- The term Disk Jokey has taken on a different meaning as of recently. Old school guys like me just wanted to spin hit songs on the radio. New age DJ's are ramping it up with beat matching and effects. Let's talk about how they use fancy turntables to do what they do, or did before digital. We'll also throw in some vintage back cuing techniques.

The reason is that it os plastic on the outside. If I take the insulation in my speaker to wrap it with plastic then the insulation will not dampen anymore!
All old speakers with wall insulation were wrapped in fabric and not plastic !!
Plastic is air tight! you have to use large foam mats !!
I have no idea how djaying works but I love my DJ turntable which I allowed myself to buy in January 2020! I'm only about 2 years into vinyl now but I can say, it's the most satisfying thing, I ever experienced. satisfying and fascinating.
Love this video. I still remember the day when my friend showed me at his place the manual transition between records. I was just floored as to how accurate he was in seamlessly mixing the songs together on the fly. That is a real talent.

i love the "imperfections" of old school DJs, it made it more unique, you could say. today, it's very non-stop and impersonal, so much so you can't tell one city's flavor to another.
then again, 80s DJs that played at block parties were my scene, haha!

crazy to think growing up, we moved from vinyl, to cassettes to CDs, to digital... and now back to where we started!

I used to record a program on Sunday evenings called "the seventh day" when my local radio station (K-SHE 95 REAL ROCK RADIO) would spin several entire albums from 6-9pm or so. And when the last song on an LP carries into the first song on the next it was like I wanted to beat the Disc Jockey...or "DJ" over the head in a fashion similar to 12:30 😆
Glad you're back with more vinyl content. Fiddly audiophile guys lol. It's amazing how much $$$$$$ or $$$$$ or even $$$$ they spend on vinyl playback equipment. As long as it doesn't damage the record groove, I don't think I could hear the difference.

The 1200 Mk7 came out last year, after a bunch of much pricier special editions and one-offs. It retails for $900-$1k. It’s a really sweet TT, much more expensive than most of the clones but built like a solid slab. You could probably defend yourself with one in a fight if necessary.
YAY a new video! I've been cleaning and ripping some of my vinyl recently.
I understand that a lot of your viewers might really enjoy learning this DJ-ing techniques. But I'm like you, I'm not a DJ nor do I ever anticipate doing with a turntable and needle what these techniques showcase. Just a simple vinyl spinning audiophile who's been spinning vinyl for over 55 years. I do want to thank you for the videos you produced on the new Fluance turntables. I finally bought the RT-85 (which is the absolutely last table a DJ would use). Manual's forever, for me~

I believe this is just the difference between a Radio DJ and a Club DJ, however the "old" method you speak of still applied to some extent to the earlier days of DJs who spun old Techno and House plates with long playtimes. Interesting video nonetheless, loving your channel still!
i didn´t even understand what he was doing, and worked as a dj for 35 years using two SL-1200mkII bought in 76 but at the same time i started a raduio station wich today is one more fm station ,before every show was a piece of musical art
Hey Craig, been a fan for a long time. Not sure if you'll ever see this but I just wanted to say thanks for all the quality videos and the incredible insight that you bring to the vinyl discussion. I've collected for about eight years but never started to take sound and the quality of it seriously until I discovered your channel and learned how to take a turntable setup and get the absolute most out of it. I was born and raised in a "holler" in West Virginia and kinda ended up doing a little bit of everything and moving all over, but each chapter of my life has those albums that define it and getting the best sounds possible out of them has been one of the most fun endeavors I've undergone! So, at risk of rambling too long, I'll just say thanks again. Just know that you've genuinely helped and entertained a lot of us 👍
i agree Craig bring back the "real" DJ. In fact one of our local DJ's said he wishes they would play vinyl again he misses it

I’m a DJ and this is actually how I kind of do it. I sort of set the cross fader in the middle and as the other song fades out I start up the second record. Very simple. I’m not a scratch it up beat matching DJ. I do a lot of 80’s 90’s parties where people like to see the use of real records. I use 2 at lp120’s for my gigs and have an at lp1240 for my personal use. Technics is great would love to have a 1200 but think they’re extremely over priced these days. I really enjoy your videos. It’s good to see someone else with the same passion for music and records.

As a mix DJ in a Club in the early 80's I preferred to mix on the fly - no back cueing is needed. And never used the pitch. You have just to know your records very well.

Hey Craig always enjoy your videos! When I sign onto TH-cam on my Roku and and see there's new videos by you and Techmoan you are the first guys I check out. I couldn't help notice on the display behind you shows the temperature in fahrenheit. I'm wondering is there a specific reason why you don't have it in Celsius since you are in Canada?
Growing up, I got used to Fahrenheit in the house, because it pretty much stays the same, but I got used to Celsius for out doors because it changes and the radio uses Celsius. So, I guess I use both, depending on the environment.
Ftr DJs don't match beats so you don't notice or think it's the same song. They match beats so the groove and beats, when the songs transition, don't interrupt the dancefloor flow. A good club DJ will want the crowd to hear the next song in a way that keeps them dancing - not to pretend the songs are one song. plus many will use the pitch control to mix one song's vocals over another song's music, preferably in the same key. it's not just about locking beats to create a monotonous vibe or to fool the crowd, at least with good club DJs. It's more about creating pleasant surprises and anticipation for what's next.
The new 120X is seriously cheapened down, no height adj, wall wart powered, detachable target light, no reverse and plastic 45 adapter, the 140XP is a major improvement over the old 120, no preamp BS, rubber damped platter, RCA out instead of captive lead. The Grado and Ortofon carts are taller than AT or Shure carts, the height on 0 is still too tall even with 6mm mat with AT cart on the old 120
Beat matching only applies to DJs that only play 4/4 music. I've done it I have worked for world famous musicians and honestly it gets pretty boring after a while. Great video!
I've got some mccurdy turntables from the cbc and they dont have pitch but they have enough torque to pull a truck and weigh 40 plus pounds each, you could cue them and start them within a 16th of a turn , great for radio mixing 45s

Just for curiousity, what exactly is the tonearm hight level used for, for the most part? Im a skratch DJ, in learning, & practicing, & wanted to know if the height level adjustment is important as a skratch DJ, thanx a bunch....... 👍👊💪🙏😎
I'm just guessing here, but beyond wanting a different cartage/stylus build and/or mat and accommodating their height, as a scratch DJ, you may want the stylus closer to 90 degrees so that it rides the grooves the same both ways, not digging in more one way than the other - like I said, just a guess. Cheers.
Also what do you all think of the Audio-Technica LP 120X ?
There is also DVS = Digital Vinyl System which I personally don't like. Basically records with timecode that's send via audio interface to computer to control the software. It's digital DJing essentially and has nothing to do with vinyl and analog.

They play some of the most off beat stuff like the theme song to the show Hawaii 50, The movie The Good The Bad and The Ugly, 20s 30s version of Old McDonald. Pink Floyd, Simon and Garfunkle....has one DJ named Chris Compton in the morning with lots of old cornball jokes. I have my radio playing all day. Thanks again for your videos. Peace

I don't want to dj, just listen to music. That being said, I also enjoy listening to my 78 collection and as much as I'd like to have a Fluance, they won't play 78's, but the other kind will which is why I got my Pioneer DJ PLX500.
What about those little tiny squares (dots) on the side of the platter? What are they for?
p.s. I know what they are, but others may not. :)

they are being released today and panasonic is just another comercial brand from Matsushita, first, National ,then National Panasonic ,then Panasonic ,later Technics by Panasonic , but in countries that Panasonic sold well still are being released as panasonic but Technics it´s alive they even release a new SL-1200 this last year, i bought one in Beige, also home receivers and amplifiers , speakers ,etc.

I'm Gavin from Essex in the UK, Love your videos, got my self a Technics SL-23A never been used, was in the original packing, had to replace the belt and a full service, by a professional, (who is on holiday for 2 weeks) when the records get the last song it keeps slipping and at the end of the record, it skips back to last song (part) have to help the arm to the end and then it returns back, i have following your instructions and it plays perfect until it gets to the end.. also need to know what should be the weight for the Diamond EPS-35STED, with your help i might not have to wait for 2 weeks to enjoy my music. Await your instructions. Thank you.

Technology today is far from when I used to DJ. Can you tell me what amplifiers of today work with traditional/old school set-ups such as Technics turntables and pre-amp mixers circa 70's-90's?

If it's belt drive, it might need a new belt. I would need more information.

Tjanyou Craig for your channel and your tips. You made me be aware of the beautyful Fluance recordplayer brand so a week ago (some weeks after I ordered from Amazon (impossible to buy one of theese beauties in sweden) I got my Fluance RT-85 (BUT REALLY FLUANCE ITS NOT 4 DIFFERENT MODELS BUT MAYBEE YOU CAN SAY ITS 2 DIFFERENT MODELS. ITS JUST DIFFERENT CARTRIDGES ON THE SAME PLAYER. AND i have about ten different cartridges. And if I change to my 2M Black does my player then become a RT-86 OR? And if i change cartridge to my Clearaudio or my old MicroAcoystic). MA-2002e will I get a RT-92 OR?). AND the same week I got my new Technics SL-1500C from one of the most trusted HiFi shops in Stockholm sweden with a 2M Red that I changed to a 2M Silver.
So you made me buy thoose two players. Thanks very much for tha tip. Im very pkeased with both players. I needed those because I cant easily change pucups on my old trusted Thorens TD-160 (from the mid 70ties during my studies for my master of science degree) or my Pro-Ject Classic. So now I can retire my old Luxman PD-290. It feels fantastic to get my new darling from over the big ocean from Canada just by using my cellphone (in Sweden we call cellphones for mobiltelefon!).
So many thanks for your informative videos thats allways friendly and cosy to listen to for an old HiFi lover like me. So now I can record my old LPs to casettes an reel reel to reel recorders after they are refurbished an got real good service. So "Forward to the History" !

If anybody is actually interested in what DJ's are doing today instead of beat matching with Cd's or vinyl. Because it was mentioned that today DJ-ing has become more complicated. And being a former Vinyl DJ that is also a modern DJ I can tell you that this is a discussion that many DJ's have today.. The old method of DJ-ing. The Synchronizing 2 records by beat-matching them is a art-form. For some Die-Hard DJ purist this and this alone is what makes a DJ a real DJ. However this art-form became meaningless once CD players got the sync button. Instead of beat-matching you now only have to press the sync button and your Records are now time synced. No work no effort. While beat-matching was something that you needed to learn and improve over the course of weeks months or perhaps even years if you are playing with 3 turntables. Now any 5 year old can do all of that by just pressing one button. And there are DJ's that actually dj like that. Just press sync and go from one track to the next. And in that sense DJ has become a lot more easier. However it becomes more complicated once you start using that time that you no longer have to beat sync. By playing 4 songs at the same time. instead of 2. And adding effects between those 4 songs such as looping, Filters, Deley, Gaters, Flangers and more. Today many DJ's use a laptop instead of CD players. So they can look at a big screen that tells them what record is doing what. If this is your method of DJ-ing. Then yes. DJ-ing today is more complicated. However playing 4 records at the same and putting a bunch of effects on them doesn't really leave much of one original song. It has become close to creating something new. Rather then playing a song that somebody else made. That is why this complicated way of DJ-ing is often done by Techno DJ's. Because in Techno the songs have shorter or less breaks. There is often less melody en is generally more percussion oriented. What makes it the perfect genre to play that way. However in Electronic Dance Music there are countless of other genres. Where they prefer to keep much of the original song in tact. So many DJ's don't play that way. So is DJ-ing more complicated then it it use to be? In general I would say no. Everybody can purchase a laptop. use DJ software and learn how to DJ just like some big famous DJ's do and learn it in one day. What can not be said about learning to DJ with Vinyl. The sync button really removes all the work that DJ's use to do in the old days. Now some DJ's chooses to use that time where they do nothing to ad more tracks, or samples or effects or what ever technology allows them to do. But then there is also a large group of dj's. That uses that time where they don't have to do anything. To actually not doing anything.

the technics turntables were just fine because of what is showed in the video they slide easily reverse or foward like in this version of AT ,also the weight of the plater helped a lot and the start /stop button wich in this TT doesn´t make it return as a stop button ,one of the features why dj´s prefered the technics, it starts rapidly not like this one that you hear the TT starting to get speed in the technics it starts from the point you left the needle, at the speed you previouly defined as the litle light that was only instaled in the mkII that helps you see in what point of the grooves you want the needle . Even, if your a dj or have some experience, you can notice on the printing of the vinyl where diferent changes happens in one song ,so at home it wasn´t a good TT because it never returns if you let it ,it will rotate endlessly at the end of the record, that´s why it was released as a work TT since the beggining and being prefered to dj´s around the world they ended increasing the number of functions a dj would find helpfull ,just look at the 73 model and the release of mkII , it´s what you have today, look into pdf catalogs to learn about the evolution of turntables in the 70´s decade if you´re interested in technics brand start by that, all are available on-line today , before you had to ask around friends all over europe and if they had any they would xerox copied them and send it through mail, it was almost a adrenaline rush , when you were entering you´re house and spoted you´re mail box (phisical one )and find a big envelope that would have things that you asked for and finally they were there, regards
It's one thing you didn't mentioned when i comes to back cuing , you better be sure that the needle is sharpened to go two directions, or else you might worn the record out pretty fast, that's probably why the record was worn out in the old days' i guess they didn't know then, but we know now. Today's dj cartridges are Stanton or Ortofon Concorde series (you might lock that up) they are used for scratching ,they got some for nightclubs, for trance music, they even got one for radio stations-etc etc. Tor :)

Adjusting anti-skating using a flat glass disc. Passing this on to you. After everything else on the turntable is adjusted and ready. Make absolutely sure the disc table itself, not the frame, is as flat to gravity as you can get it. Use a bubble leveler.
You’ll need to contact local glass suppliers and ask them to make a 12in dia. 1/4in thick ( same as an LP ) disk out of as flat a glass as they can get or manufacture. Ask for "Flat Glass". Once you’ve confirmed that they can supply the flat glass and cut the disk you’ll need them to drill a hole dead center in the disk. That is a real challenge as they’ll probably break a few discs before they are successful. Now you’ve got a perfectly flat, within microns, and perfectly silent on playback glass disk.
Place the disk on your table and carefully place the tonearm with cartridge and needle in about the center of the tracks area of the spinning disk. When the disc is spinning the arm will probably slowly move towards the center of the disk. Adjust the anti-skating such that the arm will slowly move outward towards the outer edge of the disk. You’ll have to catch it to prevent it from falling off. It’ll take a few trys to get it right. Set the anti-skate such that it tracks outward on the spinning disk and takes about 5 or 10 seconds to get to the outer edge of the disk.
Now your anti-skating is set correctly. LPs when played mechanically want to push the arm towards the center of the disk. Anti-skating wants to counter balance that.
I think I paid a glass supplier a couple hundred dollars to create one disk. 1970’s. He broke I think three disks to get one good one. I’ve still got it.

The actual name you're referring to is float glass. No such thing as flat glass. Also, there are blank LP's made for doing anti-skate adjustment. You can buy them on Amazon. Just put in the Amazon search box blank vinyl records. Cost is only $25 and a hell of a lot cheaper than the $75-$100 glass version sold on Amazon or having a glass shop make you one.
that is right but not that diferent but the one thing that changed is the live remix of a song blending it to a main rythm wich is been playing for several songs in what refers to b.p.m. , about radio shows it´s simple as in the 70´s you used to buy a stereo receiver ,that´s how important was to listen to your favorite radio shows to learn about new releases or even new bands and not from the main corporations who had a great distribution system but those you contact through letter, phone was too much expensive ,so they after reading your letter would send to you a full catalog of their releases or a sampler from their own bands or several singles and sometimes you had through mail everything they release from diferent labels you´ve contacted, and it happen some american bands had a negative feedback on their region or country then they heard a lot of talking about them on european publications and demands like when are you available to play live ,this in diferent country´s, sometimes they came to europe and had great receptions like several radioshows wanted them to be interviewed ,this from the main stations around europe, and they were contacted to give more concerts than the ones already booked when they were in the U.S., some even stayed in germany or england or spain for a lot of monthes to deal with the amount of demand they didn´t know how big it was this side of the pond, regards

Turntable is not what you should use today if you are a DJ. Much easier to use a pc!

@@manFromPeterborough the main goal is not having pre-di9gitalised efects but to create them as you start to know the records from one point to another ,digital djing isn´t nothing ,all is pre-remixed and you see a guy doing nothing or faking that he is making a arpegio ,but in reality lots of explosions and lights while the DJ walks the stage without knowing what to do, in 35 years in never used those do it all pioneer cd players and mixing boards ,even the B.P.M. is there you don´t have to mix nothing
@@ford1546 well ,they emulate dj´s work so why not evolve?the dare it´s mixing two songs that don´t fit at any level but that is learned with the years, i only started to use a roland MC-303 either than two turntables this in the last years of work, and a good mixing board ,analogue one
The DJ's of today can't hold a candle to the DJ's of the disco era. We did everything they do today but a whole lot better, and without a computer and DJ software. Take away their computer/software and they suck and even with their computer they still suck lol
@@user-js6ch1mf8g As a club DJ in the 70's I had no choice. My advice to any aspiring DJ today is to put away the computer, let your ears and not the computer do the work
I agree I was a dj in the disco era I think all this beat matching is not needed all the people on the dance floor want to hear is good music to dance to they can't tell the difference with beat matching all I had was two turntables and a sound mixer I did it that way for years

@@TheShift. when i stoped being a dj in 2005 after 35 years the most famous dj´s in Europe or around the world now they just fake making something and walk around the stage with a expensive light efects , there was one dj that he played house music but for my taste he was very bad in choosin` his songs but he makes anything with the turntables he even played with old jazz musicians making them turntables sound like a instrument ,allthough i didn´t like he´s live acts i recognise he had achieved a very higfh quality of handling it´s turntables, he could play any note with a turntable and a mixing board ,today all is perverted . Hated because they know how to work not just a rich kid
