All your videos are amazing, my brain gets so small every time I try to learn what you teach, you are a genius God Bess your talent and your humbleness
A good excercise for me was exploring these inversions on my own with standard harmony knowledge. So i started with a Cmaj7 and later the rest of the diatonic chords from the C maj scale on all posibble stringsets, even with string skipping. Next i altered the chords or put extensions on top in every possible way (still practicing this). It took a lot of time(years) to find all those chords and get them into the fingers and using them. I'm not using all stringsets that i learned because i forgot some of them and mostly i use the stingset that Jens is showing us here. After a while using them it gets into your playing for sure.
Thanks, Jens! I know & can grip all of these chords...but this video will help me apply them to 'real-life' jazz as may be encountered in a smokey cool venue near you!
I am totally guilty of spending too much time just learning the inversions and no practicing them in a song context. I will try and work on that more. Thanks for another great lesson Jens!
Hi Jen’s! You’ve helped me grow to love jazz and this learning process and I’m ready to finally join your patreon. I’m curious if tabs for lessons like these are included in the $1 per week membership or the $3 and up ones? I appreciate what you do!
Awesome! Thank you! The downloads for lesson like this are already from $1, but if you are looking to learn Jazz in a more step-by-step way then I think the Jazz Guitar Roadmap would be a better option than Patreon for you.
Great video, this is the same thing I been doing . I like to also practice superimposing the forms over things Using these basic forms. Maj6 Min6 Dim7 Dom7b5 Almost all these can be superimposed on a tonic/ or subdom/ or Dom/ section in a song. Its another way I like to add dimension . Then I like to connect arpeggios scales and enclosure to the voicings used
Hello Jens I am on the level where your vidéos correspond exactly at the things I want to learn in improvisation. My main problem is that I m not a specialist in jazz impro, I love practicing it but all musics interrest me thus I do not focus on a spécial one (here, jazz impro with voicings). , your approach of teaching is at a didactic way really, really complete and full of informations... I thank you for sharing with us. I do not know but I think that to achieve a high level in improvisation (meaning I can play what I hear in my head), I have to focus on it . It is not possible without focusing. .. And I cannot for every musics are passionnant to study for me.. Sometimes I feel a bit "lost": Specializing or not specializing in a kind of music style ? I think we cannot achieve a high level without focusing on a spécial one but I cannot practice jazz impro every day for all kind of musics are a new discovering for me, every day is thus different in my practice . improvising is really what I want to achieve that is playing notes, melodies mixed with chords etc which van become kind of "talking words "; they carry a meaning that the listener understand. Well, thanks again Jens...so much work in music !!!! it is an infinite cosmos !!!!
Well, I only really focus on Jazz. That is the music I love and the music I want to teach, so maybe I am not the right place for you to search. You could try to check out this post: jenslarsen.nl/how-to-learn-jazz-guitar-suggestions-to-begin-studying/ to get some suggestions!
I break drop2 into sets of 4 strings top, middle then low sets strings , from there convert to drop3 ordrop2&4 by spacing the notes more raising one the notes an octave higher
the shell voicing movement and inversions rapidly ascending appears to be one of the common strategies i've seen in bands like polyphia and modern 'math-pop' or whatever it's called lol. That's super interesting and a cool application of the pseudo-incorrectness of moving those shell voicings in a successful way, as in how they approach them with more of a passing shred of a chord, then allowing it to rest. hope that makes some sense lol great vid thx again
Could you make a playlist of your videos which will help jazz beginer like me who just knows the basic chords and arpegios, to step by step progress further...?
The videos don't really work like that, but you could try to check out this post: jenslarsen.nl/how-to-learn-jazz-guitar-suggestions-to-begin-studying/ to get some suggestions!
excellent guitar teacher and lessons!! the neck of your guitar seems very long and allows you to easily reach high fret (22 and more ...) which guitar do you use?
Hi Jens, another great lesson. Thanks very much! Question: whenever you write "Get the PDF on Patreon!", which Patreon level gives access to these PDFs? I am getting really tired of doing screen captures and would also like to support you keeping doing these lessons. Thanks! /C
Its seems like as more time goes on the " Easy" part is learning the theory, playing songs ,practicing the shapes forms and just understanding the music in general. But the hard part is making things with the same quality as charlie parker or Louis Armstrong or fats navarro
One thing I'm facing is sight-reading chords notated on the staff, figuring out how best to play them as they're written quickly, and how to get better at that.
That has to do with me experimenting with different looks and people having different tastes mostly. Actually the more dramatic light mostly seems to get positive comments.
Hope you are having a great day! I am relaxing a bit on my birthday and working on the online course

Jens Larsen haha it was a very nice touch 😂
nice lesson, very easy arrangement but nice sound :- ) Happy belathed Birthday Jan :-)
Muito bom.. meu amigo Obrigado..!!
You are very welcome 🙂
I also understand that what you say is of course genuine and solid theory, but I wanted to point something new here...
Where do I get the PDF for this? Great lesson as always 🔥
excellent guitar teacher and lessons!! the neck of your guitar seems very long and allows you to easily reach high fret (22 and more ...) which guitar do you use?
Thank you Fred! I am using an Ibanez AS2630. I don't think it is very different from most other 335 type semihollows :)
Thanks for a great lesson. I was wondering, what is the name of the tune you play at 9:00 ? It is a lovely chord melody, and I’d like to learn it.
Hi Jens, another great lesson. Thanks very much! Question: whenever you write "Get the PDF on Patreon!", which Patreon level gives access to these PDFs? I am getting really tired of doing screen captures and would also like to support you keeping doing these lessons. Thanks! /C
The PDFs are from the lowest level on Patreon which is $1 per week 🙂
Thanks! You just got a new subscriber. Keep it up!
Does one also get retroactive access or only going forward?
Awesome... may i ask your guitar and your amp in this video? ☺️
Thank you! It is an Ibanez AS2630 and I am using a Fractal Audio AX8 🙂
Hi jens what is the brand of your metronome please and by the way late happy birthday

Hi Jens
Do you have a course directed at Latin/Brazilian style such as Bossa Nova, Samba, Partido Alto etc. thanks Nick australia
Do you mean something like this th-cam.com/video/E8HM4RewNII/w-d-xo.html
Jens Larsen yes thanks. Do you offer a more detailed course that can be taken over time also
@@nickowen1480 not for this topic, I am just getting started with the longer courses 🙂
Jens Larsen
Hi Jens, if you could keep me posted ( on your mailing list) re longer courses. Many thanks Nick Melbourne Australia
@@nickowen1480 Thank you! I certainly will
One thing I'm facing is sight-reading chords notated on the staff, figuring out how best to play them as they're written quickly, and how to get better at that.
Chris It’s not a useless skill, but how much time is it worth? really?
If you need to do that a lot then just work on it. I spend quite some time on the Joe Pass chord solos and that really helped :)
@@shawndimery However much one might value being able to read music.
@@JensLarsen I bet!
Chris Yeah I’m not dismissing the skill, just found it an interesting thing to specifically practice
I could apply this with the triads????
Yes of course :)
What do you mean with two five one etc?
Can you give me a time in the video?
@@JensLarsen i don’t exactly remember where but it’s about chord progressions
@@FlamesWolf yes, well then I am not sure if I can really answer you correctly.
@@JensLarsen at 5:08
@@FlamesWolf That is explained in this video: th-cam.com/video/TPAj4GJDbY0/w-d-xo.html
Jens, if you keep on giving us useful advice. We gonna ended up practicing for the next 3 months without watching your newer video. 😂
I just hold a 5th string root diminished chord and walk around chromatically, 30% chance of success lol
I get the concept, but I think your math is off :)
@@JensLarsen I guess I'll just have to keep watching and learning from you. Thank you so much, I love your videos!
Jens - Some of your videos have great lighting - some are shadowy - not so good. - Why is that?
That has to do with me experimenting with different looks and people having different tastes mostly. Actually the more dramatic light mostly seems to get positive comments.
"in this case I am using a dominant for the 2 chord", you mean 6 cord
A7 is the dominant for the II? I think that is what I am saying? I don't see it as a VI chord, it is a secondary dominant.
Who stole your guitar at about 2 minutes in ... ? 🤔
The aliens!
@@JensLarsen So WEIRD to see you WITHOUT a guitar, and waving your hands around instead!?! :-D
