I really enjoyed the video, but the editing was a bit choppy and fast. That made it a little hard to watch but the content was excellent and I enjoyed seeing and hearing your roommates. Seems like you all eat pretty well!
As for exploring a new country,my guess is that you might be going to Indonesia perhaps Java or Bali or maybe even Sri Lanka. Let me know if I got it right. You have already been to Cambodia and I’m not sure that Laos or Myanmar would be safe. if you went to Japan, you would definitely have sticker shock. It’s one of the most expensive places I have ever traveled.

Nikki you must have read my mind!!! I just got home from work (I work for Hospice) and thought man I need to tell him that while I will never be able to afford the postcard club, I'll always follow. Btw..I also go to grocery to learn about the people and what life is like locally! Such a clever young man!!

Hey Niki, you can't get real sour cream in Canadian supermarkets either. We hve to shop at the Polish or Romanian supermarket. i had a bit of a chuckle when you talked about it being so good and real.
The green vegetable you asked about is called chayote, cho cho, Christophene, Mirleton.... and probably has more names since it originated in Mesoamerica. It grows on a vine. Very productive when it's happy.

14:02 Carrots: One strange difference of those carrots compared to ours in the UK is that those have more of the green roots left on. Our carrots usually have no roots at all, although one _can_ buy carrots with roots, but they are sold as something special, something extra healthy. And more expensive!

Having been to 40 countries in the last 30+ years, I think it's great for young people to travel across Asia. There are so many different places to explore and costs are low enough so you get really good value for the money. Other continents are interesting too, but maybe not as safe or inexpensive as Asia.

Yup Asia is home to me. I've been here a decade now. When I left China I went back to Europe for a bit but life had moved on. I couldn't imagine living anywere else. Europe is fine for holidays. And as we know Georgia is too tense right now.Myanmar gives me that Balkans/Georgia feeling whilst being in Aisa. I just came back from Bangkok last night. That place is a nightmare. I only go there for medical and picking up stuff. I upload every week ever since I opened my channel even though I work full time as a kinder teacher and am nearly 60 ha ha!

"cải xoong" is called watercress in English :D
it's slightly bitter and very crunchy, we usually cook it into soup with a bit of ground pork called "canh cải xoong" (watercress soup), it's my favorite :D
thanks for taking us with you guys on a grocery shopping trip in Vietnam 👍👍

    • @ChrissieSM

looks so amazing! I really appreciate your idea to share a postcard with the regular commenters. Best of luck to everyone. It was nice to see a little comparison between the supermarkets and the fresh market. I understand why a lot of locals choose the fresh market and if you adapt your shopping style it seems like the best way to go, even if it isnt what we are used to.. Also, turning your visa run into a 10-14 day trip seems like an absolute win, getting two tasks done at once, a video, and visa renewal. it would let you see a lot of different places for just a bit more cost in time+money than hopping the border and back. Cant wait to see where you go.

It has different taste, some people like pasteurized milk than others.

Su Su is chayote in English (and Spanish). It originated from southern Mexico and Central America. My parents are from Mexico but in the central north where they don’t eat it but I’ve seen when eating in southern Mexico. It’s probably more popular in Asia though which is funny to me
Not sure how it’s pronounced as I’ve only heard it pronounced in Spanish and I only see them in the US in Mexican or Asian grocery stores. The word comes from a Mexican indigenous language

In most of the west Su su or chayote squash are generally known as ''Choko''.
My local Aldi in Australia now stocks Rivet Vietnamese beer!
PS It's interesting that Vietnam uses the English Alphabet when all surrounding countries dont.

Vietnam formerly used another alphabet (similar to Chinese characters) then they changed to the Latin/ English alphabet when they were colonized by France. (or that's what my Viet mom told me, don't know how true or if she got the dates wrong)

Su su in French is called chouchou (almost the same pronunciation), or chayotte in the French overseas islands.

I guess that's where the name choko comes from. That's what Australians know it as.

Expensive lately yes. However, in defence: great fresh produce at local farmers markets, farm stands outside city limits selling surplus havest and fresh eggs, coop stores also carry lots of fresh local produce. West coast USA ....Cheers.😊

Su Su in Australia is Choko, available in any supermarket. My guess 'Choko' is derived from the french name mentioned in another post.

I love how you’re exploring the local markets and supermarkets, it’s like a treasure hunt for unique ingredients. Do you find that the prices or quality of ingredients differ significantly between the two?

Really good advice to go grocery shopping to learn more about the area you are in! Even in the US the stores and items vary from place to place. I would love to have a postcard from you, Niki! ❤

In your next video where you talk about your daily life in Vietnam and why you like living in Asia, explain some of the differences between Asia/Vietnam and Georgia. In Vietnam, how do you get by with the language? In Georgia you probably don't have any language issues.

Keep in mind though the minimum wage in Vietnam is under $1 an hour - imagine working for two hours to buy ten eggs

You are so lucky to have such good housemates and such good cooks too! I enjoy your trips to get groceries. It's very interesting to see what's different and what's the same in other countries/cultures. Duck eggs aren't something normally seen in the grocery stores where I live in the southern part of the US. My daughter collects postcards and it would be so cool to get one from Asia. One of my friends brought some postcards for her when he went home to Serbia for a visit. It made her day.
