This week’s tutorial shows you How To EQ Your Reverbs!
Have you ever mixed a vocal to sound great & found an awesome sounding reverb to go with it - only to find that there is still some muddiness in the mix? Most people don’t realize that even a great-sounding reverb most likely still needs a little EQing. That’s because every song is different & the frequencies that consume each individual varies from song to song. Luckily with a little EQing, you can make any reverb sound amazing in the mix & sit perfectly with all the other tracks in the session.

I think notching things out on the reverb return.
    Is not a good idea.
Creates a lot of weird phrasing
The reverb channel should sound very natural because it’s supposed to be making it sound natural
    Simple low-cut is enough
If you need to notch out resonant frequencies, do it at source…
As for pre-EQ on the reverb, that’s always a good idea.
Just don’t overdo it and certainly no notches
At the end of the day the rules are
    there are no rules
    Only good practice

That before and after comparison revealed a big difference in overall clarity. Great track by the way. Thanks for sharing.

I would say using a post instead of the build in eq, gives you more control. So you can ab compare each step. Using the built in eq would mean you cannot switch on/off reverb or the build in eq seperately i guess. Whereby im not absolutely sure if pro q can do that maybe non the less.

That is a big reason why I used a different EQ than the built in one. Pro-R’s EQ probably gives the most control, but that reverb didn’t exist when I first started mixing & the reverbs I was using back then that had the post-EQ built in were fairly limited. Even still with Pro-R, I like the control a separate EQ can give me, like more bands, dynamic EQ, L/R, & M/S, etc.

As a starting home studio musician, seeing you work with a vocal eq demonstration gave me something to consider when I mix my recorded clarinet sessions! Solid explanation, thanks!
