Area BFE Clamshell RTT Setup. Gear Review #3.

  • The Area BFE tent is pretty slick. If you don't like the bulk and setup times of other tents check this one out. It has an aluminum construction and the extruded all around makes it so you can mount anything to the sides like a shovel or your tracks instead of bungee cording them to the optional rails ($299) like I did. It's about the same weight as the last tent I had up there but the low profile makes it seem lighter. The mattress isn't anything to write home about, but it's not something to not write home about, I've slept like a baby the 3 nights I've had in it so far. I haven't had any condensation which I believe is due to the vents and the slope of the roof moving any moisture up and out. I'm fine at 6'1" but if you're any taller that same slope might be a bother down at the tight end. Other than that I'm pretty pleased so far.
    Also on a personal note, if anyone cares, I'm not done making trail videos and will get one this weekend.

    My Tires:
    amzn.to/2whk2MF
    I love these tires. The only others I'd take are the BFG KO2 but they don't make them in this size and the KM2's are amazing. You can probably imagine the amount of driving I do weekly and how much abuse my tires get.
    My Tire Deflators:
    amzn.to/2nYVxzU
    These tire deflators have many $15 copies but the others just don't hold up or are inaccurate. I don't know what the deal is, they look identical to me too but read the reviews- they're bad. I've been using these Staun's for over a year and never had a problem, I air down a lot. Set them at the trail so your tires will be the same temp when you get to the trail next time.
    My Compressor:
    amzn.to/2PuerLH
    There are better ones but I'd just get a bigger VIAIR, not someone different. Airs up all my 33's from 14psi to 37psi in less than 10 minutes. The in-line gauge is inaccurate when the compressor is on because of the pressure passing through. You need to switch it off to get a real reading. You can combat this by figuring out what incorrect reading corresponds to the real one. When mine is right at 3 Bar (43psi) it's slightly over 37psi. I put it on another tire and then use my real gauge to set it exactly.
    My Microphone:
    amzn.to/2P1S3sb
    My microphone is the worst good mic you can get. BUT don't be fooled, it's a very good mic. Picture me getting in my car for the 50th time after I just ran up and down a hill... for the 50th time. Do you see me disconnecting my mic and gingerly setting it in a case? No. It stays connected to the tripod, gets thrown into my plastic cargo area and bounces around with other heavy items until the next one. It gets terrible interference from WiFi so you must make sure that it's off on your camera or phone. If you are trying to use this with your phone you need to get a TRS to TRRS cable which RODE makes. This is required because your phone will think the mic is headphones.
    My Tripod:
    amzn.to/2o8h6hL
    I went through 2 tripods in 1 month, a $20 and a $30. Buy it nice or buy it thrice. This thing gets opened and closed MANY times per week in rain, snow, dirt, and even in the middle of rivers. I love the 2-stage legs so i can make it real low in 2sec instead of shortening all the legs.
    My Drone:
    amzn.to/2KUGWAp
    You can tell how easy it was to progress through my videos. Besides maybe five times, you've seen every bit of flying since I got it. I don't fly in the city and I don't go to the mountains and not make a video. It is VERY easy to use.
    My Drone ND Filters:
    amzn.to/2MHV0R0
    The filters are a must. Again I have the worst ones and I am still very pleased. My first use was video #35 and I think it is very apparent. Illinois Gulch (#34 obviously) has a completely white sky, way too much blue. I'm still not even good about selecting the right one or changing them out but it's 10x better than nothing.
    My Books:
    amzn.to/2wmd20O CO
    amzn.to/2BzDIBc CO North
    amzn.to/2ByPuvy Moab
    FunTreks books are great. I like to bring as much information as possible when I go to the middle of nowhere. They have coordinates and maps for everything, very in-depth info on sturdy pages.

    Beautiful tent. I really love the hard shell type like this and obviously, the very easy set up and break down, but damn, that price. I need to think about it and also which bed rack to get for my Tacoma. Any suggestions from people? I have a stock tonneau cover, try fold, that would need to be accommodated and I do know brackets are made to do that, but I wonder how much strength you compromise in that process ..... thanks in advance.

      @BRollOffroad  ปีที่แล้ว

      maintaining the cover is a tall order, the ones that do it right don’t sacrifice strength though. i can’t remember who does it, maybe Leitner or UpTop has one now.

    This is def the style of tent to buy if you are wanting a RTT, after using a soft top style and researching all different types and this is by far the best. The ones that are hardshell and go up on all corners are not very stable in windy conditions. Great review

    I just purchased the exact tent off of Alibaba. It could be a waste of money for I could be saving 50%. 45-50 shipping time will determine that lol.

    Hello! I am writing you because you have me sold on this particular piece of gear but i cannot find one! There is a newer version for a lot more money that I do not like as well! Dang. This did not end up in your closet by accident? I would just love to buy it from you. If you have any great thoughts on this, please let me know. Love your playfulness! Julie

      @BRollOffroad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yea it’s real nice although i don’t mind fold outs. out of the 3 RTT’s i’ve tested the 23Zero Breezeway has been my favorite. i’ll take a few more minutes setup time for increased space and ability to keep stuff in the tent when folded.. this James Baroud Nomad i just tested though, big miss, i actually felt bad editing the review today haha. i think if you’re worried about time, worried about height of vehicle and you’re on the shorter side these clamshells are a great option.

    Great video. For the crossbar, do you know if the foot (side attachment on the RTT) will fit Thule aeroblade or evo-wing bars?

    • @BRollOffroad
      @BRollOffroad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is something we’re working on getting fixed.. Yes the feet will attach but currently the feet only come with the bars so kind of no point as of now. If you already have those Thule bars I suppose you could sell them and get this whole bar/feet kit from Area BFE which are $299. I’ll try to remember to update you once the feet are available by themselves. Thanks for watching!

    I am deciding between this and the Roofnest Falcon. I know they are made in the same factories, but what are the major differences?

    • @BRollOffroad
      @BRollOffroad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      the main physical one is the rubber seal between top and bottom sections. Roofnest has a single pipe, like a O if you cut into it while ABFE has dual stacked rubber like an 8, so twice as thick. other than the vents it’s pretty minor differences (and RN may have added them by now) but the main one would be customer service.

    Great review. I reeeeally like this style of RTT, in fact it's the only type of RTT I would consider using. Having to toss a sleeping bag up there is a non-issue...I have to move my sleeping bag AND my cot to and from my ground tent anyway. Boy it ain't cheap though is it.
    I could've used that sound deadening feature last week...had to camp in an actual campground and was awakened by a 6am domestic disturbance a few sites down the way. Fella threw every piece of gear he had into the back of his flatbed as hard as he could before roaring his diesel out of camp. Made it as far as the campground entrance before he eventually came crawling back. More drama ensued but I'd given up on sleep at that point.

    • @BRollOffroad
      @BRollOffroad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thanks and yea doesn't bother me one bit, everything has pros and cons but the speed makes up for having to toss things in there.
      dang if only it was that good, that's crazy though. i've only run into something like that one time and back then i was in my car, even rolling up the windows didn't help anything. the worst i've had was a hunter in a diesel pulling into my campsite at 5am, idling for 10mins, getting out and shooting a deer 50yds away then taking off. this was a TINY site off of Goose Creek clearly meant only for the 2 cars we had there.

    All the RTT are shown in arid environments, but how do they perform in rain? This one looks like the aluminum tray would hold water..

    • @BRollOffroad
      @BRollOffroad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      since i camp year round i plan on taking a bunch of tents out this winter and filming some serious tests. my 2nd trip out with this one we did have some heavy rain for about 20mins and then steady rain all night, no problems. the top has an eave over the fabric and then down the side so all good there and the bottom half has a molded lip/wall where the fabric meets so there won’t be any pooling. water runs down the fabric and to the outside of the lip then off the bottom shell.

      haha not sure if you think that’s high or low since it’s right in the middle of a $1,200-$1,500 23ZERO/Tepui/CVT and a $4,500-$5,500 James Baroud/GFC.

  • @jankie55
    @jankie55 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For the price, I couldn't justify something like this over the 23zero's. The only thing I can see that makes it definitively better is saving 3 minutes on setup time, and having a lower profile. Out of the two tents, what is your favorite?

      6’ 1”, i’m a side sleeper but i haven’t been good to my body over the years. i do a lot of stretching, tossing and turning before i get there and i could do it comfortable in there. probably depends on what you’re used to also.

    If its made in the same factory as roofnest. Hard pass. Cvt all the way. They have aluminum ones too.

    • @BRollOffroad
      @BRollOffroad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      same factory doesn’t necessarily mean same product.. but also bad news, CVT comes from the same factory as well.
