Eating Lady Finger regularly can help control cholesterol levels and keep the heart-healthy. Okra has been found to have lectin, a type of protein that prevents human cancer cells' growth. It contains Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Zinc, which can help in improving eye health. Thanks for uploading this video. Very good info.

Lectin is bad for health, recently I learned Orkra has high oxalate, which will cause stones.

I just started gardening this year and so far okra has been the most satisfying. 4-5 days from flower to harvest, it’s crazy how fast it grows.

@@suryalatha2551 as far as I can tell, they like hot, and keep them watered. I’m in Florida and we planted around September. I’m betting late spring will be good too. Like I said, we just started this year, so I’m still in the experimental phase of learning.

I live in Texas and okra is taylor made for Texas climate.
There are a few okra varieties that you can allow the pods to grow up to 16 inches and they will still be tender (Louisiana Long Pod) but the Clemson Spinless is the best tasting in my opinion.

Out of all the plants I grow I must say I enjoy growing the okra plant. As you stated and I agree it does not attract many insects. This year I planted my okra in a raised garden bed. The spacing was not the best, but being close together the leaves of the okra create a very nice shade and I have noticed I do not have to water the plants as much like I did in years past. I live in Texas so that is a huge plus for my okra plants.

Please look into alfalfa hay mulching. One of the benefits is that, this will greatly reduce the watering. And it needs to be deep mulching, with 2 or 3 inches I believe.

Central Arkansas, we grow lots of okra. Mostly heirloom burgundy, and Clemson spineless. We eat it raw, primarily. Most our pods we pick are between 4inches to 10 inches, in the case we for got a few for a day or 2 too long. Even the big ones are generally not stringy as long as we have kept the plants well watered. You are so right, they do LOVE water, however are quite adaptable. Our stalks are like treetrunks by the end of the season and I utilize them either Shredded and out back into the garden or I dry them and make small border fences with them.
Thank you for your videos. Have a blessed, bountiful season!

I tried growing okra in the mountains of Costa Rica and it wasn't happy. A friend at the beach in the Pacific side took my seeds and they grew 6 or 7 feet tall and produced enough for everyone who wanted it. My friend gave me a huge basket full when I visited, more than all my plants grew up in the mountains.
Now I'm in NC and hope to plant okra tomorrow, even though it's a little late maybe.

Okra does well directly sowed in warm soil. I'm in Zone 6B (Louisville) and direct sow in late May to early June. They sprout and grow quickly, basically into a tree in these parts. By mid-summer, I'll start getting pods galore, and that's just from a few plants.
