I'd like to see a "finding backpacking gear in unexpected places" video. Harbor freight, Hardware stores, grocery stores, a fabric shop and so on. It would be a great way to talk budget / last minute gear as well as go into how a lot of the tiny garage grown gear companies got started.
Harbor Freight's little $3 LED flashlights are awesome. I bought a bunch and gave them to all the kids in my scout troop who never bring a flashlight camping.
I tried the Vaucluse ventilation piece on a backpacking trip to Cumberland island that was quite hot. I had the same experience. I had to be super careful taking it off and putting it on. I did like having the pack off my back a bit but when it comes undone it would stab me in the back.

Do a google search for National Forests in your state. See if any have a Wilderness. Google that wilderness for backpacking. The National Forest web site has a plethora of general information how these topics. For instance I live in Washington state. I took a road atlas and I chose Ohio. Never been to that state. They have Wayne National Forest. So I googled Wayne National Forest and one of the items that had a hyper link to was hiking. Clicked on that and I found Wildcat Hollow trail 17.5 miles for backpacking. Less than 5 minutes I already have a destination to look into. Call the Athens District ranger station will help gather more information about the trail. This also gives me something to google which 10 seconds later I had a list of sites that had information including Alltrails. 3 things to keep in mind. Difficulty, mileage, and weather. If you're new to backpacking keep your difficulty low and mileage low (4-6 miles) until you're ready to try more challenging terrain and mileage. Don't jump from 4 to 15 miles. Try 4 then maybe 8 then 12 miles and so on. Weather is something that can't be controlled so you need to learn how to deal with inclement weather. Basically timing is one way of dealing with it. If you can time the weather so it is coming in when you are back at the trailhead is one way of dealing with it but still get out (may not be out as long as you like but you got out). At the same time not have to deal with it.
Mushroom picking tip: cut off the base of the stem with dirt before you bag it up, so you don't get dirt all over your morels! It's probably best practice to just cut/pinch the stem at ground level to pick it, leaving the base in place, but long-term studies haven't really shown one method to be better than the other at this point (that I'm aware of). Nice find, they're my favorite.
Agree. Once that dirt or sand gets in the mushroom cap it’s very difficult to clean it out and you will be eating the grit. Great to find that mushroom!
Per our mycologists, it's best practice to pick the whole mushroom including the base because in many mushrooms (such as Amanitas) the main features for distinguishing between an edible and poisonous species are on the base (it probably doesn't matter in morels though). Source: we Czechs are probably the most passionate mushroom foragers in the world, it's pretty much a national sport - and we forage an insane variety of species including several Amanitas (very tasty!) so articles by mycologists are pretty much a constant presence in the media during summer and fall. Agree with cleaning off the dirt right away, that's gonna be impossible to get off after it's been carried around for two days.
Hi Miranda! 66YO newbie backpacker here that just found your channel. Gosh Darn, you are entertaining, enlightening, AND SOOOO enthusiastic. "eee"! Seriously, I am taking your tips and suggestions to heart as I assemble my "schtuff" to go on my first trip with my son and grandsons soon. Thanks so much for the hard work you put into your shows!
It should be noted that the weight on the Flextail Zero pump does NOT include either the battery or valve adapter. They've completely plastered the marketing material with the 1.2oz (35g) weight despite only be able to achieve that as little more that a paperweight in your pack lol. I believe it's about the same weight as their tiny pump x (model with out the lantern) by the time it's got a battery in it. Albeit with a more convenient form factor, but a much higher price tag.
I'm not sure Darwin was thinking, "Hey guys, let's make a really cute pot," but I guess that's what he got 😂 I like that pot because of the wooden handle on the lid. I have a Toakes 750ml, and I'm always forgetting to pull that teeny little tab on the lid before I boil my water, so the wooden one would be helpful. I like the bail too, I do occasionally cook over a fire. Maybe Rainer, you should make Miranda a treasure map to her bear canister next time you hide it on her 🤣
That pot is the one designed by Darwin. The wooden handle on the lid is definitely the stand out feature, and the lid fits most standard pots, since they're all designed around the typical stove diameter. So even if I take one of my other pots, I always take that lid with me.
Fantastic video! The UL sandals are amazing for the weight, don't use them for water crossings, just for camp or for mid day stops to air out your feet. The zero pump however doesn't have enough air pressure to fully inflate an air mattress if you like it firm, so you have to add a few breaths in. The tiny2x air pump solves that, and also has a long lasting lantern.
The back ventilation pack comes with a few pieces of Velcro that you are supposed to use to attach it to your straps. Before I figured that out it fell off of me too. Once I started using the Velcro I really started enjoying it.
For those pillows, I find them great but only if you partially inflate, wrap your jacket around it and then also use your buff to hold it all together. Then they are great.
I want to say I dig the show... and that thanks to you every time I go hiking people think Im insane... when I cross a bridge, I have the uncontrollable need to say "bridge bridge bridge bridge" 🤣🤣🤣
Definitely do another video like this 👍. Beautiful hike and camp spot. You brightened up my hard day, thanks 😊. I’m disabled now and so miss hiking and camping. My last big trip was over 25 years ago on 7 days river rafting in Utah on the Green river. I was only two weeks out of the hospital after leaving ama. I’ve done some more hiking, horseback riding and biking day trips but long ago. It was a tick bite 30 miles from home here in north Texas that took everything away. Be safe.
After seeing the RovyVon mini pocket flashlight on another video I purchased one for my husband and myself. It lives in my pocket everyday. Big thumbs up on that one. We highly recommend it.
I wanted to say how much I'm enjoying your videos. I'm not an "outdoorsy" person but have started taking my 2 year old on short hikes. Next stop car camping, then hopefully backpacking (might wait a few years for that one). I guess that's what condo living + mom guilt will do, motivate you to get your butts outside as much as possible lol
I hope your kid learns to love going outside. Mine decided she no longer had any interest at age 10 or 11. I didn’t start until she was 5 or 6. I was too sick before that. Edit to add that up until then we had lots of fun. ❤
My boyfriend and I literally drove around the burns in our area looking for morels. Didn't find any. Then we got to our established campsite for the night and I looked down while leveling our camper and my partner had stepped on a morel and there was one more just chillin beside the smooshed one waiting to be picked 😂

I read this and was like "no wonder I didnt watch this on release" yeah it's currently 21:50 at my place... That means this uploaded 18:00 or 6pm for you non metric people 😂...
My first run with mayflies I didn't enjoy them just found them to not have enough between me and the ground. On my second run I modified them by cutting out a piece of craft foam and adhering that as an insole if you would. It's made them incredibly comfortable and they are still a ton lighter than my zero sandals.
“The difference between a good time and a bad time is the noise you make.” This was definitely a "good time" noise! PS, I am NOT a backpacker, nor a hiker - heck, I barely get out of my house! But I love to be entertained! Thanks to Miranda, Rainer, Abby and the team for bringing it consistently.
WOW thank you so, so much!! Thrilled to be able to entertain you 🥰 thanks for being here and supporting our channel - we can't do it without people like you!!
As another very sweaty human being, I swear by packs with ventilation. I'm sure you know that they make packs with built in ventilation, which is usually mesh and far more breathable than the plastic one. But I will say devices like that are great because they open. Up so many more possibilities for packs.
Would definitely love to see another video like with even funkier equipment! And thank you guys, this channel has inspired me to get back to hiking and such after being away from it for a few years.
Try the zero pump at home. I don't like fully inflating my Nemo Tensor Insulated LW, but the zero pump didn't get close to that pressure. I went back to the 2X pump.
I just got home from my first backpacking trip in 2+ decades. Spent 2 nights in the Lost Creek Wilderness in Colorado. Had a great time, though definitely overpacked on the camera gear I brought with me. Thanks Miranda for helping me get outside for a solo backpacking trip! The Cnoc bag and bottle worked amazing for filtering water. Definitely one of my favorite pieces of gear that I picked up from watching your channel
Yeah definitely agree! Powerful little light!! I was so impressed watching Miranda use it. I immediately ordered that Brautigam spork as well. Absolutely love it!
@@RainerGolden I tested the fire maple 600 mL petrol this last weekend high up in the San Juans and it was awesome. Not sure if you've tested that out yet but worth a shot. How do you all like the Nemo Hornet Elite 1p?
You guys are absolutely fantastic!!! @Miranda - if only 2% of the humans on this planet had your personality the world would forever be at peace. @Ranier - You are the best at what you do. Perfect! Regarding more "Funky Gear" videos - Hell YES!! That how we find the good stuff. Happy trails, Bubba
That pot will give you options if the fuel canister runs out before you get back. The pot, a fixed blade knife, a lighter, and rope will get you out of a lot of jams.
The RovyVon light is definitely a winner. There is a little learning curve with the button combinations to turn it on and cycle through the modes, but it's a solid piece of gear in my kit. I tried to like the Mayfly sandals, but the lack of real traction was a deal breaker for me. I have one of those Brautigam spoons (not the spork) on my GGG wishlist. I've already got a decent spoon, but if family members are interested in getting me a gift, they can get me one of those. I've tried those toothpaste tabs and they are not for me. I love the concept, but my teeth didn't feel clean after using them. I also use a folding travel toothbrush that I like better than those weird ones from GGG.
As others have stated, that pot was designed and produced by Darwin of Darwin on the Trail. He had function in mind, not cuteness, but it might not fit your use case.
Me too! It’s used extensively in campaign signs.. and Grant Peterson used it to make bicycle fenders and handlebar bags on his bicycles using recycled campaign signs 😂
I have a Rovyvon flashlight i keep on my keyring. I use it a lot and love it! If you aren't using it on a keyring, I recommend keeping it on a zippered pocket.
Haven't scrolled through the gazillion comments here, so maybe this was said. Aren't those funky camp sandals made out of corrugated plastic, not cardboard? You could try skiing in them. You sure know how to put the fun in your day!
One of my fave videos ever. I love how genuine ya'll are. Those camp shoes are ridiculous...my tevos are my water crossing shoes and a back up pair of shoes so worth the weight!
I have a rovyvon Aurora t9 that is made out of full copper. I carry it every day as a machinist. Came home last week late one night, tired and threw pants in washer. I was mortified the next day to see my flashlight has gone through the washer and dryer. Scared to death I let it sit out in open air and the next day it fired right up.... These things are bulletproof!
If you go funkier, get it two days in advance so you can really think about what you need to change to try it to it's full potential, maybe even trying it overnight at home and then on the trail. Fun video!
I think you should try gir mini spoon . I'm a professional cook by trade and I found this spoon for work and it's perfect silicone spoon for backpacking . It won't scratch up the pot if your eating ' the heat doesn't transfer to the spoon ' it's great and scraping the edges and it doesn't weight much
Great Video! This is one of my favorite forests in Washington. :) Our family does a lot of foraging. When collecting morels, you always want to slice them off from the base. Due to all of their "brainy" texture any sand or dirt still attached will all end up in all the deep creases that are near impossible to clean out. Best to alway just do a clean slice from the base so you aren't shaking in all the dirt and bugs with the mushrooms before you get home. Hope you had a chance to enjoy it though! They are delicious!
OK. I watch this channel to have fun. Miranda is fun. Rainer is an incredible shooter and editor. You two make a good team. My backpacking days are in the past, motorcycles and motorcycle camping are my jam. Thanks for making me smile. And since I'm a guy I love flashlights. I bought one in this film. I have many. I like stuff that blows up too. I'm a guy.
Nice to see that you're still alive and you did not accidentally pick up the false version and yes there is a false version of that mushroom Glad you didn't grab that one Awesome little happy video as always take care young lady and have a good day and tell Ryan I said hello I think that was his name your video editor I have problems with names but anyways take care of you too
Life hack!!!! If you are find a edible mushroom put it in a mesh bag on your back so there spores can spend so there MORE next year!!!! More mushroom more happy meals!!!!! I do this every time i backpack but haven't got a morel yet, have found golden chanterelle though
Where i live in Appalachia, we were always taught to NOT pull the morel from the ground but use a pocket knife to cut right above the ground and to leave the root bulb
Late to the party, but yes please, more funky. Just want to say that your smile and laugh are infectious and it brings me great joy to watch your videos! Rovyvon Aurora lights are great small lights and the addition of USB-C for the charge ports is a welcome improvement (I’m a big flashlight geek)
Your video about Decathlon came up as a recommendation for me earlier today, and I’ve been binge watching them since. After watching your health video, I hope you manage to find ways to keep making excellent content

Good morning I have only been camping for a week last year in a tent and bought all my lcamping gear most of it Nemo from watching you. ❤ thank you very much.. I do hike a lot and love it. My question is I heard you say that you had a little thing that you carry on your backpack that shows the temperature can you tell me which product that is and where to get it? Enjoy your journey in life and keep sharing a little laughter..
I like the pour spout on the evolve pot. I used a ball-peen hammer to modify my toaks pot to have the same type of spout and achieved excellent results. I shaped the bail to keep the bail upright when boiling water on standard stove.
Late to the party here, but I loved this video, and would love to see you try funkier gear. Who better to do so than a funky lady (in the most bestest way of course!)! So identified with you looking for that bear can. That is me all the time!
37:44 Yeah... you should not pour hot water into the bag that is over your lap. I did that once. The bag was not as stiff, it folded over, and I had boiling hot water on my leg. Despite cooling the burn in the river, I had second degree burns.

From what I've seen, the bad ones don't have the same kind of cavitation as the real ones. Similar shape but they look more like melted plastic.

Any chance of doing a video of just how to find a place to backpack. Like how to find where you're allowed to camp.
Couples different avenues depending on where you live.

Rovyvon is the best item in the box by far. Absolutely love that thing. Has replaced all my headlamps for 1-2 day trips
@@skidrx Love my Firemaple pot. It is now the only one I use and pick stoves that will fit it.
Love the rusted root reference!!
Happy trails,
Bubba
That pot will give you options if the fuel canister runs out before you get back. The pot, a fixed blade knife, a lighter, and rope will get you out of a lot of jams.
More funky gear tries! I love learning new cool ways to make life easier while supporting small business
I’d like to see you try out the lightest and sketchiest backpacking tent you can find that is truly a tent and not a tarp!
Miranda keeps saying the shoes are corrugated cardboard, and I keep wanting to yell at the TV that is coroplast (corrugated plastic).
At the gv?
@@9melissal TV 🤣 typo
@@sturmykins ohhh 🤣
😂 I didn’t know the term coroplast.
Me too! It’s used extensively in campaign signs.. and Grant Peterson used it to make bicycle fenders and handlebar bags on his bicycles using recycled campaign signs 😂
I agree. I didn’t think that stuff was very funky. I think you can go WAY funkier. Do it!
And as a music teacher, yes I can confirm the noise that you make can make things way more fun! LOL love that!
The little "jig" Miranda did at the end made me think of the elevator dance from Gangnam Style but if we were looking from the backside
The pink or red things on the leafs are a type of leaf gall usually formed by mites or aphids to live in and feed off while maturing.
One of my fave videos ever. I love how genuine ya'll are. Those camp shoes are ridiculous...my tevos are my water crossing shoes and a back up pair of shoes so worth the weight!
I love that pump. Works great to start campfires too.
Fun video!
That sky, the moon! And Miranda air-planing her new spoon around... no wonder she gets long so well with Jayne!
Also, I didn't recognize the pot as Darwin's design (thanks comments section) it's like a throwback to when I was a kid, things had more cute details!
@@amywert8088 One of Miranda’s favorite sayings is, “Buy it ‘cause it’s cute!” So I hope folks didn’t interpret her saying it’s cute as a criticism. 😂
@@RainerGolden Lol I HOPE not! That would be silly... :)
I'm a guy.
I love the amount of dust/pollen that came off the rear car door when you closed it. 🤧
Nice to see that you're still alive and you did not accidentally pick up the false version and yes there is a false version of that mushroom Glad you didn't grab that one
Awesome little happy video as always take care young lady and have a good day and tell Ryan I said hello I think that was his name your video editor I have problems with names but anyways take care of you too
Those sandals look treacherous to walk in 😅
I've had all of these items on a wishlist from GGG so I'm excited to see them in action!
Oh, yeah! Let's always unpack funky stuff and get Miranda's reaction!
Life hack!!!! If you are find a edible mushroom put it in a mesh bag on your back so there spores can spend so there MORE next year!!!! More mushroom more happy meals!!!!!
I do this every time i backpack but haven't got a morel yet, have found golden chanterelle though
GGG making ultralight accessible with a $1.99 pillow 💜
My vote is definitely go for wilder. The more wild, the better.
A resounding yes to more funky gear videos. Or as someone else already said, gear from unexpected stores.
Yes, to all the funky gear videos. 😁
I am loving that you are catering for us metric people
Your video about Decathlon came up as a recommendation for me earlier today, and I’ve been binge watching them since. After watching your health video, I hope you manage to find ways to keep making excellent content
🎉❤ I love your content! You always put a smile on our faces. Thank you for these product reviews and taking the chance on them so we know how they work!
Your videos never disappoint. Please, go wilder! 😊
LOVE LOVE LOVE Rusted Root! The soundtrack to some of the best fun ive had in the woods.
“More hiking!” ❤️
The shoes “I don’t know that I love them… I accept them”😂
i like sleeping on my side with my blanket bundled between my arms so my shoulders dont collaspse on itself and bought that pillow 3 years ago. Love it. 😂
I love your unboxing videos!! I am always looking for innovative gear and would really enjoy seeing some of the weird stuff in the wild! More please!
Good morning I have only been camping for a week last year in a tent and bought all my lcamping gear most of it Nemo from watching you. ❤
thank you very much.. I do hike a lot and love it.
My question is I heard you say that you had a little thing that you carry on your backpack that shows the temperature can you tell me which product that is and where to get it?
Enjoy your journey in life and keep sharing a little laughter..
I’ve had that tiny flashlight for like 6 or 7 years. I keep it on my keyring, it’s the bomb
The pot is from Darwin on the trails company.
Yes please, test more funky gear. Also if you could comment on your go to coffee regiment that would also be very cool! Love your channel!
This was more entertaining than I thought it would be. Love my Rovyvon flashlight, too!
Bring on the funky!
37:44 Yeah... you should not pour hot water into the bag that is over your lap. I did that once. The bag was not as stiff, it folded over, and I had boiling hot water on my leg. Despite cooling the burn in the river, I had second degree burns.
Love it! I'd love to see additional funky gear, but please don't go so funky that the items simply aren't practical too
