{TrueSound}™ Deafening PW Power! Heavy Martinair MD-11 ROCKET Takeoff from Miami

  • It's been more than a year since the last Martinair MD-11 left us. We decided it was time for another video to remember these legendary trijets. This is a shortened version of our tribute video which was uploaded some time ago... (continue reading)
    Personal words from Brandon (known as BJG in video descriptions): "Before Horizon was officially established as a three-man TH-cam team, I used to go plane-spotting for fun. It started in elementary school. On that very first spotting trip with my parents, sometime in 2011, the first takeoff I ever saw from El Dorado Furniture at Miami International Airport was a fully-loaded Martinair MD-11. The ground shook as those three PW4000s spooled up to a thunderous roar at takeoff power. Ever since then, the MD-11, especially Martinair's MD-11's, have been very special to me. It remains my favorite airplane to this day."
    The first takeoff in this video was indeed the last time a Martinair MD-11 would lift off the ground, and it is one of the most emotional events we've ever filmed. That last MD-11 of Martinair's seven-ship fleet flew directly to the Mojave graveyard and would never fly again.
    The night footage is from three years ago, and even with its low quality and shakiness, it brings us back to the glory days when cargo operations were bustling. The last takeoff in this video almost wasn't filmed since we were literally getting in the car to leave when we heard the sound of PW engines starting up... The rest is history.
    Miami certainly isn't Amsterdam, but it was the closest thing to it with Martinair. The official airline page even shared our footage and photographs back in the old days. But today, the Western U cargo terminal at Miami seems empty, and the sight of Martinair's big red tails is only a memory...

      I was born in 1988 so never really experienced or remember the whole Tri-jet era, bt the DC-10, L1011, and MD-11 have always been about the most beautiful large aircraft I've seen or heard of. :)

      I missed them while they were here. Sometimes technology removes the soul from things. Look no further than this video.

      Heheh glad you liked the intro! Thank you so much for commenting! The MD-11 is still the loudest civil aircraft we've documented from this angle. Louder than the 727!

    Beautiful!!!! The MD-11 along with the original DC-10 has always been my sentimental favorite airliner/ airplane because back in the early 1970s when the DC-10 first came out, the then Douglas Aircraft plant was located in Long Beach, CA about 30 minutes from my home. Many times on the weekends we would drive there and look at the DC-10s in various stages of production. Once in a while, one would take off or land from a test flight. Unfortunately when the MD-11 began production, I had moved further away so I wasn't able to do the same with it. However, I did see the Martinair MD-11 when it came into LAX. Great memories for sure. Thank you for your post.

    BEAUTIFUL video again, guys! Enjoyed very much and loved all the info with the video :-) This is a plane from an Airline we share with loving memories! I was lucky to fly in the late 90s with one of these awesome birds when Martinair was a normal Airline. It's one of my all time favourite airliners/cargoplanes! Thanks for sharing this and yes, Miami was their 2nd home. Beautiful light there, much more beautiful than in often shitty weather Amsterdam ;-) lol

    This is an awesome and rather touching video! I completely understand how you feel about the magnificent MD-11! I loved that beast as well and there was no other one like her! Just watching them takeoff was absolutely fabulous and amazing! I also know how you felt about those last planes being flown off to the Mojave aircraft graveyard. What a crying shame! But, as they say, everything has to come to an end sometime. But why did it have to be them? I will miss them dearly as they graced both the runways and skies like no other aircraft did! As was mentioned at the end of this video,gone but not forgotten! You guys did an excellent job as difficult as it may have been. If it were me, I would have the same amount of difficulty filming this video.

    • @ilikerio
      @ilikerio  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the amazing comment! The MD-11 is quite a piece of engineering, and we certainly miss seeing the big red tails parked here at MIA... Even after nearly 2 years, it's still tough to get used to. Sadly the airlines can't afford to keep less fuel-efficient aircraft in service. Even the 747 is fading away. All we can do is look forward to newer and safer aircraft in the future!

    Is the smoke from the PW engines from water injection for increased takeoff power for short takeoffs.

    • @ilikerio
      @ilikerio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Water injection is only used on some low-bypass engines. These are high-bypass.

      Horizon Productions SFL: I've seen smoke from those PW engines on 747-400 take offs too, but not from the comparable RR and GE engines used on the wide bodies.

    I've worked around jets for 20+ years...this is not true audio. The bass EQ is way higher than normal...especially during the intro and takeoff.

    • @ilikerio
      @ilikerio  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the feedback! The windscreen we use on the microphone admittedly muffles the sound and makes it seem more bass-focused. However, *TrueSound* refers to our unique approach to documenting aviation without leveling the audio. It's unacceptable by professional standards but it reflects the real life sound since the quiet remains quiet and the loud remains loud.
