    Hi Patty, I have something you might find interesting relating to my resurrection jars. I have about a dozen gallon jars that half of which I set up a few months ago from material I gathered from different sources at the last minute before freeze up last winter. The others are various ages, some even a few years old, and I just add water as needed. I have some goldfish breeding projects with lots of fry in several half barrels tubs indoors that are a lot of work to keep up with. All the goldfish are pond types, both wakins, and shubunkins, that I have color projects I"m working on. Out of curiousity I decided to drop a couple fry in each jar to see what would happen. I was blown away by how much faster they have grown compared to the ones I'm working so hard to care for in the tubs. The jars are in south facing windows mostly shaded by the roof overhang, no heat, no supplemental feeding, and the fry have grown double the size in about 3 weeks compared to the ones in the tubs. In the tubs I'm doing about 90% water changes a couple times a week, feeding 3 times a day with bbs, steamed eggs, and golden pearls. The tubs have large foam filters, and no plants. They have heaters that I kept at 72 F at first, but now have raised to 76. I'm disappointed at the growth in the tubs compared to the jars. The tubs are pretty crowded with fry, but volume wise all the fry wouldn't add up to a very large fish weight wise at all. Unreal all the little critters, algae and plant growth in the jars that are feeding those fry. The temperature fluctuates a lot in the jars too. I wasn't sure if the fry would even survive at first.

      Wow that’s amazing! It does make sense though. I had summer tubs last year with guppies and they had so many babies and grew fast outside with all the life that lived in the tubs compared to the tanks inside. Thank you for sharing this awesome knowledge and thank you greatly for watching 😁👍

      Thank you very much! You are absolutely correct with the floating plants. I have duckweed in all my tanks and some salvinia natans in some. Not sure why the algae bloom started in this tank. Haven’t changed anything and the plants have been taking off but the guppies love it because I have had an explosion of baby fry. So that makes up for it😁 Thank you for watching 😁👍

    Great update video. I must say the 20 gallon long is probably my favorite.
    I would really love to see you get a few American Flag fish. They absolutely love string algae.. they will eat it all and need minimal requirements.
    They can get a bit nippy with slow moving fish.
    I have tried to black out the tank to get rid of the bacteria. I have only had that with sand tanks too..
    Does that algae smell? If so it's probably bacteria

    Looks good Patty. Cyano bacteria is a nitrogen fixer. It theives in low nitrate, not high. To be more exact, it thrives when nitrate is relative low compared to phosphate. I would measure phosphate as that is often the main problem. It should never be higher than 1/10 of nitrate. In your case, not more than 1ppm. The cure is often to increase nitrate as that is more natural than removing phosphate. Plants will thank you and outcompete the cyano.

    • @pattys_aquatics
      @pattys_aquatics  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you! That’s where it can get confusing. Trying to do research for the causes I find , high nitrate, low nitrate, high phosphate, low flow.
      I was doing some testing and found my phosphates at 2ppm. I’m currently documenting the process trying to remove it without meds. So I truly appreciate your input because that makes total sense. Thank you and thank you for watching 😁👍

      @@pattys_aquatics that is why I go back to the biology instead of general aquarium advices. In biology it is already described and advices based on anectotal evidence is avoided. Cyano fixates nitrogen gas from the air. Or in your case nitrogen gas from the anaerobic substrate. Not from nitrate.

      Thank you very much Ken, so far so good with the resurrection jars. The ones in the 75 the leaf litter broke down in less than two weeks and the one I added in this video is heading towards that same time frame. Oak leaves take longer to break down so I have been adding those to supplement when the original litter starts to disappear. And in fact just this morning I added my remaining jars into a few tanks ( upcoming video alert in the coming weeks😁) just need to collect a few more to get all my tanks.

    The excess algae, yes some fast growing stem plants, but the light is quite intense, perhaps raise the lights a few inches on blocks, or maybe also reduce the photo period to only 6 hours for a week or two, but nothing looks at all unrecoverable to me. But bright green filamentous algae does basically like the same broad conditions as plants, so how to boost plants but not algae? You might also try some laterite pellets in the substrate to boost plant growth and if green water is an issue, honestly an internal with a UV will solve the problem within days.
    The blue green - I honestly think you need a decent filter and, UV again, that might make a significant difference, especially if it is picking up debris from the substrate surface, and thus collecting and killing bacteria. Also a decent sized filter with Nitrate absorbent/phosphate chemical resin, to make sure Nitrate and Phosphate are consistently low, puffers are a big load on a tank, but yes 10 ppm Nitrate shouldn't cause the problem but you may have spikes after feeding of Ammonia, Phosphate and Nitrate that you are missing. Phosphate is the major cause of algae blooms in rivers and lakes. A shorter photoperiod again might also help, a boast CO2 and reduce the advantage of long photoperiods to algae, I tend to step up from 6, to 7 to 8 or 9 hours, rarely do I light a tank for more than 8 hours.
    But overall tanks look great especially for such a simple system. And I note the change with aeration.
    I aim for Nitrate levels

    • @pattys_aquatics
      @pattys_aquatics  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow, another comment jam packed with knowledge 😁.
      I have a small UV sterilizer I have used in the past for when I occasionally got green water and could use it but wanted to let it ride out to see if and when it would go away and if I had to make changes to do so. Currently it has gotten better and haven’t done anything except a small water change.
      As for the Cyanobacteria, this too I wanted to try to eliminate it without using meds this time and I’m documenting everything I do with it for a video. That being said I found my phosphates to be high in the tank. Possibly from the broken down organic material from the resurrection jar … I’m not sure. So I’m trying a few things to correct it. The lighting period is definitely something I will explore and thank you for the tips.
      I read the article you linked and it is very interesting and informative. It’s funny cause I actually have read some material from that webpage before. Very cool and thank you very much for sharing not only the link but once again your wealth of knowledge it truly is greatly appreciated. Thanks for watching William😁👍

    I find these types of video far more interesting than a lot of the tank content out there. What is the name of that spindly plant in the puffer tank with the algae on it. Looks really cool! I love that hex tank. I used to have one and it was so hard for me to get down to the bottom to clean or move things. That was the first tank I bought when I had my first job and it was unique (back in the 80's).

      Thank you very much, I try to mix it up, I will do videos on different things I do or am working with in my fishroom but it’s also nice to just sort of vlog and take you around with me as I do things.
      That plant if I’m thinking of the one you’re asking about is Pogostemon Stellatus Octopus. It’s one of my favorites, grows like a weed.
      I’m loving that hex tank as well. It has transformed over the years for me. It started as a holding tank for goldfish I had when they were small and was bare bottom then dirted it and the plants have really started taking off. I like the tall part of it so the plants can grow larger.
