    Something that I may not have conveyed clearly in this video is that I'm not having a go at the Lao Government, not at all. I'm quite happy with how things are here, and the last thing I want to see is all those different types of revenue raising systems introduced here that are screwing the everyday punter back home. My dig is at those people who choose Laos to live because of the very cheap cost of living but endlessly complain because they don't have first world infrastructure. I was just pointing out why and how developed countries can have good roads compared to Laos. Do you really think your developed country would have such great roads without all the taxes, levies and revenue raising that goes on...?

    It's like that in every country in the world to a degree. Harriet and I lived in Boston, Ma. U.S,. until we moved to Virginia , , they built a road project that started at hundreds of millions and ended at around 4 billion . The project was called " The Big Dig in Boston" Imagine the cost of repairing your vehicle . All the best Guys 👍👍 Jim and Harriet

      Even if Laos get a big chunk of money donated by other developed country to help fix all those roads, the Lao government will just keep every penny in his own pocket instead of repairing the roads. It is how corrupted they are. If anyone was caught committing a crime in Laos, all you have to do is pay them big $$ under the table and they will let you go. This is why they are falling behind.

    Alot of the roads are in disrepair, mainly because it was poorly built in the first place then you have 10-12 wheelers going through the local roads. Banging it up as they go along.

    • @Wapiman
      @Wapiman 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, very nice road. Roads are built with pavement that is very thin which will break down fairly quickly. Many, many roads and bridges have been built fairly recently. The government knows that they have a choice between lots of less expensive roads and fewer, longer lasting roads. An unpaved road that used to take us a couple of hours during the rainy season takes 30 minutes when the road is in good condition and 45 minutes when it gets pretty bad. Overall, when you look at all of the roads, there has been great improvement.

    I was amazed at how good the road was that you took recently that Google Maps did not recognize as a road. It seems to me, as a long-time resident, that the government has wisely picked quantity over quality. I see villagers who were cut off during the rainy season who are now able to sell new types of crops because there are bridges for produce buyers to use. Most of your negative commenters about the government will not have seen that.

      Well.. I kinda hope they don't. Who wants to be paying all those extra fines and levies again 😆 I do complain about the roads now and again, but I understand why they're like that. If I am not mistaking. In my wifes hometown of Phonhong, there is a strong Japanese influence with investors. They have helped substantially, with the local elementary schools and have poured millions of dollars into road improvements. If you have ever been through Phonhong, you will notice that the main roads are pretty nice. The side roads are good too, because the locals all pitch in to build their local roads. So, the idea of foreigners not investing in improving the road infrastructure is not accurate. Obviously, the rural areas will take much more time to make improvements. But, that is what makes Laos so attractive, is the rustic nature of most of the country. @@NowinLao

    Just for the record, here in Washington State, one of the most heavily taxed states in America. We are taxed on roads through a gas tax, property tax and income tax. And we still have some really shitty roads with potholes and broken freeways and bridges. High taxes to fix roads doesnt always work. I will take Laos system any day over our system. With the train, the new freeways and scooters and tuk tuks, getting around in Laos is a no brainer. I forgot to mention the great Mekong River with boat travel., I will take Laos as it is. No complaints here. Modern infrastructure is overrated, in my opinion.

    Seems very short-sighted of the government. If the trucks are ripping up the roads, they should pay a levy to have them fixed. Trucks could go twice as fast on decent roads and they'd make twice as much money, so they should be happy to. The whole thing just looks like a total lack of government doing its job. (You could easily argue the our government does way too much, but doing nothing isn't great either.)

    Country side/highlands don't have a large population so paving the roads is ignored. They could pave the main roads in the highlands but it will be hard to maintain due to lack of funding. Monsoon will wipe away the roads in 1-2 seasons. It can be done but I think the first items of business should be to teach the people to drive, enforce speed limit, and ticket and fine people. For the love of God, don't pile 20 people into a mini-van. Traffic signs in Laos are non-existent. Thanks to USA for GPS and Google Map. The country is doom. The average annual income in Laos is around $2,150 USD Besides that, do you really want to impose a tax system like in America or Australia? That is one main reason we are moving out of Washington State. Excess taxation. Just a suggestion, but for the amount of money you spend on fuel, couldnt you fly to some of your northern destinations?

      You missed what I was getting at Charles. Even though I do whinge about the roads sometimes, my target is those who move here for the much cheaper lifestyle but complain endlessly about the road conditions. Those same people who want to live in a 3rd world country on the cheap but expect 1st class infrastructure. It's cheap here for a reason, and it's not corruption. Corruption is rampant world wide, but the common link to developed countries having good infrastructure is how they tax and fine their citizens. I can tolerate the bad roads rather than being screwed over by the revenue systems back home.
      Fly? That'd make for good content 😐

    Chill out Champ. Just keep doing what you are doing and dont stress over things you cant control. Low to no taxes for the locals is a good thing. You know how roads get fixed. Neighbors pitch in and fund it themself. Out in the country, you wont find that. Just some advice, I would ease up on the criticism of the government. You are dealing with the Lao government. You arent in Australia any more.

Laos as a whole has many, many "good fathers" governmental as private who give money for equipments and infrastructures...but the problem is that a lot is "vanishing" nobody knows where. The "bo bpen niang " mentality as every level is an other reason for this situation.

      Oh I'm not denying that, but the revenue raising streams I mentioned are not here in Laos. massive amounts of money is raised in first world countries through high taxes, high car registration costs, all manner of traffic cameras that all contribute to the good roads we have in more developed countries.

    Yout asking the people of Loas to pay up with something they dont have, money... Thats why the government cant tax the people...Laos doesnt get the revenue from the internatonal investers that Australia gets...Theres no mining or cattle ranching, industrial developement in Laos.. Laos is a 3rd world country.. The Laos people pay everyday, in their blood sweat and tears, just to keep food on the table and warm clothes on their kids...Similar as to Thailand. People of 3rd world countries dont get charged for taxes or fines, because the governments know they dont have the money to pay.. It is what it is...

      American bombers dropped over two million tons of cluster bombs over Laos. The U.S. spent $17 million a day to drop the bombs, but contributed just $61 million between 1993 to 2012 to remove them. Over 270 million cluster bombs were dropped on Laos during the American Secret War in Laos; up to 80 million did not detonate. Over 5 decades on, roughly 10% of these munitions have been destroyed. More than half of all confirmed cluster munitions casualties in the world have occurred in Laos. The Black piece of shit O’Bama, gave Laos 80Million for the clean up in 2014, without an apology. And today America sends over 150Billion to support Ukraine, one of the worlds most corrupt countries. Moral of the Story, How blessed are you to have a wonderful lifestyle and beautiful family to share all of the beauty that is Laos today. Your blessed my friend. Enjoy!@@NowinLao

    Well ol mate after driving 3700 kms of Laos finest roads I do believe I am allowed to put the Pooksters two bobs worth in. Those bloody chinese semi trailers and the companys they drive for should be paying their keep of the roads they are destroying. Honestly mate g the roads in the mountain communities of Pho Kham and Muang Hiam is soul destroying. Do not even start me on road 13 mate. Honestly your subscribers are in the dark on the goings on around Long Tieng down to Muang Hom and the 1000s of semi trailers from china just ruining the road. Poor ol Ho Chi Minh did not have this in store I tell you. Down south we came across awesome parts of road only to watch it go to shit in a heartbeat. The road that really surprised us was the road from Paksan to Vietiane . The last 20 kms is a bloody mess of pot holes and the locals are hosing down the the road God love them. But reality is the Chinese will continue to rob the joint as we know. Sad but reality mate. Yes. Aside from corruption, the hard truth is the government doesn't have enough budget to build or maintain the existing road. Lao government is the largest employer in the country, hundreds of thousands people working for government and most of government budget goes to pay their salary. And a little for fixing the road. And lots of new build roads in Laos came from foreign aids and loan.
