I attended Wodapalooza SoCal. It was a great experience. The workout outcomes were electrifying and unexpected. I even enjoyed watching the masters compete. Passersby were also attracted to vendor village. Folks were playing volleyball, even the border patrol were either chatting or getting a workout in with weighted vest. Hotels and restaurants all around. And good amount of parking. It was a great time.

This was a great event! All the meet & greets with athletes were a lot of fun! We had the VIP package which was amazing - great food choices & drinks etc. Even though it was a competition for a good amount of money, all the athletes looked like they really did have a good time! Seeing them work together to strategize etc was awesome! Can't beat SoCal weather - beautiful mornings, sunny afternoons and cool evenings. Caught several of the other events (not just Tyr Cup) and they were great to watch as well.

A couple things to work on (not necessarily negatives). They need to improve the lighting at night to make it broadcast quality. This sort of competition would work well as a packaged event to put on tv but no tv network would touch the night events due to the low lighting.
The other thing would be how does this format go when you have more than 2 teams? It was fun to watch and easier to follow than any team comps I've seen since the invitational but that was likely because there was only 2 teams and we knew all the athletes so well. Hopefully they can start playing around with this format and see if would work with an expanded field.

I liked the TYR Cup a lot more than I thought I would. Definitely could have made some of the workouts more suspenseful or added more teams, but a great first stab at this format. And Reps Ahead was a really fun surprise. The knockout style is clever.
The only "downside" I found compared to Miami WZA was that SoCal WZA felt more like a local comp + the TYR Cup. My husband and I just found ourselves killing so much more time at SoCal than Miami. Which, if you know that going into the weekend, it's not a bad thing (as Hiller mentioned, for some it's a positive) because you can plan non-Crossfit activities during the day. And there is literally a beach right there.
I also loved watching the adaptive athletes live at Miami, but they had the Adaptive Games the same weekend as SoCal, so what can you do?

  • @rodm49
    @rodm49 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    The Format was great!!!

As one of the male athletes said at the end...while fun, the format could use some work. Perhaps athletes should all have to be the same number of events (not more than +1). Maybe the organizers need to do what they need to do to make reasonably equitable teams going into it.
Btw, I liked the "All hands on deck" event (minus the judging errors)...truly a team event, incorporated some strategy, out-of-the box elements, and utilized the natural terrain and scenery (ie, the beach).

The only negative point I would raise was the time for us Europeans. The 3 events shows were starting at 1 or 2 AM. And if you wanted to play in the Heat 1 App, you had to do it in advance without knowing the teams that would take part in the workouts. Or you had to stay awake all night...
So having a Team World competing but for us, their supporters, to not be able to see them compete live was a bit disappointing

When you look into the stands and there might be 100 people there I don't know how it could be better than Friday night lights in Miami where you have to fight for a spot to get into the bleachers. I am sure the venue was nice but the fans and the vibe in Miami are untouched.

It’s odd. I find that the athletes at the CrossFit games where the biggest title is on the line are stressed and complaining about everything and professionalism. Then at smaller events where the title is smaller they don’t care as much and just have fun. I’m not really sure it’s CrossFit vs the other event organizers. I think it’s more about what is at stake. You can have way more fun at a small event with less to lose than at the Olympics. Look at the Carson days where it was very “fly by the seat of your pants.” People generally like it. Now that the Games has $300k at stake and is the biggest event for the year, everyone has less fun and more negative experiences. Idk just seems interesting to me.

I was there … sat/sun. My first time attending WZA since it was only 4.5 hrs away.
Ummm … it was ok. Fun but not like WOW!
    A few pro/cons:
    - The venue didn’t have any maps/informative signage up on Saturday morning after being there for two days already
    - free to enter the separate vendor villages (overpowered by cold plunge vendors)
    - seemed quite easy to innocently enter the beach stage without a ticket/stamped hand/wrist band
    - the tyr cup seemed like a silly exhibition of the athletes kinda trying and Tia acting like a freaking dictator oops, I meant team capt.
Location was perfect 👌🏻 and the weather couldn’t have been better.

The events were long and got boring, but the varying format was cool for teams. But there needs to be a minimum of 3 teams. I just never really got into the competition. Wonder if the athletes had to be positive since they were Tyr athletes. There needed to be more lighting, as the stream looked dark and flat. And Pat getting an award for whining and making excuses!? Tia was the MVP for the weekend.

"MVP" or "Character" are two entirely different things. There was a lot of "confusion" on the part of the organizers on what the trophy was (FOR). One second the lady''s speech says that it's about (honoring) *character* , and then next second she dubs it the "MVP" trophy. We get that you wanted to come up with a trophy named after Lazar, but you need to figure out what the trophy is FOR. Not doing so put Pat in an awkward, and yet emotional position.
Is it "SPIRIT of the TYR/Lazar Cup"?, "The Lazar Fan Favorite CrossFitter trophy"?, "The Most Valuable Person in making this a great event"?, "The Most Valuable Player in contributing to their team's win trophy...as an athlete? coach? athlete+coach"? FCS, figure it out folks.

The vendor village at the games was not necessarily really far away from the stadium, but the line to get in was ridiculous. They asked for tickets for the first time this year and the line was probably over a quarter mile for the entire time that I was there. The event was great, for it being the first year, it was pretty awesome. Watching the elites compete as teams was so different and entertaining. I think the best part was that the events kept moving quickly, not much waiting around. The weather was great, the vibes were great. Only thing I can complain about was that I had vip tickets for all weekend but didn’t feel like I got much more than general admission. As a matter of fact, probably could’ve gotten into the event without any ticket in general. Overall I really enjoyed it, will definitely continue attending.
