  • Smartphones and digital downloads have helped make audio recordings of books a billion-dollar industry, with more than 45,000 new audiobooks recorded last year alone. Correspondent David Pogue talks with actors Laurence Fishburne, Jesse Eisenberg and Scott Brick, and thriller writer Brad Meltzer, about this expanding chapter in book publishing.

Long before audiobooks there was Recording for the Blind. My dad worked on the recording booths and told me how many actors auditioned to be readers (all volunteer), but very few made the cut. The most challenging books to read were science books where the reader had to narrate charts, tables and graphs. Recording for the Blind provided books for those who were visually impaired, especially college students.

Scott Brick is one of my favorites. I will buy a book just because he is the narrator. I have been a long time audio book listener. They are really good to listen to while cleaning, driving and crafting. Time flies.

Everybody acts like listening to a book being read aloud is a neat new big deal thing, but throughout history, people read aloud for entertainment in very many social contexts and situations. Women from several neighborhood families would gather in the afternoons at each other's houses to do handwork -- sewing and darning of clothes, knitting, embroidery, quilting, etc., -- and they would take turns reading aloud from the latest novel to the rest of the group. It was a thing you did at parties -- couples would gather at other people's houses for an evening's entertainment of listening to someone read aloud or recite poetry. A father or older child would read aloud to the family in the evenings. Some of Charles Dicken's novels were published in serialized format as an ongoing feature of a popular magazine, and people would have parties and have someone read aloud the latest installment. And, in fact, Dickens did readings from his novels to auditoriums full of people on a regular basis.

listening to a track isn't reading.. dont kid yourself. You and everyone else who pretends you are avid readers by listening to an entertaining voice read a book are not reading. Reading requires the readers inner voice, it's that relationship between written word and inner voice that creates a different sort of comprehension and poetry. You are simply being entertained when you listen to someone read a book to you. Not the same thing.

I started listening to audiobooks when I was making a long commute probably 20 years ago. I had gotten to the point where I hated to get in the car and was considering quitting rather than doing it anymore. Having the next part of a book to look forward to got me through it. Now I download them to my MP3 and listen while doing things I dislike like grocery shopping, cleaning house, walking my dog, and especially when I am making a long trip. They have been a godsend!

There used to be (and still is to some extent) a stigma around audiobooks. *“That’s not real reading.”* As if you’re less intelligent or don’t absorb the same information by listening to a book as opposed to reading it. My reading skills are fine, but I’ve found I absorb information much better when I hear it read aloud. Fiction or nonfiction I love it all though. I just wish they weren’t so pricey! Not to mention physically reading a book tends to make me sleepy. 🤷🏼‍♂️😉 I usually try to get them with free trials though & have my own little collection.

Someone reading to you is entertainment, its not the same as you reading written words and the nuance of the language and its symbiotic relationship to your inner emotions and thoughts.

I download all my audiobooks for free. I will not pay the outrageous fees these companies ask for. 30 plus dollars for an audiobook? I don't think so.

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Also, the audiobook industry will be completely dead within the next 10 years. Voice synthesis technology has grown by Leaps and Bounds in just over the past five years. Google has bought out text to speech companies that sound so realistic you would be very hard-pressed to tell the difference between it and an actual human reader. Audiobook distribution must be priced fairly or suffer the same fate as Blockbuster and all physical related media.
