This video came just in time. I am growing Okra for the first time in my garden. I still haven't planted it yet though. I have transplants, so I want to wait till it's a little further along in May so it's warmer. I'm in NJ zone 7a. Thanks for the tips! I was hoping for your grandma's recipe too.

Ah, watched the whole thing. That bed looks amazing! There are lot of amazing okra recipes in Indian culture too, I’m primarily growing to make “okra masala” and “kurkuri bhindi (crunchy okra)” We get them here in stores too but it’s $4/lb so I stick to frozen, which aren’t as yummy. Look forward to watching the next video!! Great narrative as always.

Very timely, I just put my okra seed in the ground yesterday here in zone 8a Alabama. We have had an actual cool Spring here this year so I've held off on planting. Usually it goes in the same time as tomato starts on Good friday weekend.

Great! So glad to see you planting Clemson Spineless, a great Carolina okra! Okra is always my fallback crop, if everything else fails, the okra is always there as a backup. It grows like a weed in my southern swamp and doesn't require good soil or fertilizer or water or any sort of care at all. If you are up north, have you looked into breeding your own variety of okra that is short-season and adapted to cooler temps? You might be able to find some varieties of okra that produce quicker, and then select and save seed from there. If you don't have space in the ground in a south-facing warm sunny area, you could always plant okra in large black 10, 15, or 20 gallon pots (fabric pot grow bags are great) and they will heat up quickly. Okra seed can take a long time to germinate, sometimes a month or more from direct seed if temps aren't warm. Best of luck, happy okra growing! Okra is an amazing survival crop! cheers

We get about 20 to 30 pods and flowers daily from 80 plants: red and long green. We also harvest the leaves, but chop them finely and blanch them because they are otherwise tough. We have come up with innovative ways to use it because it's almost too much for two people. I include the chopped pods, plus leaves and flowers it as primary ingredients in veggie patties (along with flax / chia meal, rolled oats, buckwheat flour, lentils, chickpeas, water). And I have started using a puree of the pods in soda bread. It works well because the mucilage helps capture the bubbles needed for bread making.
The okra plants are highly productive over a long season, drought resistant, and they have few pests that cause any real problems. I call the flowers Venus Bee Traps because bumble bees get intoxicated down in there and the flowers close in the afternoon, occasionally with a bee stuck inside. When I pick closed flowers, sometimes there's a startling buzz as I squeeze the base to pick it. So I have to Free the Bee. They seem pissed and ecstatic at the same time upon release. It's a dangerous business but somebody has to do it. The cats absolutely refuse.

Actually a sharp knife is much more effective for harvesting okra. We grow okra in our garden year round :). Also as it is heirloom variety you can keep the mature/non-edible pods in the plant to get fully matured, and you can save those seeds for next year.

Have you heard of making “coffee” with roasted okra seed? Maybe that would be a way to use seeds from pods that are too tough. I’ve purchased some okra called Abigails coffee okra, but I’ve read an article or 2 about using the seeds from okra (not specifically this variety) to make an okra coffee. I’ll let you know what I think when I try it.

If you bought the shortest and cheapest tomato cages you could find(3ft. tall?), then wrap 18" tall chicken wire around the cage, your seedlings would be protected from rabbits and ground hogs. One okra plant per cage. Place the cages side by side, or in groupings of 3-4 in the sunniest parts of the yard. This will free up some of the space in your larger beds. Just a thought.
