im 14 years old just got my bug and wow yours is in so much better condition than mine aha thankyou for showing me the vin numbers about to get started restoring it before im 17 hopefully
I have a 68 bug and seems some of the parts i order depend if its a 68 1/2 bug...i am hoping one of the tags tell me the month of manufacture...i just recently purchased this bug so allot of this is new to me...thank you for these videos sir
My original 73 and motor was stolen out of my driveway, got depressed, recently got a 67 on a 65 frame stripped thinking what I want to do. Enjoyed your video. I've got a film background admit not using much these days.
Never even thought of this before. Sometimes what you don’t know won’t hurt ya. However, this video made me get up this morning and check all three. Under the trunk, windshield dash, and under backseat. They all match. It wouldn’t have mattered in the long rung cuz I love my ‘69 so much. The lady I bought from bought it brand new in San Diego. She took very good care of it. I’ll do the same.
Chris, my wife’s dad passed away and left her an early 50’s bug. The only number we can make out is the stamped six digit number the plate in the front. Any suggestions?
Hi Chris, I know this is an older video but if you happen to see this I wonder if you can help? I recently bought my first bug. I live in Spain, bugs are really cheap here. The only paperwork the guy could provide was the title from when the car was imported to Spain from the USA. It says it´s a 64, but it really isn't, and the chassis number under the seat is from a 58. Which means at some point they changed the body, but the plate under the tire isn't there. Is there a way I can find the year another way? It would be helpful for ordering different parts and such. Based on what I can find online with the keys, fuse box, seats etc... it's at least a '71.
Hey Terry, tough to say. You say it is at least a 71? On a 58 Chassis? Hmmm, that sounds strange. Many times there are body numbers by where the VIN tag would be, that can sometimes help with the year.
@@classicvwbugs Thanks! I´ll take a look. The only reason I was guessing 58 was because of the number I looked up on The Samba, but that does sound like an awfully strange match. All of the different aspects it has maake me think it's a least a 71, like the seats, steering wheel, stuff like that. But I´m really new at this and a little lost. Thanks for replying! Been following the channel for about a year now and have gotten so much helpful info from it!
Love all your videos and the fine work you produce. Wondering if you have an answer for my little mystery. I purchased a '56, knowing that the numbers weren't matching....which is fine as I plan on just restoring it for myself. Anyway, I was running the numbers and the chassis dates to '63, the engine in it is also from'63, the "spare" engine dates to '58 and here's the mystery...the body stamp (under the placard) dates the body as a '52, which can't be right? Wouldn't a '52 be a split...mine's an oval. Any thoughts? Side note...loved the fall ride and seeing the people get their resto from you. Are you retiring? Thanks!!
also, the palcard dates the body to '52...but the number is not the same as the placard. Was thinking that different manufacturing times could produce different numbers, but would they have made bodies in '52 that weren't used until '56?
@@classicvwbugs that's awesome, thanks, but....a little more placard cleaning and I found the #1 started the sequence (couldn't read it with all the rust, lol). Also, found that body numbers stamped were re-used in subsequent years (the six digit 356383 was used in '52 and again in'56, the difference obviously being the split to oval change). Anyway, long story short, both the body stamp below the placard and the placard match up to 1956. But thank you for getting back to me...that was very cool!
@@classicvwbugs On a 1970 beetle are the vin numbers located in the same position as on the one in your video? Or are they in a different place? Thank you. Great video very informative and interesting

hey chris i need your help bud the vin number i saw beside the windshield the number don't come up and we the people don't have the right tittle for it and it's a 72 model what should i do
Hi Chris! Great news, mi vin numbers match. According to thesamba my bug was made on december 1961. Do u know if this is consider as a 62? Cause thats the model of my bug... Keep uploading vids!! Great job!!!!
lillovebuglily you have to interpolate...you will see that month of production, say January is 113 2524 536 and Feb is 1132606864.... and your bug is 1132565700
Those were on the later models, I believe that started that in the late 60s. I have a 70 beetle and it has the sticker there. Early models are only on the chassis and tag in trunk.

I have an oval with body# 1595023, chassis# 576491 and engine# 2568576. I am confused with the engine#, does it match with the others?
No never did.
As far as I understood chassis&body match on model 1957, but engine# equals late 1958?
Hi, informative video thanks.....whats the diference between a chassis number and a serial number?
Where is the vin number located for a 1970 VW beetle? Anyone know?
Thank you
if i buy a pan for a bug do i need a title with it THANKS
The pan? or the whole chassis?
1-0870126 is not posted on samba any idea when my engine was built?
the exact number won't be, they show you a range on there. it would be pages upon pages if they listed each vin.
I have a 71 but it was made in nov of 71. Should I buy 71 parts like seals, wire loom, and other stuff or go with 72?
My Vin# starts with a 278, is this a german number?
How can we know the original colour of the bug? Thanx
