave a cleaner finished quality, the reality is that if I shovel the sidewalk it will come off in large chunks and then I have to proceed to pick those chunks up and remove them from the property. And just for context; soil is very heavy. A cubic yard of soil weighs around 2100 lbs but can weigh more when it is wet. So let's say that it shovels easy...even though on jobs like this it almost never does because you have grass roots growing in every crack of the sidewalk. Well on a job like this I would have to haul off somewhere in the range of 4,000 - 8,000 lbs of soil. Now google says, Currently, the average car is about 2,600 pounds. I don't know about you but working the simple math in my head; I say NO to that one.
So let's look at the option of using the power washer to hydro excavate. That's a real term by the way.
What Is Hydro Excavation? Hydro excavation is a soil removing service. Instead of mechanical tools, the process uses pressurized water to create a dirt slurry. Hydrovac equipment can then vacuum the slurry to reveal deeper layers of the ground below. Now I don't have a hydro vac and in this application it's not needed. I can just blast the soil on to the turf.
Let's address a few comments about using this method.
IT MAKES A MESS: I agree, but only for the short term. The soil that comes off of the sidewalk is blasted evenly over the lawn. This is great because it means that nothing has to be removed from the property. The soil will then dry out and be fully dispersed when the lawn is mowed or wash down in to the lawn when it rains.
Typically the property looks drastically better after it dries out and in 1 to 2 weeks you can't tell that anything was ever put on the lawn.
The second concern with this that I see a lot is "Oh NO.. you put weeds in the lawn". this one is almost painful to read. Common sense would say that the grass, turf, weeds etc.. that is growing on the sidewalk is the same thing growing in the lawn. Meaning that it doesn't matter. Literally nothing changed. lol
Probably the biggest concern is "OH no what a waste of water" or " that's not free because they have to pay thousands of dollars on the water bill." That one is ABSOLUTELY Laughable.
So let's address wasting water. This is not California or a dessert. This is Arkansas and it is sitting on top of one of the largest aquifers in North America. This means that water is plentiful and CHEAP.
Here is some google info on the Ozark aquifer located in west-central Arkansas. Wells in the aquifer can produce between 50-100 gallons per minute (gal/min), but some can produce as much as 600 gal/min.
Also for the person that has only bought water at the gas station in a bottle they sell water at your house by the THOUSAND GALLONS not the ounce. THIS MEANS IF YOU REFILL THAT BOTTLE WITH TAP WATER FROM YOUR HOUSE IT COST YOU A FRACTION OF A FRACTION OF A PENNY.
So let's do a math problem and put our answers in the comments. This should be fun.
The power washer uses 4 gallons of water a minute and I run it 5 hours, 2 days in a row at this property. In this location, water is $3.34 per 1000 gallons. How many gallons of water did I use and how much did it cost?
The best method for Clean up is Angel Soft. If you're looking for a clean wipe this is what I use. Here is a link amzn.to/3SfbWyZ

I have seen so many videos of people cleaning up these sidewalks and you often end up with clean, but busted up sidewalks, which the owner would have thought of as their property for decades. I am often surprised more people don't get upset. Which is a shame because of all the hard work!

Where I’ve lived (different states throughout the US), homeowners are required to maintain access to the sidewalks. Possibly even repairs. Not sure how the homeowner got away with this for so long. It’s intended for public use. Especially important for children and disabled to use to navigate the streets safely.

Doing a job that big using water leaves it looking a bit ruff for awhile. But as it drys and the grass perks up and fills in it will look great. Maybe they weren't happy at how it looked right after it was done. People don't always realize that it may look worse before it looks better. Also if you're hooked up to their water it could cause a water bill that they aren't prepared for if they're financially limited.

A few years ago I was doing some yard work for my neighbor (and yes it was for free of course!) and I found sidewalk that was covered with a good 6 inch deep lawn. I started cutting it out and when I got done with an about 5ft x5ft patch I went up to her door to tell her what I was doing and she freaked out! She absolutely did not want her sidewalk exposed-the city had never fined her and it had been covered for many decades. I patched the sod back over her sidewalk, took my wheel barrel and brought soil over to level it all out and I planted fresh seed. I babied it all summer and by fall it was back to the way she wanted it. What can you do. 🙂
