@@SaltwaterAngler A great sign too, thornback rays are usually where you'll get Huss. I often think fish migrate to different area's, stay for maybe ten years breeding away then they move on and some stay behind and they naturalize there if they're not fished out. Pollution is a big factor too .
Can’t go wrong with some of the penn reels around £100 . Or a little more for the penn spinfisher long cast that are on sale at the moment becuase a new model is due and I have seen the 6500 size for as little as £125
Hello from Ireland Matt being watching you for the last year or so . Really enjoyable fishing videos that you post. keep up the good work , Regards Pat
Okuma distance surf 80 reel. Cheap as chips and appear to be the only manufacturer that can make a line roller that lasts. I've been using them over fairly rough ground on the east coast of Scotland and while they don't feel as robust as some heavier and more expensive reels they just seem to keep going.
Excellent video as always, well done Matt, you don't give up easily. It's all about perseverance, but it doesn't always pay off! I don't know how recent that last session was, but judging by the amazing sky it definitely looked like storm Ciaran coming in. I have never tried live bait when beach fishing, you've inspired me to have a go.
Hello mat shimano aelex xtb 1000 £70-£80 I used them for long range carp fishing for years.I got handle conversations to make them a bit easier to wind in. Great channel btw
I’d love to go back in time to those days. I wonder what cod fishing would of been like in the 1900s before sea angling was a thing. Maybe there were 25lb bass in our seas at some point? Thanks will be dreaming of big fish now 👍
Awesome again Matt, very fishy looking water, I only use circle hooks, I see someone has mentioned Warrior Square, in the comments, caught and LOST many good sized fish useing live pout there in my teens .Happy catching from Australia Nick
Iv heard Penn Affinity are nice reels, well within your price range. Nice video Matt. I have an Akios Scora 80 and it never lasted more than a few months before needing a new gear.
Penn Wrath are excellent also. Mine has taken some punishment regularly for two years now and with the occasional clean and lube, it still works like a dream.
Akios Fireloop is a decent reel sub £100. If you can stretch to a R8 or R10 you will be impressed. I caught my first fish a 50cm Bass on live bait last week. Small pouting on short snood zipped down the line on a swivel clip. Was very exciting haha cool vids
I never leave the rod when bassing! They can take a bait and spit it out in seconds - that's why well over 90% of mine are lip hoooked! I was given this advice by Ted Holgate of the Brighton Angler 40 years ago! Even so they've had the rod over before I'v
Would a live bait rig work better like a small hook for the live bait then a bigger hook in front for the bigger fish , then the live bait is out with the bait fish
Yes a stinger rig can be used to good effect. Yet to find a supplier of an all in one double small and big hook. I just use braid or old telephone wire to connect the two hooks - good question as I’ve been looking for a solid supplier for that stinger rig
Hi Matt, the injured one here. Where can I ask questions? What's app won't let me. Anyways what's your opinion on telescopic rods? ...Mrs would rather I use a cane from the garden when I get back out 😮
Another way of identifying them maybe not as conclusive as the nasal flaps but if unsure and out of ideas - Huss eyes are def. Green and Dogs are black just another way of telling. You got a real great shot of the huss eyes 👀 as well 👍
Thanks and coming from the Huss master too ! I really like your tip - I think my sun concuss said somethings weird about that fish ! Great tip thanks for that - last ones I caught were on your patch from cilan !
I wonder how many good fish have been lost by TH-camrs filming fish over a year 😂 I know I lost a good few this year already. Been a fair few of these smaller BullHuss about this year, a good sign for the future locally.
Thanks Ben, when those Huss are the same size as the dogs I also wondered if some Anglers assume they are Dogs. Will always be double checking in future.
Nothing wrong with live baiting , check your bait fridge all that is frozen in it were taken from the sea killed ect , take up knitting , you cant catch fish on avacado and letuce lol
Thanks yes they do look similar but It’s the nostrils that define them as Huss. Are you watching on a phone ? Should be evident on a bigger screen in HD. Squid all wrapped up - just like a lump of meat but it narrows on the gape of the hook a bit better that way round
I think the spotting pattern on lesser and greater spotted dogfish is quite different and one of them had the clear, round individual spots of the Huss and one the masses of freckles of all sizes of the doggie. Clearly bull huss and doggie.
You do understand as long as that live bait goes back in the water it’s food for another fish. Catching fish with rod and line is actually the best way to do it. I’m sure you buy fish from the supermarket and think that’s ok. think of the damage done by these boats. And look up the term bycatch. Usually a large amount of a catch is thrown back dead.
I’d recommend the Okuma SURF 8K Fixed Reel it’s around the £90 mark and a solid built and silky smooth reel . Tight lines n all that jazz 👍🏼
Nice thank you for that will check it out.
Plenty of yuki reels out there for under 100 quid. I have mine 3 years and they are super!!
Thanks , will check them out
I use an Okuma Skyliner 8000 as my fixed spool. It has held up well with a nice big/comfy handle and did not break the bank. It feels very strong too.
THANKS
Yeah the heads are different too, we catch a lot of huss in the west of Ireland
I knew straight away they weren't dogfish.
Well done
Good spot ! Yes they look more shark like don’t they. Such a curious change for us here on the beach.

Great info thanks , we can all benefit from this 👍
regarding reel, I use the Okuma 8K surf reel. Brilliant to use, impeccable line lay and it'll handle rough ground Cod fishing.
Good info
@SaltwaterAngler very good reel for the money. It feels sturdy, and they do a long cast spool as well.
Good to see about the bulls
Maybe we will start catching big ones at some point on the shore.
Yes quite possible!
Hello from Ireland Matt being watching you for the last year or so . Really enjoyable fishing videos that you post. keep up the good work , Regards Pat
Thanks Pat ,Really appreciate you introducing yourself. Had some good fishing in Ireland in the past !

Thanks 👍 as always. Yes this was a small storm before Ciaran But ill be fishing Friday to see what it brings
You need A LOT of patience for live baiting. Fish are few and far between!
Hello mat shimano aelex xtb 1000
£70-£80
I used them for long range carp fishing for years.I got handle conversations to make them a bit easier to wind in.
Great channel btw
Thanks yes I’m a shimano fan for lure fishing - so these are a solid choice thanks
Matt I remember back in the late 50's someone had a 15lb bull huss off the groyne at Warrior sq.
I knew someone would have a story like this !
Thats how it is Matt same as I know a bloke who had a 17lb bass at the new church venue many years ago@@SaltwaterAngler
I’d love to go back in time to those days. I wonder what cod fishing would of been like in the 1900s before sea angling was a thing. Maybe there were 25lb bass in our seas at some point? Thanks will be dreaming of big fish now 👍
Nice one Matt. That does look fresh, doesn't it. great fishing after a good rough up.
Yes it does! Could be even better after todays storm
Another great video Matt. Such a surprise to see a Bull Huss in our area! Good spot - I shall have to check when I catch doggies now!
Hi Brian Yep was thinking that too. Especially as the spots and colouration is similar to the LSDs over our shingle.
Awesome again Matt, very fishy looking water, I only use circle hooks, I see someone has mentioned Warrior Square, in the comments, caught and LOST many good sized fish useing live pout there in my teens .Happy catching from Australia Nick
Hi Nick thanks as always.

Cool, thanks have been looking at those appreciated.

well done matt great video as always enjoyed watching this one while eating breakfast cheers pal.
Glad you enjoyed it.Full English i Hope

Nice catch and thanks for the reel info !
Great video mate ❤🎉
Thanks for the visit
Id like to try livebait at some point . I understand its not for all but id appreciate some guidance on types of hook and presentation.
Noted!
Nice video fair play
BlackRock bullfrog 8000 fixed spool around £80

Hello mate - here is the best place - telescopic rods are a no go for me. Some good 5 piece ones though.
Looks very similar to one of my sessions mate! I can catch a dogfish in a canal🤣😂 I’m a grand master🫣😂
Nice one

@@SaltwaterAngler 😂 not had as many this year. Still one more trip pencilled in before Xmas so there's still time for some more 😁
@fishingsquaduk1251 show us its nostrils!
Also commercially known as rock Salmon.
Glad to see another video from you.
I'm surprised you didn't catch more in that very fishy looking surf. Those two Doggies were nice though.
Had about 5 Doggies and 3 Huss
How rude..

@@SaltwaterAngler I see the spots before i see anything else personally, far more pronounced and more circular!
Where’s this?
Live baiting will attract larger fish….
Did you kill them and then throw them away ? I do hope not .
Not sure where the confusion is ? Viewers of this the video can see this is catch and release or catch to eat.
@@SaltwaterAngler genuinely sorry I was watching without sound (subtitles as the missus watching shite on tv ) must have missed that ,
No sound on the video
Nothing wrong with live baiting , check your bait fridge all that is frozen in it were taken from the sea killed ect , take up knitting , you cant catch fish on avacado and letuce lol
I see a new line in saltwater Angler T shirts “you can’t catch fish on avocado and lettuce”
Its now a deadbait
Should have titled this video “rare to catch any fish from here”
Two things…..
Why are you baiting a squid head up?… odd!
And you sure about those dog fish?? They look both the same too me
Thanks yes they do look similar but It’s the nostrils that define them as Huss. Are you watching on a phone ? Should be evident on a bigger screen in HD.
Squid all wrapped up - just like a lump of meat but it narrows on the gape of the hook a bit better that way round

I thimk dog fish all day long
Very similar arnt they
mate you should be throwing those tiny fish back an if you are using live fish as bate don't stream it
Thanks for taking your time to comment. It’s not for everyone
It’s bait not bate. Also he wasn’t streaming it he was recording it. If he recorded it why can’t he put it on TH-cam…?
You lost me at using a fish as a live bait.
Sure,it’s not for everyone.
Would you prefer he used a hamster instead?
You do understand as long as that live bait goes back in the water it’s food for another fish. Catching fish with rod and line is actually the best way to do it. I fail to understand your logic ... A hooked fish is a hooked fish whether you put it in there or it took a bait, what's the difference
Glad we lost you
Typical British fishing, not much to show for all that effort.👍🏼👍🏼
