Peter talking about entire ethnicities as large as Han Chinese or even German (he said that on another ocassion) vanishing within a century makes me chuckle. Like it will even take more a century for all the people alive today to die out and as far as I'm aware, new children of those ehtnicities are still being born today even if the fertility rates may be at historic lows.

I listen to him because he offers easily digested insights into international facts and factors. That said, I have still to agree with any of his conclusions. Like you, I feel mitigating circumstances get jettisoned when he is shaping conclusions.

The Chinese have a history of famine so that might accelerate things or they could release another Covid bug.

I would argue that China having a smaller now very educated population now having more resources per individual, will be ok, needing less imports of food and oil. They will adjust to any new circumstances as have every human group has ever done.

Lets play devil's advocate for a moment. So China is destined to have a significantly smaller population. Is that necessarily bad? While they may not have quite be a rich nation, certainly a large number of Chinese have become wealthy. That allows them to educate their kids (look at any US university....), which equips them to operate further up the food chain. So in the end, do they really need as large a population to be viable or even successful? Maybe there can be something to be said about quality over quantity.

Half the population sharing current wealth means a doubling of net worth.
