We've had great luck with Chicken bait. Last year we, my brother and I, caught over 1000 catfish using it in our highly over fished local lake. Our area frowns on cut bait but we are able to catch shad through the summer and have had some luck with those as well. The shad was really hit and miss on bites but I also had my best day, 28 catfish, using shad when they wouldn't touch the chicken. So we tend to pack a variety of stuff to toss but our go to has been cherry kool aid or strawberry jello soaked chicken.

I have been using strawberry chicken for years and it works great. If you are fishing from a boat it's fantastic but there is a negative side. If you are fishing from the bank turtles also love it and you will catch a lot of them. So, i shy away from strawberry jello chicken when i fish from the bank.

Just a little tip about Jell-O, use the sugar free type it's not sticky. I also use grape flavor too. Chicken breast and/or hotdogs both work well. Great Video too! This bait usually always works when I take the kiddos!

Since chicken became pretty much a mainstay in my bait rotation a few years back, both my kayak and bank fishing tackle boxes have a small bottle of hand sanitizer in them. Different baits are available in their respective regions but since chicken happens to be “universal,” I appreciate you sharing this information given it’s part of your livelihood. Now, if I could only find a catfish bait that wasn’t also a favorite of snapping turtles…

I just found your channel a couple weeks ago and had never used a Santee rig. I've used rigs that were pretty much the same but not that exact rig. I can't use cut bait because I fish the Arkansas River and 90% of what is gonna eat that is a gar or a turtle.
I wanted to thank you for your videos man. I WRECKED them this evening using your Santee setup with the circle hook and that strawberry Jello chicken. That is the first bait I've used on the river that outfished redworms.

@@DieterMelhorn I know that the jello and chicken works perfectly but what is your opinion on adding garlic powder to the mixture to add some extra scent? I have had success with my homemade baits adding garlic powder it seemed that the bait I added the garlic powder seemed to gotten more frequent attention and hits/bites then the same bait without garlic powder. I've been studying on the Jello chicken bait watching yours and others videos on here but I have never used it before I know people around me that have used it and had success. I'm going to try it and also do my own little experiment using not only strawberry but try other flavors and add garlic powder to some of the strawberry. Always add the garlic powder, or the oil from that minced garlic in a jar. I tend to throw a cherry or tropical punch Kool-Aid for the color. My mom always said it made it look like blood and that made the fish excited. No idea how valid that theory is but it seems to work

I do this regularly. Muddy water, plain chicken works much better as the catfish are pretty blind. The white meat stands out better and they have an easier time finding it, similarly to white blades on a spinner for bass in muddy water. Jello all the way when the water is stained to clear. Been doing this for a couple years now.

One of the best catfish baits I've ever used is eel. We'd start our trotlines with cut bluegill from our pond and after we caught a few eels the bite would really pick up, and eel has incredibly tough skin so they don't get knocked off the hook.

Great videos and info!!! Is the chicken fresh, or does it need to be a bit ripe to be effective? We always used chicken liver that was slightly aged 😁 to my wife’s disapproval being left in the fridge😂, does the foul taste attract catfish more? Chicken liver doesn’t stay on the hook very well, especially if we’re bank fishing and need to cast out, always listening for that double splash to know if your bait came off the hook, started using cut up chicken breast and a single piece caught several nice catfish before a new piece was needed to be put on hook. Just kept freezing and thawing out the chicken for each trip out, never tried the strawberry koolaid, gonna give that a try this weekend. Again, enjoy the videos, very helpful!

Have you tried using 1/2 chicken breast or a whole chicken breast for a “big bait”?

Always used cut chicken breast....but use sugar free Kool aid strawberry flavor ....but add sprinkle garlic and then just sit it in the sun in a cooler let er sit day or 3 .....take some exam gloves so you don't get that smell on your hands ....but I assume the jello would work too

I remember when I first started using chicken in the Santee copper system many years ago. All the guides laughed at me and snurrled there noses.

Now several of the guides not only use it, but at least one got mad at me for making. a video about "giving the secret away"

I'm 75 I've been an avid catfish fanatic all my life and I can tell you for certain that when they hungery they will eat ANYTHING. JUST THE OTHER DAY I was at my favorite dock eating on lunch break. Digging thru snack fridge looking for something to use for bait. The only thing in there was three dried up hotdogs and on slice of dried up pepperoni pizza I caught 8 keepers on hot dogs and when they were gone I tore off chunks of pizza caught bigger cats off the pizza

I use baby wipes for cleaning my hands after baiting my hooks every time. How do you feel about that? Please let me know

I just got in and cleaned nine channel cats. I caught them with strawberry jello chicken.

Never used the jello but the garlic powder seems to work pretty good. Sometimes the plain chicken even does better. Does attract channel cats more than cut bait. Im not a channel cat fan but never a guarantee of what you will catch on any bait. With that said, i keep what im looking for and throw back anything else.

Question tried this and seemed to make the chicken almost to mushy to use

I'm just getting into the catfish scene, and I've been using hotdogs so far with a lot of success. I've heard about chicken and jello chicken, we just happen to have a decent amount of old chicken in the freezer that's on it's way to freezer burn city. I'm going to give this a shot!

We only have Flatheads & Channel Cats in Michigan. Have you tried live bait vs chicken for Flatheads? Like you say test it out. My GF hates me using live Bluegills. But, if a perch or Bluegill swallows the hook she doesn't mind me using it for cut bait.

Tested it myself a couple of years ago and had pretty good luck with it as well. Although, I have found they are either all over it or I'm getting zero bites. Really no in between.
