Thank you for doing this tribute to this singer, R.I.P. Marianne Faithful. I'm glad that you went with this song as it's one of her most popular and the lyrics are somewhat suitable for this sad occasion.
Goodnight Marianne. If you wanted more, then theres a fair bit to choose from. She had quite a number of albums that range from this sort of stuff, to much darker more Rock orientated things, plus poetry and spoken word. I'd heavily recommend her comeback album, Broken English, where her voice is aged and very different, some would argue ruined. There's also at least one covers album, and she did stuff with anyone from Brian Eno, to Metallica, to Nick Cave. Its a weirdly eclectic career that went largely unnoticed by the general public after the Swinging London scene ended. She also co wrote and released her own version of, the Stones song, Sister Morphine, though it took the Stones about 25 years to actually credit her. So that might make a good comparison. ..iirc, there are two versions by Marianne, one from the 60's, and one from the 70's. According to Keith Richards in his book, she also had a hand in writing the lyrics to several other Stones songs, Dear Doctor, being one of them.
Marianne has two great albums , Broken English & Before The Poison. This is an excellent version of this song. With age , her voice became much deeper. She is a legend who lived a full life ✨️. RIP
Nice song, I've always liked it. Quite sad, so normally I do not listen to it. As I like songs that make you happy, so has we can get through this sometimes very tough and challenging life.
First thing I'd like to say is that this song is a classic. It's cute, but it's more than just cute. Secondly, she is a legendary figure and an icon of swinging London. I'd also like to add that Marianne Faithfull had some history with Australia. She attempted to take her own life over here while Mick Jagger was working on the film, _Ned Kelly,_ and I believe she had been in the wilderness for most of the 70's. I've always had a soft spot for her. A song that needs to be on your channel is her cover of Dr Hook's "The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan'', from her 1979 album _Broken English._ I remember being quite shocked by how much she had changed when I first saw the ''Lucy Jordan'' video on Countdown. I was certain the song would blow up in Australia, but like the UK, the single only reached # 48. _Broken English_ was a dark record, but if you ever decide to react to more of her work, try tracks like ''Witches Song'', ''Broken English'', and the painful ''Why D'Ya Do It''. They're worth your time. Rest In Peace sweet Marianne Faithfull🕯
Fantastic stuff, Hayley ! .. Agree 100% with everything you said about the wonderful Marianne Faithful 💖 .. She is indeed a legend, and will always be so. This song is definitely much more than just cute .. As you said, it's an absolute classic .. The sweetly wistful vocals, ultra pretty melody, charming instrumental accompaniment, and poignant bittersweet lyrics all combine beautifully here .. I've always really loved it. I also loved her voice on other 60s hits like "Come And Stay With Me" and "Summer Nights" .. And then amidst all her well publicised troubles, she pretty much disappeared, only to re-emerge in the late 70s with her radically different music. Like you, it was shocking at first for me to witness this new version of Marianne, both visually and vocally .. She now looked and sounded world-weary and scarred by the harshness of life and reality, with a much increased raspiness to her once pure voice. But the music and her new image were both totally compelling .. "Broken English" ( 1979 ) is a dark record for sure, but it's brutally honest, raw, and uninhibited, and is a must-listen .. I also totally adore her next album "Dangerous Acquaintances" ( 1981 ), which while still edgy, has a bit more melody to it, and is full of great songs like "Intrigue", "For Beauty's Sake", "Truth Bitter Truth", and "Sweetheart". And all the work she did afterwards was personal and unbowing to the conventions and expectations of the music industry .. She always came across to me as very honest and charming in any interviews I saw of her, and she loved and appreciated her fans. A very inspirational woman and musician .. RIP Marianne.
@ I always had time for her. I was a little torn between my teeny bopper love for Duran Duran and my appreciation for Marianne Faithfull. There were a few Countdown kids that were ''Ugh.. Not her again!'' whenever one of her clips came on TV.
@@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-75-83 Based on the various things you've told me, your musical tastes were a lot more mature and diverse than the average Countdown Kid .. You could appreciate great music of different styles from the 60s onwards, and included stuff that was definitely not teeny bopperish or trendy .. I'm glad you saw the value in Marianne's music.👍🙏
She did an awesome cover of Dr Hook's 'The Ballad of Lucy Jordan' written by Shel Silverstein--when you listen to it, make sure you have the lyrics open, and when the meaning hits you, your jaw will drop.
RIP Marianne Evelyn Gabriel Faithfull (29 December 1946 - 30 January 2025) was an English singer and actress who achieved popularity in the 1960s with the release of her UK top 5 single "As Tears Go By" and became one of the leading female artists of the British Invasion in the United States. MARIANNE FAITHFULL sold over 837,500 albums. Faithfull was born in Hampstead, London. Her father, Major Robert Glynn Faithfull, was a British intelligence officer and professor of Italian literature at Bedford College of London University. Her mother, Eva, was the daughter of Artur Wolfgang, Ritter von Sacher-Masoch (1875-1953), an Austro-Hungarian nobleman of old Polonized Catholic Ruthenian nobility. Eva chose to style herself as Eva von Sacher-Masoch, Baroness Erisso. Eva had been a ballerina for the Max Reinhardt Company during her early years, and danced in productions of works by the German theatrical duo Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. In 1966, she took Nicholas to stay with Brian Jones and Anita Pallenberg in London. During this period, Faithfull started smoking marijuana and became best friends with Pallenberg. She began a much-publicised relationship with Mick Jagger that same year and left her husband to live with him. The couple became a notorious part of the hip Swinging London scene. Peace out.
A great singer who was not afraid to pull punches lyrically (she had a song called Why'd you do it? that actually used the "C" word!!). I'll be honest, other than the Broken English album and a few songs my son has played for me, I only know her from her cameo in Metallica song and Also a cameo on Rupert Hines fantastic song, Misplaced Love (I highly recommend that one). Oh, you might remember the Ballad of Lucy Jordan!!
To get an idea of the way her voice developed/deteriorated beyond recognition, I strongly recommend you have a listen to Sister Morphine, the version from 1969, followed by anything from the album Broken English, her 1979 masterpiece.
Notanotherenigma asked for this, and I do too. ''Rupert Hine - Misplaced Love (Countdown 50 Audio + Video merge 2024)'' Marianne Faithfull makes a cameo on it. It was also a big hit in Australia thanks to the efforts of Countdown kids begging dubious radio DJ's to the play it. Thanks for telling me to f-off Greg Evans. I will always hate you for that. Cheers, Hayley
@@wino5086 Is that what he does now? What a loser. He used refer to Countdown kids as ''little c...'s'' (you know the word). Maybe it had something to do with them egging his car for not playing some song on 3XY. He hung up on me when I made a request, so I ran to a friend's house and called 3XY back. When I finally got through I yelled at him on air, and he yelled F-off back at me. He managed to mute his profanity. My friend and I were laughing about it, but I still hated him for it. Fun days for sure!
Such a sad passing. I love everything she ever did. As strange as it might be I always preferred her damaged voice. Lucy Jordan, Broken English and Something good etc. Even this song after she wrecked her originol voice sounded better to me.
This video is lame. There's one of her singing ( lip-synching) on the old music-themed TV program Hullabaloo. Though produced in black & white, it included mostly close-ups, so you could see what a 'looker' she was.
Try this one MUCH better. Mick and Keef (that's Jagger and Richards in case you don't know who they are) wrote this for her. She has had literally dozens of brilliant songs. R.I.P. Marianne. th-cam.com/video/S8EykQaZ8CU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=pwCWjpl7dNvS2UaS Also have a look at the Ballad of Lucy Jordan.

Stunningly beautiful and one of the icons of the 60s. This is probably Marianne's most famous song. RIP.
The Rolling Stones did their own version of this 2 years after Marianne. It's good as well.
