Radiation Therapist here ( 20 years experience) and former breast cancer patient who also received radiation from my radiation friends. I agree with most of what Dr. Amy stated but would like to clarify about the ointments. Do not have any ointments, lotions or skin creams of any kind on your skin prior to getting your radiation treatment. This will make your skin reddening worse. A few more tips would be: Keep the area getting radiation exposure out of the sun. You do not want to get a sunburn and then get radiation. For breast patients getting radiation, do not wear deodorant under the arm you are getting treated. You can wear a natural, aluminum free deodorant if your doctor approves it. Metal tracings in the deodorant like aluminum, can interact with the radiation and cause your skin to breakdown. Part of our job as a therapist is to keep an eye on your skin and we will grab the doctor to look at it if needed or if there are concerns. Most places where you receive radiation you will see your radiation oncologist once a week to check in with you and see how you are doing. He/she will also check your skin at this time. Good luck to you all. ❤

That what all doctors from some of the best cancer centers in the world recommend! NOTHING, not even oily shower gels, no creams, especially no ANY oil, during radiations! After the last treatment you can use as much but nothing before the last one.

Thanks for your opinion. As with any hospital facility and specialized department, each physician has their own way of treating and what they allow and don’t. Many radiation departments in the United States don’t allow any cream or lotion on the skin because it can interfere with the radiation and make skin irritation worse. I’ve been a radiation therapist for many years and even when I was a patient receiving radiation in 2022 at a different facility where I worked, they also didn’t allow any cream, lotions, or deodorant on your skin before receiving radiation. Certainly, Australia may have different protocols and creams they allow and that’s ok. I’m simply stating what’s “typical” here in the states. As a well seasoned radiation therapist, I am simply sharing my opinion on here of what I have learned and seen in the clinic.

Receiving 41 rounds of radiation no joke. Do not use any type of cream/ointment prior to and during treatment. My oncologists recommended using non-scented cream ~30 minutes after. I used cream they provided, later CeraVe moisturizing cream. Very important to keep area well lubricated. Drink loads of water, eat what you can and when. Do not get in sun and no pools. I was not able to eat, eventually could not drink water-very sick. Prepare yourself mentally and physically.

I'm currently just finishing up 5 weeks of radiation (3 more sessions left) and would recommend that anyone going through radiation keep up with their exercise program. I work out (strength training and cardio) about 5 days a week and haven't experienced any fatigue. I read that this was a great way to limit the fatigue and I can attest to the fact that it WORKS!

I had the 3 weeks of more intense radio therapy vs 5 weeks. I used the cream they gave me after treatment and before bed. 3 times on weekend days. My breast changed color but never had itching or pain. I feel it was do to being faithful with the cream . Also wearing a soft fabric sports bra helped. Felt tired once in a while. Eating properly also helped.

Rectal cancer here. I'm about 6 months post ileostomy surgery. I had 7 biweekly sessions of FOLFOX, then proceeded to 28 (6 weeks) m-f session of IMRT. The worst part of radiation therapy was having to wear a clunky chemo pump m-f for 5FU. I guess I got really lucky. I didn't see any side effects from radiation until the last few days. I then developed a red rash in the areas they radiated. It wasn't even in time to address it with the Dr, and not bad enough worry about it now.
I did get fatigue in the last couple weeks. I thought it was the chemo. The fatigue hit me any time I engaged in strenuous activity. I resumed wakeboarding and foil boarding about 3 1/2 months after surgery. In the last couple of weeks it became apparent that I would get exhausted after a short time. Now I just need to wait and see what other problems I may develop from the radiation. I'm dealing with mild neuropathy from the chemo. Hope that goes away.
I figured I would share my story to give others hope that it is possible that radiation can be pretty easy in some cases. Hope I'm not speaking too soon.

I brought up nutrition questions and hydration to my RO, was told it didn’t matter. On my own I researched a diet for healthy skin and focused on protein. These were test questions that he failed big time. I also asked for an idea of a lotion with no alcohol, he had none and staff refused to help find one. I was on my own but ended up with the healthiest radiated skin my PS worked with doing my own thing, including making my own organic salve. Was not well liked but had good results. Yes, my care was switched to someone else for many reasons.

Radiation Therapist here. Radiation to the brain does not cause changes to your taste buds. Radiation can cause fatigue in all areas that we treat, although for the most part, radiation is site specific. Brain radiation can cause you to lose your hair, but it won’t cause changes in your mouth. Your taste bud issues are most likely from chemo as I had this as well.

My 30 day radiation for colorectal cancer went well until the final week. the burning became so painful and increased for the next few weeks. it was unbearable. now, 2 months later, I am experiencing radiation induced bone breaks. pelvis and tailbone. I'm in chemo now and the combination of chemo and the pain from the breaks has made me very discouraged and ready to call it quits. only 2 more chemos to go. oxaliplatin and then folfox in a pump for 48 hrs. my bloodwork says that I'm handling it well. I have a healthy appetite at least! I can barely walk even with a walker, take massive amounts of Tylenol and ibuprofen together but the pain is excruciating. until this happened I was continuing to work, walk my dog in the woods, garden, dance...you get it! now I feel like the oldest woman on the planet and really wonder if I'll ever get back at least some of my life. trying to stay positive and optimistic, but I don't like what these treatments have done to me.....but I like your videos and advice...

Not know is that the radiation makes your breast shrink and became smaller than before that is a good thing and now even the team stating that I do not need a radiation at this time on my left breast I have an appointment with the radiation Dr to see if I need a radiation or not. Good luck to everyone and have a great day.

Is it not good for someone who is going on therapy (colorectal) to have cough and colds but not because of sickness but because of being exposed to the cold breeze outside the house late? Hoping you could share your thoughts/feedback. Thanks!

I have a sarcoma called leiomyosarcoma in my left ankle. Radiation has been a nightmare. 6 to go,but my foot looks like it's been in a fire. Can't walk. Sarcoma are rare cancers, doesn't respond to radiation or chemo,so don't know why they use it,guess it's all they have then surgery. But I know survival rate is very low qirh these cancers, why I am thinking about not being sick anymore from tge treatments that won't help anyway. I think I am done. I may have cancer, but I felt fine until they started to poison me with radiation. They're using the highest dose on me,tho pet scan shows no tumors anywhere else right now,but that can change tomorrow, for it travels thru blood stream not lymphatic system. What few stories I found out there, even after doing everything, even surgery it comes back. I really didn't want to go thru this,my family told me I had to try. For what? Waste precious time I could be enjoying life instead of Dr's and treatments everyday. An it's just the beginning. Make memories while you can. You're gonna have to be strong so she can. Many prayers for you both.
