    1999 225 Johnson ocean pro . Recent added oil to the tank . And she sat for about 10 tena in the slip . I saw Oil film on the top while just running in idle . Freaking out is. Understatement! I just had the lower rebuilt a few weeks . So I’m hoping this is my problem as well. I can actually sleep tonight after seeing this video .thought it was my power trim first . Thanks this video is serving.

    My outboard is doing the same thing. Leaking from the prop. Looks like sludge. I bought all the lower seals already too. After watching your video. Man! It’s the same thing like yours. I wasn’t pushing it hard enough to burn the oil and fuel mixture. Thanks a million Rob for making this video. Keep it coming.

    Excelent video! I have the same issue with my 1990 6 hp Johnson. It was idling at low speed for about 20 mins in the flush tank. I could see blackish oil around fin area of lower unit and that small hole in lower unit. I had just replaced lower unit with new green color gear oil, so I knew it wasn't that. Thanks for the explanation makes sense. Good job man!

    This puts me a little more at ease. Have been tinkering in the cold months, now pull starts super easy but had what I thought was gear oil leaking... Same weep as yours. Ran it like you did and no more crap. Thanks bud!

    Thanks for the info! That explains what I’m seeing too! No water visible when I drained the oil. But last time out on the lake lots of idling... am replacing the lower seals and o ring as they are already ordered... good info in the video “old timer”! 😉

    I had the same issue...bought all the parts to replace lower unit seals and water pump...watched a bunch of how to videos and it was looking a bit more complicated than i thought...then I watched your video. HUH!! It's leaking in the same spots AND I use my motor to troll at very low speeds 95% of the time...so I'm thinking...it's probably the same issue. Think i'll hang on to the parts and try the motor for another weekend and see what happens...change the leg oil one more time after the weekend. And i'll run it at higher speeds to get try and burn off the excess oil. Thanks Man!!!

    Merc Manual:
    "Note color of gear lubricant when draining. If the color is white or cream it MAY indicate the presence of water in lubricant. Gear lubricant which has been drained from a gear case recently in operation will have a yellowish color due to lubricant agitation/aeration. Gear lube which is mixed with assembly lubricant (Special Lube 101 or 2-4-C w/Teflon) will also be creamy white in color. This is normal and should not be confused with the presence of water. If water is suspected to be present in the gearcase, a pressure check of the gearcase should be completed by an authorized dealer. Pouring a portion of the gear lubricant into a glass jar and allowing the lubricant to settle will allow any water in the lube to separate and settle to the bottom of the jar."

    Always remember that there is more to this saying. It is supposed to go like this:
    A Jack Of All Trades
    Is A Master Of None
    But, Oftentimes Better
    Then A Master Of One
    Formerly intended as a compliment, the phrase means that a person is a generalist rather than a specialist, versatile and adept at many things.

    "I'm thinking these old timers are right." 😅 I guess you're an old timer now! Thanks for the video. I just acquired a 25 Johnson and it did the same thing. I'm happy I could confirm my issue with your video.

    Thanks for this video. I have a 1987 Johnson 6hp and a very small amount oil recently dripped from the little holes located at the upper part of the lower unit. I recently tested the motor and ran it for 20 minutes at a low idle speed, so maybe that was the reason the oil came out. Fearing that I had a leak I immediately drained the oil and everything looked normal and in good condition. I took the lower unit off to do do routine service on the water pump and didn't see anything abnormal. I'm going to take your advice and be patient and monitor the situation.

    Omg. I'm having the same problem. I just bought a bass boat, started the motor while attached to the hose, and ran it for awhile. It smoked when I used my main tank but when I switched to the aux tank, it ran allot better. The next morning, I lowered the unit and thick black oil came out. I took off my lower unit and found it was coming from my exhaust and not the lower unit at all. Now I know why. The previous owner must have hit bottom at one point because the prop was bent at the tips. Slightly. (Luckily I was able to use a vice and put it back in shape. Sorta). I'm at ease now that I've seen this video. Thanks allot. A WHOLE LOT.

    Thank You for making this video. I recently went to a lake that had a million , just under the surface trees. You could not see them. had just put on a brand new prop. I hit several under water trees and broke one blade off on the new prop. After the first tree I was just trying to get back off the lake and was of course going very very slow.also with motor trimmed up some. After trailering, I noticed the same oil leaking from the top weep hole, Looks like the same thing You are explaining!!! I will take your advice and try Your method! Thanks again!

    Easy way to check if your seals are holding Is having to pump a pressure holder see if she's holding the psi she requires.

    So its safe to say on my 9.9 with no spark my repeated tries of starting just filled the exhaust with unburnt fuel causing this leak? I was about ready to throw in the towel on her.

    Good Video I have a lot of black oil dripped out after a day out where the motor ran perfectly now will not crank or start after stalling while I was flushing at home with hose connected any advice on what this could be would be appreciated, its a 50 hp Johnon 1990 model. Cheers

    All old outboards have an oil slick behind them especially johnsons and evinrudes and all of that old dirty oil shot out because you haven't ran it hard enough recently so it just built up a little but it won't hurt anything

    • @daniellockwood291
      @daniellockwood291 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rob Here trev2323 trev2323 that's because oil builds up in the carbs and the exhaust when you don't run it fast for all Long period of time, it won't hurt anything it just won't run as smoth

    • @daniellockwood291
      @daniellockwood291 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rob Here trev2323 trev2323 thats why they smoke more when you idle for a long period of time.

      fox river seems to be a hot place for catfish but I'm not much of a catfisherman. Been having good luck with smallies though out of the fox river but it's so low now i'm afraid to take my fiberglass fishing boat out. When I got home yesterday I took my prop off and found about 4 ft of fishing line all intertwined in the outer seal, removed it all and am gonna test for leaks again. fingers crossed cuz getting those seals out seems like a pain

    Super good video but if this is a 2 stroke you should NEVER run it out of gas to burn it off. The gas has oil in it to lubricate the motor. If you burn it up you at serious risk of messing up your 2stroke
