How Visible Are Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) To The Naked Eye?

This is a question we hear quite often as many people incorrectly claim that northern lights can only be captured by camera...
This video shows a 'moderately' strong Aurora Borealis during an Arctic Freediving week, almost exactly as the eye would see it and in fact this capture is slightly darker than the real thing (no special effects or editing 🙂).
On some nights these magical lights can be so intense, it illuminates the scenery below in a bright green light and you can see incredible detail and colors in the lights themselves.

I travelled to Iceland & was very lucky witnessing the Northern lights! They hadn’t been spotted for some weeks so obviously I felt privileged. To say I felt short changed is an understatement!! Of course seeing them dance across they sky was magical. I couldn’t understand why there wasn’t any colour? Where was the green & purple like what you see in nature programs? What I can’t understand is why isn’t it publicised more that you require a special exposure on your camera. Stupidly I only had my iphone camera with me. I was truly upset knowing I witnessed such an amazing spiritual event like this & never recorded the true colours of the Northern Lights
I went out on a tour bus to see the lights, they took us into the island where us was pitch black. It’s an odd feeling standing in the dark waiting to see them. I got a little annoyed because a lot of Chinese people were busy chatting/laughing noisily amongst themselves. Im not a spiritual person but I truly felt “at one with the earth” I took myself right away from the tourists which I shouldn’t of done for safety reasons! I feel a moment lime what I experienced is nothing more than peaceful & eerie in a good way.
I feel privileged to have seen them & it’s a memory that will stay with me forever
