Ravel Morrison was unbelievable as a youth player. So unbelievable that many thought he was going to have a career that rivals the best of them.

Sadly, if you know about these things, Ravel is highly likely sociopathic (given his troubled upbringing). The impulsivity, inexplicable self -sabotage, inability to consistently listen are great indicators. The point is having genius talent doesn't mean you automatically you have a fantastic mentality. Ravel is who he is and it just needs to be understood / accepted - good or bad.
It's easy to say "he had the talent but lacked the discipline" in cases like these and move on, feeling right about yourself. But people forget that troubled youth growing up in tough environments need help and guidance. It was particularly sad to hear he was diagnosed with ADHD but was refused treatment for fear of antidoping tests.
I agree. Maybe a dedicated mentor could have made the difference.

Having been pressured and forced to not be medicated for my severe ADHD during my teen years, this brought me to tears. I always knew I saw something in Ravel, and with stories like this I am just happy to know that he wasn't entirely abandoned, and can still contribute to the wider football world. Bravo man, great video.

Honestly, I've been watching you for about 18 months now and I have to say that you are my favourite football channel. You manage to make well researched, video essays, while still keeping some personality. It's a crime that you still have way less subs than Thogden.
I remember being so excited about him at the time-I was a kid too so probably couldn't understand some of the stories that came out about him. That interview with Rio was really moving. You could feel the humility in his words.

It's always nice if you can just point to circumstances to deflect responsibilities, but at the same time, you dismiss the fact that you are part of the circumstances and therefore do have an impact aswell.
I’ve met kids from the same estate he came from, you could almost say they were one step behind in evolution to being human beings with no concept of right or wrong. Very sad

It’s always a combination of nature and nurture. He wasn’t solely a victim of his circumstances. Players all over the world that have very unstable difficult upbringings
Some of it has to be personality and moral reasoning.
Reminds me of Marcus Edwards from Tottenham Hotspurs. Marcus says he's move to Portugal saved his life and career, I feel like Ravel needed something similar in a move away from England pretty early on

Ravel Morrison is the classic story of talent and no control, discipline ergo 12 years of car crash after car crash...obvs no one took him aside, thing is he probably didn't listen even if they did...Ballotelli comes to mind.
He did occur to me, though Balotelli seemed more like a wilful child. But, huge waste of talent there and inability to even last as long with a team as Mourinho. To Balo's credit, he did provide us with far more examples of his talent in the major leagues than did Ravel.
I disagree about being the product of your environment. I grew up in one of the worst boroughs of East London at the time and I've made a successful, respectful life of myself without getting into trouble. Plenty of opportunities presented themselves to cause trouble, but at the end of the day, you're the one that makes the choices
I'm with you there. But you're still a product- you just made good choices. There are reasons for why you made those choice (seeing people doing things you disagreed with/agreed with).

Simone Biles has ADHD and has been on meds since childhood.
But maybe football has standards other than those of intl gymnastics (FIG) or Olympics?

Ravel got called up to Jamaica, and he initially did well, however, just like his club career, he fell out of favour and has not been called up in about a year.

The background thing is a cop out. Some of the best players to have kicked a ball, have come from slums/favelas, where there are shootings, drug gangs. War torn areas of Africa or South America. Stop making excuses for him.
Sad. Personally, would love have his talents with the since I practiced for years and never came close to pro debut and moved on with my life professionally. I made peace long time ago and still absolutely love football, but always wished I had that spark that these kids had.

One of the most random signings my club ( Atlas Guadalajara) has ever gotten in 2016 and he played well when he was given minutes I remember a good game of his against pumas UNAM and Puebla fc. But I believe the language barrier made it hard for him to adapt to Mexico.
Just went back down the rabbit hole you can see him score some nice goals during his time in mex against Toluca and Querétaro. Gotta admit when I was younger I used to think he would be out ginac since he was English and came from the United academy. Wish he could’ve stayed longer in Mexico

As a football fan first and foremost it makes me so incredibly sad that he got to showcase his immense ability. As someone with severe adhd i can say that im lucky that i had good people around me in my teen years, without them i would have probably ended up either dead or incarcerated. Having a diagnosis like adhd is never an excuse for whatever shit you do but it sure explains alot of why you end up in situations that a "normal" person would understand is bad. Try to remember that its after all is a disability, its not a character defect and although you can treat the symptoms with medication and therapy the core issue is something you are born with :)
Despite all his troubles Ravel Morrison has made a lot of money from football. I just checked his networth and it shows $90 million dollars. Some successful players have not made that much money at 30 years old. He should live confortably with that amount of money.
He probably just wasn't as good as people thought he was, just a championship player at best. Alex Ferguson also thought Bebe was the next Ronaldo, and Bellion the next Henry.

I did not know he had ADHD... wow. makes sense. This kid was a wild one. Always in the papers for the worst reasons. If someone has a mental issue and is stopped from taking them because of doping rules is sickening.

Ravel is a warning to players suffering from ADHD. Ravel was never allowed to meditate his condition. It would mark him positive for doping. The FA refused to make any allowance for Ravel. Manchester United pleaded his case for years. Ravel went unmedicated since 14 years old and it showed in his career. Untreated ADHD and a large salary, at a young age, is a deadly cocktail.
Imo The English FA fail and continues to fail players with ADHD!

oh man that's so sad. Honestly players need a better health network, especially when they are dealing with mental health problems. Here in Germany we got caught completely off guard when Robert Enke committed suicide due to his depression.
One day scouts and managers will start to value things like hard work, determination, bravery etc as the MAIN qualities before even caring what the player can do with his feet. If Morrison had any of those qualities he’d have done a lot better

Of course the main (and i believe the only problem) is his attitude. But when speaking about it we have to consider the circumstances that he grew up with.

He's neurodivergent and wasn't given the care he needed, of course that doesn't excuse his actions but as somebody who also has ADHD but wasn't diagnosed as a child because I was 'Too smart' and as a teen because the doctor said 'You don't want to be on medication or anything' and have subsequently made some really stupid impulsive decisions as an adult largely because of this I can empathise with Ravel, shit back when he was at United and West Ham I used to heavily criticise him for wasting his talents, little did I know he was just like me.

As someone who is ADHD, I find the club forbidding him to take medication inexcusable. ADHD medication are typically CNS stimulants and are basically all on the antidoping agency list but those with ADHD can get therapeutic exemption for the medication. It is not a matter of if there are banned substances but the failure of the club to submit paperwork for the proper usage of the substances

I wish Ravel well but this is a "Man Utd" story.
The ADHD and the background of poverty can explain some of the behaviour, but assaulting his girlfriend and threatening witnesses with bodily harm is rather behind the pale. There are numerous stories of kids growing up in the barrio or the projects or overcoming the misfit between cognitive diversities and the ethos of the modern system. One thing missing was hearing from him. Did he ever even feign contrition?
That said, it is a tragic story, and the fact that ADHD meds are not allowed seems pretty ridiculous. I know that many of the ADHD drugs are counter-intuitively stimulants there should have been a way to get pharmaceutical treatment without violating WADA.

Used to see Ravel round Warrington, one time just randomly running through traffic on a rainy day when he was technically injured when contracted to a team in Mexico.
The guy is just... A total unknown. There's talk of him having an IQ that is technically rated as "stupid" and below 50. There's talk of him having oppositional defiance and Autism/ADHD. He seems to have straightened himself out now but he was robbing phones from senior players in the changing rooms and all sorts at our absolute pomp under Fergie. He was barely raised nevermind being raised right... Ritalin definitely is not a PED though and is a clear exception, that's a false story.
One thing is for sure, at 14/5/6 he was above Pogba, Keane, Evans, Lingard, all of them. By a mile.
As someone with adhd who in high school was just starting to get medication, I was explicitly told by doctors that I should give up on the prospect of going to university, because the environment would be too challenging for me to succeed in. They were almost right but I have since graduated, although I need to get back on the medication for the other reasons stated in this video and more lol. I feel for this guy, I wonder if he would've been allowed the medication, what kind of player he would have been.
