Just played this last night with my group and it was a huge win. Wound up playing it twice. There is a lot more strategy than I was thinking, and the marking and rulers are actually worked very well into the game. We used wet erase markers which were easier to see and harder to accidentally rub off. Definitely a must-play, and depending on your group could be a must-own.
Have to love how Tom does reviews, really streight to the point thinking about all aspects and tells the cold truth, it would be easy to say this game is different and cool but he says it how he always does ;)
You probably dont give a shit but if you're stoned like me during the covid times you can watch all of the new series on instaflixxer. I've been watching with my gf these days =)
This one looks like it would be great for kids. Especially with the adults playing Long Jon. Definitely will pick this one up to try when I get a chance.
Rodney Henry this is what I was thinking too. Would be fun for me playing Long John and my kids/nieces playing the treasure hunters! I don’t think I would play with adults personally.
This game initially looked really good but why didnt they use hexes to measure the miles and straight lines or have a 2 sided board to let us choose which way to play
Because larger hexes would mean far fewer near-misses, and smaller hexes would make the gameplay fiddly and annoying. To me, counting X number of hexes in every single direction in order to draw around the searched area sounds incredibly tedious compared to just drawing a circle. Not all games need to be designed for super-exact tournament play; sometimes it's best to just go with whatever is the most fun. Besides, a map without hexes makes everything feel that much more real and limitless. Every tiny little detail on the map could be a waypoint, especially given the breadth of the possible hint cards. Not to mention, a hex map looks *incredibly* un-pirate-like.
Theme looks awesome and, while it does seem a bit fiddly, I believe my group would enjoy this a lot. Only thing that worries me is that he said it was hard for Long John Silver to win. May need a house ruling of some kind
This was what I was thinking as I watched the review. It seems with all those clues, and large search, etc., that it's going to be very hard for the Long John player to win.
i know, 4 years later but we played it yesterday and long john almost won. it was acutally the very last action before him that revealed the treasure! what a thrill!
Why wasn’t this a Miami Dice segment? I think this game would have benefited from all three of your views. I would have liked to have heard Sam’s view.
I went to Cambridge Dictionary website and played the audio of the proper pronunciation to see if maybe Tom knew something we didn't.... and he is indeed pronouncing it weird.
I'm looking for a deeper version of Tobago. I thought this might be it. After the review I see it's not. Can someone please make Advanced Tobago? Something where you can lead people to the wrong treasure. Or where being cleaver is needed to decipher the meaning of the clues.
Tom, the whiteboard markers - what is the diameter of those things ( in mm idealy) where it fits into the compass for drawing arcs? This will tell whether we can just buy off the shelf replacement whiteboard markers from an office supply store when the ones that it comes with dry up.
Seems unique, but probably not for me. Looks to be on the fiddly side and I'm not sure I like the fact that it seems extremely hard to win as Long John Silver. Still though, cool artwork and an interesting idea
I would think of Long John Silver as more of a GM role than the competitive aspect. I would love to be LJS and try to make an interesting game for the others playing it, I might pick this one up and try it with my gf and her kids.
@@Phelixc That's a cool way of looking at it, would probably work well in the parent vs kids setting for sure. Still though, for me I think I would always end up as LJS in my group, so I'd be happier if I had a fighting chance haha
Just because it's been done before doesn't mean anyone's stopping them from doing it. With how quickly board games pop up and die out, it would not surprise me to find out that the companies don't bother trademarking most titles (That, or the name it too generic to trademark). Heck, I work at a warehouse, and we currently have multiple games, from different publishers, under the name "Virus".
at 5:20 when you explain the "move 3 miles & small search" action, you didn't specify that the pirate may choose to do the search first and THEN move 3 miles. Though to be fair your video is more of a rough overview of the rules for the watcher to get a basic idea of the game, not a comprehensive rules explain.
thanks for the review.but it seems its too fiddly.matagot will have betters things this year anyway.western legends and kemet:seth looks better for me.
Really wish the gameplay would have been a bit simplistic...Worker placement + deck building type game... Love the theme...Love treasure island BUT didn't like the game mechanics one bit!
The LJS player has to play with a "host" mindset, i.e. "I'm not likely to win, but how can I make it competitive among the other players?" Being a manipulative jerk helps, too.
The game should be infinitly better if the long john silver player doesn't play 'to win' but rather 'to moderate the competition'. Because then he's focused on the 'job' and less likely to make mistakes, thus decreasing fiddliness...
If you want deduction and theme you are way better off with Fury Of Dracula 3th edition. I was so interested, but now it seems like a waste of very beautiful art. Best box cover in years, but a very fiddly game...

@Dash Felipe Yup, been watching on InstaFlixxer for since december myself :D
I MUST BUY this game. I’ve not seen a game that appealed to me this much in years! Thanks for the review!!
Just played this game with my family. We all had a great time! What an awesome game 😁
This seems like a lighter, kid-friendly Fury of Dracula, and I mean that in a good way. I love Fury but don't get it played as much as I would like.
Most importantly: shorter!
Looks decent, but all over the place. Wish they would just reprint Tobago already(with the same art, and components)
This game initially looked really good but why didnt they use hexes to measure the miles and straight lines or have a 2 sided board to let us choose which way to play
Because this was their design vision?

13:13, yup. Had that happen as Long John. First move, my friend found the treasure by pure luck.
Theme looks awesome and, while it does seem a bit fiddly, I believe my group would enjoy this a lot. Only thing that worries me is that he said it was hard for Long John Silver to win. May need a house ruling of some kind

Love the tie! We've had a vintage red gumball machine like that since I was a kid.
Totally had my treasure found in two turns. Friend randomly walked and dugged in the correct spot. Games fun!
Man I love that tie
Why wasn’t this a Miami Dice segment? I think this game would have benefited from all three of your views. I would have liked to have heard Sam’s view.
and Zee!
Drop him a letter and ask him.
This is what I was thinking the whole review. Sam would hate it, but I'm interested what Zee thinks.
Looks like a mix of cryptid and sonar. Cryptid is my favorite deduction game. Might give this game a try
Compus?
I went to Cambridge Dictionary website and played the audio of the proper pronunciation to see if maybe Tom knew something we didn't.... and he is indeed pronouncing it weird.
Let's go with "different" instead of "weird."
;}
I'm gonna go with weird. I have never heard it said like he does.
why the fuck would he not say compass right? it's not like he is front of a huge crowd and nervous.
You should hear him say "donkey", "dominion", or "architect".
I haven't tried this one yet but it's definitely original.
What is also good, many houserules can be implemented into the game. Sky is the limit.
I BE WANTING THIS GAME!!!!! ARRRRRGH!
I'm looking for a deeper version of Tobago. I thought this might be it. After the review I see it's not. Can someone please make Advanced Tobago? Something where you can lead people to the wrong treasure. Or where being cleaver is needed to decipher the meaning of the clues.
This looked interesting, but I think Cryptid look like it does this better. Still keen to try it though.
I was just thinking this would have been such a better theme for Cryptid, but yea, the mechanics of Cryptid seem far superior.
Cryptid is mechanically more interesting maybe, but I think the theme is way stronger in this. I also like the presentation in this way more.

I be 'aving to do some lootin' so I can acquire this here treasured game. Yarrrrrr!!!
Seems unique, but probably not for me. Looks to be on the fiddly side and I'm not sure I like the fact that it seems extremely hard to win as Long John Silver. Still though, cool artwork and an interesting idea

surely someone must have made AND named a boardgame treasure island at this point, this cannot be the first
Just because it's been done before doesn't mean anyone's stopping them from doing it. I was interested until I saw the price. I thought this would be a $25-30 game.
Have you SEEN all the components that are in that box ?? I was surprised it wasn’t a 70-80$ game.
It's kind of weird Tom is reviewing this. I thought Sam was the one really interested in this.
Seems messy. Makes me want to play "Tobago" instead.
Unfortunately I just can’t put another game in my collection.
looks like a well designed, unique, well themed product :-) ...too bad its not a 1 player game 0_o

I was excited until I saw the ruler come out. The chances that this game is fun just dropped by about 75%
chuckm1961 that’s when I fell in love with the game! 😂😂😂
Yep, I threw out that mechanism a long time ago, hate it. Pass.
Game does look ok otherwise though.
And thats when it went up by 100% for me, is the same point.
That’s exactly what happened to me…next
Despite gorgeous art, this will be a pass for me at this point...
Looks interesting
thanks for the review.but it seems its too fiddly.matagot will have betters things this year anyway.western legends and kemet:seth looks better for me.
When you see in a TH-cam video the next game you want to buy...
A compass is a directonal tool, a pair of compass is a drawing tool.....simple.
Really wish the gameplay would have been a bit simplistic...Worker placement + deck building type game...
Love the theme...Love treasure island BUT didn't like the game mechanics one bit!

Nope! I'm outta here...
Ummmm...pass
Are you sure this "game" is not an April Fool's joke?
