Having been pressured and forced to not be medicated for my severe ADHD during my teen years, this brought me to tears. I always knew I saw something in Ravel, and with stories like this I am just happy to know that he wasn't entirely abandoned, and can still contribute to the wider football world. Sadly, if you know about these things, Ravel is highly likely sociopathic (given his troubled upbringing). The impulsivity, inexplicable self -sabotage, inability to consistently listen are great indicators. The point is having genius talent doesn't mean you automatically you have a fantastic mentality. Ravel is who he is and it just needs to be understood / accepted - good or bad.

He did occur to me, though Balotelli seemed more like a wilful child. But, huge waste of talent there and inability to even last as long with a team as Mourinho. To Balo's credit, he did provide us with far more examples of his talent in the major leagues than did Ravel.

He's neurodivergent and wasn't given the care he needed, of course that doesn't excuse his actions but as somebody who also has ADHD but wasn't diagnosed as a child because I was 'Too smart' and as a teen because the doctor said 'You don't want to be on medication or anything' and have subsequently made some really stupid impulsive decisions as an adult largely because of this I can empathise with Ravel, shit back when he was at United and West Ham I used to heavily criticise him for wasting his talents, little did I know he was just like me.

I grew up in one of the worst boroughs of East London at the time and I've made a successful, respectful life of myself without getting into trouble. Plenty of opportunities presented themselves to cause trouble, but at the end of the day, you're the one that makes the choices

One of the most random signings my club ( Atlas Guadalajara) has ever gotten in 2016 and he played well when he was given minutes I remember a good game of his against pumas UNAM and Puebla fc. But I believe the language barrier made it hard for him to adapt to Mexico.
Just went back down the rabbit hole you can see him score some nice goals during his time in mex against Toluca and Querétaro. Gotta admit when I was younger I used to think he would be out ginac since he was English and came from the United academy. Wish he could’ve stayed longer in Mexico
As a football fan first and foremost it makes me so incredibly sad that he got to showcase his immense ability. As someone with severe adhd i can say that im lucky that i had good people around me in my teen years, without them i would have probably ended up either dead or incarcerated. Having a diagnosis like adhd is never an excuse for whatever shit you do but it sure explains alot of why you end up in situations that a "normal" person would understand is bad. Try to remember that its after all is a disability, its not a character defect and although you can treat the symptoms with medication and therapy the core issue is something you are born with :)
There is an exemption for athletes to take necessary meds with a doctor’s note. Simone Biles has ADHD and has been on meds since childhood. Used to see Ravel round Warrington, one time just randomly running through traffic on a rainy day when he was technically injured when contracted to a team in Mexico. The guy is just... A total unknown. There's talk of him having an IQ that is technically rated as "stupid" and below 50. There's talk of him having oppositional defiance and Autism/ADHD. He seems to have straightened himself out now but he was robbing phones from senior players in the changing rooms and all sorts at our absolute pomp under Fergie. He was barely raised nevermind being raised right... Ritalin definitely is not a PED though and is a clear exception, that's a false story. The ADHD and the background of poverty can explain some of the behaviour, but assaulting his girlfriend and threatening witnesses with bodily harm is rather behind the pale. There are numerous stories of kids growing up in the barrio or the projects or overcoming the misfit between cognitive diversities and the ethos of the modern system. One thing missing was hearing from him. Did he ever even feign contrition? That said, it is a tragic story, and the fact that ADHD meds are not allowed seems pretty ridiculous. I know that many of the ADHD drugs are counter-intuitively stimulants there should have been a way to get pharmaceutical treatment without violating WADA.

Sad. Personally, would love have his talents with the since I practiced for years and never came close to pro debut and moved on with my life professionally. I made peace long time ago and still absolutely love football, but always wished I had that spark that these kids had.

Ravel is a warning to players suffering from ADHD. Ravel was never allowed to meditate his condition. It would mark him positive for doping. The FA refused to make any allowance for Ravel. Manchester United pleaded his case for years. Ravel went unmedicated since 14 years old and it showed in his career. Untreated ADHD and a large salary, at a young age, is a deadly cocktail.

One day scouts and managers will start to value things like hard work, determination, bravery etc as the MAIN qualities before even caring what the player can do with his feet. If Morrison had any of those qualities he’d have done a lot better
I did not know he had ADHD... wow. makes sense. This kid was a wild one. Always in the papers for the worst reasons. If someone has a mental issue and is stopped from taking them because of doping rules is sickening.
The background thing is a cop out. Some of the best players to have kicked a ball, have come from slums/favelas, where there are shootings, drug gangs. War torn areas of Africa or South America. Stop making excuses for him.

There are numerous stories of kids growing up in the barrio or the projects or overcoming the misfit between cognitive diversities and the ethos of the modern system. One thing missing was hearing from him. Did he ever even feign contrition?
That said, it is a tragic story, and the fact that ADHD meds are not allowed seems pretty ridiculous. I know that many of the ADHD drugs are counter-intuitively stimulants there should have been a way to get pharmaceutical treatment without violating WADA.

Countless players from South America have come from the favelas, barrios and so forth.
African players have come from war torn countries and had to face persecution, death and war.
European players have come from extreme poverty, famine and violence.
The list could go on. Only in England and America do we make excuses for athletes who chose “lifestyle” over discipline.
