Both 'sit on a chair' and 'sit in a chair' are correct. It depends on the type of chair.
If the chair is hard (like dining chairs, lawn chairs, park chairs, etc.), we can say 'sit on the chair'.
'Sit in a chair' refers to 'comfortable' chairs like arm chairs, outdoor lounge chairs, recliners, etc.
